Water is important to us. However, around one in three people worldwide don’t have safe drinking water near their homes. Every day, 800 children under the age of five die as a result of water problems.
Deepika Kurup, now 23, had a happy childhood in the United States. But her Indian-born parents took her to visit their home country every year. It didn’t take long for the girl to realize how different it was from the United States. When she was 14 years old, she noticed one day that some children around her age there were collecting water that was obviously (显然) dirty.
“They really shocked me,” Kurup says. “That was the only water that they could get to drink and to cook their food with!”
Kurup’s father is an engineering professor (教授) . Unsurprisingly, the girl became interested in science at a young age. She even has a small lab in her father’s garage. After realizing that millions of people around the world have to live without clean water, Kurup wanted to try to solve the problem.
Kurup ended up creating an affordable (负担得起的) and effective water purification system. With the help of sunlight, the system can greatly reduce the number of bacteria (细菌) present in water. The invention has won many awards.
But over the years, Kurup gradually realized that her system alone wasn’t enough to solve the world’s water problems. These problems are just too complex. There should be many other ways. Some might work better than hers in some situations. The girl hopes others will come up with great ideas.
Meanwhile, Kurup has been upgrading (升级) her water purification system. Different communities have different needs, and she would like to see more people really benefit from her invention.

Some people believe that schools will no longer be necessary in the near future. They say that because of the Internet and other new technology, there is no longer any need for school buildings, classes or teachers.
Perhaps this will be true one day, but if the world has no schools, I can’t imagine how our society will be. In fact, we should learn how to use new technology to make schools better. We should invent a new kind of school that is linked (链接) to libraries, museums, science centers, labs and even companies. Technological companies should create learning programs for schools. Scientists could give talks through the Internet. TV networks and local (本地的) stations could develop programs about things students are studying in school. Labs could set up websites to show new technology so students could see it on the Internet.
Is this a dream? No. There are already many cities where this is beginning to happen.
Here the whole city is linked to the Internet, and learning can take place at home, at school and in the office. Businesses provide programs for the schools and the society. The schools provide computer labs for people without their own computers at home. Because everyone can go on the internet, older people use it as much as younger ones, and everyone can visit faraway libraries and museums as easily as nearby ones.
How will this new kind of school change the usual way of learning? It is too early to be sure, but it is very exciting to think about it. Technology will change the way we learn; school will change as well; and we will all learn something from the internet.

C.students can give talks at local stations D.we can study at home or at school

A.buy B.make C.sell D.visit
