My turning point took place on January 20,2021.It was the day before my husband and I celebrated our ninth anniversary (周年纪念日) that I decided to better myself.I was 32 years old and over 260 pounds.I thought to myself,“My kids are so little, and the route I am on isn't going to allow me to be here long enough to watch them grow in life.”It just destroyed my happiness. I began running at STRIDE in January 2022.My first class there was just power walking. After the class was done,I thought to myself,“Man,I think I could push myself a little harder next time.”And I did. With love and encouragement from all the members surrounding me and the guidance and support from the coaches,I have been running ever since and loving it.I have never been a runner. Now I feel like my day doesn't start without running, and that makes me so proud to say.I have come so far since joining STRIDE,but not just physically.Running has helped my mind and soul in more ways than one,and I'm so grateful for that.Running has given me a purpose again— a purpose to be a better mom,a purpose to be a better wife,a purpose to do better with my career, and a purpose to just better myself, which I so enjoy again. Earlier this year, the World Journal of Biological Psychiatry published a paper that warned of the potential effects of LED lighting on mental illnesses. It raised concerns about the influence of blue light on sleep, use of digital healthcare apps and devices, and the higher sensitivity to blue light. “I had already clearly seen that additional blue light exposure was extremely helpful to patients with depression. What I was slower to realize was that too much and poorlytimed exposure could have harmful effects on mental states and the sleepwake cycle.” said John Gottlieb, Professor of Psychiatry and author of the paper. As we all know, melatonin (褪黑素) is fundamental in setting regular biological clock. According to the paper, however, blue light prevents melatonin secretion (分泌), which disturbs sleep and affects quality of life, physical and mental health.Besides, it also shows a clear and consistent relationship between sleep disorders and frequency of digital device usage. If a person is prescribed a selfmonitoring app, and instructed to use their smartphone to document mood changes, for example, and they do this before bed, it could do harm to their sleep and health. Consequently, the National Sleep Foundation guidelines suggest not using technology 30 minutes before bed and removing technology from the bedroom. However, there are no specific guidelines for people with a potential mental illness. Now, scientists, health professionals and the LED industry are working to minimize the blue light in LED bulbs and create personalized lights that won't harm those suffering from mental disorders. The theory behind the study originates from the fact that a major part of facial aging is due to the loss of fat and soft tissue, which leads to the growth and spread of wrinkles. If we can lift weights at the gym and enlarge muscles in arms, why couldn't the same be done for muscles in our faces, therefore to create a more youthful face? The concept of facial exercise is not a new one.A simple Internet search will produce a lot of blog posts and books on the subject, as well as various programs that promise to be the next fountain of youth. What the JAMA Dermatology researchers did in their study, which was the first of its kind, was to examine this question from a more strict scientific aspect. They enrolled 27 women between the ages of 40 and 65 to perform daily, 30minute exercises for eight weeks, and then continue every other day for a total of 20 weeks. Dermatologists who did not know the participants were asked to rate their photographs before and after the exercise. The dermatologists found an improvement in cheek fullness and estimated the age of the participants at 51 years of age at the start of the program and 48 at the end of the 20week study.Furthermore, all the participants felt improvement in their own facial appearance at the end of the study. While these results seem exalting, the study has some obvious limitations.Of the 27 patients involved, 11 gave up before completing the study. One reason may be that the program was too timeconsuming, clocking in at 30 minutes a day.The overall small size of the study also limits its generalizability to the larger population. In addition, there was also no control group, which would have helped reduce the possibility that this improvement happened by chance. It's also hard to draw conclusions about the longevity of these results.Probably the exercises must be continued to keep their effects. But for how long? And how frequently? Which exercises are most effective? Most studies are needed to answer these questions. 12.What is the author's attitude towards the study published in JAMA Dermatology? A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Opposed. D.Indifferent. 根据第一段和最后一段中“Probably the exercises must be continued to keep their effects.” B。 13.According to the passage, which statement is true? A.Though the concept of facial exercise is new, much information about it can be found on the Internet. B.Some participants did not feel improvement in their facial appearance at the end of the study. C.If there is a control group, the possibility that the improvement in the facial appearance happened by chance will be increased. D.The reason why some participants quit the study before it was completely may be that they had not enough time. 根据第五段中“Of the 27 patients involved, 11 gave up before completing the study. One reason may be that the program was too timeconsuming, clocking in at 30 minutes a day.” D。 14.What does the underlined word “exalting” mean in paragraph 5? A.Exciting. B.Challenging. C.Frustrating. D.Calming. 根据第五段中“While these results seem exalting, the study has some obvious limitations.”和第四段中“Furthermore, all the participants felt improvement in their own facial appearance at the end of the study.” A。 15.What can be inferred from the passage? A.The study published in JAMA Dermatology is not reliable. B.Healthy living is the only way to make someone look and feel young. C.More studies are needed to further the present study on facial exercises. D.As a dermatologist, the author was involved in the research project on facial exercises. 根据最后一段中“Probably the exercises must be continued to keep their effects. But for how long? And how frequently? Which exercises are most effective? Yours, Li Hua 第二节(满分25分) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 When David was a boy, he was embarrassed to be seen walking with his father. His father was short and severely crippled (跛腿的).When the father and the son walked along the street together, the father's hand was on David's arm for balance, which attracted a lot of unwanted attention. At that moment, David always felt ashamed and wanted to run away. But the father said: “We just walk differently.” Almost every weekday David had to accompany his father to go to work.Their usual walk was to or from the subway, which was how his father got to work.It was hard for the father to walk, but he stuck to work, even if he was sick or the weather was bad.He never missed a day. When snow or ice was on the ground, it was impossible for him to walk, even with others' help.At such times David would pull him through the streets on a child's sleigh (雪橇) to the subway entrance.Once there, the father would cling to (抓住) the handrail until he reached the lower steps where the warmer tunnel air kept icefree.Fortunately, the subway station was the basement of his office building. After arriving at his office, he would not have to go outside again until David met him to go home. However, he had never complained, instead, he always said: “There is always a way to arrive.” One Friday, when they walked back home as usual, David looked upset. His father asked the boy whether he met something terrible.David lowered his head and said nothing.“My dear, maybe I can give you a hand.” said the father.“No.You cannot.” the boy sobbed. Then the two men went on walking silently. After getting home, the father received a call from David's teacher. He was informed there would be a parentchild football game next Friday on the school playground, and he was expected to take part. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。 After saying thanks to the teacher, the father went to the sobbing David._______________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ David watched as his father was standing on the playground with other parents._________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ [文本解读] 本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了大卫的父亲腿部有严重的残疾,学校要求家长参加亲子足球比赛,大卫因为父亲不能上场比赛的事情很沮丧,但是父亲以场外服务的形式参加了比赛,父子和解的故事。 [参考范文] After saying thanks to the teacher, the father went to the sobbing David.Knowing why the boy was unhappy, the father tried to hug him. However, the boy pushed him wildly.“David, I have told you ‘we just walk differently’”, said the father.Tom refused to answer and went on sobbing. David watched as his father was standing on the playground with other parents. His father seemed to be discussing something with other adults. After the game began, the parents and the children competed on the playground wildly and happily.Meanwhile, David's father and his partners were busy peeling the fruit and making juice. The game was over, most of the players flooding to enjoy juice.Looking at people's smiling faces, David understood his father's words.Noticing David, the father smiled to him, and the boy decided to join him. 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
