World Heritage Sites such as Great Barrier Reef and Kathmandu could be taken off the tourist map by 2020 due to the effects of climate change and too many visitors,a thinktank said on Friday.
In a report prepared for the UK insurance company Churchill, the Centre for Future Studies(CFS) listed 10 popular destinations that could be either permanently closed or have a visitor cap within 15 years.
“I'm reasonably confident we're going to see an increasing climate degradation(恶化) that is going to influence various places in the world with increasing severity(严重),” said CFS Director Frank Shaw.“Floods, storms, droughts, increasing and irregular temperatures will combine to bring about changes in destination choice for tourists.”
Florida's Everglades in the United States,Athens in Greece,Croatia's Dalmatian coastline,Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast in Italy as well as the Maldives are some of the other destinations at risk highlighted by the report.
The study drew on evidence provided by scientists, governments,as well as tourism and environmental organisations from around the world.
Tourism activity on the Great Barrier Reef, situated off Queensland state in Australia's northeast, injects an estimated $3.8 billion into the local economy each year.
“There is a conflict between environmental concerns and commercial interests,” added Shaw.“For some countries tourism represents a significant part of their gross domestic product. But there is evidence that Australia and many other governments are considering what can be done to protect national assets.”

A.some heritage sites will no longer be able to be seen in the future

The Chinese government has sped up the protection of the cultural relics in Tibet, spending more than 300 million yuan in 2006 for the protection of some valuable sites,an official said in Beijing Thursday.
The money was used to repair some famous Tibetan relic sites such as the Potala Palace,Norbu Lingka and Sakya Monastery, said Shan Jixiang, director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.
It is reported that there are around 2,000 cultural relic sites in Tibet, among which 35 are under statelevel protection, and 216 of them under various levels of government protection.
“Although the money given to the protection has been increased, cultural relics protection in Tibet meets great challenges posed by growing numbers of tourists to Tibet,” Shan said.
“It is necessary to protect the important cultural heritage in Tibet, considering the tourists flood in Tibet through the Qinghai Tibetan railway,” Shan said.
He suggested that the central government continue to increase investment for cultural relics protection and infrastructure(基础设施) construction in Tibet.Particularly a special institution with a special funding is needed for the protection of the top ten items of Tibetan cultural heritage.
“An office should be set up to work out practical protection plans for the top ten Tibetan cultural heritage items,” said Shan.
Among them, the Zhaibung Monastery and Panchen Lama's residence in Xigaze represent the development of Tibet.Jokhang temple,Tibetan Buddhism's site, shows that Tibet is an inseparable part of China.Naining Temple saw the historical moment when all nationalities of Tibet fought against foreign invasion(入侵),and Lhagyari Palace showed the development of Tibetan local political power.
