A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑).
Students are increasingly using laptops for notetaking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.
Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes “mindlessly” by taking down word for word what the professors said.
In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual notetaking skills.Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.
The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.
The researchers' report said,“While more notes are beneficial,if the notes are taken mindlessly,as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears.”
In another experiment aimed at testing longterm memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.
These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.
[语篇解读] 本文是说明文。文章介绍通过实验发现,手写记笔记比用笔记本电脑记笔记更有好处,有利于学生记忆和复习。
1.More and more students favour laptops for notetaking because they can .
A.write more notes
B.digest concepts better
C.get higher scores
D.understand lectures better
解析 A 细节理解题。根据文章第二段第一句“Students are increasingly using laptops for notetaking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).”可知,越来越多的学生喜欢用笔记本记笔记,因为这样他们可以记更多的笔记。故选A。
2.While taking notes, laptop users tend to be .
A.skillful B.mindless
C.thoughtful D.tireless
解析 B 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes ‘mindlessly’ by taking down word for word what the professors said”可知,使用笔记本电脑记笔记的学生在记笔记的过程中往往是无意识的、不动脑的。故选B。
3.The author of the passage aims to .
A.examine the importance of longterm memory
B.stress the benefit of taking notes by hand
C.explain the process of taking notes
D.promote the use of laptops
解析 B 推理判断题。根据文章第一段“A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑)”和最后一段“These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.”可知,文章介绍通过实验发现手写记笔记比用笔记本记笔记好处更多,学生更容易记住记的材料,所以作者是想强调用手记笔记的重要性。故选B。
4.The passage is likely to appear in .
A.a newspaper advertisement
B.a computer textbook
C.a science magazine
D.a finance report
解析 C 推理判断题。根据文章第三段中的“Researchers performed experiments that...”及倒数第二段中的“In another experiment aimed at testing longterm memory”可知,研究结果是通过科学实验得出的,所以短文应该出现在科学杂志上,而不是报纸广告,电脑课文,和财经报道。故选C。

Recently I read Nineteen EightyFour, a novel by George Orwell set in a totalitarian (极权主义的) state where even the language they use is controlled.Adjectives are forbidden and instead they use the words such as “ungood”, “plus good” and “double plus good” to express emotions.
As I first read this I thought how impossible it would be in our society to have such vocabulary. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized in its own way it was already happening.I type messages to my friends and alongside each is an emoji (表情符号).I often use them to emphasize something, or to seem not too serious, or because this specific GIF conveys my emotions much better than I ever could using just words. And I wonder, “With too much use of emojis, are we losing the beauty and diversity of our vocabulary?”
English has the largest vocabulary in the world, with over one million words, but who's to say what it'll be like in the future? Perhaps we will have a shorter language, full of saying “cry face” if something sad happens or using LOL (laugh out loud) or BRB (be right back) instead of saying the full phrase. So does this mean our vocabulary will shrink? Is it the start of an exciting new era?
Yet when you look back over time, the power of the image has always been there.Even in the prehistoric era they used imagery to communicate, and what's even more incredible is that we are able to analyse those drawings and understand the meaning of them thousands of years later.Pictures have the ability to go beyond time and language.Images, whether they are cave paintings or emojis, allow us to convey a message that's not restrictive but rather universal.
[语篇解读] 本文是一篇说明文。文章通过作者读《一九八四》这本小说以及用表情符号与朋友交流,阐述了符号在交流中的作用。
5.What is the reason for the novel Nineteen EightyFour being mentioned?
A.To introduce the following topic.
B.To recommend this book to readers.
C.To show the author's special interest.
D.To show the diversity of languages.
解析 A 推理判断题。第一段提到作者读了乔治·奥威尔的小说《一九八四》,故事发生在一个连语言都受到控制的极权主义国家。他们禁止使用形容词,而是使用“ungood”“plus good”和“double plus good”等来表达情感。结合接下来作者讲到的符号在日常生活中的使用推断出《一九八四》被提及是为了引出下文关于符号或图像语言在我们生活中的应用这个话题。故选A。B项“为了向读者推荐这本书”、C项“为了显示作者的特殊兴趣”和D项“为了展示语言的多样性”都不是提及此书的目的。
6.Why does the author often use emojis while typing messages?
A.Because they are easy to type.
B.Because they are amusing to use.
C.Because they can better convey emotions.
D.Because they reflect the diversity of languages.
解析 C 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“I often use them to emphasize something, or to seem not too serious, or because this specific GIF conveys my emotions much better than I ever could using just words.”可知,我经常用它们来强调某件事,或者让自己看起来不那么严肃,或者因为这个特定的动图比我只用文字能更好地表达我的情绪。故选C。A项“因为它们很容易输入”、B项“因为它们使用起来很有趣”和D项“因为它们反映了语言的多样性”均不是作者使用表情符号的原因。
7.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.English vocabulary will become smaller.
B.A new language era has come into being.
C.English will be more popular in the future.
D.Short forms of words may be popular in the future.
解析 D 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Perhaps we will have a shorter language, full of saying ‘cry face’ if something sad happens or using LOL (laugh out loud) or BRB (be right back) instead of saying the full phrase.”可知,也许我们会有一种更简略的语言,当悲伤的事情发生时用“cry face”来表达,或者用LOL(笑出声来)或BRB(马上回来)来代替完整的短语。由此推断出,将来缩略语也许会很受欢迎。故选D。根据“So does this mean our vocabulary will shrink?”可知A项“英语词汇量会变得更小”是不确定的;根据“Is it the start of an exciting new era?”可知B项“一个新的语言时代已经出现”也是不确定的;C项“在将来英语将是更受欢迎的”不是原文的信息。
8.What might be the author's opinion?
A.We shouldn't use emojis too much.
B.Emojis can be understood universally.
C.Languages will be replaced by emojis.
D.We have to learn several languages.
解析 B 推理判断题。根据文章最后一句“Images, whether they are cave paintings or emojis, allow us to convey a message that's not restrictive but rather universal.”可知,无论是洞穴壁画还是表情符号,图像允许我们传达一种不受限制而是广泛适用的信息。所以推断出,作者也许认为表情符号可以被普遍理解。故选B。A项“我们不应该过多使用表情符号”、C项“语言将被表情符号取代”和D项“我们必须学习几种语言”都不是文中作者的观点。
