I'm rather good at using maps. But I forgot the maps and here we were, late afternoon, last day of vacation,my daughter,my cousin and I,driving along a twolane highway in Oregon. No other car was in sight, and the sun had just gone down.Where was that sweet little village?
It was supposed to be right along this river. We drove on,the unknown river always on the left as our guide. We kept passing farms and fields and then a few lights were coming out.In my head,I was doing a lot of selfcriticism: Why didn't we start earlier, bring the map and so on? My cousin and I were both impatient and stressed. My daughter,at least, was happy in the back seat, texting a friend.I pulled up on the shoulder of the road to think.
Just then—Wow! Amazing! A new scene appeared.Where did it come from?
Right there, out of nowhere: a magical misty landscape.Fields stretched in silent purple, with rows of tall trees, darkening in the dusk.I turned the car engine off.All was silent in the hot summer air.Beside us,a plumcolored river hardly moved between lines of trees, its dark lazy water reflecting the last light of day.
How breathtaking! Where had it been? If I had seen even a bit of this beauty while driving along,I could have stopped and taken a look.I had missed it all.
We miss a lot, almost everything,in fact,in our world. Our taskfocused filters (过滤器) take care of that, selecting only what we need.We need to get to work.Have some lunch. We see what we need to see, often for the purpose of survival.Gregory Bateson, speaking of beauty, said the judgment is selection of a fact.In our daily lives, who or what is doing the selecting? Can we make a change? Can we see further?

(2024·沈阳期中) Green skin is common in science fiction, but what if green skin were not just for aliens? If humans had green skin, what if it granted us the ability to perform photosynthesis(光合作用),which plants use to live off sunlight?
Let's analyze what science says about it and ask awardwinning sciencefiction author John Scalzi what he thinks.
Plants can live off photosynthesis because they grow broad, flat leaves to absorb as much light as possible. They also need less energy because they are far less active than animals.
According to Lindsay Turnbull,a plant ecologist at the University of Oxford,if the skin of a woman were photosynthetic like a leaf, the amount of surface area she had would satisfy only 1% of her daily energy requirements to survive. For a photosynthesizing woman to meet her energy demands, she would need a lot more skin—about the size of a tennis court,Turnbull estimated.
In addition, photosynthesis requires carbon dioxide.Plants have pores(气孔) that they use to supply the gas to their cells. If photosynthetic humans had chloroplasts(叶绿体),they might need porous skin to let in carbon dioxide, but such pores might let other things leak in or out—for instance, moisture(水分)—in ways that might prove harmful to the human body.
One might wonder if photosynthetic people might prefer moving to sunny climates.Although such people might receive a small increase from photosynthesis if they moved to a desert area, they would likely have other resource issues to deal with, such as a lack of water,Scalzi said.“ There's always going to be tradeoffs,” he noted.
And would photosynthetic humans prefer little or no clothing,to absorb all those rays? In some photosynthetic societies, clothing might become a symbol of the elite—a sign that they get enough energy from food and do not need photosynthesis. You can imagine them saying,“I'm rich,so I can cover up,” Scalzi said.
So,would Scalzi want photosynthetic skin for himself? “ Probably not,” he said.“ It wouldn't hurt, but I don't see the benefit from it being so great that I would completely change the way I'd look to benefit from it.”
8.Why can't humans live off photosynthesis according to Lindsay Turnbull?
A.Humans wear clothes.
B.Humans are less active.
C.Humans don't have green skin.
D.Humans' skin area is not large enough.
9.If photosynthetic humans had pores, what would be the disadvantage?
A.They would be too small for human beings.
B.They would release some useful substances.
C.They would absorb too much carbon dioxide.
D.They would keep gases from entering the human body.
10.Why did Scalzi say no to photosynthetic skin for himself?
A.He was too oldfashioned to accept that.
B.He wouldn't like to move to sunny climates.
C.He believed there were more risks than benefits.
D.He thought clothing was simply a symbol of the upper class.
11.Where is the text probably from?
A.A biography.
B.A book review.
C.A diary entry.
D.A scientific paper.

Most of what I really need to know about is how to live, and what to do,and how to be,I learned in kindergarten.Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandbox at nursery school.
These are the things I learned: Share everything.Play fair.Don't hit people.Put things back where you found them.Clean up your own mess.Don't take things that aren't yours.Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.Wash your hands before you eat.Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.Live a balanced life.Learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work some every day.
Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.Be aware of wonder.Remember the little seed in the plastic cup.The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why,but we are all like that.Goldfish and white mice and even the little seed in the plastic cup—they all die.So do we.
And then remember the book about Dick and Jane and the first word you learned, the biggest word of all: LOOK.Everything you need to know is in there somewhere:The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation, ecology and politics and sane living.
Think of what a better world it would be if we all—the whole world—had cookies and milk about 3 o'clock every afternoon and then lay down with our blankets for a nap.Or if we had a basic policy in our nation and other nations to always put things back where we found them and clean up our own messes. And it is still true,no matter how old you are, when you go out into the world,it is best to hold hands and stick together.

Regret is a very real reaction to a disappointing event in your life, such as a choice you made that can't be changed,or something you said that you can't take back. 16 Regret can increase our stress, negatively affect physical health and disturb the balance of our immune systems.
17 One is what researchers refer to as the action path and the other is the inaction path. That is,we can regret the things we did or we can regret the things we did not do.Research suggests that actionrelated regret, although painful, encourages people to learn from their mistakes and move on. 18 This kind of regret is more likely to lead to depression and anxiety.
As with other negative emotions,it doesn't work to avoid, deny or try to destroy regret. 19 Rather than stay stuck, people can manage these emotions in four steps: First, accept the fact that you are feeling them; determine why you are feeling them; allow yourself to learn from them; and finally, release them and move forward.
You can help release these feelings of regret by practicing selfcompassion (自我同情).This means reminding yourself that you are human, you are doing the best you can and you can learn from past decisions and grow. 20
Noticing, acknowledging and then forgiving your thoughts are a powerful step towards overcoming regret.
A.Dealing with regret is even more difficult.
B.Regret is not only unpleasant, but also unhealthy.
C.There are basically two ways to experience regret.
D.But regret related to the inaction path is harder to fix.
E.Seeing the situation in a different way may help reduce regret.

Baskin was a 20yearold sophomore at the University of South Carolina whose parents ran a small restaurant. As he was the only college student in his family, his family tried their best to support him.Baskin always worked as a waiter in the restaurant to lighten his parents' burden. He was so hardworking that many customers praised his excellent service. His parents also appreciated and trusted him a lot.
It was a busy night. In the restaurant after a few guests walked in and sat down, they ordered a bottle of wine worth almost $2,000.
Having to serve another table,Baskin then asked a workmate to fetch the wine. However, since the employee was new,she accidentally took the wrong bottle of wine.Instead of the wine that was ordered by the customers, she served another wine, which cost about $1,000.As the bottles and names were similar,no one noticed the mistake.
Baskin didn't realize the mistake until the customers wanted to order a second bottle after finishing the first one.He checked the order quickly and understood what was wrong. He cleverly suggested they order a different one, without letting them know what had happened, which could give him time to think about how to solve the problem.
Everything seemed normal, but Baskin was lost in thought.“What should I do to solve this problem?” he asked himself. If he didn't tell the customers the mistake,he could keep the extra $1,000 secretly. As he was also the cashier of the restaurant,no one would know what happened.$1,000 was the tuition fee for the whole school year and his parents needn't work hard to earn money for him,or he could use the money to buy his favorite laptop which his parents couldn't afford. This extra money was really a huge temptation to him.But in this way,he would lose his honesty and dignity.
While he was struggling with his options, his father came over.
When the customers came to pay the bill,Baskin decided to do the right thing.
One possible version:
While he was struggling with his options, his father came over.Seeing his worried expression, his father asked him what was happening.Baskin couldn't help telling him the truth. His father listened attentively and gave his advice. He told Baskin he should tell the truth and admit his mistake.Baskin thought the customers probably wouldn't notice the mistake as they were not paying too much attention. His father said that he should always be honest and that only in this way could he always be trusted.Baskin nodded seriously.
When the customers came to pay the bill,Baskin decided to do the right thing. He explained the situation to the customers and apologized sincerely for the error. The customers were surprised at this and said they hadn't noticed the mistake at all.Instead, they said that the wine they were served tasted very good and gave him a large tip.To Baskin's relief, his father also forgave him for his mistake, saying that no harm had been done and that the customers were satisfied with the service.Thinking back,Baskin was grateful to his father and also learned an important life lesson.
