A
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has taken its first image of a planet outside our solar system. The exoplanet(系外行星)in Webb's image, called HIP 65426b,is a large planet about 6 to 12 times the mass of the planet Jupiter.
“This is a historic moment, not only for Webb but also for astronomy generally,” said Sasha Hinkley, associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.Astronomers discovered HIP 65426b in 2017 using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile. It is a young exoplanet around 15 to 20 million years old compared to our 4.5billionyearold Earth.
According to NASA,taking direct images of exoplanets presents a challenge because stars are much brighter than their surrounding planets—HIP 65426b is more than 10,000 times fainter than its host star in the nearinfrared, and a few thousand times fainter in the midinfrared.
Webb has a NearInfrared Camera (NIRCam) and MidInfrared Instrument (MIRI),which are both equipped with coronagraphs(日冕仪).“It was really impressive how well the Webb coronagraphs worked to suppress the light of the host star,” Hinkley said.Since HIP 65426b is around 100 times further away from its host star than Earth is from the Sun,it's sufficiently distant from the star that Webb can easily separate it from the star in the image.
Although this is not the first direct image of an exoplanet taken from space,as the Hubble Space Telescope has taken direct exoplanet images previously, the image points the way to future observations that will disclose more information about exoplanets.“I think what's most exciting is that we've only just begun,” said Aarynn Carter,a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California.“There are many more images of exoplanets to come that will shape our overall understanding of their physics, chemistry, and formation. We may even discover previously unknown planets, too.”
1.What can be inferred about HIP 65426b?
A.It was first observed in Chile.
B.It is about the size of Jupiter.
C.It is a planet of the solar system.
D.It has a longer history than Earth.
根据第二段中的“Astronomers discovered HIP 65426b in 2017 using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile”可知,天文学家2017年在智利使用欧洲南方天文台的甚大望远镜发现了HIP 65426b,故选A。
答案 A
2.Why is it hard to take direct images of HIP 65426b?
A.It's very close to its host star.
B.Infrared cameras can't spot it.
C.It's surrounded by other planets.
D.The light of its host star is too strong.
3.What does the underlined word “suppress” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Strengthen. B.Block.
C.Identify. D.Adjust.
根据第三段中的“HIP 65426b is more than 10,000 times...in the midinfrared”可知,HIP 65426b因其宿主恒星太亮导致无法对它直接拍摄;由第四段中的“Webb has a...equipped with coronagraphs(日冕仪)”以及“Webb can easily separate it from the star in the image”可知,韦布空间望远镜的近红外相机和中红外仪器都配备了日冕仪,最终成功拍摄到了HIP 65426b的图像,由此可推知,应是日冕仪挡住了HIP 65426b的宿主恒星的光线,画线词的含义应为“挡住”,故选B。
答案 B
4.What does Aarynn Carter say about taking the image of HIP 65426b?
A.It provides details of the exoplanet.
B.It helps understand the solar system better.
C.It is useful in exploring other exoplanets.
D.It is the first time an image of exoplanets has been taken.
B
(2025·盐城高二检测)With enough money,it's possible to do something unbelievable in Dubai and now you can add another to the list — walking on the moon.Recently,Canadian architectural company Moon World Resorts announced plans to construct a $5 billion resort (度假村) that looks like the moon in Dubai.
The project, named Moon Dubai,is meant to help visitors experience space tourism, which allows guests to find out what it is like to walk on the moon. The resort will be very luxurious and contemporary, with a lot of components inside that one would already know—for example,a wellness area, residential properties, restaurants,a convention center, and a spa, each with a lunar twist. It will also include a training platform for space agencies and astronauts.
Space tourism currently comes with a big price tag,and it's a barrier to entry for most travelers. However, the moon resort experience will be significantly cheaper.A walk on the lunar surface of the moon resort is much more affordable at $500.
“Moon Dubai will significantly impact every aspect of the UAE's economy, including tourism, transportation, commercial and residential real estate, infrastructure, financial services, aviation and space, energy, agriculture, technology and of course education,” says Michael R.Henderson, cofounder of Moon World Resorts.“It will be the largest and most successful modernday tourism project in the MENA region, doubling annual tourism visitations to Dubai based on its global appeal, brand awareness and unique multiple integrated offerings.”
Whether the project will eventually take off is currently unknown. If the design can be successful,it will require a 12month predevelopment planning program and a 48month building process. But the company's plan is viable (可行的).Moreover,Henderson estimated that the moon resort could open in 2027.
