A
Under a nearly full moon in the darkness of the night sky over Kansas,a group of student star watchers sat in a circle taking turns on the telescope. They seemed very happy, very cheerful, and excited to experience new things.
It was a bonding experience that was out of this world, especially considering that only a day before they were as foreign to each other as the moon landscape itself.
This past summer more than 300 high school graduates signed up for the unique student exchange program.Unlike the wellknown foreign exchange model that affords students a chance to study abroad, this program gives students the opportunity to soak in a brandnew culture without ever leaving the country.
It's called the American Exchange Project,or AEP for short, cofounded by 29yearold Franely McCullough, grandson of the late Pulitzer Prizewinning historian David McCullough.“We fund kids to spend a week in the summer after senior year in an American town that is socioeconomically and culturally different from the one that they're growing up in.” McCullough said.
For the past three years McCullough's been giving high school graduates that same experience, and so far at least,it's having the impact he hoped it would.A week may not seem like a lot of time, but at the end of those seven days, you can see the kids have been bonded so much. One girl from South Dakota said,“I've never been a part of a community where I'm not the minority. So,this is very much an experience that I really appreciate so much.”
McCullough hopes to offer the program to a million students by decade's end,and all free of charge, thanks to big name donors, including the likes of Steven Spielberg.“I think this all ought to be as typical to the American high school experience as the graduating party,” McCullough said.“I think every kid in every town should have an experience like this.”

1.What do the words “out of this world” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Wonderful. B.Confusing.

根据第一段“Under a nearly full moon in the darkness of the night sky over Kansas,a group of student star watchers sat in a circle taking turns on the telescope. They seemed very happy, very cheerful, and excited to experience new things.”和画线词后文“especially considering that only a day before they were as foreign to each other as the moon landscape itself”可推断,这是一种不同寻常的亲密体验。所以画线部分 out of this world意思为“非常好的”,与wonderful意思一致。故选 A。
2.What can we learn about the AEP project?
A.It's a summer camp for senior students.
B.It's a free weeklong trip in a new town.
C.It's in honour of a late famous historian.

根据第四段中“‘We fund kids to spend a week in the summer after senior year in an American town that is socioeconomically and culturally different from the one that they're growing up in.’ McCullough said.”
3.Why does the author mention South Dakota in paragraph 5?
A.To show the impact of the project. B.To explain the origin of the project.
C.To predict the future of the project. D.To invite more kids to join the project.

A.Students exploring the universe by the telescope
B.A new American town being open to the students
C.The big names donating fund to the students' growth
D.Students building bridges across the American divide

Specialists(专家) say that it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture.“Culture shock” occurs when they are talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. The specialists say that there are three stages of culture shock. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people, and everything else.In the last stage, the newcomers begin to get used to their surroundings and,as a result, enjoy their life more.
There are some evident factors in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be diverse. The public service systems—the telephone services, the Post Office,or the transportation—may be difficult to work out.The simplest things seem to be the biggest problems. The language may be difficult.
Who feels culture shock? Everyone does in this or that way.But culture shock surprises most people.Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their own country.Coming to a new country, these people find they do not have the same positions as they had back home. They find themselves without any identity. They have to build a new selfimage.
Culture shock gives rise to a feeling of helplessness. This feeling may be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the strange environment, and create an escape inside their room for a sense of security(安全).This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for a short time, but it does nothing to make the person familiar with the culture.Getting to know the new environment and gaining experience are the longterm solutions to the problem of culture shock.

根据第一段首句“Specialists say that it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture.” 故选A。
6.According to the passage, which of the following factors doesn't give rise to culture shock?
A.The language. B.The weather conditions and customs.

A.People who are not successful at home.
B.People who are very successful at home.

A.To protect ourselves from the unfamiliar environment.
B.To develop a strange sense of selfprotection.

My interest in the language之间为主谓关系,所以用现在分词形式。故填combining。
