Or, have you ever forgotten to switch off the TV or computer? These kinds of things happen to us all the time, waste resources, and can sometimes lead to problems. However, in the not-too-distant future, we will be living in smart homes that will lock the door for us when we are away and remember to switch off the TV when we forget. These smart homes will keep us secure, save us energy, and provide a more comfortable environment to live in. Intelligent Controls Today, we have to use switches for our lights, knobs (把手) for our appliances, and remote controls for our TVs and air conditioners. In the future, we will be using advanced technology every day for automatic control of just about everything in our home. The future home will use integrated sensors to tell when you leave home each morning, and then go into an energy-efficient mode all by itself. You will no longer have to think about turning switches on and off yourself. Your home will also learn your daily routine and preferences, so everything will be ready for you when you get home each evening. Your lights will come on the instant you enter the door along with your favourite music or TV programmes, and you will find your dinner already prepared for you. All controls will respond to voice commands, so if you want to change your routine, you just say aloud what you want and the home system will obey. Regular Health Checks In addition, your smart home will be monitoring your health for you every day. Your bed, for example, will record how well you sleep every night. It will also be checking your body weight. If you start to have sleep or weight problems, it will send a warning to your phone. It will also give you suggestions on a healthier diet and how to sleep better. Smart toilets will be keeping constant track of your health as well. They can warn you early on if there is something abnormal or if you have a critical illness, such as cancer, and potentially save your life. No More Disasters Smart homes will be able to prevent serious damage from accidents. For example, if a water pipe starts leaking, or if there is a short in the electrical wiring, your smart home will detect it and provide you with the relevant information. This way, you will be able to fix the problem before your home becomes flooded or catches fire. This smart technology is not a fantasy. Many of these new innovations are already available and being used in some homes. In this sense, the home of tomorrow is already the home of today. Nevertheless, it will take some years before most new homes begin to use this new technology. 36. Which of the following is TRUE about future smart homes? A. I discovered a unique talent: perfect timing. This discovery of my perfect timing was so astonishing that I kept it to myself, thinking no one would believe my ability to time my arrival at school with extraordinary precision. My mother passed away when I was 13, leaving me, the oldest of four, in the care of our grandparents. Our father was absent, so financial challenges were part of our daily life. This prompted my grandfather to work as the janitor (门卫) of our school — a large building for grades 1-12. To help out, I started assisting him after school to ease his burden, such as sweeping rooms and emptying wastebaskets, earning a small wage in the process. I continued this work until my final year of high school. By that time, Grandpa was eight years past retirement age. When the first cold snap of that year arrived, he fired up the school’s furnace (火炉). He quickly realized how difficult it had become for him to shovel the huge pile of coal chips required to fill the hopper (漏斗) of the furnace stoker (司炉). I volunteered to take on that job, a commitment that required me to set my alarm clock an hour earlier each morning. I’d fumble into coal-darkened jeans, go over to the school, and shovel a half ton of coal into the hopper, enough to keep the fire blazing for 24 hours. The next morning, I’d fill it again. After finishing that chore, I’d go home, clean up, change clothes, and eat breakfast. I’d pace my preparations by glancing at the clock in the dining room-it would be years before I’d have a watch. Then I’d head back to school, always at the last minute. It was during those morning rushes to school that I discovered my superpower. What initially seemed like mere coincidence—arriving at the exact moment the first bell rang — quickly became a deliberate challenge. I meticulously (小心翼翼地) planned each morning to maintain this precise timing, revealing the mastery of my routine. Years later, at a school reunion, I recounted this story to Harold Spiry, the school headmaster during my time. I boasted about my perfect timing, recalling with pride how I had mastered my mornings to the second. “Oh that,” he said, his eyes narrowing as he thought back to that time. “Do you recall that my desk and office windows looked out over the front of the building? I often saw you coming. And when you hit the sidewalk. I’d ring the bell.” Oh, my “perfect timing” was actually his doing. 41. What can we infer about the author’s character from his “perfect timing”? A. He lacks confidence. B. He values precision and discipline. C. He prefers to work alone. D. He is naturally lucky. 42. Why did the author’s grandfather work as a janitor? A. He needed the job to support the family financially. B. He found it was the only job available. C. He was passionate about cleaning. D. He wanted to stay close to his grandchildren at school. 43. What motivated the author to take over the task of shoveling coal for the furnace? A. He wanted to learn a new skill. B. He needed extra money for personal expenses. C. He was interested in the mechanical operation of the furnace. D. He wanted to relieve his grandfather’s workload. 44. What can we learn from Paragraph 4? A. The author’s development of a new skill in coal shoveling. B. The author’s daily routine of waking up early to attend school. C. The author’s devotion to aiding his grandfather with coal shoveling. D. The author’s realization of the importance of punctuality. 45. What message does the author’s story convey? A. Challenges can only be overcome through personal hardships. B. Our accomplishments are often supported by unseen kindness. C. Personal talents bring pride and joy to an individual’s life. D. Perseverance leads to the development of unique skills. 【答案】41. B 42. A 43. D 44. C 45. C Millions of older people, laborers and cancer sufferers could be unable to use their fingerprints to log in online bank accounts. Banks are spending millions of pounds on fingerprint technology to replace passwords. But banks may have to rethink these plans after warnings that the technology flawed (有缺陷). Representatives of major banks at a London conference were told many older people’s fingerprints are too faded for the machines to recognize. John Daugman, a professor of computer vision and pattern recognition at the University of Cambridge, says, “Fingerprints can ‘rub off’ for many kinds of laborers-their skin becomes almost smooth. Gardeners often acquire a lot of wounds on their fingers, and people who work with chemicals, such as cleaners, also suffer damage of fingerprints.” Jean Slocombe, a senior nurse at Cancer Research UK, says, “Some drugs can cause the skin of hands and feet to peel. In severe cases, the fingers can peel, and it’s possible that this could change a patient’s fingerprints. This should improve once treatment ceases, but severe scarring (伤疤) can change fingerprints in the long term.” Fingerprints are generally considered more secure than passwords for several reasons. Unlike passwords, fingerprints cannot be easily copied, written down, shared, or guessed. Additionally, it is impossible to forget one’s fingerprints. Currently, banks offer customers the option to use a password or PIN (personal identification number) for online access to their money. However, technology experts have predicted that companies might do away with passwords entirely to decrease the risk of fraud (诈骗). Should this transition to fingerprint technology occur, there is a potential risk that millions of bank customers could find themselves unable to access their accounts. Banks have tried other security measures, such as facial recognition but fingerprint technology is often the best one, as it is fast and people are more familiar with it. Nick Dryden, a chief executive of technology company Sthaler, says, “Business like fingerprint technology because it’s fast.” “There must always be a back-up so that if it doesn’t work, there is another way of paying, such as with a password.” Dryden adds that using the veins (静脉) in someone’s fingers to identify them is more secure and means people with faded prints will not be left behind as technology advances. 46. Which of the following is the critical flaw of using fingerprints to log into accounts? A. Fingerprints can be easily stolen from photos, B. Elderly people’s fingerprints may be too faint for detection. C. The application of fingerprint technology costs too much. D. Fingerprint recognition adapts to medical changes. 47. According to John Daugman, what causes unrecognizable fingerprints? A. Excessive use of technology. B. Lack of proper fingerprinting equipment. C. Environmental exposure process, D. Physical labor and natural aging. 48. What can we learn from Paragraph 4? A. Switching to fingerprints might lock out many customers. B. Fingerprints can totally avoid the risk of fraud. C. Experts recommend replacing passwords soon. D. Passwords and PINs are preferred by banks due to their simplicity. 49. Which is Dryden’s suggestion about fingerprint technology? A. Using veins instead of fingerprints isn’t workable. B. Its greatest advantage is its high speed of recognition. C. There must be other ways to get into bank accounts. D. Passwords are still the most reliable security measure now. 50. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Comparing password and fingerprint security. B. Enhancing and upgrading bank security measures. C. Advancing fingerprint and facial recognition technology. D. Presenting fingerprint technology challenges in banking. 【答案】46. B 47. D 48. A 49. C 50. Information is liberating. Education is the premise (前提) of progress.” These profound words by former UN Secretary — General Kofi Annan capture the transformative power of knowledge. When combined with effort, knowledge drives both personal growth and social advancement. Then, what does meaningful knowledge acquisition look like in today’s world? Formal education provides the foundation of knowledge. Schools equip us with the basic skills needed for personal and intellectual growth — reading, writing and critical thinking. More importantly, they teach us how to learn. For instance, many schools now include hands-on projects, such as recycling programs, where students apply science to address real-world issues. One such example is Sarah, a student who was inspired by her classroom learning, initiated a recycling program that successfully collected over 500 kg of plastic in just three months. This shows how education can bring about real change when knowledge is applied creatively. However, classroom learning alone isn’t enough. Real-world experience adds depth and perspective to textbook knowledge. I recall my first coastal cleanup with NOAA researchers — an eye-opening experience that allowed me to witness firsthand the disastrous effects of plastic pollution on marine life. Similarly, working with sustainable farmers taught me practical solutions that no textbook could fully capture. These experiences transformed abstract concepts into real-world understanding and deepened my commitment to environmental work. As the saying goes, “Experience is the best teacher” — it tests our knowledge and shows us how to use it effectively. Perhaps the most underestimated source of knowledge is the people around us. Every individual we meet carries unique experiences and insights. My grandmother, though not formally educated, taught me profound lessons about sustainability through her simple practices of reusing and repairing items. Human connections remind us that knowledge isn’t just found in books — it lives in stories, traditions, and everyday interactions. In an era of unprecedented (前所未有的) global challenges, the approaches to gaining knowledge aren’t just helpful — they’re essential. The students learning about plastic recycling today might become the environmental scientists of tomorrow. The lessons we gain from personal experiences shape how we tackle problems. The wisdom we share through human connections builds stronger, more innovative societies. 51. Why does the author quote Kofi Annan at the beginning? A. To present a historical case. B. To introduce the topic. C. To make a comparison. D. To criticize outdated views. 52. What does the author suggest about formal education? A. It’s foundational but fails to meet modern challenges. B. It’s the most trusted source of knowledge in today’s world. C. It focuses too much on memorization over creativity. D. It needs real-world application to make an impact. 53. According to the author, what does working with NOAA researchers indicate? A. How an experience deepens understanding. B. What the benefits of government support are. C. Why marine biology is crucial. D. Where the advantages of classroom learning lie. 54. Which of the following best illustrates the author’s view on knowledge sharing? A. A researcher documenting discoveries in private journals. B. A professor withdrawing research data for no reason. C. Students repeatedly reciting textbook content. D. Classmates debating environmental solutions. 55. The passage is mainly about ________. A. the various ways knowledge is acquired in today’s society B. the reason why experience outweighs classroom learning C. the key to solving unprecedented global challenges D. the significance of knowledge in shaping basic life skills 【答案】51. However, there is another side of New York City. The summer after tenth grade, I went with my group on a mission to New York City for a week. I had always known that poverty existed in major cities, but you had never seen it to a degree as high as we did there. We worked at several different locations with our small groups. One day, we served at a soup kitchen and what I saw astounded me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. We saw people from all walks of life. We met people who came there because they had no jobs, no home and no money. Another day, we volunteered at a homeless shelter. We helped people there do some cleaning and spent time talking to them and listening to their stories. It was incredible to see how thankful they were to us for just spending a couple of hours talking to them. Every person we met on that trip had a unique story. Whatever their stories were, there was a common thread we saw in them—hope and thanks. These were people who had nothing, yet they were so hopeful about their futures and they were thanking us. My experience during that summer changed my life. I used to picture my future as containing a big house and a lot of money, but now I see my future as helping others. After college, I would really like to work for some sort of global aid organization that deals with the social issues, such as poverty and homelessness. 56. What do most people have in mind when thinking of New York City? (No more than 10 words) 57. What does the underlined word “astounded” in the paragraph 2 mean? (One word) 58. A. Robots will lock the door for us when we are away. B. We will never forget to turn off the TV or computer again. C. Smart homes will change our attitude towards life. D. Smart homes will make our lives safer in them. 37. What can intelligent controls do in smart homes? A. If you want to change your routine, they can give you commands. B. They will play your favourite music or TV programmes all the time. C. They can predict when you leave home every morning. D. They can arrange for the facilities to serve you according to your living habits. 38. Smart homes will be monitoring your health by ________. A. checking your toilet B. tracking your sleep time C. sending warnings when you have health problems D. giving tips on your daily routine 39. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage? A. To introduce how smart homes will make our lives easier. B. To help us understand the advantages and disadvantages of smart homes. C. To remind us of the importance of smart homes in the future. D. To make suggestions on how to use the smart homes. 40. What section of a newspaper is the passage likely to be taken from? A. Entertainment. B. Politics. C. Business. D. Science. B In my senior year of high school, while living with grandparents. D Fingerprint recognition adapts to medical changes. D “Knowledge is power. D It needs real-world application to make an impact. A. the various ways knowledge is acquired in today’s society B. the reason why experience outweighs classroom learning C. the key to solving unprecedented global challenges D. the significance of knowledge in shaping basic life skills 第Ⅱ卷(共35分) 第四部分:写作 第一节:阅读表达(本题共5小题,每小题2分,共10分) 阅读表达 When people think of New York City, most of them probably picture the attractive lifestyles of the rich and famous or think of Broadway, Times Square and other tourist attractions. What did the author discover in the people at the homeless shelter? (No more than 15 words) 59. What kind of organizations does the author want to work for after college? (No more than 10 words) 60.
