Descended from generations of fishers of Mauritius, Sandy Monrose never imagined herself as a farmer. But when a merchant ship crashed into the coral reef (礁) in 2020, turning the sea inky black with toxic fuel and sinking the local economy, she and a group of local women turned to the land to feed their families. Five years later, her “model farm” is booming.
Memories of the biggest ecological disaster to hit the island are still raw. Monrose says, “As people of the sea, we knew what needed to be done.” After the oil spill, she showed people how to quickly assemble net booms (阻油栏) to contain and clean up the mess.
It was only months later, as the cruel reality of lost livelihoods sunk in, that the idea of starting a farm generated. By this point, Monrose had been meeting women from nearby communities. She made an appointment with a company, which runs an “agri-center” for farming entrepreneurs. “It was unimaginable. We asked for land and we got it on the same day,” she says.
The early days were painful: The new farm was destroyed by tropical rainstorms repeatedly. Eventually, the company gave them higher land. Once the site of a sugar cane (甘蔗) plantation, the over-fertilized soil was badly in need of some expertise. For this new phase of cooperation, the company organized a series of training for the women. “That’s when things got serious. The farm became very structured,” says Monrose.
Latouche, from the tiny village of Bambous Virieux, says farming gave her a new sense of autonomy. The income from farm has been vital after her husband lost the income as a fisher. Bringing home food has made her “feel stronger”. Robinson, who lives near Monrose in Cité la Chaux, says, “I’ve found something that keeps me going, and every day we’re getting food to take home.”
4. What was the life of Sandy like before the disaster?
A. Relying on the ocean heavily. B. Having a decent income from fishing.
C. Engaging in both fishing and light industry. D. Focusing on the protection of ecology.
5. What did Monrose do right away after the disaster?
A. Seek help from a company. B. Consider other livelihoods.
C. Volunteer to examine the coast. D. Prevent the pollution from spreading.
6. Why did the author mention Latouche’s words?
A. To explain the damage of the disaster. B. To show the meaning of farming.
C. To introduce Mauritius after the disaster. D. To prove the potential of farming.
7. What may be a suitable title for the text?
A. Oil Spill Ruins Coral Reef B. A Company Saves Local Economy
C. Fisherwomen Rebuild with a Farm D. Tropical Storms Destroy Mauritian Farms

A 26-mile stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina reopened Monday, marking a major milestone in the state’s recovery from Hurricane Helene, nearly a year after the historically devastating storm.
The National Park Service (NPS), which operates and maintains the 469-mile-long highway that is itself a national park, announced the reopening of a section from Asheville, North Carolina, to Mount Mitchell State Park. The NPS said this project was the completion of an initial round of recovery projects underway to repair the numerous landslides that happened during the Hurricane Helene.
An official requested an additional $13.5 billion in additional aid from Congress. He estimated that the total damage caused by the hurricane totaled nearly $60 billion and impacted close to a third of the state’s population. The Department of Homeland Security said Monday that the government had provided North Carolina an additional $64.2 million to support recovery on top of some $3 billion in federal funding.
The reopening of this part of the Blue Ridge Parkway comes just in time for the peak of the fall foliage (秋叶景观) season, a major tourist attraction. According to the Blue Ridge Parkway’s website, it’s considered by many as “America’s Favorite Drive”.
Monday’s reopening included popular locations in the Craggy Gardens area, including Craggy Gardens Visitor Center, Craggy Pinnacle Trail and short sections of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Several other attractions are still closed due to storm damage. The NPS said it is prioritizing the restoration of road access on the Blue Ridge Parkway through a phased approach, and new projects are now beginning in 45 remaining locations. The NPS said major damage remains in the Linville Falls area, from milepost 317, south to Mount Mitchell State Park.
According to the US Forest Service, Helene impacted 885 miles of road on Forest Service property and completely destroyed 30% of roadways. The NPS said visitors should still consult the Blue Ridge Parkway’s website when planning trips for the latest closures and conditions.

B. It is carried out in a step-by-step manner.
C. It only focuses on road access restoration.
D. It has received sufficient funding to cover all costs.
11. Where is this text most likely taken from?
A. A science textbook. B. A local news report.
C. A travel guide. D. An official document.

In a world that is coping with a growing population, there is a mounting need to develop and manage systems, products, and processes that boost productivity but with minimal environmental impact. To design a product or process well, you first need to deeply understand how a substance behaves. This is exactly where chemical engineers play a key role.
“Chemical Engineering is all about changing raw materials into useful products you use every day in a safe and cost-effective way, such as using fossil oil in making petrol, plastics and synthetic fibres and so on,” said Professor Tey Beng Ti from the School of Engineering at Monash University Malaysia.
A member of Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), Tey has published more than 90 papers in leading scientific journals. “Chemical engineers basically understand how to alter the chemical or biochemical state of a substance, to create everything from face creams to fuels,” he said. The belief spurred Tey to launch a research project eight years ago which has resulted in a discovery on how to simplify the production process of therapeutic (治疗的) protein such as virus-like particles.
He said the current flu vaccine is produced in fertilised chicken eggs, but it has limitations. Firstly, the virus yield is very low, and the egg supply could be affected by avian flu pandemics and so on. Apart from that, people allergic to eggs cannot receive such vaccines. In his research, Tey sought to purify virus-like particles via a chromatographic (色谱法的) purification process. This new method delivered up to 17 times higher product yield and cut processing time by 6-10 times, compared to conventional approaches. So far, they have filed 9 patents in Malaysia and published more than 50 articles in leading international scientific journals.
Tey said the work of a chemical engineer could be extremely diverse, but it would always be relevant. “Whether you focus on developing future energy solutions, controlling pollution or protecting our environment, your future as a chemical engineer is bright.”
12. Why are chemical engineers key to products?
A. They master the characteristics of substances.
B. They minimize environment impact.
C. They end fossil-fuel use.
D. They cut costs.
13. Which can replace the underlined word “spurred” in paragraph 3?
A. Trained. B. Inspired. C. Expected. D. Discouraged.
14. What can we know about Tey’s chromatographic purification process?
A. It has replaced the conventional method. B. It requires more raw materials.
C. It is more efficient and productive. D. It has been used in global markets.
15. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph?
A. The specific steps to become a chemical engineer.
B. Prof. Tey’s suggestions on environmental pollution.
C. The challenges chemical engineers face in the future.
D The promising career prospects of chemical engineers.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was on a delayed train from London, anxious about missing my last connecting train home. The carriage was full, and a friendly lady sat next to me. We first talked about the delay, and then about our own wonderful experiences.
“Sometimes, delays happen for a reason,” she said softly. Though I didn’t fully understand then, her thoughtful words stayed with me as the station grew near.
Soon it was clear that I would miss my connection by minutes. With home a four-hour drive away, I faced finding a hotel. Just as I stood up to leave, the lady said, “You could stay with me tonight.” Though I felt I could trust her, I knew I must call my mother first. “Mum, a kind lady on the train has offered me a room,” I said. Feeling worried, my mother asked to speak to her directly.
What happened next was wholly unexpected. As they spoke, the woman’s expression changed — from polite attention to gentle surprise. She handed the phone back, and my mum’s voice was different now. “You may stay. That is Mrs Lewis, who was my English teacher years ago,” Mum told me. What a surprise! The kind stranger beside me was someone who had once taught my mother.
That evening, Mrs Lewis led me into her study. From the top shelf, she took down a worn notebook. “Your mother was one of my most thoughtful students,” she said, opening it to a certain page. In my mother’s youthful handwriting, there was an essay titled “Kindness Is a Circle”. Beside it, in Mrs Lewis’s red pen, was a note: “True. And sometimes the circle takes years to complete.” I stared in surprise. It was as if these words had been waiting in silence for tonight to make perfect sense. Mrs Lewis explained, “Your mother wrote that kindness passes like a circle and may return to its starting point in unexpected ways. I think tonight that circle has closed.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next morning, Mrs Lewis took the notebook with her and drove me to the station.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Holding that notebook, I understood it was a bridge between the past and the present.

D. The promising career prospects of chemical engineers.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. D

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了如何通过采取具体行动成为一名真正的全球公民。
【16题详解】
根据上文“Global citizens recognize that they are a part of the global community and that their actions can impact the lives of people on the other side of the world. Global citizens are aware of their place in the world.(全球公民们深知自己是全球大家庭的一员,并且他们的行为能够对世界另一端的人们的生活产生影响。
根据后文“Do your part by learning more about climate change and doing what you can to reduce your carbon footprint, and live in harmony with the natural world around you. Simply getting together with some neighbors to pick up trash around your neighborhood is a great way to be more environmentally sustainable while also making friends and beautifying the community where you live.(尽自己的一份力,多了解气候变化的相关知识,并尽己所能减少碳足迹,与周围的自然环境和谐共处。仅仅是与一些邻居一起在你们的社区内清理垃圾,就是一种很好的方式,既能提升环境可持续性,又能结交朋友,还能美化你们所居住的社区)”可知,空格后紧跟“了解气候变化、减少碳足迹”,说明空格句要先引出“气候变化”这个核心话题,作为段落总起,衔接后文的具体行动。故E选项“气候变化是一个真正的全球性问题,需要全球性的解决方案”符合语境,故选E。

Benefiting from Sharing Ideas
Sharing ideas is a powerful way to deepen our understanding and broaden our horizons. When we exchange perspectives, we’re exposed to new ways of thinking and encouraged to reflect on our own views. In this way, sharing ideas becomes a bridge connecting people and promoting intellectual growth.
In my school life, sharing ideas has brought me many benefits. During a group project, I shared my insights on organizing information. A teammate introduced a creative approach to presentations that improved our work. A friend shared her way of dealing with exam stress, which helped me build healthier study habits. These experiences taught me that sharing ideas is a process that helps us become better learners and thinkers.

(1)续写词数应150个左右;

【答案】参考范文:
The next morning, Mrs Lewis took the notebook with her and drove me to the station. Before I boarded, she handed the notebook to me. “Please return this to your mother,” she said. “And tell her that her line — ‘We don’t just receive kindness; we become its next keeper’ — has guided me all these years.” I took it solemnly, feeling I held a trust passed across time. That night showed me how a single act of kindness can travel through years and reappear just when needed. Mrs Lewis wasn’t just helping me; she was completing a circle my mother had begun.
Holding that notebook, I understood it was a bridge between the past and the present. As the train pulled away, I placed it carefully in my bag. When I finally arrived home, I gave the notebook to my mother. She sat quietly, tracing her own youthful handwriting. After a moment, she looked up. “I wrote this at sixteen,” she said. “Mrs Lewis told me good words never truly fade.” She opened to the back, where her class photo was tucked. “I’ve kept my copy all these years,” she smiled. “Now you see we keep kindness alive by passing it on.”
