Harper Lee (1926—2016) was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird (published in 1960), which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. The 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck won three Academy Awards.
For decades the book was Lee’s only major work of published fiction, but it was hugely influential for generations of U.S. readers. It has sold more than 10 million copies, and is one of the most widely taught novels in the U.S. schools. In 2007 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to literature.
Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared. The world, however, continued waiting for a new novel from her, and on occasion she suggested that she was working on another story.
In 2015, a book did come out. Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as adult.
Though Lee moved to New York in 1949, she spent many years guarding her privacy (隐私) in Monroeville, which served as the clear inspiration for the setting in To Kill a Mockingbird.
In 2007, Lee suffered a stroke (中风), but recovered and later settled in Monroeville permanently to care for her sister, Alice, who died in 2014. She was said to eat breakfast every morning at the same fast-food spot, and was friendly with her neighbors. The countless Americans knew her only through her works, and they will undoubtedly miss her.
4. What can be learned about Harper Lee from the first two paragraphs?
A. She was regarded as the greatest writer in America.
B. She made great contributions to American literature.
C. She once starred in a film adapted from her own novel.
D. She is the most popular writer in American schools in history.
5. Why did Harper Lee disappear from public life after her first novel came out?
A. She tried to get out of criticism.
B. She wanted to write another novel.
C. She suffered a stroke and was in recovery.
D. She felt uneasy about her novel’s influence.
6. What can we learn about Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman?
A. It is based on her own life story. B. It is adapted into a famous film.
C. It won her lots of honors and awards. D. It continues the story of her earlier novel.
7. What can best describe Harper Lee?
A. Influential but simple. B. Ill-tempered but productive.
C. Caring but stubborn. D. Inspiring but struggling.
C
We all notice bright colors. People who choose to go eye-catching, whether they express themselves through clothes or accessories (配饰), hear everything from “No one is going to miss you at the party” to “I would never have the courage to wear that.” But according to research, those comments may be both accurate and expected.
Adam D. Pazda and Christopher A. Thorstenson (2019) examined how we perceive people at first impression who wear bright colors. They specifically examined the effect of chroma (色度). They found that targets, both male and female, who were wearing or surrounded by high-chroma colors were perceived as more open and outgoing than in a low-chroma setting. They concluded that chroma is a variable of perception that can influence first impressions of personality.
Drilling down further, they found that high-chroma colors strengthened viewer perspective of openness and extraversion (外向), but not other personalities. These observations are important because some job responsibilities capitalize on some of the personalities inferred through bright colors.
Pazda and Thorstenson recognize what job seekers no doubt consider as they look for a career to match their personal nature: in some occupations, success is fueled by possessing certain personality qualities. They give examples of industries such as sales and marketing as well as customer service as fields where extraverts thrive (繁荣). Accordingly, applicants for these positions may be viewed more favorably and judged as more competent if they wear highly chromatic clothing.
Regarding the generality of their results, Pazda and Thorstenson note that one of the limitations of their study was their use of participants living in the United States, which means their findings may not predict results in other cultures. They note the possibility that chroma may influence the perception of personality differently in non-Western countries, and that high-chroma clothing may be perceived as at odds with social norms in other cultures. The practical takeaway, at least in the United States, appears to be that bright colors, like the peacock’s tail, will get you noticed. But depending on your goals, consider tailoring your chroma to the circumstances, personally and professionally.
8. What is the focus of the study mentioned in the passage?
A. The cultural implications of high chroma colors.
B. The influence of clothing on viewer perceptions.
C. The connection between clothing and job suitability.
D. The impact of high chroma colors on first impression.
9. What does the underlined phrase “capitalize on” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Draw on. B. Approve of. C. Subscribe to. D. Dig up.
10. Which might be a limitation of the study?
A. The culturally specific findings. B. The unmonitored research process.
C. The outdated data analysis methods. D. The relatively insufficient theoretical basis.
11. What is the practical advice given by the author in the last paragraph?
A. Reserve bright colors for social events. B. Always wear bright colors to be noticed.
C. Avoid bright colors in professional settings. D. Use bright colors strategically based on your goals.
D
In recent decades, experiments have begun to catch up with what people who work closely with animals have always known—that animals have an inner life, and consciousness isn’t uniquely human.
Consciousness is a concept that is extremely difficult to define. There have been many attempts: is it awareness, or awareness of that awareness, or self-awareness instead? But a useful working definition might be that it is any kind of subjective experience, ranging from how we perceive the external world to our inner thoughts and emotions. Because you can never be inside another living being’s head, questions of consciousness are both hard to answer and open to bias (偏见).
Findings of experiments inspired a group of scientists in April to write The New York Declaration Animal Consciousness, which now has over 300 supporters. It states that there is “strong scientific support for conscious experience” in mammals and birds and “at least a realistic possibility of conscious experience” in fish and other species.
That animals have some form of inner life must surely be self-evident to many people who live or work with them, just as I would guess that most carers of newborn babies don’t see these infant as senseless automatic machines. The experiences of people with thorough knowledge of either have historically, been viewed as subjective and biased, as emotional connection tends to influence logical reasoning. Our consciousness leads us to over-empathize with others we cannot truly know, the argument goes.
But, as the biologist Marc Bekoff wrote, if we humans have something, then other animals are likely to have it too. I personally feel that attempts to divorce emotion, feeling and experience from how we see animals can be as unscientific. For too long, we assumed that humans are unique and animals don’t feel pain or emotions the way that we do, a convenient but cruel null hypothesis (无效假设), when we could have started from the position that perhaps they do instead.
12 Which is a key characteristic of consciousness according to the passage?
A. It means any emotional experience of humans.
B. It refers to individual’s subjective experience.
C. It is all about how we perceive the external world.
D. It refers to a common quality shared by all animals.
13. Why are the carers of newborn babies mentioned?
A. To show that animals are just as conscious as human babies.
B. To help readers understand why animals possess consciousness.
C. To argue against the view of people living or working with animals.
D. To explain why animal carers would assume animals have an inner life.
14. What might be the author’s attitude towards Marc Bckoff’s assumption about animal emotions?
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Uncertain.
15. which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Consciousness Improved Through Practice
B. Questions of Human Consciousness Answered
C. Factors Affecting Animal Consciousness Discovered
D. Conscious Experience Found in Certain Animal Species

As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Jane’s dream to be a singer on the stage. At an early age, she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her heart’s content. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing. Jane practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Jane needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with Mary.
That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Jane. Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane’s cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Jane eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of singing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
One day, however, Mary came with good news.

D 9. A 10. A 11. D

根据第二段“Adam D. Pazda and Christopher A. Thorstenson (2019) examined how we perceive people at firs1impression who wear bright colors. They specifically examined the effect of chroma (色度).( Adam D. Pazda和Christopher A. Thorstenson(2019)研究了我们如何看待穿亮色衣服的人的第一印象。
故选A。
根据最后一段“Regarding the generality of their results, Pazda and Thorstenson note that one of the limitations of their study was their use of participants living in the United States, which means their findings may not predict results in other cultures.(关于他们研究结果的普遍性,Pazda和Thorstenson指出,他们研究的局限性之一是他们使用了生活在美国的参与者,这意味着他们的研究结果可能无法预测其他文化的结果)”可知,特定文化的发现可能是这项研究的局限性。故选A。
根据最后一段“But depending on your goals, consider tailoring your chroma to the circumstances, personally and professionally.(但是根据你的目标,考虑根据个人和专业的情况来调整你的色度)”可知,作者在最后一段给出的实用建议是根据你的目标策略性地使用明亮的颜色。故选D。
12. Which is a key characteristic of consciousness according to the passage?
A. It means any emotional experience of humans.
B. It refers to individual’s subjective experience.
C. It is all about how we perceive the external world.
D. It refers to a common quality shared by all animals.
13. Why are the carers of newborn babies mentioned?
A. To show that animals are just as conscious as human babies.
B. To help readers understand why animals possess consciousness.
C. To argue against the view of people living or working with animals.
D. To explain why animal carers would assume animals have an inner life.
14. What might be the author’s attitude towards Marc Bckoff’s assumption about animal emotions?
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Uncertain.
15. which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Consciousness Improved Through Practice
B. Questions of Human Consciousness Answered
C. Factors Affecting Animal Consciousness Discovered
D. Conscious Experience Found in Certain Animal Species
B 13. D 14. C 15. D
由文章第二段中“But a useful working definition might be that it is any kind of subjective experience, ranging from how we perceive the external world to our inner thoughts and emotions. (但一个有用的可行定义可能是,它是任何一种主观体验,从我们如何感知外部世界到我们的内心想法和情绪。)”可知,个体的主观体验是意识的关键特征。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第四段中“That animals have some form of inner life must surely be self-evident to many people who live or work with them, just as I would guess that most carers of newborn babies don’t see these infant as senseless automatic machines. (动物有某种形式的内在生命,这一点对许多与它们一起生活或工作的人来说肯定是不言而喻的,就像我猜大多数照顾新生儿的人不会把这些婴儿视为毫无意义的自动机器一样。)”可知,提到新生儿护理者的目的是为了解释为什么动物护理者会认为动物有某种形式的内在生命。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。由文章最后一段中“But, as the biologist Marc Bekoff wrote, if we humans have something, then other animals are likely to have it too. I personally feel that attempts to divorce emotion, feeling and experience from how we see animals can be as unscientific. (但是,正如生物学家Marc Bekoff所写的那样,如果我们人类有某种东西,那么其他动物很可能也有。我个人认为,试图将情感、感觉和经验与我们看待动物的方式分离开来是不科学的。)”可知,作者认为Marc Bekoff关于动物情感的假设是科学的,并且作者支持这种假设。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第三段“Findings of experiments inspired a group of scientists in April to write The New York Declaration Animal Consciousness, which now has over 300 supporters. It states that there is “strong scientific support for conscious experience” in mammals and birds and “at least a realistic possibility of conscious experience” in fish and other species. (实验的发现启发了一组科学家在4月份撰写了《The New York Declaration Animal Consciousness》,现在有300多名支持者。它指出,在哺乳动物和鸟类中有“强有力的科学支持意识体验”,在鱼类和其他物种中“至少有现实的意识体验可能性”。)”可知,文章主要介绍了科学家在动物身上发现了意识体验,包括哺乳动物、鸟类以及鱼类和其他物种。因此,D选项“Conscious Experience Found in Certain Animal Species (在某些动物物种中发现意识体验)”符合题意。

根据上文“Boxing has been practiced for centuries — it was even one of the sports in the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece.(拳击这项运动已经存在了数个世纪——它甚至曾是古希腊第一届奥运会的参赛项目之一)”以及后文“Hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life participate in the sport every week. But why? The answer lies in the physical, mental and even social benefits boxing can bring.(每周都有成千上万来自各行各业的人参与这项运动。
根据上文“Its help for our body is clear. Whether it’s practicing with a punching (拳打) bag or facing an opponent in the ring, boxing can be an intense form of exercise and give a full-body workout.(它对我们身体的益处是显而易见的。无论是使用沙袋进行练习,还是在拳击台上与对手对抗,拳击都是一种高强度的锻炼方式,能让我们全身得到锻炼)”以及后文“And it can also increase anaerobic (无氧的) fitness — allowing someone to work out harder, for longer. These can, in turn, positively affect other aspects of physical well-being, like heart health and weight management.(而且它还能提高无氧运动能力——使人们能够更努力地锻炼,持续时间也更长。这些效果反过来又会对身体健康的其他方面产生积极影响,比如心脏健康和体重管理)”可知,空前提到拳击对身体的好处显而易见,空后提到拳击还会提高无氧适应性。由此可推知,设空处应该也是拳击对身体的好处的举例说明,并与空后内容为并列关系。A项与此相关,该项中的“can improve our body strength”与空后的“can also increase anaerobic fitness”构成并列关系,都是拳击对身体的好处的举例说明。
根据后文“Boxing can also positively affect someone’s mental well-being. Dr. Jessica Pinchbeck, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Fitness at the Open University, says that boxing can reduce some of the symptoms (症状) of anxiety and sadness. Exercising regularly is already widely known to be good for mental health, but boxing can also bring a sense of focus.(拳击运动还能对人的心理健康产生积极影响。开放大学体育与健身专业的高级讲师杰西卡·平奇贝克博士表示,拳击能够缓解一些焦虑和抑郁的症状。定期锻炼已众所周知对心理健康有益,而拳击还能让人集中注意力)”可知,空后提到拳击对心理健康的益处,设空处要点明本段拳击对心理健康有益处的主旨。F项与此相关,该项中的“But”将拳击对身体的益处过渡到下文对心理健康的益处,其中的“aren’t just good for the body”与空后的“positively affect someone’s mental well-being”衔接紧密,形成递进关系,共同点明本段主旨。
根据上文“And there is a third benefit to putting on boxing gloves. Practicing punches can be done alone, of course.(而且戴上拳击手套还有第三个好处。当然,练习出拳动作是完全可以独自进行的)”以及后文“It also means working with others to train and stay safe. Dr. Gavin Williams, Senior Lecturer in Education at the Open University, says that this teamwork can create a sense of belonging.(这还意味着要与他人合作,共同进行训练并确保自身安全。
根据上文“It also means working with others to train and stay safe. Dr. Gavin Williams, Senior Lecturer in Education at the Open University, says that this teamwork can create a sense of belonging.(这还意味着要与他人合作,共同进行训练并确保自身安全。开放大学教育学高级讲师加文·威廉姆斯博士表示,这种团队合作能够营造出归属感)”可知,本段强调拳击带来的社交益处,且空前提到了团队合作可以产生一种归属感。由此可推知,设空处既要总结本段主旨,又要与空前提到的拳击带来社交的归属感相呼应。D项与此相关, 该项以“So”开头总结本段主旨, 其中的“a sense of group”与空前“a sense of belonging”形成语义上的呼应, 完成社交层面的结论闭环。

故填was denied。

故填the。
故填how。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One day, however, Mary came with good news. She told Jane the school music festival was to be held the next month and that her classmates all expected her to sing on behalf of her class. Jane’s eyes sparkled but responded doubtfully, “Can I...?” Mary and I immediately assured her that she could make it. In the following month, with the help of Mary, Jane kept on practicing singing. Beautiful songs echoed in our house again and smiles began to appear on her face. Finally the big day came when she could present herself.
When the host announced it was Jane’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage. Jane was greeted with warm applause. As she began to sing, the audience got absorbed in her beautiful voice. Seconds after her performance, all the audience rose with thunderous cheers. When wheeled off stage, Jane received praise and bunches of flowers from her teachers and classmates. Jane was moved to tears. The kindness and encouragement from her teachers and classmates stimulated Jane’s enthusiasm for life, making her regain confidence in pursuing her original dream, which I will support wholeheartedly.
