Friends always ask why I, a middle-aged woman with no athletic (运动) talent (天赋), travel to perilous places — the jungles (丛林) of Thailand or Borneo, for example, where the water is often unsafe and the food risky; places with infectious diseases, poisonous snakes and the wildest animals.
I never know how to answer. Nine years ago I suffered a stroke (中风). To prevent another stroke, my doctors told me, I’d have to take dangerously high levels of blood thinner (血液稀释剂) for the rest of my life and any travel would be risky (冒险的).
I had to think about what was important to me: family, of course, and friends. But then what? No matter how many times I thought about it, I could not be happy without travel. Then I had to decide how I might manage the risk.
The first real test of my travel courage came nine months after my stroke when I joined my husband, Jack, on a business trip to China. After we’d toured the remains of a Tang dynasty temple on a high mountain, Jack wanted to ride down on a toboggan (长雪橇).
Before the stroke it would’ve seemed like fun. But now? I hesitated. My mental klaxon (高音喇叭) screamed warnings about the consequences of a cut, a fall, and a crash. Then, gaining confidence from who knew where, I lowered myself carefully into the toboggan, which marked my adventure (冒险) travel come back.
In the years since then, I’ve traveled about twenty-five percent of the time. Through it all, my lucks held out — no deadly falls, no car accidents or serious infections. For me, adventure travel is a risk worth taking. Travel broadens my world and keeps me connected to nature. What’s more, saying “yes” to travel keeps me connected to myself.
4. What does the underlined word “perilous” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Energetic. B. Dangerous. C. Romantic D. Famous.
5. What did the doctors advise the author to do?
A. Do proper exercise. B. Enjoy the rest of her life.
C. Spend more time with her family D. Keep away (远离) from traveling
6. Why did the author mention her travel to China?
A. It was her last adventure. B. She recovered (恢复) her courage (勇气) through it.
C. She liked the beautiful scenery in China. D. It was the most dangerous experience in her life.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. A business trip to China B. Stroke, a dangerous disease
C. How I overcame the fear of disease D. Why I still travel to the wild
C
I wasn’t prepared to be a climate refugee. Not after relocating my family from drought and wildfire California to the “climate shelter” of Asheville, N.C. But less than two months after we moved into our delightfully wooded, mild-weather community, we were forced to leave.
On September 26, the hurricane made its way inland from the Gulfof Mexico through Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Along its path, it tore apart community after community. And then it hit western Appalachia. At 2,000 feet above sea level and 300 miles from the coast, Asheville is a place where people went to get away from destructive hurricanes.
That night, I couldn’t sleep. Trees crashed down around my home as emergency alerts sounded on my phone. Power lines went down. Roads flooded. Despite being within a mile of the French Broad River, we were not told to evacuate (撤离) ahead of the storm.
In the morning, after it seemed the worst had passed, a large pine tree crashed onto the roof directly above my young son’s bedroom while he was playing with LEGOs. He was thankfully unharmed, but it drove home the severity of what was happening around us. My young daughter held me tightly saying over and over, “I’m scared.”
It was hard to get information about what was going on across Asheville. Within hours, we lost power, Internet and even cell service. A neighbor told me we could get information on the radio, so I sat in my car to listen to the local radio station’s updates. That’s how I learned that the water wasn’t safe to drink. The treatment plant was under eight feet of water and the distribution pipes had washed away.
When we heard it would take weeks or longer to restore basic services, I made plans for my family to leave town. We were lucky — we lived near the one highway that was open, and had a full tank of gas and a place to go. So on Sunday we left Asheville to stay with family on the Outer Banks.
8. The author moved to Asheville, N.C. to _______.
A. get closer to the Gulf of Mexico
B. find a new job in South Carolina
C. live near the French Broad River
D. flee California’s drought and wildfire
9. What does the underlined sentence in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. The family realized the pleasure of playing with LEGOs.
B. The family decided to stay in the house despite the danger.
C. The family felt alarmed at the sight of the tree crashing down.
D. The family became more at ease about the situation at that time.
10 What can be inferred from paragragh 5?
A. Timely access to information is important during a disaster.
B. The treatment plant is supposed to be built deep underwater.
C. People must depend on neighbors for survival in a disaster.
D. Protecting water resources promotes a sense of community.
11. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Consequences of a hurricane
B. Measures against the disaster
C. A new beginning in Asheville
D. An account of a climate refugee
D
Final exams are around the comer — but that won’t stop some teenagers putting in the least effort. This may be because their brains aren’t developed enough to properly assess how high the stakes (利害关系) are, and adapt their behaviour accordingly.
Catherine Insel, at Harvard University, and her team asked adolescents between the ages of 13 and 20 to play a game while monitoring their brains. In some rounds of the game, participants could earn 20 cents fora correct response, while an incorrect one would cost them 10 cents. But in rounds with higher stakes, correct responses were worth a dollar, and wrong answers lost the participants 50 cents.
The team found that while the older volunteers performed better in the high stakes rounds, the younger ones didn’t — their performance didn’t change in line with whether the stakes were low or high. And the older the volunteers were, the more improved their performance was.
When the team looked at the brain activity of the volunteers, they found that their ability to improve their performance was linked to how developed their brains were. A region in the brain, which continues to develop until we are at least 25 years old, seemed to be particularly important. The findings explain why some teenagers are so unconcerned when it comes to hazardous behaviors, such as driving too fast, for instance, especially when one of their friends is nearby.
Insel thinks schools should reconsider the way they test performance in teenagers. “This study suggests it’s not a good idea to evaluate school performance in a single final exam”, she says. A better idea would be to use a variety of smaller tests, conducted throughout the year.
It’s not all bad news for teens, though. Teenagers put the same amount of effort into tasks that aren’t “important”, and start to prefer hobbies to school. It could be a good thing, allowing teenagers to learn complex social skills, for example.
12. Why did the researchers set different bets in the game?
A. To teach how to make money.
B. To better monitor participants’ brains.
C. To show the varied risk levels of the game.
D. To meet the needs of different participants.
13. What does the underlined word “hazardous” probably mean?
A. Dangerous. B. Abusive.
C. Specific. D. Addictive.
14. What should be kept in mind while assessing students’ performance?
A. It should not be judged by only one exam.
B. The items in exams should not be too difficult.
C. Exam-focused education should not be adopted.
D. Examination is not a good means of evaluating students.
15. What is Insel’s attitude to teenagers’ putting effort into “unimportant” tasks?
A. Unclear. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.

A Farewell Party
We learned that our class teacher, Mr. Read, was about to be transferred to another school in a week. All the pupils adored Mr. Read as he was a very good and dedicated teacher. He never shouted at us and was very patient with the slower pupils.
Our class decided to hold a farewell (告别) party for this model teacher. But we needed to have the permission of the school’s headmaster first. Judy was given the task of writing to the headmaster for permission to hold the party as her handwriting was the neatest and her language skills were excellent. After the letter was written, all the pupils in the class signed the letter and six pupils, myself included, went to the headmaster’s office on behalf of the whole class.
The headmaster was mildly curious when he saw the six of us in his office. We gave him the letter of request and after reading it in silence, he frowned. He said that the request was very irregular but after the six of us begged him genuinely, he finally changed his mind and gave us the permission. He allowed us to hold the party during the last period of the following Friday, which would be Mr. Read’s last day of teaching in our school.
The whole class was excited after getting the permission. We gathered together after school and planned for the party. After some debate and discussion we finally agreed on the things we needed to do.
On the following Friday, after we came into the classroom, we hid the drinks, food, and the farewell gift—the “Complete Sherlock Holmes”—in a corner so that Mr. Read would not see them as we wanted to surprise him. On the last period of school, our class monitor, Aaron, approached Mr. Read just as he was about to begin the next lesson.
“Sir, we have obtained permission from the headmaster to treat you to a simple farewell party.”

1. 续写词数应 150 左右;

B The family decided to stay in the house despite the danger.
C. The family felt alarmed at the sight of the tree crashing down.
D. The family became more at ease about the situation at that time.
10. What can be inferred from paragragh 5?
A. Timely access to information is important during a disaster.
B. The treatment plant is supposed to be built deep underwater.
C. People must depend on neighbors for survival in a disaster.
D. Protecting water resources promotes a sense of community.
11. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Consequences of a hurricane
B. Measures against the disaster
C. A new beginning in Asheville
D. An account of a climate refugee
D 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第四段中提到的大松树砸到屋顶上,特别是“a large pine tree crashed onto the roof directly above my young son’s bedroom while he was playing with LEGOs(一棵大松树砸在了我小儿子卧室上方的屋顶上,而他当时正在玩乐高)”,以及随后提到的儿子未受伤但这一事件“drove home the severity of what was happening around us(让我们意识到我们周围发生的事情的严重性)”可推知,这句话意味着家人在看到树倒下的情景时感到惊恐。
根据第五段中“It was hard to get information about what was going on across Asheville. Within hours, we lost power, Internet and even cell service.(很难获得关于阿什维尔情况的信息。几个小时之内,我们就失去了电力、网络甚至手机服务)”可知,在灾难期间,很难获取阿什维尔的信息,几小时内就失去了电力、互联网甚至手机服务,说明在灾难期间及时获取信息是很重要的。故选A。

C To show the varied risk levels of the game.
15 What is Insel’s attitude to teenagers’ putting effort into “unimportant” tasks?
A. Unclear. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
C 13. A 14. A 15. B

根据第三段第一句话“The team found that while the older volunteers performed better in the high stakes rounds, the younger ones didn’t — their performance didn’t change in line with whether the stakes were low or high.
故选A。
根据倒数第二段第二句话““This study suggests it’s not a good idea to evaluate school performance in a single final exam”, she says. (“这项研究表明,在一次期末考试中评估学校成绩不是一个好主意”,她说)”可知,不能只通过一次考试来判断学校的成绩。故选A。
根据最后一段“It’s not all bad news for teens, though. Teenagers put the same amount of effort into tasks that aren’t “important”, and start to prefer hobbies to school. It could be a good thing, allowing teenagers to learn complex social skills, for example.(不过,这对青少年来说并不都是坏消息。青少年将同样的精力投入到不“重要”的任务中,并开始喜欢业余爱好而不是上学。这可能是一件好事,比如让青少年学习复杂的社交技能)”可知,作者认为青少年花时间做一些不重要的事情可能也是一件好事,让他们可以学到复杂的社交技巧。由此推知,作者的态度是“赞同的”。故选B。

Head for higher ground and stay there until you are told that the area is safe.(不要等指示才行动。
根据上文“Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can sweep you off your feet. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving.(不要在流动的水中行走。6英寸的流水能把你冲走。如果你必须在水里走,走在水不动的地方)”可知,上文提到了在水中行动,故本句承接前句,介绍在水里行走时方法,故F选项“用一根棍子检查前方地面的牢固程度”符合语境,故选F。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Immediately the pupils brought out the drinks and food. Mr. Read was stunned, bewildered by the little farewell party. He received a freshly baked batch of chocolate cookies, which was made by our hands. “Have a taste!” We chorused expectantly. After the first mouthful, there was a very pleasant look on his face. “Thank you…all of you!” Tears welling up in his eyes, he said in a strangled voice. Then he delivered an impassioned speech, which was laden with emotion, and personal revelations. We followed Mr. Read’s speech attentively, nodding and applauding constantly.
After Mr. Read's speech, I was given the honour of presenting our farewell gift to him. He was such a devoted fan of detective stories that he almost spent all his spare time indulging in deducing and solving puzzles. So he gave me a grateful hug after he gingerly unwrapped the gift, eyes glinting with appreciation. When the party was over and all of us were supposed to go home, he hesitated for a while, his eyes growing tender. “I won’t say ‘farewell’, for this word sometimes indicates we never seeing each other again. I will say ‘goodbye’ as usual.” He bowed deeply and departed in the last rays of the setting sun, with tears streaming down his face.
Immediately the pupils brought out the drinks and food. For an instant, Mr. Read was speechless and his eyes took on a misty look. Then, he was back to his normal self again. As he took his first bite of a cake, everyone cheered and clapped. After the meal, Mr. Read gave a farewell speech. He spoke for fifteen minutes, thanking the class for taking the trouble to hold the party and for being such caring pupils. His speech was also peppered with sound advice for us.
After Mr. Read’s speech, I was given the honour of presenting our farewell gift to him. We knew him to be a great fan of mystery and detective novels, so we had bought for him the “Complete Sherlock Holmes”. When he unwrapped the gift, we saw two large beads of tears rolling down his cheeks. He was very deeply moved. Just at that time, the school bell rang. It was time to say goodbye, and each pupil hugged Mr. Read for one last time before heading for home.
