六、读后续写
58.
Meanwhile, the guy stayed close to me, continually signaling for me to stop. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a purse on the floor of my car. Yes, there was a purse, but it wasn’t mine. Then I saw the guy right outside my window, waving my purse! I couldn’t believe my eyes. I pulled over to the curb, and the young man stopped his motorcycle by the passenger side. Through the window I had opened, he handed me my purse. “Grandma sent me to give you this. She picked it up by mistake. She is so sorry.” He was still smiling. This time, his smile didn’t appear threatening, simply gracious.
Speechless, I handed him his grandma’s purse, and then he took off. After retrieving a few dollars, I waved for the young man to stop, hoping to reward him, but he had disappeared into the night. I did manage to yell, “Thank you!” I had assumed he was a criminal because he looked “wild” but he was really an angel who went out of his way to help a stranger. Sometimes, we misjudge a person’s character because they don’t conform to what we believe is proper. They may not drive a stylish car, live on the “right” side of town, or dress in what we consider to be fashionable, but who’s to say they are not equal to or better than we are?

A few months into my first year of teaching middle-school English, I carefully structured the class time for silent, light-dimmed independent reading. Most of the students were buried in a novel at their desks. But six or seven kids would just be window-staring or doodling (涂鸦), the book lying sad and forgotten before them.
I saw their resistance to reading as both a teaching challenge and a personal offence. I tried “sticks and carrots” method: assigning mini book reports and giving nonreaders bad grades as punishment, creating whole-class reading challenges with pizza parties as rewards and offering graphic novels and magazines to encourage them. None worked. Instead, nonreaders hated reading and me more.
The problem kept me awake. Then I remembered my 11th-grade English teacher, Ms. Germanas. She had made the whole class read The Scarlet Letter by having everyone sit in a circle and read aloud each afternoon. Though no one enjoyed the novel, we finished it. This went against my goal of fostering independent-minded students driven by love for literature and human connection, but I had to change. I abandoned independent reading and decided to read a book together as a class.
That Friday, students found desks in a circle, each with a copy of Of Mice and Men written by Steinbeck. I told them we’d read aloud page by page. It worked. Gradually, nonreaders stopped staring or doodling. A few weeks later, even the most inveterate (积习难改的) nonreader listened, followed the book, and mouthed the words.
I taught English for another decade after that class. Each year, although I was asked to spend less time on literature, more time training students to hunt down main ideas of the text, I refused and kept reading novels aloud. I’ll never forget the dark, quiet classroom when we reached the tragic final pages of Steinbeck’s classic. There seemed to be very little happening in the world outside the windows.
24.Why does the author mention his early teaching experience?
A. To express his complaints. B. To arouse readers’ sympathy.
C. To present his puzzlement. D. To inform readers of a finding.
25.How did the author try to deal with the students’ resistance to reading?
A. Punishing nonreaders with low marks. B. Treating top students to pizzas.
C. Rewarding top students with magazines. D. Assigning nonreaders more reports.
26.What did the writer learn from Ms. Germanas?
A. Focusing on literature. B. Reading aloud together.
C. Searching for main ideas. D. Highlighting independent reading.
27.What does the underlined sentence imply?
A. The students’ reading ability improved.
B. The students’ interests have changed.
C. The students were absorbed in reading.
D. The students preferred tragic novels.

Britain became the world’s first major economy to quit coal power when it shut off the Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Plant this week. It was a milestone for the country which was the first nation in the world to power its economy with the dirty fuel in the early 19th century.
The Romans found coal in western England as early as the third century and coal mining became a profitable business in the 1600s across England, Scotland and Wales. Around the turn of the 18th century, the coal-powered steam engine was invented and used to power industry in Britain. In the early 19th century, a British engineer invented the coal-fired train which sped commerce across the country. Then in 1882, Thomas Edison’s company opened the first coal-fired power plant in London. By the 1950s, British coal consumption peaked and about 96% of its electricity came from burning it. But the pollution became so serious that the word “smog” was coined. In the so-called Great Smog of 1952, at least 4,000 people died within four days in London.
Since then Britain has started to seek cleaner energy. In the 1960s, it discovered natural gas in the North Sea. In 2023, about a third of its electricity came from gas. In recent decades, Britain has also invested massively in renewable energy. It is now the world’s second-largest offshore wind market, after China. In 2023, offshore wind generated 17% of the nation’s electricity.
At the same time, Britain has tightened the control on air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. “In the early 2000s, the British government was writing the world’s first set of laws on climate change,” recalls Michael Lewis, CEO of the Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Plant. “Those laws banned new coal stations from being built, and taxed coal plants for their pollution. Such measures have made burning coal increasingly uneconomical.”
Looking ahead, Britain aims to quit natural gas by 2030, and cut CO2 emissions entirely by 2050.
28.Why is the Great Smog mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To show the side effects of burning coal.
B. To tell the risks of coal mining.
C. To explain a newly coined word.
D. To criticize the first power plant in London.
29.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Britain’s potential in emission cuts.
B. Britain’s heavy reliance on natural gas.
C. Britain’s strength at the offshore wind market.
D. Britain’s efforts to replace the dirty coal.
30.The Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Plant is closed down probably due to ________.
A. a newly passed law B. the lack of new coal stations
C. the increasing operation costs D. a shortage of coal
31.When does Britain plan to abandon natural gas?
A. By 2035. B. By 2030. C. By 2045. D. By 2050.
D
During my first year in college, I was silent. I was too afraid of saying something wrong.
I declared a religion major as a sophomore and took a class from Barbara, a young theologian. My mind was split open by a range of new thinkers and writers and by the quality of Barbara’s questions, I finally had something to say and the energy to say it. I was a frequent visitor during Barbara’s office hours, a rocket of words. She listened and calmly responded, a perfect contrast to my feverish ramblings. I loved what she saw in me, which was a range of abilities I had never seen in myself. In the following years, our relationship gradually deepened, but I was always conscious of a teacher-student dynamic.
This changed fundamentally when I became a parent. I had my son in March 2010, and Barbara was one of the first to congratulate me. When, nine months later, my child was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease, a rare and always terminal illness with no treatment and no cure, she sent me a letter-handwritten on a white legal pad. For the next two and a half years, Barbara wrote me regular, sometimes weekly, letters, remarkable letters that are revealing, loving, and kind.
The letter written right before my son died, when he was three, was the most personal and perhaps the most profound. “I think he’s made you better by opening up the great fire of your love,” she wrote, “with his small but magnificent existence. ” I have never in my life read a more deeply comforting sentence, one that spoke to my grandest hopes, my deepest fears, and the only faith that remains to me, which is a belief in chaos. Our love had bloomed and deepened from a guarded mutual respect to a richer, deeper friendship.
Mentors are meant to lead those in their charge into fresh understanding, help them sort and filter new experiences, assist in the project of making sense out of the chaos that is human life. Mentors observe and accompany the darkest despair, the wildest sorrow, and the most unexpected joy.
32.What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. The author took the class because she excelled1 in theology.
B. Their relationship changed significantly beyond a teacher-student mode.
C. The author was a frequent visitor to Barbara’s home after working hours.
D. Barbara’s peaceful exterior was a contrast to the author’s overexcited talk.
33.What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The way Barbara treated her students.
B. The fact that the author kept silent in class.
C. The role of the author as a college student.
D. The relationship between Barbara and the author.
34.What transformed the relationship between Barbara and the author from a mutual respect to a deeper friendship?
A. Barbara’s efforts to solve the problem.
B. Barbara’s sympathy shown in the letter.
C. The author’s in-depth understanding of Barbara.
D. Barbara’s congratulations on the birth of the author’s son.
35.What does the author think of Barbara?
A. Demanding and dedicated. B. Responsible and reasonable.
C. Insightful and inspiring. D. Aggressive and ambitious.
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5 分)
It is normal for everyone to worry from time to time. However, for some individuals, this worry can grow into a dominant force, stealing their peace and consuming valuable time. 36
Psychologists have developed several theories to explain chronic worrying. One well-known explanation is the “avoidance model”. This theory suggests that chronic worriers replace thoughts of clear problem outcomes with a general sense of negativity, which is harder to address. Furthermore, they often hold a superstitious (迷信的) belief that overthinking a threat can magically prevent it from happening.
37 A more effective approach, based on scientific understanding, involves breaking down the worry process.
First, write your worry down. Anxiety, of which worry is a component, is essentially just unfocused fear. When your fear has no clear target, it feels like a confusing, hard-to-handle fantasy. 38 You can do this by making a list: When you are worried about a bunch of things, take a sheet of paper and write down the top five worries in your life. This clarifies and limits your sources of discomfort, making worries emotionally easier to manage.
Second, shift from problems to outcomes. Remember that worry generally focuses on problems but avoids actual outcomes. If you could voice that fear, you would give yourself a chance to plan what to do. So, on your worry list, write down the best, the worst, and the most likely outcomes for each problem. 39 This makes worries specific and gives you a plan — letting you mentally set the problem aside and feel less anxious.
Third, fight your superstitious belief. Give up the magical thinking that if you pain yourself enough about some uncertainty, you will somehow improve the situation. 40 Tell yourself “My worrying won’t change the course of events”. Use the science-backed steps here to strengthen this rational thought and break free from useless overthinking.
A. Simply trying to stop worrying rarely works.
B. Then add what you would do in each instance.
C. Chronic worriers often struggle with uncertainty.
D. The power of your thoughts will not alter the universe.
E. It’s much better to focus on the fear by putting it into words.
F. This kind of negativity makes it hard for them to take practical steps.
G. If you are a chronic worrier, you are likely familiar with this struggle.

McMahan can trace (追溯) his 46 to become a physician back to a series of 47 he saw in a magazine when he was a teenager. His grandfather was a doctor and had an issue of Life magazine on a shelf in his office. The photo story by Eugene Smith, Country Doctor, showed a devoted doctor 48 his patients in rural Colorado.
“Those pictures were really 49 ,” McMahan says. “The doctor’s work is 50 to what we do now here in Alaska. ”
The Klukwan clinic has two exam rooms, a dental suite and a small 51 for basic tests. It is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“I am trying my best to help the patients with 52 resources,” McMahan says. “I can’t get a CT scan done in 10 minutes. ”
The 53 of regular primary care like this is to keep people out of the emergency room. But in such a small, remote town, 54 injured or ill patients have to be sent to the nearest hospital by a helicopter.
“In part because of the 55 transportation, Alaska has the highest health care costs in the country,” McMahan adds.

56.China’s Huawei Technologies said at an annual customer event on Thursday that it would roll out the world’s most powerful AI computing architectures in late 2026 and late 2027. The new architectures, 56 are called “superpods”, can combine the power of thousands of chips.
“This is 57 significant breakthrough. It signals that Huawei can rely 58 less powerful China-made chips to keep pace with the global leaders such as Open AI and Google without access to the world’s most powerful chips, 59 (notable) those from America’s market-leading Nvidia,” said Charlie Dai, an analyst at the research firm Forrester Research.
In the fast 60 (develop) field of artificial intelligence, the 61 (compete) between America and China is very hot. The American government has been restricting what can 62 (sell) to China, including 63 (it) most advanced chips. To meet the long-term demand for computing power, one of the 64 (strategy) is to use many more chips and develop new architectures 65 (make) them work well together.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In the baking heat, I watched the elderly woman struggle with a walker, loaded with bags of groceries. I was driving north, and she was walking south. I’d seen her before, each time feeling guilty I didn’t offer her a lift. Today, the guilt won. I turned back, pulled over, and offered her a ride.
The woman looked weary, sweat pouring down her face. I placed her walker and bags into my trunk, helped her inside, and drove off. “Bless you, child,” she murmured. She directed me to go farther south.
Passing under a bridge, she asked me to pull over. She rolled down her window and called out to several homeless people, “Come by later! Spaghetti night!” She waved and smiled, her smile erasing ten years off her face. We continued south, chatting easily. Her name was Ida. She worked as a bagger at the nearby grocery store and often missed the last bus because of working overtime.
Suddenly, I realised we were on the “wrong side of town”. It was starting to get dark, and I began to feel uneasy. We continued down unfamiliar streets finally to an old apartment building. Several young men had gathered around the entrance, looking threatening. Some were on motorcycles, and one, wearing a hoodie (连帽衫) over his bushy, long hair, was staring at me. My discomfort grew, but Ida seemed fine. She directed a couple of the guys to help with her groceries. She thanked me, and I drove away as fast as I could.
Suddenly, the roar of a motorcycle sounded behind me. It was that hoodie guy! He didn’t overtake; he just kept pace, waving for me to stop. No way was I going to stop for a stranger on a deserted street. In a panic, I reached down for my purse to get my cell phone to call 911. I felt an empty seat. My purse wasn’t there! “She stole my purse!” I may have used stronger language. So much for acts of kindness, I thought.
