Everyone has that special person in their lives who act s like a role model to them. For many of us, including me, that person is our own mother. But in my case, there is another person who is my perfect mentor (导师) and friend. It’s Nana, my mum’s father.
My Nana, since I was a kid, brought me up in the most unforgettable way possible, babying me by buying toys and presenting me with sweets and candies constantly and spending time with me, which created an everlasting bond between us.
Fast-forward a couple of years, when I began to outgrow these toys or candies, Nana didn’t just stop there. He began taking me almost every weekend to the local club where he had a membership. It meant the world to me as I could do absolutely whatever I pleased there. Other than that, Nana would take me to many parks, especially when there was a flower show on or something of that sort. He was very enthusiastic about nature and spent hours around it, enjoying what it had to offer.
Anyhow, his immense love didn’t end there...
My Nana had grown older. Now he finds it hard to drive and walk too much, so he prefers to stay at home. What I do now is to try to give him company and talk to him mainly about his travels at sea, as he was a sailor, and the various countries he visited and how he spent his early years and about my school, etc.
I’ll never be able to repay my Nana for all the kindness and comfort he gave to me. Thank you, Nana, from the bottom of my heart for all you’ve done for me.
24. For most people, who would set an example to them in their lives?

27. How does the writer repay her old Nana?
A. By doing what he did at early years. B. By traveling with him behind the wheel.
C. By companying and chatting with him. D. By sending him gifts for what he did for her.

New technology is making it possible for people to make videos of people appearing to say things they never actually said. The videos are known as “deepfakes”.
The word “deepfake” is a combination of “deep learning”(an important part of artificial intelligence) and “fake” (not real). Deepfake software allows people to replace part of a video with another video image. The result is a fake video.
The software allows you to put your face over the face of a talking president or movie star. This process will make your face speak in the voice of that president or movie star. Many people are worried the technology will be used to trick voters. Lawmakers, intelligence officials and media experts have expressed concern about deepfakes. They warn the false videos could be used to threaten America’s national security.
“We have entered a new world where it is going to be difficult to know how to believe what we see,” said Hany Farid, a researcher at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He added, “the opposite result is also worrying. People will become so used to seeing false videos that they will be more likely to doubt a real video. ”
The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency(DARPA) is already working to develop technologies to identify fake images and videos. But Senator Rubio says, now the identification is difficult and takes a very long time.
“It takes advanced technology to be able to show that it’s not real. And by the time that’s done, it’s been widely used.”
Rubio and other lawmakers say people will need to take more responsibility to identify fakes.
28. What is “deepfake” software used to do?
A. Kill some virus. B. Make fake videos.
C. Make excellent movies. D. Benefit stars and leaders.
29. Why was Hany Farid worried?
A. False videos might mislead people. B. It was too difficult to use the software.
C. Private information might be given away. D. Some people might be addicted to “deepfakes”.
30. What can we know from Rubio’s words?
A. It is really difficult to identify fake videos.
B. The technology “deepfake” has been banned.
C. The government is responsible for identification.
D. National security is being threatened by “deepfake”.
31. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Ways to identify fake videos. B. People’s different views on “deepfake”.
C. A new technology with a bright future. D. A worrying new technology “deepfake”.

The research, led by Professor Miles Richardson, tracked the loss of nature from people’s lives over 220 years. In the research published in the journal Earth, Richardson also discovered the disappearance of natural words like river from books between 1800 and 2020, which peaked at a 60.6% decline in 1990.
A computer modelling predicts an ongoing “extinction of experience” with future generations continuing to lose an awareness of nature because it is not present in increasingly built-up neighbourhoods, while parents no longer pass on a love for the natural world. Other studies have found parental nature connectedness is the strongest predictor of whether a child will become close to nature.
“Nature connectedness is now seen as a root cause of the environmental crisis,” Richardson said. “It’s also important for our mental health. There’s a need for great change if we’re going to change society’s relationship with nature.” However, he was surprised that reversing(扭转) the trend requires much larger changes than expected. For instance, while making a city 30% greener seems like a great step, his model suggests it might need to be ten times greener to truly repair our connection to nature. More effective are measures that develop a deep-rooted love for nature from early childhood, such as “forest school” programs for young kids.
A further challenge is the time required. The model shows that policies to transform early education and urban environments need to be in place over the next 25 years to work. If achieved, however, a stronger connection to nature would then become self-sustaining for future generations.
32. What does the underlined phrase “extinction of experience” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Becoming less aware of nature.
B. Fewer and fewer green neighbourhoods.
C. The disappearance of natural words from books.
D. The closing down of “forest school” programs.
33. What is the key to children’s closeness to nature?
A. Their parents’ relationship with nature.
B. The number of natural words they read in books.
C. The size of green spaces in their neighborhoods.
D. Their participation in after-school nature clubs.
34. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The cause of environmental crisis.
B. Parents’ impact on children’s love for nature.
C. How to restore people’s nature connectedness.
D. Why we need to build connection with nature.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards improving this connectedness?
A. Doubtful. B. Anxious. C. Hopeful. D. Uncertain.

David joined the long queue at the bus station, waiting to get a ticket for the next bus. His thoughts were far away — he was already looking forward to the weekend and the calm, relaxing time he’d have at home.
He walked slowly toward the ticket window, and just then, a sight caught his eye and made him stop in his tracks. A man and a young boy were sitting on the cold, hard floor in a corner of the waiting area. In front of them was a piece of cardboard with poor handwriting that read, “Lost phone and wallet. Need to get back to Boston. The bus leaves in an hour. Please help with bus ticket money, $32.”
David stood there watching the passers-by each would cast a quick glance at the cardboard sign, then look away just as fast. Some even shook their heads in disbelief or whispered something under their breath as they passed. David felt a wave of pity, yet he couldn’t help but stay on his guard (保持警惕). He had read so many news stories where people made up emergencies to cheat others out of their money.
Just as he was about to turn his attention back to the line, he made eye contact with the young boy. With big, innocent (无辜的) eyes, the boy looked up at him, and anyone could see both hope and despair in them. The eyes cut straight through David’s doubts, and before he could think twice, he was already moving towards them. “Excuse me,” David said, kneeling down to meet the boy at eye level. “What happened?” The man, Michael, lifted his eyes. “It’s all gone,” he murmured, his voice heavy with exhaustion. “Our things…everything was lost on the way to the bus station. Now, all we need is to find a way back home.”

小作文范文(15):
The school sports meet, which took place last Tuesday in the stadium, was a great success.
The meet started with an opening ceremony, featuring a vibrant march of students athletes. Energetic crowds cheered for their classmates competing in more than 10 thrilling events.Among many great performances was LiHua's win in the 1500- metre running race. Perhaps the biggest cheer of the meet was for the students when they set a new record.
Thought tired, the participants left with joyful smiles. Many expressed their love for the event, saying it provided them with an opportunity to relax, build up their body as well as enhance their friendship.
读后续写范文(25):
David nodded and reached for his wallet. He counted out 32 dollars and handed it to Michael, who thanked him repeatedly with tears in his eyes. The boy also smiled brightly, his innocent eyes now filled with pure joy. David patted the boy’s head gently and said, “Hope you two get home safely.” Then he hurried back to the ticket line, his heart warm despite the cold waiting area. He didn’t regret his decision—even if it was a trick, he couldn’t bear to disappoint the boy’s trusting gaze.
As promised, David received a call that night. It was Michael, calling from Boston to say they had arrived home safely. Michael thanked him again sincerely, adding that he would transfer the money back the next day. He also mentioned how much the boy had talked about David on the bus, saying he wanted to “be a kind man like him” when he grew up. David smiled as he hung up the phone. He realized that a small act of kindness not only helped others in need but also planted a seed of goodness in a young heart. Sometimes, choosing to trust and help was the most rewarding thing one could do.
