By the time Nalin Kamat was 13, the Toronto teen had been well on his way to becoming a working artist. He had already had his first show at a local art center. showcasing his series titled “Dispositions”, which illustrated his own growth during adolescence.
Yet he wanted more—specifically to start showing his work in a juried exhibition, an exhibition with judges, where a group of art experts would evaluate and select pieces in a competitive review process. That’s when he hit an obstacle, discovering in the very last line of a multi-page application that the smallest age for submission was 18.
However, being refused became a motivation for creation. “I thought it’d be really cool if I could provide the opportunity to more young artists,” says Nalin, now 15. With the support of his parents, in January 2023, Nalin rented a storefront and founded Little EGG Gallery, which is now profitable enough to make ends meet by charging a small hanging fee for any displayed work. In turn, Little EGG helps promote young talent by showcasing their work.
Not long after opening, David Griffin, a professor and artist of Ontario College of Art and Design University, stepped into the gallery and met Nalin. Griffin considered him as someone special: “a strong young artist with a really excellent idea—creating a space for showing the natural genius of young people. It was a void (空白) in the art world.” There Nalin asked Griffin to help judge an upcoming competition. The first show with judges was last spring, and five-year-old Jack Gamble won for his abstract painting titled “Pokemon”.
As Nalin is busy with school, life and his own art, Little EGG is mostly open by appointment only, but he’s still committed to growing it with seasonal and themed shows scheduled a few times a year.
4. What do we know about Nalin?
A. He drew teenagers’ growth in his work.
B. He became a working artist when aged 13.
C. He was disqualified for a juried exhibition.
D. He showed his series at the capital art center.
5. Why did Nalin decide to set up Little EGG Gallery?
A. To promote artists by showcasing their works.
B. To form the association between different galleries.
C. To expand his own business through themed shows.
D. To show young artists’ talent by offering them a stage.
6. What kind of person is Nalin according to the text?
A. Helpful and cautious. B. Devoted and creative.
C. Humorous and intelligent. D. Knowledgeable and ambitious.
7. What can we learn from Nalin Kamat’s story?
A. Wisdom arises from experience. B. Everything comes to those who wait.
C. Luck matters to one’s career success. D. Innovative thoughts increase one’s chances.
C
If you consider yourself reasonably intelligent and educated, you might assume that you understand how the world works - from everyday inventions to natural phenomena. But think about this: How does a toilet flush? Why can sunny days be colder than cloudy days? Could you give a detailed answer, or only a vague (模糊的) idea? Many people, when asked to explain, are completely at a loss. This bias is known as an “illusion of knowledge.
The concept was first identified in 2002 by Rozenblit and Keil at Yale, the phenomenon was revealed through studies where participants rated how well they thought they could explain scientific processes before writing in-depth explanations. Initially confident, many produced only sketchy accounts and were surprised by how little they knew. The Yale researchers argued that this overconfidence arose from the ease of visualising processes – such as picturing a helicopter’s flight — which created a false sense of understanding. Later studies showed that having online resources at our fingertips may feed our overconfidence, as we mistake the wealth of knowledge on the internet for our own memories.
The illusion of knowledge does not remain restricted to scientific curiosities. It can shape our decisions and behaviour on a daily basis. In the workplace, for example, it may lead us to overstate our expertise in interviews, overlook the contributions of our colleagues and take on jobs for which we are ill-prepared.
What can people do to avoid these pitfalls (陷阱)? One simple solution is to test yourself. If you are assessing your ability to handle an unfamiliar task, don’t rely on a vague sense of what it involves. Instead, think carefully through each step, and you may discover significant gaps to address before acting. It also helps to talk with an expert, who can help you check false assumptions. Given the role of online habits, pause and try to recall a fact before searching. Feeling the discomfort of ignorance can foster a more realistic view of what you truly know.
The aim, with all of this, is to cultivate a little more humility — one of the classic“intellectual virtues” celebrated by philosophers. By recognising our illusions of knowledge and admitting the limits of our understanding, we may all sidestep some unfortunate thinking traps to enjoy wiser decision making.
8. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By making a contrast. B. By quoting an expert.
C. By providing background. D. By explaining reasons.
9. Which daily habit most likely fuels the illusion of knowledge?
A. Watching short videos for entertainment.
B. Memorizing vocabulary lists without practice.
C. Bookmarking articles instead of reading them.
D. Downloading lecture PPTs as learning materials.
10. What does paragraph 3 focus on regarding the illusion of knowledge?
A. Its roles in job-hunting markets.
B. Its consequences in everyday life.
C. Its significance in work environment.
D. Its demonstration in scientific studies.
11. What can help us cultivate the “intellectual virtues”?
A. Handling unfamiliar tasks.
B. Hiding personal ignorance.
C. Identifying knowledge gaps.
D. Challenging philosophers’ ideas.

From rolling hills to mountain ranges, views make any road trip memorable, but for blin d passengers this is part of the experience they miss. Motor company Ford tries to change that. It teamed up with GTB Rom a and AedoProject—to develop a technology that will give those unfortunate passengers a way to feel nature’s beauty through their car windows.
The prototype (原型) of the smart car window has a device with an outside-facing camera. With just a press of a button, the system takes a picture of the current view. The colorful picture is then turned into an image with different shades of grey through, LED lights, which vibrates (震动) differently. As the finger passes over different regions of the image, its shaking movements provide feedback through the sense of touch to the person using it. The smart window also comes with a voice assistant that uses AI to identify the scene and help the passengers get information on what they’re seeing.
“As the prototype started taking shape, we realized we were giving birth to a completely new language that would give blind people a new chance to visualize and experience traveling,” Federico Russo.-one director of GTBRoma, said. “When the idea was at its first stage, we looked for suppliers all around the world to make it come to life.” He believes the technology can be employed not just in cars. “It could be introduced into schools and in stituations for blind people as a tool that could be used in multiple ways.”
The technology may show up in a Ford autonomous vehicle. It’s known that the company is testing their technology and future business model and struggling to figure out how an autonomous vehicle gives different passengers the details needed to get from one destination to another. It’s unclear when this technology will be made available. However, the idea of building something for the less advanced is indeed a kind and influential action.
12 How does the smart car window work?
A. By sorting shaking movements. B. By recording the view with a camera.
C. By translating scenery into vibrations. D. By presenting different shades of colors.
13. What can we know about the technology according to Federico Russø?
A. It will have wide application. B. It will be used in schools first.
C. It will be tested around the world. D. It will understand different languages.
14. What difficulty is Ford facing currently?
A. How to explore their future business model.
B. How the technology is applied to everyday life.
C. How to produce autonomous cars in large numbers.
D. How an autonomous vehicle provides route information.
15. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. AI-based Window Adds Fun to Road Trips
B. Ford Develops a System for the Blind to Drive
C. Smart Window Lets Blin d Passengers Feel Views
D. Technology Makes Blind People’s Trip Enjoyable

Can't Resist Junk Food? Study Suggests You Try This Simple Trick
You're tired and hungry. Then you catch a whiff of something delicious probably fried and almost certainly fattening. It is fried chicken!____16____A new research says that exposing to the smell of junk food for at least two minutes can actually help you make healthier food choices.
Let's take a closer look at this process. Have you ever noticed that whatever appetizing treat catches your nose's attention tends to be most appealing just after you first smell it? What will happen if you're standing in line after a couple of minutes?____17____ And recent science says that this is actually the right moment to walk away.
The results of a series of experiments, including field studies at a supermarket and at a middle school cafeteria, show that extended exposure (of more than two minutes) to junk food smell (e. g,cookie smell) leads to lower purchases of unhealthy foods compared with healthy smell (e.g.strawberry smell).____18____That is why long exposure to junk food smell can be as satisfactory as actually having it in your mouth, which in turn decreases the desire for consumption of junk food.
____19____When the exposure to smell of healthy food were examined, food choices were not profoundly influenced. The reason for this is that healthy food are not connected with reward in our brain and therefore have little influence on what we desire.
So next time you're feeling you don't have the will power to resist that French fries, it might be as simple as sitting there and smelling all that sweetness for just a minute or two. ____20____
A. But wait a minute before you order.
B. It's a response that has been researched.
C. Get the satisfaction with none of the calories.
D. It isn't quite as irresistible as it was just moments ago.
E. However, it's not the same case with smell of healthy food.
F. It's the same as actually eating it because your desire to eat it is satisfied.
G. The brain doesn't necessarily distinguish between a pleasurable smell or taste.

A determined 10-year-old girl Callie lived with her parents and older brother, Ben, on a quiet farm. Though she was small and thin, she loved helping with housework, especially feeding the horses in their big barn (畜棚). One side of the barn housed the horse stalls (马厩), while the other side was piled with hay bales (干草捆) for feeding.
One afternoon Callie went into the barn to feed the horses. As she walked towards the tall stacks of hay, she suddenly stopped. A tiny, weak sound came through the dusty air. Meow... meow...
Her heart jumped. A kitten must be trapped in the hay! Breathing hard, she ran back to find Ben and her father. “Dad! Ben! Come quick! A kitten is stuck in the hay!” she called urgently. Ben sighed, putting down his tools. Her father looked doubtful. “Probably just the wind, Callie,” he said gently. But they followed her to the barn.
They stood quietly near the hay stacks, listening. The barn was silent. “Hear anything?” Ben asked. Their father shook his head. “Nothing, sweetheart. Maybe it was just a mouse. Don’t worry about it.” Disappointed, Callie watched them leave.
After dinner, Callie slipped back to the barn, determined. She stood still, listening attentively. And there it was again! Meow... meow... Weaker now, but clear. She raced back to the house. Her father was watching TV.
“Dad, please!” she pleaded (恳求). “I heard it again! It is a kitten! Please, just come check one more time?” He looked unwilling but saw the real worry in her eyes. “Alright, alright, one last look.”
He returned a few minutes later. “Callie, I listened hard. All I heard was an owl outside. No kitten. Try not to worry.” He gave her a tired smile. “Thanks for checking, Dad.” Callie whispered, though she still felt uneasy.

根据第一段“If you consider yourself reasonably intelligent and educated, you might assume that you understand how the world works - from everyday inventions to natural phenomena. But think about this: How does a toilet flush? Why can sunny days be colder than cloudy days? Could you give a detailed answer, or only a vague idea? Many people, when asked to explain, are completely at a loss. 故选A项。
第二段末句提到“Later studies showed that having online resources at our fingertips may feed our overconfidence, as we mistake the wealth of knowledge on the internet for our own memories.(后来的研究表明,唾手可得的网络资源可能会助长我们的过度自信,因为我们把互联网上的知识财富误认为是我们自己的记忆。)”

12. How does the smart car window work?

Then you catch a whiff of something delicious, probably fried and almost certainly fattening.
____19____When the exposure to smell of healthy food were examined food choices were not profoundly influenced.
A 17. D 18. G 19. E 20. F
根据下一句“A new research says that exposing to the smell of junk food for at least two minutes can actually help you make healthier food choices."可知,暴露在垃圾食品中至少两分钟会帮助你选择健康食品,所以本句与等待时间有关,表达“但是在预定之前先等一下”。故A选项“但是在预定之前先等一下”切题。故选A。
根据前句“it might be as simple as sitting there and smelling all that sweetness for just a minute or two."(最简单的方法是坐在那里闻上一两分钟香甜的味道)与选项中“It’s the same as actually eating it because your desire to eat it is satisfied.

故填who。
consist of“包括,由……组成”。此处描述的是一般事实,所以时态用一般现在时,且主语The book是第三人称单数,所以谓语动词用consist的第三人称单数形式。故填consists。
【38题详解】
考查介词。句意:邓洛普从遥远的甘肃乡村探索到历史悠久的扬州美食。from... to...“从……到……”,为固定短语,其中to为介词。故填to。
from... to...“从……
本句谓语为are encouraged,此处为非谓语动词,encourage sb. to do sth. 故填to appreciate。
故填an。
故填is reflected。

Dear classmates,
Our discussion on dictionary tools was really inspiring. For me, electronic dictionary pens are my top choice. They’re lightweight to carry, and with a quick scan, we get accurate meanings instantly — no more flipping through thick paper dictionaries when reading.
Their built-in audio also lets us learn correct pronunciations right away. But paper dictionaries, with detailed examples, help us grasp word usage deeply. I suggest combining both: use pens for speed and paper ones for in-depth learning. Let’s make tools work better for us!
Thank you!

One afternoon, Callie went into the barn to feed the horses. As she walked towards the tall stacks of hay, she suddenly stopped. A tiny, weak sound came through the dusty air. Meow... meow...
Her heart jumped. A kitten must be trapped in the hay! Breathing hard she ran back to find Ben and her father. “Dad! Ben!
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

“I have no choice but to get help!” Callie thought to herself.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
That night, Callie woke up suddenly. The weak cries filled her mind. She couldn’t rest. Quietly, she put on her coat, took a flashlight and slipped out. Inside the barn, near the hay stacks, Callie held her breath, listening with full attention. Then, it came: Meow... meow... Her flashlight beam swept across the bales. There! Near the bottom of a tall stack, she spotted a tiny movement-a small patch of gray fur barely visible between two enormous bales. She rushed over and pushed the bales again, but they wouldn’t move.
“I have no choice but to get help!” Callie thought to herself. She raced back home and quickly awoke Ben and their father. Seeing Callie’s worried face and absolute certainty, they both hurried with her back to the barn. Working together, Ben and their father carefully moved the heavy hay bales which Callie pointed at. Eventually, a narrow passage was revealed. There was a tiny gray kitten, its eyes wide with fright. Trembling and exhausted, it let out another pitiful meow. Carefully, Callie’s father reached in and gently held the little creature out. Callie’s heart swelled with relief and joy as she looked at the rescued kitten, safe and warm in her father’s large, gentle hands.
