Rising temperatures might boost crop production in cold regions but negatively impact production in warmer areas. Wheat and rice — which benefit from more CO2 in the atmosphere — could see growing output, while corn and sorghum (高粱) could see a decline with warmer temperatures. Farmers can adjust their practices to a warmer climate in four key ways: Farmers can change WHAT they plant. This could be an entirely different type of crop: corn instead of wheat. Or a different variety of a specific crop. FOUR KEY WAYS Farmers can change WHERE crops are planted. If temperatures rise in fall, crop production can shift north or southwards towards more suitable temperatures. Farmers can change HOW crops are managed. Giving crops the right amount of water, nutrition, and protection from insects and disease can help reduce some impacts of climate change. Farmers can change WHEN they plant. Farmers can plant earlier or later in the year, depending on when spring arrives. Adjusting planting dates requires no additional cost or work. A recent study by experts modeled three adaptation methods — changing WHAT, changing WHEN and changing both of them. The chart below shows their impact on the output of corn, rice, sorghum, soybean (大豆) and wheat. These three adaptation methods can already go some way to relieve climate pressures in some countries. But, of course, we don’t only care about crop production at the global level. If farmers in particular regions — especially those that are most food-insecure cannot adapt to climate change this is still a major problem. So there is more we can do in the future. 1. What should farmers change if they are short of money and labour? A. WHAT. B. WHERE. C. HOW. D. WHEN. 2. Which crop may benefit most if farmers plant improved varieties? A. Rice. B. Corn. C. Sorghum. D. Wheat. 3. What should be done in the future? A. To adopt the three methods. B. To help the farmers in need. C. To focus on crop production. D. To move to colder regions. B I used to believe that only words could catch the essence of the human soul. The literary works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world. Words were what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those questions themselves. Words were everything. That belief changed. In an ordinary math class, my teacher posed a simple question: What’s 0.99 rounded to the nearest whole number? Easy. When rounded to the nearest whole number, 0.99=1. Somehow, I thought even though 0.99 is only 0.01 away from 1, there’s still a 0.01 difference. That means even if two things are only a little different, they are still different, so doesn’t that make them completely different? My teacher answered my question by presenting another equation (等式):1=0.9, which could also be expressed as 1=0.999999… repeating itself without ever ending. There was something foreign but fascinating about the equation. The left side was unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless, a number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things were connected by an equal sign. Lying in bed, I thought about how much the equation paralleled our existence. The left side of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The concrete, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full of limitless possibilities, and endless opportunities into the open future. So that’s what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an equation with two sides that balances itself out. Still, we can’t ever truly seem to put the perfect words to it. So possibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as words can. For now, let’s leave it at that:1=0.999999… and live a life like it. 4. What does the author emphasize about words in paragraph 1? A. Their wide variety. B. Their literary origins. C. Their distinct sounds. D. Their expressive power. 5. What made the author find the equation fascinating? A The repetition of a number. B. The way two different numbers are equal. C. The question the teacher raised. D. The difference between the two numbers. 6. What does the author think of “1=0.9”? A. They reveal the meaning of life. B. They are reliable in expressing ideas. C. They are useful in learning maths. D. They give limited possibilities. 7. What is the text mainly about? A. Why the equation exists everywhere? B. Which equation is important for people? C. How numbers can express ideas like words? D. When numbers can easily make up equations? C Second place is just the first loser. While the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it doesn’t always lead to human flourishing and can create misery. Fortunately, there is a formula to solve this problem: instead of always going for gold, shoot for the bronze. Though second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner regarding happiness and longevity. In a 1995 study, scholars systematically coded the emotional reactions of silver and bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. Using slow-motion footage captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium (领奖台), researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. Over 80% of bronze medalists exhibited genuine smiles, a figure that was nearly double that observed among silver medalists. Moreover, every bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than the average smile observed among the silver medalists. More recent research has looked at the life span of all three medalist categories. A 2018 study found that the athlete whose best performance was silver lived to 72. Gold medalists beat this by four years, living to 76. But first prize in longevity went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78. The study had a handy explanation for this discrepancy: “Unsatisfactory competition outcomes may adversely affect health.” In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists, whereas the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory shows the difference between upward and downward social comparison. The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish. It tends to lower the intrinsic motivation, and thus enjoyment that people obtain from their activities. The principle at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you. 8. What can be learned from the 1995 study? A. Bronze winners appeared happier than silver medalists. B. Silver medalists smiled as frequently as bronze medalists. C. Bronze medalists’ smile lasted longer than every silver medalist’s. D. Both medalists’ emotions were unchanged from the events to the podium. 9. What is the cause of the difference in medalists’ life span? A. The stress from downward social comparison. B. The motivation from upward social comparison. C. The effect of different types of social comparison. D. The failure to look up to the top after the competition. 10. What does the writer advise us to do to achieve happiness? A. Learn from the top performers. B. Strengthen our achievement motivation. C. Try to be the best in every field. D. Commit to our consistent personal growth. 11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A The Triumph of Coming in Third B. The Problem of Human Competition C. The Mechanism of Social Comparison D. The Psychology of the Olympic Medalists D Doctor Dolittle, the well-known, fictional naturalist who famously possesses the ability to converse with animals and understand their languages has now inspired a high-paying science prize aimed at cracking the challenge of interspecies communication. A grand prize of $500,000, awaits whichever research team can make real progress: not just decoding the language of another species but using it to draw a reply from an animal. Last week, an initial $100,000 went to a US team studying dolphin whistles — after decades of recording bottlenose dolphins in Florida, they identified around 20 distinct messaging whistles. The Coller Dolittle Challenge financed by Jeremy Coller, a vegan and animal lover, is unashamedly modelled on the Turing test That 20th-century test promotes efforts to design a machine capable of imitating human conversation, and became a touchstone in the evolution of AI. It also became a focus for concerns about machines tricking, even taking over, humans. The ability to commune with other species is likely to raise similar, unsettling questions as research progresses. If we were able to decode animal chatter, should this knowledge change how we treat them, whether as pets, labour or food? The prize presents a moral challenge and it forces us to reconsider our relationships with other species. Philosopher Jonathan Birch, also a judge of the Jeremy Coller Centre, stressed that the Challenge is looking beyond the interspecies communication we have with pets, or that a farmer has with a sheepdog. Those relationships involve signalling and behavioural responses, Birch explains, “but that’s not telling us how animals communicate with each other... this prize is about understanding it so well that we can start to join the conversation.” While Coller hopes his charity will reshape our attitude to animals, the truth is that even groundbreaking research has largely failed to move the dial on their welfare. Recent work on cephalopod’s (头足类动物) intelligence has not stopped plans to farm the creatures. We might one day be able to understand what animals are saying — but there is no guarantee we will listen. 12. Why is Turing test mentioned in the passage? A. To stress its role and value in AI progress. B. To show its difference from the Challenge. C. To warn of concerns the Challenge may face. D. To show its use in interspecies communication. 13. Which research would Birch approve of to win the prize? A. People communicating with their pets. B. People directing sheepdogs during work. C Researchers recording how cattle communicate. D. Researchers interacting with birds using whistles. 14. What does the “move the dial” mean in the last paragraph? A. Make a change. B. Win the prize. C. Slow the process. D. Continue the research. 15. What’s the author’s attitude toward the practical effect of the research? A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Dismissive. Many adults are proud to share their fascinations with what others would label as kids’ toys. Mini Brands mystery packs or other blind boxes have become a phenomenon as collectibles for some adults. ____16____ For others, Legos are on their wishlist encouraged by the brand’s growing number of grown-up sets. ____17____ Seeking and sparking child-like joy may be part of the appeal, said behavioral therapist Maddy Ellberger. “When something reminds us of a positive memory, we are likely to engage with it because the association recalls those memories.” ____18____ Clothing brands are also cashing in on nostalgia (怀旧情怀) — from Crocs creating a Lizzie McGuire clog to Lululemon’s Disney collection making a full comeback that includes adults. Barbie isn’t just for kids clothes now either, thanks to the recent film and “Barbie-core” fashion trend. In addition to the trendy appeal, all these revivals can also touch on a feeling of connection during a time of increased division. But whether that desire for connection is satisfied depends on if you can translate the excitement into real, in-person connection. ____19____ But having or wearing the same thing is not the actual steps of forming shared identity,” Ellberger said. “And I feel like that’s some of what gets lost, and it isn’t impossible.” Ellberger has a great idea for this. “You are into a certain trend, like toys. There’s a good chance you’ll find others who are into the same trend. ____20____ If it was part of everyone’s secret Santa or white elephant — that’s a really cute way of connecting over this,” she said. A. The craze goes beyond toys. B. So, what’s with the fascination? C. It’s a great way to form community. D. Then give these toys to them as holiday gifts. E. Social media fuels the trend by creating shared experiences. F. Even stuffed animals are making their way into adults’ homes. G Childhood favorites have instead become relevant to adults again. Just ahead on the narrow road, the light from Kim’s torch (手电筒) flashed towards me. I’ve been around fora long time, and I’ve had my heart broken by many things. “Mom, please,” my son, Mark, said on the phone. “I need you to consider moving. Just come and get closer to us — the kids will love having you here.” Reluctantly (勉强地), I had to give in. At seventy years old, and although I felt absolutely fine and healthy, I didn’t know if living by myself, so far away from Mark, was a good idea. “Fine,” I said. “You can start looking for a house, and I’ll start sorting things out here.” When William passed away, a part of me did, too. I appreciated that I might lose something. The world was suddenly less energetic, and the days seemed longer. I spent evenings in the kitchen, making fresh cookies — more than I could eat, prompting me to send them over to my neighbors. We were all extremely close, and William and I often threw parties in our backyard. The truth was that William and I had been quite popular in Virginia. Our barbecue restaurant was a beacon (灯塔) for all enthusiasts from across the state. We also had a range of spices which sold well in supermarkets. William always tested our new products on our neighbors during our dinners. “Mom, I found the perfect house,” Mark said. “I’ve viewed it, and I think you’ll love it.” The next thing I knew, I was packing up my life and heading to California for a new adventure. A few weeks into my new community, California presented a challenge I had not anticipated. I knew I didn’t fit into the neighborhood. While those families were incredibly friendly to each other, they seemed to cast me aside. My attempts at conversation were often met with cold shoulders. I watched everyone glance at my house from the sidewalk. Desperate and alone, I missed everything in Virginia. I thought moving here would get rid of my loneliness, but this was just loneliness in a different guise (形式). “Maybe I need to do something,” I whispered. The next day, Mark came to see me, and I talked to him about it. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Neighbors arrived, drawn by the promise of a meal. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 芷兰2025年下学期高二第二次月考 英 语 试 题 时量:120分钟 满分:150分 祝考试顺利! 1 What will Maria do tonight? A. The repetition of a number. D 5. B 6. A 7. 根据第一段中“The literary works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world. Words were what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those questions themselves. 根据第五段中“There was something foreign but fascinating about the equation. The left side was unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless, a number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things were connected by an equal sign.(这个等式有点奇怪,但很吸引人。 根据第六段“Lying in bed, I thought about how much the equation paralleled our existence. The left side of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The concrete, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full of limitless possibilities, and endless opportunities into the open future.(躺在床上,我思考着这个等式与我们的存在是多么相似。 故选A。 通读全文,尤其是文章开头“I used to believe that only words could catch the essence of the human soul.(我曾经相信,只有语言才能捕捉到人类灵魂的本质。)” C。 C Second place is just the first loser. A. The Triumph of Coming in Third B. The Problem of Human Competition C. The Mechanism of Social Comparison D. The Psychology of the Olympic Medalists 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. 根据第2段中“Using slow-motion footage captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium, researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists.(通过使用在比赛结束后和随后在领奖台上捕捉到的慢镜头,研究人员发现,平均而言,铜牌得主表现得一直比银牌得主更快乐。)” 故选A。 根据第4段中“The study had a handy explanation for this discrepancy: ‘Unsatisfactory competition outcomes may adversely affect health.’ In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists, whereas the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory shows the difference between upward and downward social comparison.(这项研究对这种差异有一个简单的解释:‘不满意的竞争结果可能会对健康产生负面影响’。 根据最后一段中“The principle at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you.(这里起作用的原则是努力提升你自己过去的成绩,而你必须与之比较的唯一对象就是你自己。)” 通读全文,尤其是根据第2段“researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists.(研究人员发现,平均而言,铜牌得主看起来总是比银牌得主更快乐。)”、第3段“But first prize in longevity went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78.(但在长寿这一项上拔得头筹的是铜牌得主,他们的寿命达到了78岁。)”以及最后一段“The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish.(那种每天都追求金牌的世俗幸福策略是不明智的。)” A。 D Doctor Dolittle, the well-known, fictional naturalist who famously possesses the ability to converse with animals and understand their languages has now inspired a high-paying science prize aimed at cracking the challenge of interspecies communication. C. Researchers recording how cattle communicate. D. Researchers interacting with birds using whistles. 14. What does the “move the dial” mean in the last paragraph? A. Make a change. B. Win the prize. C. Slow the process. D. Continue the research. 15. What’s the author’s attitude toward the practical effect of the research? A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Dismissive. C 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第二段中的“The Coller Dolittle Challenge financed by Jeremy Coller, a vegan and animal lover, is unashamedly modelled on the Turing test (图灵测试). That 20th-century test promotes efforts to design a machine capable of imitating human conversation, and became a touchstone in the evolution of AI. It also became a focus for concerns about machines tricking, even taking over, humans. The ability to commune with other species is likely to raise similar, unsettling questions as research progresses. 根据第三段“Philosopher Jonathan Birch, also a judge of the Jeremy Coller Centre, stressed that the Challenge is looking beyond the interspecies communication we have with pets, or that a farmer has with a sheepdog. Those relationships involve signalling and behavioural responses, Birch explains, “but that’s not telling us how animals communicate with each other... this prize is about understanding it so well that we can start to join the conversation.”(哲学家乔纳森·伯奇同时也是杰里米·科勒中心的评委,他强调,该挑战关注的跨物种交流,远不止我们与宠物之间、或是农民与牧羊犬之间的那种交流。 根据最后一段中的“While Coller hopes his charity will reshape our attitude to animals, the truth is that even groundbreaking research has largely failed to move the dial on their welfare. Recent work on cephalopod’s intelligence has not stopped plans to farm the creatures.(虽然科勒希望他的慈善项目能改变我们对动物的态度,但事实是,即使是突破性的研究,在很大程度上也未能move the dial动物的福利状况。 故选A项。 根据最后一段中的“While Coller hopes his charity will reshape our attitude to animals, the truth is that even groundbreaking research has largely failed to move the dial on their welfare. Recent work on cephalopod’s (头足类动物) intelligence has not stopped plans to farm the creatures. We might one day be able to understand what animals are saying — but there is no guarantee we will listen. C It’s a great way to form community. D. Then give these toys to them as holiday gifts. E. Social media fuels the trend by creating shared experiences. F. Even stuffed animals are making their way into adults’ homes. G. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Possible version: The next day, Mark came to see me, and I talked to him about it. I told him I would like to hold a barbecue party and bring the neighbors together for a meal. Understanding dawned in Mark’s eyes. He took me to the nearby supermarket, and we got everything we needed—including our spices. Over the next few days, with Mark and his family’s help, my backyard was transformed into a temporary barbecue restaurant. Then we sent out invitations door-to-door. As the first wisps of smoke rose into the air, carrying with them the mouthwatering scent of cooking meats, curiosity replaced the indifference I had grown accustomed to. Neighbors arrived, drawn by the promise of a meal. I greeted them as my guests arrived, their expressions a mix of surprise and excitement. As the day went on, my backyard filled with laughter. Mark, his wife and their children moved around our guests, serving, chatting, and breaking down the invisible barriers that had once seemed impossible to overcome. “It can only get better from here, Mum.” Mark smiled. Gradually, I found a sense of belonging in the new community, and the feeling of loneliness faded away. I discovered that as long as I opened my heart and bravely embraced new challenges, life would still be filled with hope and beauty. 词汇激活 行为类 ①告诉:told /said /informed /related ②送出:sent out /distributed /dispatched 情绪类 ①冷漠:indifference /apathy /coldness /unconcern ②孤独:loneliness /solitude /isolation /lonesomeness 【点睛】[高分句型1] As the first wisps of smoke rose into the air, carrying with them the mouthwatering scent of cooking meats, curiosity replaced the indifference I had grown accustomed to.
