The sun was low in the sky. The air was full of noise—not of insects, but of voices and cameras.
Roy’s heart beat fast. He looked out at the people gathering for the pancake house ground-breaking ceremony (奠基仪式). Behind him stood the company men and the reporters. And under his feet—hidden underground—were the tiny burrows of the owls. They asked nothing, made no sound, yet now heavy machines waited, ready to destroy their living area.
He thought of Mullet Fingers, the wild boy who cared about animals more than himself. He thought of brave Beatrice who helped even when it was hard. Roy had tried to keep away from trouble. He liked quiet. But now, staying quiet didn’t seem to be right.
“Excuse me,” he said, voice shaking. “Before you dig…you should know the truth.”
The crowd grew quiet.
“There are owls living here,” Roy said. “They’re small. They’re frightened. And if you build here, you’ll destroy their homes.”
Someone in the crowd laughed. A reporter asked, “How do you know that?”
“Because I saw them. I stood right there and watched them. They live here. And they matter.”
The manager stepped forward, “This is not your business, kid.”
Roy turned to face him. His fear turned into strength (力量).
“It’s my business. It’s everyone’s business. We can’t just destroy what we don’t see. Progress should not come at the cost of nature,” he said.
His hands stopped shaking. People in the crowd began whispering (低语). One mother held her child’s hand. A teacher nodded. Even the manager looked uncertain.
Roy didn’t know what would happen next. But he did what he could. He spoke the truth. Doing the right thing made him stronger.
Sometimes, doing what you can is enough to change the wind.

The human activity is changing the surface and the temperature of the planet. But new research (研究) shows it is also changing the sound of the earth’s oceans.
Scientists say the changes in the sounds of our oceans and other waters influence many animals—from very small fish to huge whales. Sound travels very far underwater. For fish, sound is probably a better way to sense the environment than light. Sounds help fish and other animals survive (生存). Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and keep safe. For many animals, they use sounds to communicate with each other. But they can’t communicate normally because of noises that humans make. Too many noises from humans are making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noises are coming from shipping traffic, fishing ships and other noisy human activities.
The Red Sea is one of the world’s most important shipping passages (通道). It is full of large ships traveling to Asia, Europe and Africa. Some fish and other animals now leave the noisiest area. Also, the number of ocean animals has gone down by about half since 1970. In some parts of the ocean, fewer animals sing and call than in the past, and those voices are almost gone.
When talking about threats (威胁) to the ocean, we often think about climate change and overfishing. But noise pollution is another problem we need to solve. If you want to do something for the ocean, think about how to make it quieter. Sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean threats. You can turn down or turn off sound.

【答案】例文:
My dear friends,
Water is very important to human beings. Nothing can live without water—we use it for drinking, washing, and farming, and industries depend on it, too.
However, we are facing serious water problems. Some factories pour waste water into rivers, lakes and the sea. Many people waste water by leaving taps running. What’s worse, people cut down too many trees. Rivers and lakes have become dry because of the lost forests.
Let’s do something to solve the problems. First, governments should pass laws against water pollution. We can also save water in our daily life, like turning off taps after use and reusing waste water. Besides, we should plant more trees to make the rivers and lakes full of water again.
Let’s try our best to save and protect water together!
Yours,
Li Ming

根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
26. What were heavy machines there for?

A. To protect the owls’ living area. B. To raise money for wildlife.
C. To advertise the pancake house. D. To welcome people from other towns.
29. What does the underlined sentence in the text mean?
A. Extra cost should be paid to protect nature.
B. There’s nothing more important than progress.
C. Nature shouldn’t be destroyed for development.
D. People should cut the cost of creating wonders.
30. What can we learn from Roy’s story in the text?
