B I still remember that busy autumn evening as I hurried with my eldest daughter, Athena to get to her classroom on time for parent-teacher night. We walked in and all eyes were on me. A few adults quickly quieted their kids’ whispers. A classmate yelled to my daughter, “What’s wrong with your mom’s face?” Shocked, I started to explain my condition but my 6-year-old daughter looked at him and said, “It’s my mom’s birthmark! Don’t be rude!” I was extremely proud of how she handled that situation. I was quite young when I realized I looked different because of my large facial birthmark. I always thought I would be alone because of it. Being compared to Batman’s evil Two-Face made me believe I could never find love, but I was lucky enough to meet my husband, who saw me for who I am inside. When I had my first daughter, I was overjoyed, but I began to worry if world would judge my children. I also worried I might pass my condition onto my children; I didn’t want them to grow up feeling judged. Unfortunately, my facial difference has impacted my children. My daughters can’t be invited to birthday parties or sleepovers, or I learn certain kids are no longer friends with mine after their parents saw me at school. When my kids were young, I explained how my special purple skin was rare, and we talked about acceptance and never judging others on how they look. When my girls kiss my purple-skinned cheek, I feel “normal” around them and their unconditional love. With time, both my daughters have become my strongest supporters. Thanks to them, I was no longer vulnerable and began to feel more self-confident as I try to be a good role model. Their worldviews are similar to mine: we see the world a little differently and with a kinder, more accepting heart. As the saying goes, your daughters will grow up to be your best friends. I know that will be the case for me! 4. What happened during the parent-teacher night? A. The author was ashamed because of Athena’s misbehavior. B. The author felt proud of Athena’s outstanding academic performance. C. Athena was praised by her teachers for her bravery and optimism. D. Athena defended the author against her classmate’s language attack. 5 How were the author’s daughters influenced by the author’s birthmark? A. They were set apart by other kids. B. They worried about being judged. C. They were hesitant to go to school. D. They shared the same physical condition. 6. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” most likely mean in paragraph 7? A. weak. B. impatient. C. considerate. D. ashamed 7. What is the author’s purpose in writing this article? A. To show how she built up her self-confidence. B. To highlight the significance of family education. C. To express her thankfulness for the support from her daughters. D. To complain about the injustice she experienced due to her birthmark. C “When people talk, listen completely.” Those words of Ernest Hemingway might be a pretty good guiding principle for many managers, as might the motto stated by Zeno of Citium, a Greek philosopher, “We have two ears and one mouth, so we should listen more than we say. For people like being listened to.” Some firms use a technique known as a “listening circle” in which participants are encouraged to talk openly and honestly about the issues they face (such as problems with colleagues). In such a circle, only one person can talk at a time and there is no interruption. A study mentioned in Harvard Business Review found that employees who had taken part in a listening circle suffered less social anxiety and had fewer worries about work-related matters than those who did not. Richard Mullender, a skilled negotiator (协商者) who set up a firm called the Listening Institute, defines listening as “the identification, selection and understanding of the key words that turn information into intelligence”. It is very important to all effective communication. Plenty of people think that good listening is about nodding your head or keeping eye contact. But that is not really listening, Mr. Mullender argues. A good listener is always looking for facts, emotions and indications of the speaker’s values. Another important point to bear in mind is that, when you talk, you are not listening. “Every time you share an opinion, you give out information about yourself,” Mr. Mullender says. In contrast, a good listener, by keeping quiet, gains an advantage over his or her partner. The mistake many people make is to ask too many questions, rather than letting the other person talk. The listeners’ focus should be on analysis. If you are trying to persuade someone to do something, you need to know what their beliefs are. If someone is upset, you need to assess (评估) their emotional state. Of course, a listener needs to speak occasionally. One approach is to make an assessment of what the other person is telling you and then check it with him or her. The central aim is to build up a relationship so the other person likes you and trusts you. 8. What is the value of attending a “listening circle”? A. Listening can relieve stress B. Managers give comfort to their colleagues. C. Employees may become more honest. D. Managers can solve work-related matters. 9. According to Richard Mullender, what is the key to being a good listener? A. Talking with speakers. B. Giving out your information. C. Focusing on analysing of the speaker. D. Keeping eye contact. 10. Which of the following can best describe an effective listener? A. Generous and humorous. B. Observant and trustworthy. C. Talkative and positive. D. Well-informed and honest. 11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear? A. Sports and Entertainment. B. Health and Medicine. C. Education and Career. D. Communication and Relationship. D Scientists at University College London have discovered that sets of regulatory genes (调节基因) are responsible for maintaining healthy hearing. The finding, made in fruit flies, could lead to treatments for age-related hearing loss (ARHL) in humans. Generally, one-third of people aged over 65 experience hearing damage, and while there are thought to be more than 150 genes that may affect hearing loss, there is no agreed view on how to use these to develop hearing loss treatments. In the study, published in Scientific Reports, researchers at the UCL Ear Institute studied the hearing ability of the common fruit fly across its life span (around 70 days) to see if their hearing become bad with age. A fruit fly’s ears share many molecular (分子的) similarities with the ears of humans, making it an ideal tool for the study of human hearing loss. Researchers found that the antennal (触角的) ears of fruit flies also display ARHL with nearly all sensitive hearing measures starting to fail after 50 days of age. This made the researchers want to know if there were any “age-variable” genes in the flies’ inner ears which have kept the ears healthy for 50 days of their lives. After closer examination, researchers identified a new set of regulatory genes — homeostasis genes. These genes are often responsible for picking up sound and the overall sensitivity of the ear. Using this information, scientists were then able to genetically modify (调整) the genes and prevent the flies from getting ARHL. Professor Joerg Albert, lead author of the study, said, “While many studies have been conducted into the hearing function of fruit flies, ours is the first to look at the molecular detail of their hearing life course.” “The fact that these genes are preserved in humans will also help to focus future clinical research in humans and thus speed up the discovery of new pharmacological (药理学的) or gene-therapeutic strategies.” 12. What did scientists at UCL discover? A. One-third of people aged over 65 have hearing problems. B. There are regulatory genes that are related to aging. C. ARHL in humans cannot be treated at present. D. There is a link between regulatory genes and healthy hearing. 13. Why were fruit flies used in the research? A. Their hearing system is similar to that of humans’. B. Their hearing ability also declines with age. C. They display ARHL during their lifespan. D. They share many genes with humans. 14. What is the main purpose of the last two paragraphs? A. The discovery of new treatments. B. The significance of the study. C. The result of the study. D. The future uses to earn money 15. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. Age-related hearing loss: fruit flies and humans. B. Hearing loss: a common problem for older adults. C. Gene discovery could lead to hearing loss treatments. D. The body’s ability can be unlocked to treat lost hearing. E The average single-use plastic bag gets used for about 12 minutes. Every second the world uses 160,000 plastic bags — that is a total of over five trillion per year. Up to 99 percent of these plastic bags are not recycled and they hang around for at least 1,000 years and pollute the earth. Yet, plastic bags are hardly a necessity in our lives. We have to make changes to create a more sustainable lifestyle. At the beginning of 2021, Shanghai put in effect a ban on all plastic bags in shopping malls and supermarkets, as well as a ban on non-degradable (不可降解的) plastics in many other areas. Over the years, individuals and companies have worked to replace plastic items, such as cups and straws, with paper ones. However, customers complain that paper straws often become soft and break before they can finish their hot drinks. Experts have repeatedly stressed replacing plastic with degradable materials is not the final solution, and that our consumption habits need a bigger change. In college, one of my environmental science professors demonstrated a type of waste-free living. She carried around a small glass jar (罐子) with her, and in it was all her trash she collected for the entire year. The jar contained a plastic candy bar wrapper (her reward for passing the half-year mark) and a broken pen. That was it. She brought her cup to Starbucks, her bags to shops, and never bought anything wrapped in plastic. Her food waste became compost (堆肥). Though she probably missed out on some attractive foods like bubble tea and potato chips, she clearly demonstrated our ability to live a healthy life without creating much plastic waste. Plastic bags are easy to forget about when they become increasingly common. Unluckily, plastic bags break down into microplastics which then get mixed into the air, soil and water, and eventually end up in plants, animals and human bodies. Some small part of the five trillion plastic bags to be consumed this year will sooner or later become part of the food you eat, the water you drink, and then get stuck somewhere inside your body. So what are you going to do about them? 16. Why does the author use many numbers in the first paragraph? A. To tell readers the exact numbers of plastic bags. B. To show the importance of plastic bags in daily life. C To warn readers of possible problems from plastic bags. D. To remind readers of the popularity of plastic bags. 17 What is the main idea of the third paragraph? A. The science professor liked to demonstrate her way of living. B. The science professor often carried around a glass jar with some trash in it. C. People should take along their cups and bags when they do shopping. D. People could live healthily without creating much plastic waste. 18. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Human bodies are made up of microplastics. B. It is impossible for people to abandon plastic bags. C. Plants, animals and humans can get harmed by plastic bags after they break down. D Plastic bags are used frequently because they are increasingly common. 19. What is the author’s attitude towards plastic bags? A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Unconcerned. D. Indifferent. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中两项为多余选项。 Creativity helps us view the world in new and different ways.
