When 15-year-old Alex was in middle school, he saw his best friend, Lily, struggling with a rather serious learning disability (障碍). Lily had great trouble in reading and understanding difficult texts, which affected her studies and made her lose self-confidence. Determined to support her, Alex decided to find a solution.
One day, while carelessly reading Reader’s Digest, Alex chanced upon an article about the shocking power of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Deeply encouraged by the article, he made up his mind to create an AI-based learning tool that could really help students like Lily. Alex spent months learning programming languages and algorithms (算法). He faced many tough challenges along the way, such as checking and reorganizing codes (代码), which mean programming instructions, and searching for related data, which mean information having something to do with developing such an app. However, he never thought of giving up. Finally, he developed an app called “ReadEase”, which uses AI to study texts and provide simplified explanations and clear audio-readings. It can also track the user’s progress and offer personalized learning plans.
When Alex introduced “ReadEase” to Lily, she was doubtful at first. “But to my surprise, after using it for a few weeks, I noticed a great improvement in my reading skills. I can finally understand what I’m reading,” Lily said excitedly.
The success of “ReadEase” didn’t stop there. Alex shared his invention with his school’s teachers, who were deeply impressed by its huge ability. They started using the app in their classes to help students with learning difficulties. Now, Alex is working on improving “ReadEase” and hopes to make it available to more students around the world. “I want to use technology to make a positive effect on people’s lives,” he said.
4. Why did Alex decide to create “ReadEase”?
A. To win a science competition. B. To help his close friend.
C. To finish a school project. D. To show his knowledge about AI.
5. What challenge did Alex meet while creating the app?
A. Being short of time and money.
B. Finding similar examples to follow.
C. Coding programming instructions properly.
D. Finding out suitable programming languages.
6. What can we infer from Lily’s words?
A. She is not used to the app. B. She still has difficulty reading.
C. The app is of great help to her. D. The app doesn’t work well.
7. Which of the following best describes Alex according to the text?
A. Creative and determined. B. Outgoing and careless.
C. Humorous and honest. D. Calm and responsible.

Ong uyan madongo? You probably don’t know how to answer this question — unless you happen to be one of the nearly 430 people in the world who speak a language called Matukar Panau. Then you would know it means “How are you?”
Matukar Panau is one of the world’s rarest languages. It is spoken in just two small coastal villages in Papua New Guinea. With so few speakers, the language is vanishing and endangered. It has so few speakers that its words soon may never be spoken or heard again. David Harrison, a language expert at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, together with his teammates, didn’t want that to happen to Matukar Panau. So they set out for Papua New Guinea. Their goal: use modern technology to help the remaining speakers preserve their native tongue.
They interviewed native speakers and to their surprise, the locals replied with excitement and said the language “is important for our identity (身份认同).” These villagers even knew the Internet existed. They also knew it was a powerful tool for learning and sharing information. So these people wanted to use the Internet to help them.
Together with the scientists, these villagers created a “talking dictionary”. This online resource provides translations between English and Matukar Panau and also includes the pronunciations, so users can listen to the correct pronunciation of each word.
That same year, electricity and the Internet reached those coastal villages. For many, a first stop on the Internet was the “talking dictionary” they had helped create. It now includes more than 4,000 words and 171 photos that help explain those words.
“The first time they saw the Internet, they could hear the voices of their elders and see them speaking their language,” Harrison said. The moment was powerful because it showed these villagers “their language is just as good as any other.”
8. What is the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To explain an idea.
C. To provide an example. D. To make comparisons.
9 What does the underlined word “vanishing” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Changing. B. Disappearing. C. Improving. D. Spreading.
10. What amazed the researchers when interviewing the villagers?
A. Their use of the Internet. B. Their protection of the coast.
C. Their need to share information. D. Their wish to protect the language.
11. How does the “talking dictionary” work?
A. It teaches villagers how to get online.
B. It helps natives master other languages.
C. It turns written words into spoken ones.
D. It records words and related information.
D
Florida has some of the best beaches in the world. Thousands of people visit the state to enjoy the sun and the sand. But these beaches are also home to sea turtles. Female sea turtles come from the ocean and onto these beaches at night. They dig a hole, lay many eggs, and cover their eggs with sand. They use their fins (脚蹼) to crawl back across the beach and return to the ocean. However, the creatures have a hard time on beaches now.
Local volunteers and researchers in Florida take direct action to help the turtles. They look closely at the large area of sand to locate where the sea turtles laid their eggs. When they’ve figured out where the eggs were laid, they mark the beach off so that no one can enter the area and disturb the eggs. They also collect information about the nests and tracks to help scientists study sea turtles.
Another problem for sea turtles is the quick urbanization (城市化) near beaches. Bright lights on buildings near the beach can negatively impact sea turtles. Baby sea turtles usually hatch (出壳) on the sandy beach and head to the ocean. When there is bright light coming from the other side of the shore far from the ocean, the baby turtles get confused. They do not know which way to go. Many of them do not make it to the ocean and die. Now, residents who live close to a beach try to turn off their lights at night as early as possible.
Many people believe the best way to save these creatures is through organizations like the Marine Conservancy. The Marine Conservancy helps people take steps that will help reduce the threats that put sea turtles in danger. Sometimes, turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish (水母). They eat this trash and die. Florida residents (居民) can volunteer for beach clean-ups and make sure to pick up their own litter. However, sea turtles are still starving because of overfishing and climate change. In 2025, the organization aims to help the creatures find a new source of food by planting seagrass underwater.
12. How did volunteers help sea turtles?
A. By increasing the size of beaches.
B. By tracking sea turtles’ movements.
C. By taking sea turtles’ eggs to the lab.
D. By limiting human entry to certain beaches.
13. Why is light pollution harmful to sea turtles in Florida?
A. It may delay their normal growth.
B It may harm their ability to reproduce.
C. It may disturb their hunting activities.
D. It may make them lose their sense of direction.
14 What will be the theme of the Marine Conservancy in 2025?
A. Feeding sea turtles. B. Cleaning up water pollution.
C. Fighting against overfishing. D. Providing more habitats for sea turtles.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why Sea Turtles in Florida Face Survival Threats
B. How Residents Help Protect Sea Turtles in Florida
C. A Protection Organization Works to Improve Local Beaches
D. Florida Tries to Keep a Balance between Urbanization and Protection

I’ve never been a self-confident boy. In class, even when I knew the answer perfectly, I would lower my head, afraid to catch the teacher’s eye. Group discussions were a living nightmare (噩梦), as I was convinced that my ideas were never good enough. This lack of confidence had deeply affected my life in various aspects.
One day, my English teacher, Mr. Smith, announced a school-wide English speech contest. Everyone was encouraged to take part. I was filled with fear at the thought of standing on stage in front of so many people. But Mr. Smith, with his sharp eye, seemed to have noticed my hesitation. He came to me after class and said sincerely, “Tom, I think you have great potential. This could be a chance for you to shine.” His words gently planted a small seed of hope in my heart.
I decided to give it a try. I spent days writing my speech, carefully choosing every single word. Then came the practice. When I stood in front of the mirror, my hands would shake. But I didn’t give up. I practiced day and night, each time a little more bravely.
Finally, the day of the contest arrived. As I stepped onto the stage, my heart was pounding so hard that I could hear it in my ears. The audience seemed like a vast ocean of eyes, all staring at me. For a moment, I froze, my mind going blank. But then, I remembered Mr. Smith's words and all the hard work I had put in. I took a deep breath and began to speak.
At first, my voice was soft, but as I gradually got into the rhythm (节奏) of my speech, it grew stronger and more confident. I poured my heart and soul into every sentence, sharing my story sincerely. When I finished, there was a moment of silence, and then thunderous applause (雷鸣般的掌声) filled the hall. I had done it!

A Cloud Lecture on Natural Disasters
Last Friday, our school invited British expert George to deliver an insightful cloud lecture on natural disasters, with the aim of raising students’ awareness of disaster prevention and enhancing their scientific literacy.
The lecture, which lasted for 90 minutes, covered topics such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and climate change. George used vivid videos and real-life cases to explain how these disasters form and how we can respond effectively. Students actively participated in the Q&A session, where they discussed sustainable solutions to mitigate environmental risks.
The event was highly praised. Many said it deepened their understanding of global challenges, while teachers emphasized its educational value. This innovative approach to learning has set a benchmark for future activities.

【47题答案】
【答案】
The host finally announced, “The first-prize winner is Tom!” I stood rooted to the spot, disbelief and joy washing over me. The words echoed in my ears as if in a dream. My classmates’ cheers blended with the judges’ nods of approval, and I felt a rush of warmth prickling my eyes. Glancing at Mr. Smith, I saw him beaming, his eyes bright with pride. This wasn’t just a win — it was proof that my endless hours of practice and newfound courage had paid off. The fear that once haunted me melted away, replaced by a sense of accomplishment I’d never known.
I walked up to the stage on shaky legs to receive my award. As I grasped the trophy, its weight grounded me in reality. “Thank you,” I managed, my voice steady despite the trembling. Turning to face the audience, I spoke from the heart: “Once, I was too afraid to speak up.
