For a number of people, visiting the dentist for regular check-ups is totally common. However, for countless individuals across the globe — particularly those living in impoverished (贫困的) areas — getting dental care and having their teeth examined simply isn’t possible. Felipe Rossi, a dentist from Brazil, has devoted himself to helping turn this situation around.
Growing up in the USA, Felipe Rossi had just obtained the Bachelor of Medicine Degree and was about to start a master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry (儿童口腔学) when a journey to his father’s home — Balsabo in Brazil — changed his initial plan. “All locals didn’t have access to dental care, and consequently, many of them had misshapen teeth or even lost some teeth, leading to many people not daring to laugh with mouth open.” Felipe Rossi recalled. “A desire was planted in my heart. That is, to use my skills to bring healthy smiles to people suffering from dental problems.”
With the support of his parents, Felipe formed an NGO (non-government organization) called Porsorriso to give free oral treatments to individuals with low incomes who require cleaning, fillings, crowns, restoration work and more. His team consists of approximately 30 registered volunteers who go with him to poor towns and villages in Brazil.
Sponsorship is generally provided by two private companies. Individuals may also make donations through the ‘Smile Solidarity’ program, where they can choose monthly amounts to contribute. Porsorriso also holds regular fundraisers to afford the cost of providing free dental services around the country.
As noble as its objective is, Felipe admits that Porsorriso is “struggling to survive” because of the huge cost of providing dental work and the constant fundraising events they have to hold to keep the NGO in normal functioning. “Challenging as it is, it did bring healthy teeth as well as renewed confidence to the locals. We will continue this transformative act whatever difficulties we will face”. Felipe said with a strong will.
4. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By posing a contrast. B. By reporting an event.
C By assuming a situation. D. By making an appeal.
5. What inspired Felipe to offer dental treatments to Brazilians?
A. His parents’ encouragement. B. His enthusiasm for dentistry.
C. His academic training in the USA. D. His experience in Brazil.
6. What do we know about Porsorriso?
A. It gives free oral treatments to anyone in need.
B. It is cooperated by Felipe Rossi and the local authority.
C. It is financially supported by corporations and individuals.
D. It holds regular fundraising to educate people about dental care.
7. Which of the following can best describe Felipe Rossi?
A. ambitious and faithful. B. creative and intelligent.
C. energetic and strong-willed. D. determined and kind-hearted.

Larry and I have always had our basic values in common, but our interests are as far apart as opera and basketball. I love art, and he is a huge sports fan. His big passion is seeing basketball games. He has been sharing season tickets with his friends for years. I must admit I’ve been always invited to see the games together.
This morning, I called my brother, Larry, and said, “I have a piece of good news and a piece of bad news. Which do you want to hear first?” “Good news first,” Larry answered. “You can go to sleep early tonight,” I said. “Okay. What’s the bad one?” he asked. “We’re going to the opera!” I answered, laughing loudly.
There was a reason for the joke. Last time I invited him to go to the opera, he fell asleep in the theater. I had to admit it was always boring for him, but when I gave him a ticket for my favorite opera, I really thought he might enjoy it. I woke him up, but soon he fell asleep again. When Larry found I was joking, he breathed a sigh of relief on the other end. He said, “But I want you to go to see the last basketball game this autumn with me.” I promised and complained, “Not again!” Actually, most of the time, when the game was on, I’d be texting or daydreaming. Sometimes, my telephone messages would be interrupted when the home team scored. I knew they scored because everyone jumped up and exchanged high-fives and fist bumps.
However, today, as I looked around at thousands of people cheering and getting increasingly excited, I decided to at least give it a try—for my brother’s sake, if not for my own. The game was in-tense, and I was hooked soon. When the other team scored, I eventually felt a bit disappointed with the rest of my crowd. My brother was surprised to see me getting involved. I was astonished myself! I didn’t keep glancing at the clock, counting the minutes until we got out. Time flew. The game was over before I knew it.
8. In paragraph 2, the author quotes his conversation with Larry to show ________.
A. Their common basic values. B. Their strong sense of humour.
C. The high trust between them. D. The difference in their interests.
9 What does the underlined word “hooked” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Absorbed. B. Satisfied. C. Disturbed. D. Astonished.
10. What can be learned about Larry from the passage?
A He likes playing jokes on the author. B. He often texts while watching the opera.
C. He seldom enjoyed the opera last time. D. He scored in the last basketball game.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Art and Sport B. From Opera to Basketball
C. Falling asleep in the theater D. Developing a Passion for Basketball
D
As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)”
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
12. The passage begins with two questions to ________.
A. introduce the main topic B. show the author’s attitude
C. describe how to use the Internet D. explain how to store information
13. What can we learn about the first experiment?
A. Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.
B. The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C. The first group did not try to remember the information.
D. The second group did not understand the information.
14. In transactive memory, people ________.
A. keep the information in mind
B. change the quantity of information
C. organize information like a computer
D. remember how to find the information
15. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research?
A. We are using memory differently.
B. We are becoming more intelligent.
C. We have poorer memories than before.
D. We need a better way to access information.

A study by US psychology researcher Matthew Keller and his colleagues showed that beneficial effects of warm and sunny conditions on mood were only seen in people who had spent more than 30 minutes outdoors that day. One evening in my third year of university my mom called Avadhoot and told him that I’d been really quiet lately, always staying in my room all day, and asked if he could talk to me. Avadhoot agreed right away. We’d been best friends since primary school, and even though we went to different universities, we made it a point to keep in touch regularly.
That weekend, Avadhoot took the earliest train to my hometown, and we met at our favorite café — the one we’d visited every Saturday after school since we were 15. “Hey,” he said, sliding into the seat opposite and tapping my hand gently. “Your mom said you’ve been down. Do you want to talk? I’ve got all afternoon to listen.” I bit my lip, and my eyes were heavy with worry. Then I said, “It’s my term paper on science. I have been working on it for weeks, but every time I read it, it feels awful. I keep thinking I’m not good enough. I’m scared that I’ll let my professor down.” I added softly, “I didn’t want to say anything to you at first because I was scared of taking up your time with your lab stuff. You’ve already got enough on your plate.”
Avadhoot went quiet for a second, and then leaned forward, his tone soft but firm. “You know, for the past three weeks, every time I texted to ask how you were, you’d just say ‘busy with the paper’ and change the subject. It turns out that you were just trying not to bother (麻烦) me?” He shook his head. “Don’t you remember? Friends are supposed to bother each other.”
I looked at him, tears just pooling in the corners of my eyes. “I…I just didn’t want to add more to your troubles,” I said.
“Your feelings aren’t ‘a trouble’ — they’re really important,” he said gently. “Tell me more about the paper. What part feels hardest?” I pulled out my laptop and showed him my work. For the next few hours, he listened carefully, asked questions about my ideas, and even suggested adding a story about the small solar project we’d done together in high school.

9. What does the underlined word “hooked” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Absorbed. B. Satisfied. C. Disturbed. D. Astonished.
10. What can be learned about Larry from the passage?
A. He likes playing jokes on the author.
D 9. A 10. C 11. B

由文章第一段中“Larry and I have always had our basic values in common, but our interests are as far apart as opera and basketball. I love art, and he is a huge sports fan. His big passion is seeing basketball games. (拉里和我的基本价值观一直是一致的,但我们的兴趣就像歌剧和篮球一样相去甚远。我热爱艺术,而他是一个狂热的体育迷。他最大的爱好是看篮球比赛。多年来,他一直与朋友分享季票。我必须承认我总是被邀请一起去看比赛)”、第二段“This morning, I called my brother, Larry, and said, “I have a piece of good news and a piece of bad news. Which do you want to hear first?” “Good news first,” Larry answered. “You can go to sleep early tonight,” I said. “Okay. What’s the bad one?” he asked. “We’re going to the opera!” I answered, laughing loudly. (今天早上,我打电话给我哥哥拉里,说:“我有一个好消息和一个坏消息。你想先听哪个?“先说好消息,”拉里回答。“今晚你可以早点睡觉,”我说。“好吧。哪个是坏的?他问。“我们要去看歌剧!”我大声笑着回答。)”可知,作者在第二段引用他与拉里的对话是为了呈现他们兴趣的差异。故选D。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据最后一段中“However, today, as I looked around at thousands of people cheering and getting increasingly excited, I was determined to at least give it a try—for my brother’s sake, if not for my own. (然而,今天,当我看到周围成千上万的人在欢呼,越来越兴奋时,我决定至少试一试——如果不是为了我自己,也是为了我哥哥。)”以及“My brother was surprised to see me getting involved. I was astonished myself! (我哥哥看到我参与进来很惊讶。我自己也惊呆了!)”由此可知,游戏很激烈作者很快就被迷住了。故可猜测划线单词hooked为“迷住”的意思。A. 故选A。
根据第三段中“I had to admit it was always boring for him, but when I gave him a ticket for my favorite opera, I really thought he might enjoy it. I woke him up, but soon he fell asleep again. (我不得不承认,这对他来说总是很无聊,但当我给他一张我最喜欢的歌剧的票时,我真的认为他会喜欢它。我叫醒了他,但他很快又睡着了。)”可知,上次拉里几乎没有欣赏歌剧。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。本文讲述了作者从喜欢戏剧到喜欢篮球的经历。文章第一段讲到“Larry and I have always had our basic values in common, but our interests are as far apart as opera and basketball. I love art, and he is a huge sports fan. His big passion is seeing basketball games. (拉里和我的基本价值观一直是一致的,但我们的兴趣就像歌剧和篮球一样相去甚远。我热爱艺术,而他是一个狂热的体育迷。他最大的爱好是看篮球比赛。多年来,他一直与朋友分享季票。我必须承认我总是被邀请一起去看比赛)”以及文章最后一段讲到“The game was intense, and I was hooked soon. (比赛很激烈,我很快就迷上了。)”陈述了作者的转变,由此可知文章的最佳标题是:从歌剧到篮球。故选B。

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments.
A keep the information in mind
B. change the quantity of information
C. organize information like a computer
D. remember how to find the information
15. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research?
A. We are using memory differently.
B. We are becoming more intelligent.
C. We have poorer memories than before.
D. We need a better way to access information.
A 13. C 14. D 15. A

Of the many aspects of weather, sunshine is the most closely tied to mood. Although the link is weaker than many people imagine, sunlight has repeatedly been found to increase positive moods and reduce tiredness.____17____. One study even found that diners in Minnesota, US, tipped more generously on sunny days.
____18____. A study showed that university admissions officers stressed the academic qualifications of applicants more on cloudy days, and their non-academic qualities more on sunny ones.
____19____. The more it departs (偏离) from an ideal of around 20C, the more discomfort we feel. One study found that rates of helping others decreased as temperatures dropped below or rose above this value.
Indeed, the effects of weather on mood depend on our behavior and on how we think. ___20___. A study by US psychology researcher Matthew Keller and his colleagues showed that beneficial effects of warm and sunny conditions on mood were only seen in people who had spent more than 30 minutes outdoors that day. Good weather even had negative effects on mood for people confined (限制) indoors, who perhaps looked enviously (嫉妒地) outside at the solar fun they were missing.

根据上文“The weather supplies many metaphors (隐喻) for our changeable minds. Moods can brighten and darken, futures can be under a cloud, and relationships can be stormy.(天气为我们多变的思想提供了许多隐喻。情绪有明有暗,未来可能阴云密布,人际关系也可能风雨飘摇)”举了一些使用描写天气的表达来描述我们情感的例子,C选项“天气为描述我们的情感氛围提供了生动的语言”可概括这一内容,且C选项的主语Weather可与后半句的it构成指代关系,提问天气是否会影响我们的心情,引出下文。故选C。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Of the many aspects of weather, sunshine is the most closely tied to mood. Although the link is weaker than many people imagine, sunlight has repeatedly been found to increase positive moods and reduce tiredness.(在天气的诸多方面中,阳光与心情的关系最为密切。尽管这种联系比许多人想象的要弱,但人们一再发现阳光能增加积极情绪,减少疲劳)”提出阳光会让人们心情更好的发现,后文“Happy people tend to be more favorable toward one another, and people are more helpful when the sun is shining. One study even found that diners in Minnesota, US, tipped more generously on sunny days.(快乐的人往往更喜欢彼此,当阳光灿烂的时候,人们更乐于助人。
根据后文“The more it departs (偏离) from an ideal of around 20C, the more discomfort we feel. One study found that rates of helping others decreased as temperatures dropped below or rose above this value.(温度离理想的20摄氏度越远,我们就越感到不舒服。一项研究发现,当气温低于或高于这个数值时,帮助他人的比率就会下降)”本段主要在讲气温对我们的影响,D选项“温度也会影响我们的思想和行为”能够概括本段大意,且D选项主语Temperature可与后句的it构成指代关系,故选D。
【20题详解】
根据后文“A study by US psychology researcher Matthew Keller and his colleagues showed that beneficial effects of warm and sunny conditions on mood were only seen in people who had spent more than 30 minutes outdoors that day. Good weather even had negative effects on mood for people confined (限制) indoors, who perhaps looked enviously (嫉妒地) outside at the solar fun they were missing.(美国心理学研究员马修·凯勒和他的同事进行的一项研究表明,温暖和阳光的环境对情绪的有益影响只出现在那些当天在户外待了30分钟以上的人身上。

the importance of意为“……

Dear Editor,
I’m writing to express my support for the new school rule that bans cellphones, tablets, MP3 and digital devices with internet and entertainment functions on campus.
Firstly, such devices often distract students from their studies, leading to a decline in academic performance. Secondly, excessive use can harm students’ eyesight and physical health. Moreover, without these devices, students are more likely to engage in face-to-face communication, fostering better relationships.
In short, the rule is beneficial to our study and life. I hope it can be carried out smoothly to create a better campus atmosphere.

One evening in my third year of university, my mom called Avadhoot and told him that I’d been really quiet lately, always staying in my room all day, and asked if he could talk to me.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
When we finished, my eyes shone again.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A week later, Avadhoot called to ask about the term paper.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When we finished, my eyes shone again. “This is just what I need!” I said, saving the paper quickly. “Adding that solar project story makes it more interesting.” We picked up our bags and walked out of the café. “Let me walk you to the station,” I said. We chatted lightly about our old school days on the way, laughing as we remembered how we’d stayed after class to fix the solar project’s broken wire.
A week later, Avadhoot called to ask about the term paper. “I sent it yesterday!” I said excitedly. “My professor emailed me back, saying the solar project story made the paper feel real. Thank you, Avadhoot.” He laughed and said, “What are friends for?” That simple question stayed with me as I hung up, and I thought to myself that the café talk didn’t just fix my term paper — it made me understand when I’m stuck, the right person will show up, say “let’s figure this out together”, and make me feel like my troubles are worth sharing.
