I never thought basketball would change my life until Coach Wilson took over our struggling high school team. We were disorganized, lazy, and known more for our losses than our skills.
On his first day, Coach Wilson made us run until our legs burned, and when some players complained, he simply said, “Quit now, or commit to being better.” A few walked away, but the rest of us stayed — maybe because no one had ever expected much from us before. Our legs hurt, but we kept running. For the first time, someone saw we could be better — and that made us want to prove him right.
Coach Wilson didn’t just care about basketball. He made us clean up our language and even taught us how to shake hands properly. He never let our bad habits slide. Over time, we stopped being selfish players and started becoming real teammates — learning to respect each other, move together, and play as one.
One day, after a tiring practice, he gathered us around and told us a story: A man saw a butterfly struggling to break free from its cocoon (茧). Feeling sorry for it, he carefully cut the cocoon open. The butterfly came out easily — but its wings were weak, and it could never fly. The struggle was necessary to make it strong.
The lesson stuck. Slowly, we improved — not just as players, but as students, as teammates, and as people. We started winning games, but more importantly, we carried ourselves differently.
We finally made it to the championship game. However, in the fourth quarter, something unexpected happened: my knee took a hit. Pain shot up my leg as I hit the floor. Coach Wilson came to me, his face unreadable. “You’re done,” he said, signaling to the bench. “No.” The butterfly’s wings flashed in my mind. “Don’t ... don’t cut the cocoon open,” I said.
Coach Wilson nodded with a mix of heartache and pride in his eyes. I stepped back onto the court. I still felt a dull pain in my knee. Yet for the first time, I stood taller-as if something powerful was lifting me up.
4. How did the author feel on Coach Wilson’s first day?
A. Excited but nervous. B. Angry and disappointed.
C. Challenged but motivated. D. Bored and unimpressed.
5. How did Coach Wilson strengthen team unity?
A. By setting common goals. B. By sharing personal stories.
C. By organizing group activities. D. By correcting players’ manners.
6. What happened to the author at the championship game?
A. He led his team to victory. B. He showed his great talent.
C. He thanked his coach sincerely. D. He played on despite the injury.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. The early bird catches the worm. B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C. Smooth seas never made a skilled sailor. D. The chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
C 5. D 6. D 7. C

根据第二段中“On his first day, Coach Wilson made us run until our legs burned, and when some players complained, he simply said, “Quit now, or commit to being better.” A few walked away, but the rest of us stayed — maybe because no one had ever expected much from us before. Our legs hurt, but we kept running. For the first time, someone saw we could be better — and that made us want to prove him right.
根据第三段中的“Coach Wilson didn’t just care about basketball. He made us clean up our language and even taught us how to shake hands properly. He never let our bad habits slide. Over time, we stopped being selfish players and started becoming real teammates — learning to respect each other, move together, and play as one. (威尔逊教练不仅关心我们的球技,还在意我们的言行举止。他要求我们不说脏话,甚至教我们如何得体地握手。他从不容忍我们的坏习惯。久而久之,我们不再是只顾自己的球员,而是变成了真正的队友——学会了互相尊重、协同配合、团结作战。)”可知,教练通过纠正队员言行举止、约束坏习惯,让队员摒弃自私,学会团结协作,以此增强团队凝聚力。故选D项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“We finally made it to the championship game. (我们终于闯进了冠军赛。然而在第四节,我上篮落地时膝盖突然一阵剧痛,摔倒在地。威尔逊教练走到我身边,脸上看不出表情,随后就朝替补席做换人手势。“别换我。”蝴蝶破茧的画面在我脑海中闪过,我说道:“不要……不要剪开那个茧。”)”以及尾段中的“I still felt a dull pain in my knee. Yet for the first time, I stood taller-as if something powerful was lifting me up. (我的膝盖依然隐隐作痛。然而这一次,我站得更挺——仿佛有一股强大的力量在托举着我。)”可知,作者在冠军赛中膝盖受伤,但还是选择带伤继续比赛。故选D项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中的“One day, after a tiring practice, he gathered us around and told us a story: A man saw a butterfly struggling to break free from its cocoon (茧). Feeling sorry for it, he carefully cut the cocoon open. The butterfly came out easily — but its wings were weak, and it could never fly. The struggle was necessary to make it strong.( 一天,在一次疲惫的训练结束后,他把我们召集到一起,讲了一个故事:有个人看见一只蝴蝶正奋力从茧中挣脱出来。他心生怜悯,小心翼翼地把茧剪开。蝴蝶轻而易举地爬了出来——但它的翅膀却软弱无力,永远都无法飞翔了。原来,那段挣扎的过程是它变得强壮所必需的。)”以及全文中球队历经艰苦训练、最终蜕变成长的经历可知,文章核心是想传达“磨砺造就强者”的道理。选项C“平静的大海练不出熟练的水手”与文章主旨一致。故选C项。
C
Like humans, lots of wild animals like to spend time together and socialize. Lionesses (母狮子) will eat together after hunting, and elephants usually live in herds (群)of between eight and 100. However, according to a collection of recent studies, things are different when some animals get older.
One of these studies looked at house sparrows (家麻雀) on Lundy, a small island off the coast of Devon, England. The study focused on house sparrows because they can adjust their lifestyles successfully to suit different environments. The research revealed that older house sparrows have smaller social circles than younger ones.
Dr Jamie Dunning, who was involved in the research, said, “It could be because older birds don’t need to make friends for the same reasons that younger ones do. In their early years, these birds depend on regular interactions to discover reliable food sources and identify potential threats. These constant social activities serve as their guide through the complexities of youth. Older birds already know these things, so they don’t need to socialize as much. They can choose carefully who they spend time with, sticking with their close friends and saving their energy for more important things.”
Another study looked at a herd of red deer living on Rum, a Scottish island. As the females got older, they became less sociable. This wasn’t because they didn’t like the other deer, though. The research shows this behavior actually helps protect them from getting sick from a particular kind of worm. These worms are small creatures that live off other animals, sometimes making them ill. The deer are more likely to become weak as they get older, but they can reduce the risk of coming across the worm by spending less time with other deer.
The collection of studies covered lots of species, including monkeys and insects. Overall, it showed how aging animals changed their social behavior, which affected their social networks. In the future, scientists will examine how the observed patterns of social behavior changes in aging animals might relate to similar processes in people. The research may lead to new approaches to supporting elderly populations by understanding when reduced sociability represents normal adaptation and when intervention might be beneficial.
8. Why did researchers choose house sparrows as subjects?
A. They have a short life cycle. B. They have a stable population.
C. They show great adaptability. D. They live in a closed ecosystem.
9. What did Dr Jamie Dunning imply about house sparrows?
A. Their social circles keep expanding.
B. Their social competition declines with age.
C. Their social activities depend on the local environment.
D. Their social interaction frequency is determined by survival skills.
10. Why are older red deer less sociable?
A. To save energy. B. To secure food sources.
C. To prevent infectious diseases. D. To avoid conflicts with younger deer.
11. What will scientists focus on next?
A. Exploring human applications. B. Including diverse bird species.
C. Tracking animal aging processes. D. Protecting old animals.
C 9. D 10. C 11. A
根据第二段中“The study focused on house sparrows because they can adjust their lifestyles successfully to suit different environments. (这项研究以家麻雀为研究对象,因为它们能够成功地调整自己的生活方式以适应不同的环境。)”可知,研究人员选择家麻雀作为研究对象是因为它们具有很强的适应性。故选C项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“It could be because older birds don’t need to make friends for the same reasons that younger ones do. In their early years, these birds depend on regular interactions to discover reliable food sources and identify potential threats. These constant social activities serve as their guide through the complexities of youth. Older birds already know these things, so they don’t need to socialize as much. They can choose carefully who they spend time with, sticking with their close friends and saving their energy for more important things.
根据第四段中“The research shows this behavior actually helps protect them from getting sick from a particular kind of worm. These worms are small creatures that live off other animals, sometimes making them ill. The deer are more likely to become weak as they get older, but they can reduce the risk of coming across the worm by spending less time with other deer. (研究表明,这种行为实际上有助于保护它们免受一种特定蠕虫的感染。这些蠕虫是依靠其他动物生存的小型生物,有时会使这些动物生病。鹿随着年龄增长,身体更有可能变得虚弱,但它们可以通过减少与其他鹿相处的时间来降低遇到这种蠕虫的风险。)”可知,年长的雌性马鹿减少社交,是为了降低接触特定寄生虫的风险,从而预防感染相关疾病。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“In the future, scientists will examine how the observed patterns of social behavior changes in aging animals might relate to similar processes in people. The research may lead to new approaches to supporting elderly populations by understanding when reduced sociability represents normal adaptation and when intervention might be beneficial. (未来,科学家们将研究观察到的衰老动物社会行为模式的变化可能与人类类似过程存在何种关联。通过了解社交能力下降何时属于正常适应,何时进行干预可能有益,这项研究或许会催生出支持老年群体的新方法。)”可推知,科学家下一步的研究重点是探索动物衰老的社交行为模式在人类身上的应用,为老年人群照护提供新方法。故选A项。
D
Foods that awaken a sense of nostalgia (怀旧)and comfort are important considerations in prepared meals aimed at older adults, according to new research.
“We want to help the prepared food industry produce attractive, healthy meals for older adults,” said Carolyn Ross, a professor. “Malnutrition (营养不良) is quite prevalent in people over 60 because food may be available, but they won’t eat it if they don’t like it. We want to walk a line where food is tasty, convenient, and full of nutrients.”
In a recently published paper, Ross and her team developed desirable and nutritious dairy-rich breakfasts and desserts for older adults. They asked 81 people, with an average age of 71, to taste two breakfasts and two desserts. Scientists then asked a series of questions about the meals and individual eating habits.
Ross said, “We asked what people thought about when it came to food and nostalgia. Many responses were tied to a person, like their grandmother’s cookies. If a product awakened more nostalgia, then we found that they liked it more.”
“Studying food nostalgia is a newer field of food science,” Ross said, “but examining comfort food is a bit more established.” Preference can vary widely due to cultural differences. In this study, whenever people labeled something as a comfort food, they liked it more. One ingredient was commonly placed in the comfort food category: cheese. “Participants’ perceived comfort level decreased if we decreased the flavor level,” Ross said. “When the participants said there wasn’t enough cheese flavor in the meal, then the comfort associated with the meal decreased.”
The research team also found that food texture (口感) is important, which is not a new conclusion. “It’s not one specific texture that matters; it’s a variety of textures,” Ross said. “Having a diet with a lot of texture variety, including textures like crispy (酥脆的) and hard, along with soft and creamy foods, really stood out. For older adults, who may not be able to eat the same hard and crispy foods they once could, keeping as much texture variety as possible is still important.”
12. What does the underlined word “prevalent” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Constant. B. Sudden. C. Common. D. Different.
13. What mainly affects people’s food choices according to the study?
A. Food textures. B. Food ingredients. C. Individual habits. D. Personal memories.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A. Age influences people’s taste. B. Texture matters more than flavor.
C. Less cheese makes food less comforting. D. Comfort food is linked to a sense of nostalgia.
15. What might Ross agree with according to the last paragraph?
A. Old people should stick to their favorite texture.
B. A variety of textures make food more appealing.
C. Old people should avoid hard and crispy textures.
D. Soft and creamy textures are important for people.
C 13. D 14. C 15. B
根据第二段中“Malnutrition(营养不良) is quite prevalent in people over 60 because food may be available, but they won’t eat it if they don’t like it.(营养不良在60岁以上的人群中相当prevalent,因为虽然食物可能唾手可得,但如果他们不喜欢,就不会吃。)”
根据第四段中“We asked what people thought about when it came to food and nostalgia. Many responses were tied to a person, like their grandmother’s cookies. If a product awakened more nostalgia, then we found that they liked it more.(我们问人们在谈到食物和怀旧时会想到什么。许多回答都与一个人有关,比如他们祖母的饼干。如果一个产品唤起了更多的怀旧感,那么我们发现他们更喜欢它。)”可知,根据这项研究,个人记忆主要影响人们的食物选择。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“One ingredient was commonly placed in the comfort food category: cheese. “Participants’ perceived comfort level decreased if we decreased the flavor level,” Ross said. “When the participants said there wasn’t enough cheese flavor in the meal, then the comfort associated with the meal decreased.”(有一种成分通常被归为安慰食品类别:奶酪。“如果我们降低味道水平,参与者感知到的舒适度就会降低,”罗斯说。“当参与者说餐食中奶酪的味道不够时,与餐食相关的舒适度就会降低。”)”可知,奶酪越少,食物就越不令人舒适。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The research team also found that food texture (口感) is important, which is not a new conclusion. “It’s not one specific texture that matters; it’s a variety of textures,” Ross said. “Having a diet with a lot of texture variety, including textures like crispy (酥脆的) and hard, along with soft and creamy foods, really stood out. For older adults, who may not be able to eat the same hard and crispy foods they once could, keeping as much texture variety as possible is still important.”(研究团队还发现,食物的口感也十分重要,这并非一个全新的结论。

Susan let out a tired sigh (叹息) as she returned home at 10 pm. She’d been working double shifts since her husband Mark passed away three months earlier, and her feet ached from standing all day long. A lot of money had been spent on her husband’s medical treatment, and now her son Tommy was about to enter high school, which was exactly a time when money was needed.
Tommy was a thoughtful child who understood his mother’s struggles. He willingly shared household chores and even thought about getting a part-time job to help reduce the family’s financial strain. But Susan made it clear to Tommy that his priority (首要的事) was to study hard. At 15, Tommy had become her quiet rock, cooking dinner and finishing his homework alone while she was working.
But recently, Susan found Tommy often came home late after school. And his coat was dirty.
“Where have you been?” Susan asked, trying to keep the worry from sounding like anger.
“Uh, I’ve formed a study group with Eric and some guys. We’re cramming (突击备考) for midterms,” Tommy answered, avoiding her eyes.
Susan believed Tommy because he had never lied to her — not once. Eric was a straight-A student who’d been Tommy’s friend since the third grade. If Eric was there, everything must be fine.
But that changed on a Thursday afternoon. For her birthday the next day, Susan went to the supermarket, thinking of taking this opportunity to cook some of Tommy’s favorite dishes. While Susan was shopping, she happened to run into Eric’s mom. In the chat, Susan learned that Eric had never come home late recently.
Susan’s throat went dry. She didn’t understand why Tommy had lied to her. What if he was skipping school or hanging out with bad kids?
Without a second thought, Susan went straight to Tommy’s school and waited at the school gate. She wanted to follow him to see where he was going and what he was up to.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Shortly after school let out, Susan saw Tommy walk out of the school.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Susan realized that her son had collected recyclables to buy the scarf for her birthday.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Shortly after school let out, Susan saw Tommy walk out of the school. He didn’t head home directly. Instead, he turned into an alley and stopped beside a pile of cardboard boxes. Susan hid behind a tree, her heart pounding. She watched Tommy bend down, pick up the clean cardboard, and stuff it into a big cloth bag he carried. Then he went from door to door, collecting empty plastic bottles from the trash cans. Every few steps, he wiped the sweat off his forehead with his sleeve. He didn’t notice that his mother was watching him with tears in her eyes.
Susan realized that her son had collected recyclables to buy the scarf for her birthday. The next day was her birthday, and she suddenly remembered the scarf she had stared at in the shop window a week ago. Tommy must have noticed it. At that moment, Tommy turned around and saw her. He froze for a second, then smiled awkwardly. “Mom, I… I just wanted to buy you a birthday gift,” he mumbled. Susan rushed over and hugged him tightly. “It’s the best gift I’ve ever received,” she said, tears rolling down her cheeks. She knew that her little boy had grown up into a responsible and loving man.
①弯腰:bend down/stoop
②捡拾:pick up/collect
③塞:stuff/pack
④拥抱:hug/embrace

She knew that her little boy had grown up into a responsible and loving man.(运用了that引导的宾语从句)

Susan’s throat went dry She didn’t understand why Tommy had lied to her. What if he was skipping school or hanging out with bad kids?
Without a second thought, Susan went straight to Tommy’s school and waited at the school gate. She wanted to follow him to see where he was going and what he was up to.
