One day all that changed when I missed the bus home and decided to shoot baskets on the school playground to kill time. He came up to me and asked me who had taught me to play like that. I told him that my dad had taught me how to play basketball. He asked me if he would see me at the tryout on Friday. but I said no and told him why. He told me to have a try because I played very well and would maybe make some friends on the court. After thinking for a few minutes. I finally decided to have a try.
On the day of the tryout, the coach came, found me and helped me practice before the tryout. He helped me a lot and I did very well at the tryout and many members of the team were quite impressed. He helped me do my math which I had such a difficult time with and he even taught me how to live independently.

I will never forget Mr Colbath. He really inspired me and changed my life. I would not be the person that I am today if he had not taken such an interest in me when I was in high school.(我永远不会忘记科尔巴斯先生。

The pupils in Paula Merrigan’s kindergarten (幼儿园) class often call her Mom, or sometimes even Grandma, partly because Merrigan ensures all the children are greeted with a big smile when they enter the classroom in the morning. She works with every single one of them one-on-one at some point during the day, and she’s generous with praise, hugs, and affection.
“When small children tell you they love you, say it back to them,” said the teacher. “It’s important for every child to feel their teacher cares about them and that school is always a secure (安全的) place to stay. When they know you truly care about them, they want to do their best for you, because they’re seeking your approval.”
Merrigan also lets the children tell her their stories to learn what they’re passionate (热情的) about. “When you learn about certain things they like and tie them to your topic, they love it,” she said. “Maybe the children told you that they really like dinosaurs so when you’re teaching the letter ‘D’, you create a dinosaur art project to go with it.”
Considering separation anxiety hits many youngsters hard when they enter the kindergarten classroom, how children feel at the beginning of their schooling can set the tone for the rest of their academic life, experts say. “This is important for little ones because this is often the first time that they’re experiencing formal education,” said Hedy Chang, executive director of Attendance Works, a nonprofit working to boost (促进) student attendance. “What happens during this time can help lay the foundation for social and academic success.”
Researchers found students of all ages who miss an excessive amount of school often suffer from mental issues: They may need to feel nurtured, experts say. “To the degree that parents keep kids home from school because the kids say they don’t want to go,” said Deborah Stipek, an expert from Stanford University, “children’s relationship with the teacher should be an important factor.” Merrigan, who herself remembers faking being sick a few times as a child, couldn’t agree more.
8. Which of the following is NOT a way Merrigan uses to connect with children?
A. Working one-on-one with each child. B. Giving praise, hugs, and affection.
C. Letting children share their stories. D. Giving lots of homework to keep them busy.
9. What is Merrigan’s class like?
A. Warm, supportive, and engaging. B. Comfortable, quiet and test-score-driven.
C. Loving and teacher-centered. D. Caring and focused on personal work.
10. Why does Merrigan listen to her students’ personal stories?
A. To learn about children’s behavior patterns.
B. To help with exact grading and assessments (评价).
C. To easily manage possible classroom differences.
D. To make her students more focused on her lessons.
11. What is the best title for the passage?

When we are young, we learn that tigers and sharks are dangerous animals. We might be scared of them because they are big and powerful. As we get older, however, we learn that sometimes the most dangerous animals are also the smallest animals. In fact, the animal that kills the most people is one that you are familiar with: the mosquito (蚊子).
While it may seem that all mosquitoes are biters, this is not actually the case. Male mosquitoes eat plant nectar. On the other hand, female mosquitoes feed on animal blood. When a female mosquito bites a human being, it transmits (传播) saliva into the blood. This saliva may or may not contain a deadly disease. The result of the bite can be minor or as serious as death.
Because a mosquito can bite many people in its life, it can carry deadly diseases from one person to another very easily. More than 700 million people become sick from these diseases every year. At least 2 million of these people will die from these diseases.
In some households, mosquito nets are placed over beds to protect people against being bitten. Mosquitoes have many natural enemies like bats, birds, dragonflies, and certain kinds of fish. Bringing more of these animals into places where mosquitoes live might help to cut down the number of mosquitoes in that area. This is a natural solution, but it does not always work very well. Mosquitoes can also be killed with poisons or sprays. But these sprays may also harm other plants or animals.
Although mosquitoes may not seem as scary as larger, more powerful animals, they are far more dangerous to human beings. But things are changing. It is highly likely that one day scientists will find a way to keep everyone safe from mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.
12. Why does the passage mention dangerous animals like tigers and sharks?
A. To compare different animals.
B. To lead into the topic about mosquitoes.
C. To show how dangerous tigers and sharks are.
D. To show people’s misunderstanding of dangerous animals.
13. What can we learn about mosquitoes?
A. Female mosquitoes might transmit diseases to humans.
B. The saliva of female mosquitoes contains deadly diseases.
C. Male mosquitoes and female mosquitoes have the same eating habits.
D. More than 700 million people die from the diseases carried by the mosquitoes.
14. What’s paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Scientists are making efforts to kill mosquitoes.
B. Some useful measures are taken to kill mosquitoes.
C. There is no perfect solution to the mosquito problem.
D. Mosquitoes’ natural enemies could protect human beings.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the future of solving the mosquito problem?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Unclear. D. Negative.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. B

【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“In some households, mosquito nets are placed over beds to protect people against being bitten. Mosquitoes have many natural enemies like bats, birds, dragonflies, and certain kinds of fish. Mosquitoes can also be killed with poisons or sprays. But these sprays may also harm other plants or animals.

Here are some practical tips. First, start with pinyin to master correct pronunciation. Second, watch short Chinese videos daily to pick up natural expressions. Third, try chatting with native speakers as much as possible.
Learning takes patience, and I believe you can make it. Wish you steady progress in your Chinese learning journey!

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together.
One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”
“No,” said Henry. “Let’s go quietly home and not meddle with (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have. dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You! A coward!” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home.
In the afternoon, Henry went to school as usual. But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal.
From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well.
However Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore, Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

Henry accepted their apologies with a forgiving smile, proving that real courage was in doing the right thing despite misunderstandings.

A. Managing Parental Separation Anxiety. B. attendance and Academic (学业的) Achievement.
C. Creative Kindergarten Teaching Methods. D. Developing Emotional Connections in Kindergartens.
D

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together.
One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight!
However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore, Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.
