Beginning in Venice on April 26,2022, Vienna Cammarota, a simple grandmother in her 70s as well as a well-known hiker, arrived in China last month, the last stop of her journey retracing the route of Marco Polo to the East, covering more than 20,000 kilometers.
Inspired by Marco Polo, who traveled to China along the ancient Silk Road in 1275, Cammarota set off from the legendary explorer’s hometown of Venice to retrace the route on foot. Marco Polo lived in China for 17 years and in his travelogue provided detailed descriptions of the country, which allowed Westerners to learn about the appeal of this Eastern nation for the first time. Cammarota hopes to see more of modern China by following in Marco Polo’s footsteps. “I want to compare the China described by Marco Polo over 700 years ago with the China of today through my journey. I also hope to share my experiences and observations in China with my fellow Italians,” she says.
Cammarota admits she sometimes found herself mired in moments when she wanted to give up everything and go home. “There have been times when I couldn’t find anyone to give me advice, provide information about places to visit, guide me through border crossings, or even help with accommodation. In those moments, I felt frustrated and discouraged. Fortunately, those feelings never last long and I always find a way to work through them,” she says. In her time of need, she has often received kindness and hospitality from strangers. Her concerns about language barriers were addressed through body language, which she says is quite effective.
Starting from Kashgar, Cammarota will begin a 15-month cultural journey across China and explore over 30 cities in 17 provinces and autonomous regions. Her journey will end in Beijing to mark the 750th anniversary of Marco Polo’s arrival in China. Her goal is to experience the profound cultural heritage of Chinese civilization, witness the development and achievements of modern China, and call for global harmony and inclusiveness by bringing into modern view the Silk Road history and spirit to boost dialogue and understanding between the East and the West.
4 Why did Cammarota follow Marco Polo’s footsteps to the East?
A. To prove her capability as a hiker.
B. To witness a different modern China.
C. To highlight the achievements of China.
D. To arouse people’s curiosity towards China.
5. What does the underlined word “mired” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Trapped. B. Tired. C. Occupied. D. Opposed.
6. Which of the following word can best describe Cammarota’s trip?
A. Plain sailing. B. Adventurous. C. Rewarding. D. Harmonious.
7. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Female Hiker Accomplishes Marco Polo’s Journey
B. Italian Grandmother Puts Her Best Foot Forward
C. Italian Hiker Shows Modern China to The Westerners
D. Senior Woman Advocates Global Harmony by Hiking

When it comes to slimming down, how your food is prepared may matter more than its nutrition content. A study from University College London(UCL) found that a diet of minimally processed foods over ultra-processed products leads to faster slimming — even when both plans meet the same nutritional guidelines. The benefit of consuming minimally (最低程度地) processed food (MPF) was limited, however. There was little evidence that it resulted in better health overall.
There is growing interest in the impact of the industrial techniques used to make ultra-processed (超加工的) food (UPF). Researchers suspect that the soft texture of many UPFs — and the fact they tend to contain more calories per bite — make them harder to resist and easier to overeat, compared with home-cooked alternatives, which may look nutritionally very similar.
The study followed 55 adults, all of whom were overweight, as they alternated between two eight-week diets. One was made up almost entirely of UPF, the other mostly consisted of minimally processed foods, such as homemade spaghetti or overnight oats. In both cases, the participants were provided with meals that meet official healthy standards. They were given more food than they were likely to eat and were told to consume as much or as little as they liked.
On both diets, they lost weight. But those on the MPF diet lost roughly twice as much: an average of 2.06 percent of their body weight, compared with 1.05 percent on the UPF diet. The weight loss was due to a decreased intake of calories, compared with the participants’ previous diets, which had included an average of about 65 per cent UPF and failed to meet the healthy recommendations. Researchers estimated that over a year, men could lose 13% and women 9% on MPF, compared to 4 — 5% on UPF.
The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, also explored health markers like blood pressure and cholesterol, but results were not clear enough to prove which diet was better for overall health.
Gunter Kuhnle, professor of nutrition at the University of Reading, said: “The most interesting result of the study is that participants on both groups lost weight, which contradicts claims that ultra-processed foods result in weight gain.”
8. Why do ultra-processed foods likely contribute to overeating?
A. They are less tasty. B. They are harder to digest.
C. They contain fewer calories. D. They have a soft texture and higher calorie.
9. What can be inferred about the participants in the study?
A. They were all teenagers. B. They ate less than they needed.
C. They had freedom in how much they ate. D. They followed the same diet for sixteen weeks.
10. What would the author probably agree with?
A. UPF diets are better for lowering cholesterol.
B. MPF diets greatly improve all health indicators.
C. How food is prepared may influence weight control.
D. Weight loss has nothing to do with food processing.
11. What does Professor Gunter Kuhnle find most interesting about the study?
A. Both groups lost weight. B. The MPF group was much healthier.
C. The UPF group gained weight. D. The study was too short.
D
Researchers have developed a robotic sensor that combines artificial intelligence techniques to read Braille (盲文) at speeds roughly double those of most human readers. The research team, from the University of Cambridge, used machine learning algorithms (算法) to teach a robotic sensor to quickly slide over lines of Braille text.
The robotic sensor the researchers used has a camera in its “fingertip”, and reads by combining information from the camera and its built-in sensors. “This is a hard problem for roboticists as there’s a lot of image processing that needs to be done to remove motion blur (模糊) — a process that is time-and-energy-consuming,” said Parth Potdar from Cambridge’s Department of Engineering.
“There are existing robotic Braille readers, but they only read one letter at a time, which is not how humans read,” said Potdar. “Existing robotic Braille readers work in a relatively static way: they touch one letter pattern, read it, pull up from the surface, move over, and lower down onto the next letter pattern, and so on. We want something that’s more realistic and far more efficient.”
The team developed machine learning algorithms so the robotic reader would be able to “deblur” the images before the sensor attempted to recognise the letters. They trained the algorithms on a set of sharp images of Braille with fake blur applied. Once the algorithms had learned to deblur the letters, the team used a computer vision model to detect and classify each character.
After the algorithms were incorporated, the researchers tested their reader by sliding it quickly along rows of Braille characters. The robotic Braille reader could read 315 words per minute with 87% accuracy, which is twice as fast and about as accurate as a human Braille reader.
“Braille reading speed is a great way to measure the dynamic performance of tactile (能触知的) sensing systems, so our findings could be applicable beyond Braille, for applications like detecting surface features or movement during robot operation,” said Potdar.
In the future, the researchers are hoping to scale the technology to the size of a human hand.
12. How does the newly developed robotic sensor read Braille according to the text?
A. By only using the camera in its “fingertip” to capture images.
B. By combining data from its camera and internal sensors.
C. By touching one Braille letter pattern and then moving to the next.
D. By directly classifying Braille characters without image processing.
13. Why is the newly developed robotic sensor faster at reading Braille?
A It slides quickly along rows of Braille characters.
B. It has robotic sensors on the fingertip.
C. It uses machine learning algorithms to deblur images.
D. It relies only on its camera in the image processing.
14. What did Potdar want to express in Paragraph 6?
A. The promising future of their research results.
B. The good performance of the robot sensor.
C. The factors in making the tactile sensing systems.
D. The way to ensure the accuracy of the technology.
15. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Technology to be scaled to the size of a human hand.
B. Robots trained to read Braille at twice the speed of humans.
C. A great way to measure the performance of sensing systems.
D. Machine learning algorithms expected to change Braille writing.
Vegan Agriculture
Vegan farming (全素农业) has become more and more popular. It is one of the most environmentally-friendly forms of agriculture. Vegan farming is a good way to grow plants such as vegetables without using animal-derived materials such as their waste.___16___ Such an approach to farming also helps preserve the environment and regain soil richness and improve its biodiversity.
___17___Organic farming uses natural products to grow plants — that can include even animal waste as fertilizers. On the other hand vegan agriculture rejects animal-derived products and usually sticks with plant-based organic compounds, which means that, in general, vegan agriculture has stricter rules than organic farming.
Additionally, vegan farming usually chooses more natural ways to protect the plants, like breaking cycles of plants’ diseases with mixed cropping (混作), using mechanical barriers (机械屏障) such as nets, or even attracting opposing organisms to fight the harmful ones. ___18___ However, they might be less effective against certain plant diseases or pests.
One of the reasons to develop vegan agriculture is that the vegan way of farming replaces synthetic (合成的) pesticides and uses organic pesticides or other non-chemical methods to protect the crops. By contrast, in conventional agriculture, synthetic pesticides are on a very high level. ___19___
In the future, it is of great significance not to rely on animals’ waste to feed plants. Doing so is not only beneficial to vegans.___20___ Even if today’s methods of vegan agriculture might not be perfect, scientists worldwide, together with vegan farmers, are working towards developing plant-based solutions as alternatives to animal-derived fertilizers.
A. Accordingly, the amount of them in food products is much higher.
B. Also, vegan farmers are far from applying synthetic fertilizers.
C. It is apparent that vegan agriculture is not the same as organic farming.
D. In today’s world, the vegan diet and lifestyle are increasingly popular.
E. But it’s also good for the whole world, including other animals and plants.
F. These ways affect the environment less than the ways of traditional farming.
G. The rise of veganism creates new demand for more vegan-friendly agriculture.

I begged my mom to let me make cookies by myself. Even though I had never attempted baking before, I was nine years old and my friend Emmie had been baking cupcakes by herself for a year. I was determined to prove that I could make it.
My brother, Caleb, laughed at the idea of me cooking alone, calling it a disaster. Having a big brother can be annoying. Despite his laughing, my mom agreed to let me try. She reminded me to take my time and be careful because I’d had some messy spills before I was nine.
I raced to the kitchen and went to work. I cracked eggs and put a cold stick of butter into the bowl. I turned on the mixer at medium speed—and whoa. Whoa. Whoa! What a disaster! I had to wipe butter off my face, then off the table and floor.
Caleb made fun of me again, calling me a mess. I chased him away with a spoon and turned back to the mixing bowl. I started again with softer butter. Referring to the recipe, I poured everything needed into the bowl and mixed it. After that, I put round batter (面糊) onto the cookie sheet and put it into the oven (烤箱). Within a minute, a fantastic smell filled the kitchen—the smell of cookie success!
I was going to prove that I was responsible. No more eye-rolling from my brother. No more “You’re too young” from my parents. I was grown up and in control.
I stared into the oven, and my heart sank. The neat, little balls had melted (融化) and overflowed to the edges of the cookie sheet. I pulled the pan out just as Caleb wandered back into the kitchen.
“What in the world?” He started to laugh. “Cookie soup?”
“You just be quiet,” I whispered, trying not to cry. “Just leave me alone.”
“How’s it going in there?” Dad called from the living room.
Caleb raised his eyebrows and bit his lip. I responded that everything was fine, pouring the melted batter into the bowl quickly.

Beginning in Venice on April 262022, Vienna Cammarota, a simple grandmother in her 70s as well as a well-known hiker, arrived in China last month, the last stop of her journey retracing the route of Marco Polo to the East, covering more than 20,000 kilometers.
4. Why did Cammarota follow Marco Polo’s footsteps to the East?
A. To prove her capability as a hiker.
B. To witness a different modern China.
C. To highlight the achievements of China.
D. To arouse people’s curiosity towards China.
5. What does the underlined word “mired” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Trapped. B. Tired. C. Occupied. D. Opposed.
6. Which of the following word can best describe Cammarota’s trip?
A. Plain sailing. B. Adventurous. C. Rewarding. D. Harmonious.
7. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Female Hiker Accomplishes Marco Polo’s Journey
B. Italian Grandmother Puts Her Best Foot Forward
C. Italian Hiker Shows Modern China to The Westerners
D. Senior Woman Advocates Global Harmony by Hiking
B 5. A 6. C 7. B

D 9. C 10. C 11. A
根据第二段“Researchers suspect that the soft texture of many UPFs — and the fact they tend to contain more calories per bite — make them harder to resist and easier to overeat, compared with home-cooked alternatives, which may look nutritionally very similar. (研究人员认为,与家常烹饪的食物相比,许多超加工食品的口感较为柔软,而且每口所含的热量往往更高,这使得人们更难以抗拒它们,也更容易吃得过多。而这些快餐食品的外观在营养成分上可能与家常食物非常相似)”可知,超加工食品可能会导致过度进食是因为它们质地柔软且热量较高。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“They were given more food than they were likely to eat and were told to consume as much or as little as they liked. (他们得到了比他们实际所需更多的食物,并被告知可以随意摄入多少都行)”可知,该研究中的参与者对于饮食量有着一定的自主权。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“When it comes to slimming down, how your food is prepared may matter more than its nutrition content. (说到减肥问题,食物的烹饪方式可能比其营养成分更重要)”以及第四段“On both diets, they lost weight. But those on the MPF diet lost roughly twice as much: an average of 2.06 percent of their body weight, compared with 1.05 percent on the UPF diet.
根据最后一段“Gunter Kuhnle, professor of nutrition at the University of Reading, said: “The most interesting result of the study is that participants on both groups lost weight, which contradicts claims that ultra-processed foods result in weight gain.” (雷丁大学营养学教授贡特尔·库恩勒表示:“该研究最有趣的结果是,两组参与者都减轻了体重,这与超加工食品会导致体重增加的说法相矛盾。”)”可知,Gunter Kuhnle教授认为这项研究中最有趣的是两个组都减重了。故选A。
B By combining data from its camera and internal sensors.
C. By touching one Braille letter pattern and then moving to the next.
D. By directly classifying Braille characters without image processing.
13. Why is the newly developed robotic sensor faster at reading Braille?
A. It slides quickly along rows of Braille characters.
B 13. C 14. A 15. B

根据第四段“The team developed machine learning algorithms so the robotic reader would be able to “deblur” the images before the sensor attempted to recognise the letters.(该团队开发了机器学习算法,以便机器人阅读者能够在传感器尝试识别字母之前先对图像进行“去模糊”处理)”和第五段“After the algorithms were incorporated, the researchers tested their reader by sliding it quickly along rows of Braille characters. The robotic Braille reader could read 315 words per minute with 87% accuracy, which is twice as fast and about as accurate as a human Braille reader.(在将算法整合进去之后,研究人员通过让机器人阅读一排排盲文字符来对其进行测试。这款机器人盲文阅读器每分钟能够读出315个单词,准确率为87%,其速度是人类盲文阅读器的两倍,准确度也与之相当)”可知,新开发的机器人传感器能更快地阅读盲文是因为它使用机器学习算法来去除图像模糊。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段““Braille reading speed is a great way to measure the dynamic performance of tactile (能触知的) sensing systems, so our findings could be applicable beyond Braille, for applications like detecting surface features or movement during robot operation,” said Potdar.(波特达尔表示:“布莱叶盲文阅读速度是衡量触觉感知系统动态性能的一种有效方法,因此我们的研究成果不仅适用于布莱尔盲文阅读这一领域,还能够应用于诸如检测机器人运行过程中的表面特征或动作等其他领域。”)” 故选A项。

On the other hand, vegan agriculture rejects animal-derived products and usually sticks with plant-based organic compounds, which means that, in general, vegan agriculture has stricter rules than organic farming.

注意:

Paragraph 2: I brought a plate of cookies into the living room for my parents.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
I picked up the directions, wondering what had gone wrong. It was then that I realized I had forgotten to add the flour! The batter had been too runny, causing the cookies to spread out. I quickly mixed in the flour and spooned the batter onto a new cookie sheet. This time, I watched carefully as they rose and browned in the oven. The sweet aroma filled the kitchen, and my heart beat with excitement. I couldn’t wait to show my family what I had accomplished. Caleb sneaked in and raised his eyebrows, but this time, I just smiled confidently.
Paragraph 2:
I brought a plate of cookies into the living room for my parents. They looked surprised and delighted. “These are…yours?” Mom asked, taking a cautious bite. “They’re…amazing!” She smiled, and Dad nodded in agreement. Caleb sat on the couch, a cookie in his hand, and his face betrayed a hint of pride. “I told you she could do it,” he said with a grin. I beamed, feeling a sense of accomplishment wash over me. I had proved myself, not just to my family but to myself. From that day on, no one doubted my baking skills again.
