Motuo (墨脱) lies in the south of the Himalayas in Xizang. It is known as the “Natural Museum of Xizang”. It is home to all kinds of mountains, rivers, waterfalls, plants and animals. Its special geographic location (地理位置) makes it a beautiful place. It was one of the hardest places to reach and was the last city in China without a highway.
The construction (施工) of the first highway to Motuo started in the 1960s. However, it was not completed until over 50 years later. In 2014, the construction of its second highway—the Paimo Highway started. In October 2022, the construction of the main body of the highway was completed.
They are great engineering projects. In this area, earthquakes and heavy rains happened very often. There could be falling rocks or even landslides (滑坡). People must build many walls and nets to protect the two highways. Another challenge was the snow. Plenty of snow sometimes destroyed rocks and roads. As a result, the construction of the highways to Motuo was stopped several times. To solve this problem, people built a tunnel (隧道) that goes through the mountain area.
The two highways stand for the Chinese spirit of “never giving up”. They are ways to connect Motuo to the outside world and show how China cares about people in the far areas.

B. It’s in the north of the Himalayas.
C. It’s in the east of the Himalayas.

A. People must build a tunnel.

The oil-paper umbrella has a history of over 1,000 years in China. There are different stories about the umbrella in China. The most popular one is related to Lu Ban.
One day, Lu Ban and his younger sister visited the West Lake. It started raining suddenly. The sister said, “Let’s have a competition, before sunrise tomorrow, who comes up with a way to make it possible for people to visit the West Lake even on rainy days will be the winner.” Lu Ban thought it was easy. He collected some tools and materials and spent the whole night building 10 pavilions (凉亭) around the lake.
The next morning, when Lu Ban talked about his achievements and felt proud, his sister held something unusual in her hand, it could be opened into a round shape. What is it? After a while, he found the object which was made of silk and bamboo could be opened and closed easily. Lu Ban said, “You win. It was light, beautiful and easy to carry. And it can also protect us from rain.” So the umbrella was invented.
Later when paper was invented, people used much cheaper paper to replace (替代) silk, cutting the cost of umbrellas. To make the umbrella waterproof (防水的), people brushed oil across the surface. That was how the oil-paper umbrella was invented.
Now, most people use modern umbrellas in their daily lives, while oil-paper umbrellas have gone into decline (走下坡路). But in 1990, Dai Gensheng, a local of Jialu Village, set up the Jialu oil-paper umbrella factory to protect and pass on (传承) the traditional handicraft (手工艺). Motuo (墨脱) lies in the south of the Himalayas in Xizang. It is known as the “Natural Museum of Xizang”. It is home to all kinds of mountains rivers, waterfalls, plants and animals.

The next morning when Lu Ban talked about his achievements and felt proud, his sister held something unusual in her hand, it could be opened into a round shape.
So far, the oil-paper umbrellas produced by Dai’s company have been exported (出口) to 28 countries.
