In middle school I was one of the “gifted” kids. For those three short years, I felt like I was on top of the world.
Then high school began. All of a sudden, I was no longer at the top of my class. My papers were filled with corrections, not praise.
My parents didn’t understand. From what they had known about me when I was younger, they thought that I was perfect, and so I had to be perfect all the time. Their worries grew — they began to search for private teachers and would often talk to me, trying to find out what was wrong with me. My concern grew too — the pressure to live up to their expectations only became greater. I found myself worrying about school all the time. I even questioned myself — who was I, if not the perfect student?
Watching Simone Biles drop out of the Olympics made me think of myself. Simone Biles was the GOAT. If there was any person we knew we could count on to win, it was Simone.
Unlike me, Simone recognized the pressure she was under. She had the bravery and self-reflective (自我反思的) skills to be able to realize that the pressure of perfection was too much for her. Simone Biles has taught me a very important lesson: to be the greatest person of all time, mental (心理的) health must come first. Instead of getting down on myself for not becoming the best, I need to learn from Simone and be kind to myself by taking a break or even asking for help if necessary.
4. How did the author feel in high school?
A. Bored ana tired. B. Excited and surprised. C. Confident and proud. D. Nervous and anxious.
5. What can we say about the author’s parents?
A. They fully understood the author’s situation. B. They had great expectations of the author.
C. They managed to lower the author’s pressure. D. They pushed the author to learn from Simone Biles.
6. What do the underlined words “the GOAT” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. The best ever. B. The most grateful of all time.
C. The worst ever. D. The most graceful of all time.
7. How did Simone Biles influence the author?
A. She encouraged the author never to give up.
B. She taught the author useful self-reflective skills.
C. She showed the author the true meaning of perfection.
D. She made the author realize the value of mental health.
C
Lack of sleep has been linked with some health problems. As a result, the National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults receive at least seven hours of shut-eye each night. Now, new research offers another reason to focus on nightly rest. According to results from Stockholm University, a few nights of fitful sleep can make you feel years older than you really are, while sleep with a consistent pattern (持续的模式) in the same time and space can have the opposite effect, making you feel younger.
“Sleep has a main effect on how old you feel, and it’s not only your long-term sleep patterns,” says Balter, a co-author of the study. “Even when you only sleep less for two nights, that has a real effect on how you feel.” This feeling is known as “subjective (主观的) age”. Previous studies have found that how old a person feels, both physically and mentally, may have a real effect on health and lifetime.
In the research, Balter and another sleep expert, John, first asked 429 people questions to check their past month of sleep. They found that with each day of bad sleep the average person had got in the past month, their “subjective age” increased by nearly three months. And those who had experienced no days of bad sleep said they felt an average of six years younger than their true age. Next, they ran an experiment in which 186 volunteers experienced two consistent nights of bad sleep — a sleep limited to four hours per night, or two consistent nights of good sleep — nine hours of enough sleep. Then, each volunteer described their “subjective age”. After two nights of limited sleep, the volunteers reported feeling an average of 4.4 years older than their true age, while those with two nights of enough sleep felt an average of three months younger.
“If you protect your sleep, you can feel younger,” Balter says. “We know those who feel younger than their actual age live healthier and longer, so try to develop good sleep habits.”
8. What does the underlined word “fitful” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Irregular. B. Unexpected. C. Enough. D. Proper.
9. What is the effect of sleeping less for two nights according to Balter?
A. It improves people’s emotions.
B. It makes people feel much older.
C. It changes long-term sleep patterns.
D. It has no effect on “subjective age” .
10. How did Balter and John carry on their research into sleep?
A. By making assumptions.
B. By drawing comparisons.
C. By asking other experts.
D. By checking historical data.
11. What does Balter want to do in the last paragraph?
A. Make a suggestion. B. Make a complaint.
C. Show his actual age. D. Show his personal habit.
D
Which is healthier: a pizza or a vegetable salad? That is an easy question. Now which is healthier: a pizza made by yourself or one made from the same basic ingredients (配料), pulled out of a box in the fridge?
Many people concerned with what they eat would immediately say the former, perhaps mentioning an unclear concern with “processed food”. Such food can often be delicious. And there is much to cheer about: being cheap and plentiful calories, when for most of human history they were neither. But Chris van Tulleken’s new book, “Ultra-Processed People”, explains that cheapness and plentifulness come at a cost.
Mr van Tulleken, a doctor and television presenter, tells the difference between “ultra-processed food” (UPF) and “processed food”. Almost everything people eat is processed in some form: rice is harvested, animals are butchered (屠宰). He uses an idea proposed by Carlos Monteiro, a food scientist, describing UPF as “products of ingredients, mostly of only industrial use, made by a series of industrial processes, many requiring advanced equipment and technology”.
The additives in UPF harm people in a range of ways both known and unknown. Calorie-rich but usually nutrient-poor, UPF contributes to overweight in part because its delicious taste and soft mouthfeel lead to overeating.
Because this food is cheap to produce and buy, UPF replaces healthier choices, particularly for poor people. Extra weight was once a sign of wealth, but among British and American women today, overweight rates are higher at lower-income levels.
Environment matters, too. People living in places where “UPF is everywhere but real food is hard to reach” could spend large amounts of time and money seeking out fresh food, but that is not how most people live. There is nothing wrong with the strange fast-food trip, but anyone who can afford to eat less UPF probably should.
12. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By presenting facts. B. By listing figures.
C. By raising questions. D. By making comparisons.
13. Which of the following will Mr van Tulleken probably agree with?
A. UPF is delicious and healthy. B. Almost all food is processed.
C. Processed food is unhealthy. D. UPF is the same as processed food.
14. Which one is the cost of “ultra-processed food”?
A. Delicious taste and overeating. B. Soft mouthfeel and poor nutrition.
C. Poor nutrition and overweight. D. Industrial processes and overweight.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward the “Ultra-processed food”?
A. Hopeful. B. Unclear. C. Negative. D. Positive.
Train Your Brain to Think in Another Language
We’ve all heard that thinking in a foreign language is a sign of real fluency. But I bet you haven’t heard that it’s the fifth key language skill that all learners must develop—falling right in line with speaking, listening, reading and writing. ____16____ All it takes is some practice.
Translate your thoughts.
Start by describing what’s around you. When you see a tree you could think “tree” in your target language. If the correct word for tree isn’t coming to you, think “green”, “wood” or anything else that can describe it. ____17____ If you’re really limited in terms of vocabulary, you could even count people, animals or objects in your head. Anything helps!
____18____
One of the best things about this strategy is that you won’t have to make many changes to your schedule. These are things you’ll already be doing, just do them in your target language! From writing your to-do list to reading the news, there are so many options to choose from!
Read more first person literature.
Reading is so important when it comes to learning a language. If you read books written in the first person, you’ll see direct benefits: ____19____ You get to read someone else’s thoughts so that you can think your own! How cool is that?
Write in a journal.
Because journaling is writing down your thoughts, it gets you into the habit of thinking in your target language, especially if you’re finding thinking itself to be difficult at first. Basically, it’s just another way to practice, although it’s slower. ____20____
A. Like the other skills, thinking in your target language is absolutely learnable.
B. It doubles as writing practice, too!
C. Learn to make a balanced schedule.
D. Carry out your daily activities in your target language.
E. Same goes for buildings, animals, clothing, whatever.
F. Obviously, these books give you the main character’s thoughts.
G. One of them is that you will find your reading speed greatly improved.

In middle school, I was one of the “gifted” kids.

根据第一段中的“According to results from Stockholm University, a few nights of fitful sleep can make you feel years older than you really are, while sleep with a consistent pattern (持续的模式) in the same time and space can have the opposite effect, making you feel younger.(根据斯德哥尔摩大学的研究结果,几晚____的睡眠会让你感觉比实际年龄老几岁,而在相同的时间和空间内保持连续的睡眠模式则会产生相反的效果,让你感觉更年轻。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段中的“‘Sleep has a main effect on how old you feel, and it’s not only your long-term sleep patterns,’ says Balter, a co-author of the study. ‘Even when you only sleep less for two nights, that has a real effect on how you feel.’(‘睡眠对你感觉多老有主要影响,而且不仅仅是你的长期睡眠模式,’该研究的共同作者Balter说。‘即使你只少睡了两晚,那也会对你感觉如何产生真正的影响。’)”可知,Balter认为只少睡了两晚,也会对你感觉如何产生真正的影响,即让人感觉更老。故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段第一句“In the research, Balter and another sleep expert, John, first asked 429 people questions to check their past month of sleep.(在这项研究中,Balter和另一位睡眠专家John首先向429人提出问题,以检查他们过去一个月的睡眠情况。)”和最后一句“After two nights of limited sleep, the volunteers reported feeling an average of 4.4 years older than their true age, while those with two nights of enough sleep felt an average of three months younger.(在连续两个晚上睡眠不足后,志愿者报告说他们的平均主观年龄比实际年龄大4.4岁,而那些连续两个晚上睡眠充足的人则平均年轻了三个月。)”
根据最后一段“‘If you protect your sleep, you can feel younger,’ Balter says. ‘We know those who feel younger than their actual age live healthier and longer, so try to develop good sleep habits.’(‘如果你保护好自己的睡眠,你会感觉更年轻,’Balter说。‘我们知道那些比实际年龄感觉更年轻的人活得更健康、更长久,所以试着养成良好的睡眠习惯。’)”可知,Balter在最后一段想给人们提建议,即保护好睡眠,养成良好的睡眠习惯。故选A项。

A. Hopeful. B. Unclear. C. Negative. D. Positive.
C 13. B 14. C 15. C

根据第一段“Which is healthier: a pizza or a vegetable salad? That is an easy question. Now which is healthier: a pizza made by yourself or one made from the same basic ingredients, pulled out of a box in the fridge? (披萨和蔬菜沙拉哪个更健康?这是一个简单的问题。你自己做的披萨更健康,还是从冰箱里的盒子里拿出来,用同样的基本原料做的披萨更健康)”可知,作者通过提出两个问题引入话题,引导读者思考加工食品与健康之间的关系。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Mr van Tulleken, a doctor and television presenter, tells the difference between “ultra-processed food” (UPF) and “processed food”. Almost everything people eat is processed in some form: rice is harvested, animals are butchered. (van Tulleken先生是一名医生和电视节目主持人,他告诉我们“超加工食品”(UPF)和“加工食品”之间的区别。人们吃的几乎所有东西都经过某种形式的加工:大米被收割,动物被屠宰)”可推知,他认为几乎所有食物都经过加工。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Calorie-rich but usually nutrient-poor, UPF contributes to overweight in part because its delicious taste and soft mouthfeel lead to overeating. (UPF富含卡路里,但通常缺乏营养,它会导致超重,部分原因是它美味的味道和柔软的口感会导致暴饮暴食)”可知,超加工食品的代价之一是营养不良和超重。故选C项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段中“There is nothing wrong with the strange fast-food trip, but anyone who can afford to eat less UPF probably should. (这种奇怪的快餐之旅并没有什么错,但任何有能力少吃UPF的人可能都应该这样做)”可知,作者提到超加工食品虽然廉价且美味,但其添加剂对健康有害,且会导致超重等问题。此外,作者还指出超加工食品取代了更健康的选择,尤其是对贫困人群不利,呼吁大家尽量避免这类食品。因此,作者对超加工食品的态度是否定的。故选C项。

When you see a tree, you could think “tree” in your target language.
E. Same goes for buildings animals, clothing, whatever.

Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Jim,
I am glad to learn that you would like to exercise to keep fit. I believe running is the best choice. My reasons are as follows.
First of all, the physical benefits from running have long been recognized as it helps increase the body’s flow of blood and oxygen, which thus strengthens the immune system and reduces the risk of diseases. What’s more, running can certainly become a long-term hobby, since it takes only a pair of running shoes and can easily and flexibly be added to your schedule. Last but not least, running can improve one’s mood and particularly provide relief from pain or tension. Therefore, you can also achieve mental well-being if you take up running as a hobby. All in all, I’d like to recommend running as a sport that you can do regularly.
Why not give it a try? Just put on your trainers and get started. Then keep going. I’m sure you will get a lot out of running.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
