17. What percentage of American AI users show politeness to AI search engines?
A. About 25%. B. About 33%. C. About 67%.
18. What were participants in the second group asked to do in the experiment?
A. List things they were grateful for.
B. Record their daily problems.
C. Keep a regular journal.
19. Who wrote the book The How of Happiness?
A. Robert Emmons. B. Sonja Lyubomirsky. C. Michael McCullough.
20. What is the speaker’s attitude towards being polite to AI?
A. Favorable. B. Critical. C. Uncertain.
C 18. B 19. B 20. A
W: A 2024 survey found that around 67% of American AI users are also polite and show gratitude towards AI search engines. In April, a netizen asked whether there’s a cost to all this politeness. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman saw the post and responded, “Tens of millions of dollars well spent — you never know.” In reality, AI chatbots do not appreciate politeness, they lack feelings
However, I believe it is necessary to be polite to AI.
In their book The Psychology of Gratitude, psychologists Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough wrote about a 10-week experiment they carried out. They divided participants into 3 groups, asking the first to list things they were grateful for, the second to list daily troubles and the third to just keep a journal. They found that the first group reported 25% higher happiness levels. Sonja Lyubomirsky, author of the book The How of Happiness, found that small, frequent acts of kindness led to consistent and significant increases in happiness.
So perhaps all of our “pleases” and “thank yous” to AI have value, even if they cost millions of dollars annually. Showing appreciation, even towards a machine, reinforces positive habits of patience and empathy. Eventually, the one who benefits from our politeness isn’t the AI, but ourselves.

LONDON (Reuters)——Organic fruit, delivered right to the doorstep. That is what Gabriel Gold prefers, and he is willing to pay for it. If this is not possible, the 26-year-old computer technician will spend the extra money at the supermarket to buy organic food.
“Organic produce is always better,” Gold said, “The food is free of pesticides (农药), and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms. And more often than not, it is locally grown and seasonal, so it is more tasty. ” Gold is one of a growing number of shoppers buying into the organic trend, and supermarkets across Britain are counting on more like him as they grow their organic food business. But how many shoppers really know what they are getting, and why are they willing to pay a higher price for organic produce? Market research shows that Gold and others who buy organic food can generally give clear reasons for their preferences—but their knowledge of organic food is far from complete. For example, small amounts of pesticides can be used on organic products. And about three quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported to meet growing demand. “The demand for organic food is increasing by about one third every year, so it is a very fast-growing market." said Sue Flock, a specialist in this line of business.
26. More and more people in Britain are buying organic food because ________.
A. they consider the food free of pollution
B. they can get the food anywhere
C. they are getting richer
D. they like home-grown fruit
27. Which of the following statements is TRUE to the facts about most organic produce sold in Britain?
A. It grows indoors all year round. B. It is grown on family farms.
C. It is produced outside Britain. D. It is produced on large farms.
28. What is the meaning of the underlined words “the organic trend” in Paragraph2?
A. Higher prices of organic food. B. Better quality of organic food.
C. Rising market of organic food. D. Growing interest in organic food.
A 27. C 28. D

第二段开头“Organic produce is always better,” Gold said, “The food is free of pesticides (农药), and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms. And more often than not, it is locally grown and seasonal, so it is more tasty.可知,Gold说有机食品总是更好的,这种食物中没有农药……而Gold代表了现在英国人购买有机食品的趋势。所以我们能判断出越来越多的英国人买有机食品是因为他们认为这种食品没有污染。故选A。

And about three quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported to meet growing demand. 而根据第二段but their knowledge of organic food is far from complete.可知人们的很多认识是不全面的,下面举例子说明,人们认识不全面的地方,其中“The food is free of pesticides (农药), and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms(B, D). Visit a nearby national park
Our national parks are treasures. With over 400 of them, there’s bound to be something for everyone. There’s plenty of hiking, but most national parks have other things to do as well, including museums, performances of historical events, guided star tours, wildlife spotting, and swimming. Many parks are wheelchair accessible.
Go backyard glamping
Glamping is like camping but better — you’re outdoors but with all the comforts and amenities of a hotel. You can pay to go on a glamping destination vacation or just set up your own in your backyard. Set up a tent, fill it with pillows, cozy blankets, comfortable chairs, bean bags. Get takeout at your favorite restaurant and enjoy it together. Bonus: Unlike camping, there are clean bathrooms nearby.
Host a neighborhood dance party
Dancing with others is fun and good for you. But going into crowded dance clubs probably isn’t at the top of your to-do list right now. Thankfully, all you need for your own dance party is an outdoor speaker and a flat spot for dancing. String up some lights, fill a couple of coolers with drinks, and invite all your neighbors.

G 33. B 34. D 35. A 36. E
根据空前“Nowadays the sense of frustration(挫败)results from many things such as slow Internet connections and choosing what to wear to an event with an unclear dress code.(如今,这种挫败感来自很多方面,比如网速慢,以及在着装要求不明确的场合穿什么。)”可知我们的挫败感源于很多事情,根据下文“So next time you want to smash(砸碎)your computer, remember the following reasons for not taking life so seriously.(所以下次你想砸你的电脑时,记住以下不要把生活当回事的理由。)” Actually, most of our troubles are only as stressful as we choose to let them be.(事实上,我们大多数烦恼的压力都是我们选择让它们存在的。)
根据空前“In fact, once you have enough money to satisfy your basic needs, money makes very little difference in your overall well-being.(事实上,一旦你有足够的钱来满足你的基本需求,金钱对你的整体幸福的影响就很小了。)” Rich people aren’t happier people.
But what are you getting by stressing yourself out?
根据空后的“If you’re lucky enough to make it to age 90, you still have less than 800,000 hours between the time you are born and the time you die to enjoy all the things that make up life.(如果你足够幸运地活到90岁,从你出生到你死去,你还有不到80万小时的时间来享受生活。)”
根据上文“About one third of the hours will be spent in sleeping.(大约三分之一的时间用于睡眠。)”可知生命中大约三分之一的时间是在睡眠中度过的,根据空后“Do what you need to do to live a happy life and help others do the same.(做你需要做的事来过上幸福的生活,并帮助别人也这样做。)” So you’d better make full use of the remaining time.(所以你最好充分利用剩下的时间。)

When I was in seventh grade, my parents paid a tutor(家庭教师) forty dollars a week for her coming to my house and helping me with math. It ended up raising my marks from fifty to fifty-five.
I had to admit it was mainly my fault. Maybe I should have concentrated my math from the beginning. But studying math was a tough thing. Sitting on a chair to work on confusing math problems for two hours was a slow and painful process. During the process, I would fidget(坐立不安) and have many trips to the refrigerator in an attempt to get off that chair for at least five minutes.
During math tests, my teachers would always stay by my desk. My teachers and friends would frequently ask the question after tests,” How’s your math this time?" So I became extremely afraid of math. While normal people of my age were scared of some insects and adventurous travels, I feared anything to do with numbers. The thought of a teacher picking on me in class made me feel scared. The red marks on the test paper were also terrifying.
My fear of math got worse in ninth grade. Every report card I received from my new math teacher Ms Robbins had the comment to encourage me, "I'm glad to do what I can to help you.” But I couldn't tell her the real reason why I didn't ask for help-I didn’t want to be considered stupid. Every question I had was, in my opinion at the time, something that the whole class had understood but I. So instead, I ended up not caring about anything related to math, without working hard on math at all. And I concluded everything would work out in the end
Eventually, my classmates and I took the final test that would lead to our graduation from middle school and stepping into high school. Days after the exam-- on a rainy summer morning, Ms. Robbins called me.
Paragraph 1:
With worry and uncertainty, I entered her office.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
After I took the courage to tell my parents the bad news, they were silent.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1
With worry and uncertainty, I entered her office. After asking me to sit down, she told me that I failed the math test. And she suggested that I should spend another year in middle school if I wanted to be admitted to a relatively good high school. I burst into tears when I heard the news. Seeing that, Ms. Robbins came to comfort and encourage me, and said she'd like to offer any help if necessary. After leaving her office, I was anxious, wondering how to tell the bad news to my parents
Paragraph 2
After I took the courage to tell my parents the bad news, they were silent. My body shook, waiting for their blame. However, they encouraged me to have another try in ninth grade. It was then that I determined to take math seriously. The following day, I turned to Ms Robbins for help and told her about my determination. Ms. Robbins was happy that I finally decided to work hard on math. Thanks to her patient guidance, I made great progress and was not afraid of math any more. Finally, I made my way to a good high school and a university. Now I’m a doctor and I' m proud of myself.

Vacations are one of life’s best pleasures, but with the COVID-19 spreading and the Delta variant on the rise, you may have some trouble with your vacation. Have all the fun with ways less hassle by trying one of these staycation ideas.
Visit a nearby national park
Our national parks are treasures. With over 400 of them there’s bound to be something for everyone.
29. Which place might a history fan choose?
A. A nearby national park. B. A backyard glamping.
C. Dancing clubs. D. Wildlife museums.

Paragraph 2:
After I took the courage to tell my parents the bad news, they were silent.
