Starting high school can be difficult.
Everyone is nervous and nobody knows where to go for classes. Thinking about making new friends might make you feel nervous, too. But don’t worry. You are not alone. You are going to school with a group of students who are also your age, and we have several tips to share.
Forget your fear and just talk to someone. It might be easier said than done, but try to take a deep breath and voice. Don’t be afraid to approach people. Introduce yourself and start a conversation about something you have in common. Sit in the middle of the classroom with as many new friends around you as possible.
Join clubs.
Join after-school activities that interest you and make friends in the club. If you don’t join anything, you will be just going to class and then going home. Being in a club forces you to be more social.
Stay clean.
No one likes a bad smell that could knock someone over. Shower every day, brush your teeth and wash your hair. Try to make yourself look neat, whatever you wear.
Be respectful of people’s differences.
Everyone has his or her own opinion about the world and everyone believes in different things. It’s a good thing to have friends with different opinions because you can each share your own.
We hope these tips can help you. The Student Union is always ready to offer help. And you are welcome to join us!

Frightened, I was walking into my first school in America. I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, who had been here for three years. So I enrolled (登记) in the local high school in my new town.
On the first day, I went to my second class after I had missed my first. With anxiety, I reached for the door, opening it slowly. Without paying attention to my classmates, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered, “Yes.” His voice comforted me a little. He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India, we had fixed seats, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector (投影仪). In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.
It was noon. I was very confused about when I would have lunch. I went to my next class and the bell rang as I entered. I went through the regular process of asking the teacher if I was in the right class. She said, “It’s the fourth period.”
“But the bell just rang,” I said.
“That is the lunch bell, young man,” she said.
I apologized. Without another word I headed for the dining hall. I felt lucky because we didn’t have this in India. Everything here seemed like a hindrance I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus which we didn’t have in India either. I saw my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn’t so bad.

These next three years in senior high school may see many relationships coming to an end, a lot of drama between people, and especially a lot of stress (压力). During these next years, you’ll experience a lot, and hopefully, this advice could be of use to you.
First of all, high school is not how the movies show it to be. There are no life-changing things that make you popular, and there are no big parties where teens enjoy themselves together and new friends are made. The reality is that you’ll stay up till three in the morning doing homework, the food in the school isn’t the best, and you will cry about everything.
Just know walking through this next part of your life won’t be a simple walk in the park. You will go through difficulties, but at the end of the day, you’ll decide whether they’re going to influence you or not. While going through a difficult or unpleasant time, know that whatever happens these experiences don’t define (界定) you.
These next moments will be happy, mad, sad, etc. There will be amazing good days, and awful bad ones. Be yourself because many comments will be made about you, your friends, your attitude (态度), and everything in your life. Aside from those people that cause drama, make bad comments about you, and hurt you, there are people who love you and want the best for you. Learning this will take time and you’ll be hurt, but you will be okay. So, in a word, a high school is a work in progress.
High school only comes along once, so make the most of it because very quickly you’ll be shaking your principal’s (校长的) hand while they hand you your high school diploma (毕业证书).
28. What does the author stress about high school life in paragraph 2?
A. It has challenges ahead. B. It is full of competition.
C. It is a time for making friends. D. It offers chances to win popularity.
29. What helps high schoolers deal with troubles according to paragraph 3?
A. Regular exercise. B. Enough patience.
C. Right attitude to life. D. Support from school leaders.
30. What does the author want to tell new high schoolers in paragraph 4?
A. To avoid unfriendly people. B. To be prepared for what will happen.
C. To work hard to make progress. D. To try to protect those who love them.
31. Why does the author write the text?
A. To share his failures with new high schoolers.
B. To offer his suggestions to new high schoolers.
C. To tell new high schoolers how he managed stress.
D. To explain the importance of study to new high schoolers.
D
Conflict (冲突) between teenagers and parents happens for a lot of reasons. Sometimes conflict happens between teenagers and parents just because conflict happens between human beings anyway. Humans have different needs, different feelings, different opinions about what they want, and the relationship with people can be really difficult. However, teenagers can cause further conflict because of the hormonal (生理的) changes that are happening and the stage of life that they're in.
Teenagers and parents have different understanding about rules and at times they find it difficult to look into the future. So parents and teenagers will often experience conflict about many things. From chores, homework, whether teenagers speak respectfully or not, about what they're allowed to do - these are all the kinds of things that I hear teenagers and parents tell me about.
Before we think about rule boundaries (界线) for teenagers, we need to make sure that we have a really good relationship base. There's no point saying “From now on, you have to listen to me”: if you don't have a positive relationship with your teenager. We need to go back and make sure there is some degree of shared respect, and some degree of positive communication and enjoyment being together. you do that first, it means that rule boundaries are a lot easier to set up.
Often we're dealing with conflict on the fly. This is not the right time to be dealing with it. We really want parents and teenagers to sit down and think about the kinds of things that may happen in the house before the problems come. The more detailed your rule boundaries are for teenagers, the more likely it is that they are going to follow them. So this means we don't have rule boundaries like “Have the bathroom cleaned”. It needs to be “The floors mopped, nothing on the countertop and the mirrors cleaned by ten o'clock every Saturday”: Rule boundaries need to be written down, and set out ahead of time so the teenager knows exactly what's expected.
32. What's important to set up a rule boundary easily for teenagers?
A. Being strict from the start. B. Developing a good relationship with them first.
C. Saying"No" to their requirements. D. Avoiding close talks with them.
33. Which of the following rules are teenagers most likely to follow?
A. Doing some housework. B. Having a good reading habit.
C. Cleaning the bathroom. D. Finishing your homework by five.
34. What do the underlined words "on the fly" in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. In a hurry. B. On the plane. C. By oneself. D. Another day.
35. What's the best title for the text?
A. Growing Pains B. Teenage Problems
C. Parent-Child Conflict and Solutions D. Knowing the Conflict

【原文】M: Hi, I’m Chris from Florida. Last year, I moved to London, where I’m working for an American company. It’s been a big change, and there have been lots of things to get used to. For example, in the U.S. we drive on the right, while here in Britain I’ve had to get used to driving on the left.
What else? Well, the weather in Florida is usually great, so I’m used to lots of sunshine, and I used to sunbathe a lot. In London it rains so much. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it, and I always remember to take my umbrella with me.
Food in England is different, too. In America, I used to eat a lot of Mexican food. Here in England, people love Indian food, so I’m getting used to the different tastes. At the company where I work, it’s quite different. I used to work from 9 a.m. till 11 p.m. I hated working so late. Here in England, I start at 8:30 a.m., but finish at 5 p.m. On Friday evening English people like to go to the club with friends, but in America I used to go to the gym. I love sports.
Is there anything else? Some of the words are different. The subway is called the “underground” in London, and British people call the fall “autumn”.

【答案】32. B 33. D 34. A 35. C
【解析】

【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Before we think about rule boundaries (界线) for teenagers, we need to make sure that we have a really good relationship base. There's no point saying “From now on, you have to listen to me” (在我们考虑青少年的规则界限之前,我们需要确保我们有一个非常好的关系基础。说“从现在开始,你必须听我的”是没有意义的)”可知,家长与孩子后期建立规则界限的关键是跟孩子有良好的关系基石。故选B。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The more detailed your rule boundaries are for teenagers, the more likely it is that they are going to follow them. (你为青少年制定的规则越详细,他们就越有可能遵守这些规则。)”可知 D选项“5点前完成作业。”规则最详细,故选D。
【34题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线词后“This is not the right time to be dealing with it. Were ally want parents and teenagers to sit down and think about the kinds of things that may happen in the house before the problems come. (现在不是处理这件事的时候。我们希望父母和青少年在问题出现之前坐下来想想家里可能发生的事情。)”可推断上文意思是我们经常在匆忙中处理冲突,所以画线词意思是“匆忙地”,和In a hurry的意思最为接近。故选A。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其第一段“Conflict (冲突) between teenagers and parents happens for a lot of reasons. (青少年和父母之间发生冲突的原因有很多。有时候青少年和父母之间会发生冲突,因为人类之间总是会发生冲突。人类有不同的需求,不同的感受,对自己想要的东西有不同的看法,与人的关系真的很困难。然而,由于正在发生的荷尔蒙变化和他们所处的人生阶段,青少年可能会引发进一步的冲突。)”可知文章主要讲述青少年和父母之间发生的冲突及解决方案。故选C。
