20. What formatting rule is mentioned for the essay?
A. Use Comic Sans font.
B. List references in the order used.
C. Use size 12 font for the main text.
B 19. A 20. C
I want to explain a few things about your essay.
First of all, the deadline for this essay is October the 18th. Not the 19th, not two days later because your dog was ill or your computer broke — the 18th. If it’s late, I won’t mark it. I won’t even read it-you’ll fail the assignment! So, please hand it in on time.
You can email me the essays. I’ll reply to say I’ve got it. If I don’t reply within a day, it might mean I didn’t get it, so please email me again to make sure. You can also bring a paper copy of the essay to my office, but let’s be kind to the trees, OK? Email is better for the trees and for me.
Don’t forget that you must reference every idea or quote you use that isn’t your own idea. And the last page of your essay should be a list of all the books you used, in alphabetical order, not in the order you used them!
And lastly, make it easy for me to read! That means using a clear font. Arial is best, but Times New Roman is fine too. Not Comic Sans please! Size 12 font for the essay, and size 14 for the titles and subheadings. And use page numbers. Any questions?

When Paul Cotter’s father, Richard, was 52, he was fired from a large printing company after working there for over 30 years. Before, Richard Cotter was known for his sharp mind. Now, he found it too difficult to deal with the slightest bit of pressure. The next few years, he lost job from job. Everyone assumed it was a crisis of confidence. No one suspected the underlying reason: cognitive decline due to early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Then, when Richard Cotter was 58, he was formally diagnosed (诊断) with Alzheimer’s. Paul Cotter recalls that his father was horrified by the diagnosis. “But I imagine he also felt some sense of relief,” Paul Cotter said. “Finally, there was an explanation for his decline. And in spite of it all, he still wanted to keep working.”
That’s where Paul Cotter’s unsung hero stepped in. It was the Hidden Brain team. When Cotter’s father applied for a job there, he disclosed (透露) his diagnosis and the limitations that came with it. But still the firm offered him the position — handling small tasks like making copies. “They gave him a paycheck, which made him feel needed and valued,” Cotter said. “But more than just a job, they gave him respect, dignity and a sense of purpose at a time when his life was falling apart.”
The disease continued to progress. Eventually, his father had difficulty keeping his balance, and one day, he fell off a small stepladder. It was clear that it was no longer safe for him to continue working. The company let Cotter’s parents know that with deep regret, it would have to let his father go. On his father’s final day on the job, his colleagues threw him a goodbye party to thank him for his service.
“What a beautiful, remarkable gesture that was,” Cotter said. Cotter’s three brothers and sister still talk about the company’s care for their father. They wish they could tell their father’s colleagues how much that generosity has meant to their family, all these years later.
24. What do we know about Richard from paragraph 1?
A. He used to be considered intelligent. B. He regained confidence in job-hunting.
C. He needed outside assistance to survive. D. He was the oldest worker at the printing company.
25. Which words best describe Richard after his formal diagnosis?
A. Puzzled but energetic. B. Confident and ambitious.
C. Bored and annoyed. D. Scared but relieved.
26. How did the Hidden Brain help Richard?
A. By assigning manageable tasks. B. By offering a well-paid position.
C. By providing post-retirement instructions. D. By working out a new cure for Alzheimer’s.
27. What can we say about the impact of the Hidden Brain on Cotter’s family?
A. Predictable. B. Short-lived. C. Far-reaching. D. Insignificant.

China’s athletes were congratulated for their achievements and sportsmanship at the Paris Olympic Games. China finished second in the overall medal table, marking the country’s best performance at an overseas Olympic Games.
The rapid development of sports at the grass-roots level (基层水平) has laid a solid foundation for Chinese athletes’ wonderful performances on the world stage. More and more people, especially the youth, are participating in sports, expanding the talent pool for competitive sports. Besides, a modern sports industry system has been formed, supporting scientific training and the development of sports.
In 2023, there were 4.59 million gyms in China. As a result, about 38.5% of the population regularly participate in physical exercise. The country aims to raise that level to above 45% by 2035. However, despite the per capita area (人均面积) of public gyms in China reaching 2.89 square meters in 2023, a 10% increase from 2022, it has a big gap with developed countries-16 square meters in the United States and 19 square meters in Japan. Moreover, gyms managed by schools and governments, which account for over 60% of the country, are not open to the public during holidays.
The lack of gyms has become a shortcoming on the further development of mass sports in China. It is necessary for us to increase public gyms, not only by building new ones, but also by making the most of existing sports facilities. Furthermore, the development of gyms should also seek a balance in the types of sports offered. The top three public gyms in China are basketball courts, fitness trails and table tennis courts. The number of places for football, swimming, tennis, ice and snow sports is still very limited.
It is hoped that relevant departments can work together to create more space and opportunities to improve public service and guidance for people to exercise, and make the national fitness campaign a success.
28. What leads to the great performances of Chinese players?
A. The support of people. B. The progress of grass-roots sports.
C. The reward of competitions. D. The quality of athletes.
29. How does the writer explain the situation of sports facilities in China in Para.3?
A. By listing data. B. By doing research.
C. By asking questions. D. By analyzing causes.
30. What is a disadvantage for sports development in China in the text?
A. Lack of public promotion. B. Less funds invested in sports.
C. Shortage of professional guidance. D. Imbalance in the variety of sports provided.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To improve the sports atmosphere in China.
B. To show what sports Chinese are interested in.
C. To praise the achievements of Chinese athletes.
D. To give some advice to increase the number of gyms.
B 29. A 30. D 31. D

D
Whether due to nature or nurture, I grew into a person who was a bit disconnected, which was good for a career in journalism but not for emotional availability or a joyous life. In truth, I was a practiced escape artist. If you tried to get close to me, I’d masterfully avoid eye contact by staring at your shoes and then excusing myself to keep a vitally important appointment with my dry cleaner.
Life has a way of testing you, though. I’m no extraordinary soul, but I am someone who grows.
I have learned something profound along the way. An open heart is essential to becoming a whole, kind, and wise person. But it is not enough. People need social skills: being curious about other people; disagreeing without harming relationships; revealing vulnerability at the right time; being a good listener; knowing how to ask for and offer forgiveness; knowing how to host a gathering where everyone feels welcomed; knowing how to see things from others’ point of view.
In any collection of humans, there are diminishers and there are illuminators. Diminishers are self-absorbed; they shrink others into insignificance. They stereotype (有刻板印象) and label. If they learn one fact about you, they spin it into a web of assumptions about your entire identity.
Illuminators, on the other hand, have a persistent curiosity about other people. They have been trained or have trained themselves in the skill of understanding others. They know how to ask the right questions at the right times —— so that they can see things, at least a bit, from others’ point of view. They radiate genuine care, making others feel seen, respected, and uplifted.
A warm-hearted person draws out the radiance in others, while a person who conveys formality can meet the same people and find them stiff and disconnected. “Attention,” writes psychiatrist Iain McGilchrist, “is a moral act —— it gives life to what it focuses on.”
32. What’s the benefit of being disconnected according to the author?
A. Helping to enjoy his life. B. Balancing his emotion state.
C. Promoting his career advancement. D. Contributing to making good friends.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Lessons the author gets from life.
B. Ways the author gets along with others
C. Situations where the author forgives others.
D. Occasions when the author shows weakness.
34. How does the author develop paragraphs 4 and 5?
A. By listing data. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons.
35. What is the author’s writing purpose of this text?
A. To teach us some important life skills.
B. To stress the moral act of human being.
C. To compare two different kinds of people.
D. To share with us unforgettable life experiences.
C 33. A 34. D 35. B

根据第一段“Whether due to nature or nurture, I grew into a person who was a bit disconnected, which was good for a career in journalism but not for emotional availability or a joyous life.(无论是天性还是后天培养,我成长为一个有点脱节的人,这对从事新闻工作有好处,但不利于情感投入或快乐生活)”可知,作者认为自己的疏离性格对他作为记者的行业来说是有帮助的。
故选A。
最终,引用权威观点将核心概念“Attention(关注)”明确界定为“a moral act(一种道德行为)”,并指出其核心作用——“it gives life to what it focuses on(它赋予其关注对象以生命)”。 To stress the moral act of human being(强调人的道德行为)是作者的写作目的。故选B。

B 37. D 38. F 39. C 40. G
前句“How do we stay motivated once we have committed ourselves to action?(一旦我们承诺采取行动,我们如何保持动力?)”
根据上文“Remember that you have already overcome other obstacles.(记住,你已经克服了其他障碍)”以及后文“Believing in your capacity for success is a brilliant motivator.(相信自己有能力取得成功是一个很好的激励因素)”可知,本句与相信自己有关,小标题中的self-belief和后句中的Believing in可对应到D选项相信自己和自己的能力。
根据后文“The first step to achieving a dream is to turn it into a series of goals. A long-term goal will be the ultimate dream —let’s say, setting up a new business. Short-term and medium-term goals will be the stages on the road to the final goal.(实现梦想的第一步是把它变成一系列的目标。一个长期的目标将是最终的梦想——比方说,建立一个新的企业。短期和中期目标将是通往最终目标的道路上的阶段)”提到实现梦想的第一步就是将终极梦想分解成若干小目标,可知本句与梦想有关,F选项中dreams对应后句的dream。故F选项“我们的梦通常有点不确定和不清楚”符合语境,故选F。
【39题详解】
根据上文“Choose to stay happy, to be contented, and motivated. Remember that happiness should not be a final goal.(选择保持快乐,满足,有动力。记住,快乐不应该是最终目标)”提到快乐不应该是你的终极目标,选项承接前句,说快乐应该是生活本该有的样子。选项中的It代指前句的happiness。故C选项“它一定是你的生活方式”符合语境,故选C。
【40题详解】
该段的小标题是“Keep your motives in mind(不忘初心)”结合上文“Periodically, it is good to step back and take a critical look at what you are doing and why. This will help you to see whether your motives are the same as they were at the start of your venture.(定期地退后一步,批判性地审视一下你在做什么以及为什么做,这是件好事。

Anthony finished carrying his boxes into a new apartment. Looking around the area, he was finally happy.
The past year had been tough after getting fired from his job right before Christmas. He found a job months later. Unfortunately that was when his landlord (房东) decided to sell his apartment. So he had to find a new home fast. Luckily, this place became available.
He stepped on something on the floor when he was cleaning up. It was a picture frame (相框). After turning it around, Anthony found that the picture showed an old woman sitting on a rocking chair. But the surprising part is that he recognized her.
That was a year ago when he still had his old job as a bus driver. He was finishing his bus route as an older lady got on the bus. That particular December night in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was cold. Snow was pouring, and Anthony wanted to get home quickly. Additionally, he had recently heard some news about budget cuts, and apparently, some people were about to get fired.
He was thinking about the negative issues when the woman’s bus card kept getting rejected. “Sir, I’m sorry. I left my wallet at home. May I pay you back soon? I’ll leave you my phone number. Please, it’s so cold,” the woman begged. “I’m sorry, lady. My bosses strictly prohibit that. Please exit,” Anthony said finally. The woman tried to explain her case again, but Anthony lost his temper, “GET OUT RIGHT NOW!” She almost cried but turned around and exited the bus.
The following morning, Anthony woke up full of guilt. The morning news said there was a massive snowstorm that night, and he wondered if the woman got home safely. Then, he received a phone call from his company, telling him he was fired.
Staring at the old woman’s photograph, Anthony found the guilt came back to him in full force. Believing the woman was the previous renter of his apartment, he decided to call his new landlord Jack and ask about her.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Jack said the lady was Helen Miller and gave Anthony her phone number.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“I appreciate your apology. But why do you call a year later?” Helen asked.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Jack said the lady was Helen Miller and gave Anthony her phone number. It took him a while to get up all his courage to dial the digits. “This is Helen Miller. Can I help you?” a woman replied. “My name is Anthony. I was the bus driver who kicked you out in the cold,” Anthony explained anxiously. “Oh, is it really you?” Helen responded, surprised but calm. “Yes. I’m so sorry. I’ve regretted it ever since,” Anthony admitted, his voice shaking.
“I appreciate your apology. But why do you call a year later?” Helen asked. “I found your picture frame today in your old apartment, and I got your phone number from Jack,” Anthony explained. Helen shared her story of that night, her walking home in the snow, and her illness that followed. Hearing Helen’s story, Anthony regretted his actions that day even more. He promised her never to do that to anyone again and would like to help her when necessary. Helen suggested, “The senior center needs help this weekend. Would you like to volunteer?”Anthony agreed without hesitation. He often visited Helen. Their interactions led to a monthly volunteering commitment and a growing friendship.

①回答:reply/respond
②解释:explain/account for
③建议:suggest/recommend

More and more people especially the youth, are participating in sports, expanding the talent pool for competitive sports.

Anthony finished carrying his boxes into a new apartment. Looking around the area, he was finally happy.
The past year had been tough after getting fired from his job right before Christmas. He found a job months later. Unfortunately, that was when his landlord (房东) decided to sell his apartment.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
