Johnny and his whole family live within a few blocks of one another. They kept in touch with Karen as the storm continued violently (猛烈地) outside, watching the water rising dangerously all around them. When Karen reported that the water in her house had reached her bottom, Johnny knew he had to take action.

He is obviously a strong swimmer, but the flood water was filled with dangerous materials. There was also a strong current, and he had to swim against it for most of his trip to Karen’s. As he made his way through the water, Johnny stopped periodically to snap selfies (自拍) to show his worried family that he was okay.
Johnny was racing against the clock He knew he only had a short period of time to get there before the water rose above Karen’s head. It took him 40 minutes to swim four blocks. The sound of Karen shouting inside was music to his ears!
“If it would’ve been 20 minutes later, she wouldn’t be here,” Johnny said. “She’s never been happier to see me.”
Karen is now safe, although she is in the hospital being treated for infections (感染) she got in the water. The family have all lost everything they owned, including their houses, but they’re grateful just to be here.

Finding trapped people quickly is often the difference between life and death in relief missions. New robot tech is coming to the rescue. Imagine you’re trapped in a collapsed building. Unable to move, you’re forced to wait. Finally, something looks through the crack (裂缝), and you find yourself face-to-face with... a robot?
We have to deal with our fair share of disasters on our little blue planet. These calamities can range from extreme weather events like hurricanes to other naturally occurring phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. There are times when people suffer from intentional injuries, even resulting in death. And for most wildfires, they are simply the unfortunate side effect of human activities. Regardless of the cause, for centuries, humans have set out on search-and-rescue missions to save those left in a disaster’s wake.
But in the past few decades, robots have taken an increasingly active role in these rescue efforts. They have battled their way through disasters. These mechanical rescuers can range from ground to sea to aerial (航空的) vehicles — including unmanned aerial vehicles that don’t just search through disaster areas for survivors, but provide exploration from above. Beyond that, scientists across the globe are building new, creative types of rescue robots.
Many projects still in development draw inspiration from the animal kingdom, mimicking (模仿) designs that nature has perfected to make machines that can move through difficult environments, from droids that look like snakes to a group of autonomous bees. And while many are still years away from being used in actual disasters.
8. Why did the writer use the situation of people being trapped in a collapsed building?
A. To tell people the real scene of the earthquakes.
B. To show how people are disappointed in disasters.
C. To stress the importance of waiting in disasters.
D. To introduce a new way of saving during disasters.
9. What does the underlined word “calamities” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Buildings. B. Failures. C. Missions. D. Disasters.
10. What is the advantage of the rescue robots?
A. They are able to increase very quickly in numbers.
B. They can carry out missions in different situations.
C. They would take the place of human completely.
D. They don’t have any side effects of human activities.
11. Where do the scientists get inspirations to make droids?
A. The various animals. B. The science fiction.
C. The personal imagination. D. The harsh environment.

The Qixi Festival, the Chinese Valentine’s Day that fell yesterday, was not only a disappointment for forgotten lovers, but also for businessmen left with empty pockets.
The cold welcome has caused experts to seriously worry that the lovers’ festival, marked for generations since the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), is dying out. Some have even called for government to make the festival a legal Chinese Lovers’ Day.
But the effectiveness of such a measure is in doubt, although efforts to preserve traditional festivals are worth high praise.
A growing number of traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, share the same fate of the Qixi Festival.
Young people are showing less interest in traditional culture as symbolized by these festivals. Even if all traditional festivals are finally made legal, the risk of them becoming purely formalized celebrations with little meaning is not reduced. If the younger generation fails to appreciate the cultural significance of these holidays, there is little that can be done.
Concern about the traditional holidays also reminds people of the growing influence of foreign cultures as the country opens wider to the outside world. With traditional festivals becoming less important and imports such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day gaining widespread popularity, the public including cultural professionals have tended to measure traditional Chinese festivals in economic terms.
Business rather than culture has begun to play a dominant (占主导地位的)role. More and more people are interested in how much money can be made during the holidays.
In fact, what makes traditional festivals unique and what keeps them alive is their cultural elements. After all, it is unique culture that contributes to the world’s diversity (多样性)with globalization.
12. What leads the experts to worry that the lovers’ festival is dying out?
A. The disappointment in both businessmen and lovers.
B. The popularity of Qixi Festival among the public.
C. The action to preserve culture and traditional festivals.
D. The failure to make traditional Chinese festivals legal.
13. What’s the author’s attitude to the effectiveness of the legalization of the Qixi Festival?
A. Positive. B. Unconcerned. C. Hopeful. D. Doubtful.
14. From Paragraph 5 we can learn that ________.
A. the legal traditional festivals ensure the meaningfulness of the celebrations
B. making the festivals legal can reduce the risk of their disappearance
C. preserving traditional festivals relies on youth’s valuing their cultural values
D. the formalized celebrations are thought more highly of by the young people
15. The writer’s purpose of writing the text is to ________.
A. review the effects of globalization on the world’s cultural diversity
B. inform the public of traditional Chinese festivals’ dying out
C. highlight the role of cultural elements in preserving traditional festivals
D. warn people against measuring traditional festivals in economic terms

Julie knew she was outgoing (外向的) and sometimes loud. With her bright red, curly (卷曲) hair and mismatched socks, Julie appeared a little frightening to the shy kids. She couldn’t help it! She loved school, her friends, and being the centre of attention. Julie’s mum said she attracted friends like fruit flies to apple juice.
Mrs. Diaz, the teacher, smiled and thanked Julie for sharing. Mrs. Diaz then introduced a new kid named Andy Collins. When he spoke, he was quiet and didn’t say much. Julie thought she had seen him at breakfast. He had been sitting alone and not eating. Mrs. Diaz then partnered him with Eric as his “buddy” for the day. After class, Julie had forgotten all about Andy. She played four square, swung across the monkey bars twice, and shot a hoop (铁环) that didn’t make the basket. “I love being back at school,” later thought Julie as she took her seat and got ready to work on maths.
At lunchtime, Julie noticed that Andy was sitting with Eric and his friends but not talking to anyone. “He looks lonely, ” thought Julie, as she ate up her pizza, drank her milk, and went outside to play hide-and-seek with a group that was already playing.
When the bell rang to go home for the day, Julie walked up to Mrs. Diaz and gave her a big hug. “Thank you for a great first day! ” Julie said.

They kept in touch with Karen as the storm continued violently (猛烈地) outside, watching the water rising dangerously all around them. When Karen reported that the water in her house had reached her bottom, Johnny knew he had to take action.
First, Johnny ensured his sons and their pets were taken care of. Then, he jumped out of a window and began to swim. Johnny used to work as a rescue swimmer.
Johnny was racing against the clock. He knew he only had a short period of time to get there before the water rose above Karen’s head.
4. Why did Karen refuse to leave her house when the hurricane came?
A. She missed one of her legs. B. She was too old to move.

5. What challenge did Johnny face while swimming to his mother?

【答案】8. D 9. D 10. B 11. A

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. C

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“But the effectiveness of such a measure is in doubt, although efforts to preserve traditional festivals are worth high praise.(尽管保护传统节日的努力值得高度赞扬,但这种措施的有效性仍值得怀疑)”可知,作者对立法保护七夕节的有效性持怀疑态度。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Young people are showing less interest in traditional culture as symbolized by these festivals. Even if all traditional festivals are finally made legal, the risk of them becoming purely formalized celebrations with little meaning is not reduced. If the younger generation fails to appreciate the cultural significance of these holidays, there is little that can be done.
根据全文内容,结合最后一段“In fact, what makes traditional festivals unique and what keeps them alive is their cultural elements. After all, it is unique culture that contributes to the world’s diversity (多样性) with globalization.(事实上,传统节日的独特之处在于它的文化元素。毕竟,正是这种独特的文化在全球化的进程中为世界的多样性做出了贡献)”可知,文章以七夕节为例说明通过立法保护传统节日的有效性令人怀疑,只有重视节日背后的文化意义才能有效保护它们,故本文目的旨在强调文化元素在保护传统节日中的作用。故选C。

“My name is Julie Hanson. I am excited to be back in school. I have two new cats, and you are all invited to see them after school!” Julie said to the 2nd grade class when it was her turn to introduce herself.
“I’ll see you tomorrow! ” Mrs. Diaz told her. She smiled to herself about her outgoing student.

【答案】 The next morning, Julie saw that Andy was by himself at breakfast again. She remembered how lonely he looked yesterday and decided to do something. She took her tray and walked over to Andy. “Hi, Andy! Mind if I sit here?” she asked with a big smile. Andy looked up, a bit surprised, but nodded shyly. Julie started chatting about all the fun things they could do at school, like playing on the playground and doing art projects. Andy listened, a small smile slowly forming on his face. She introduced Andy to her other friends, and they all greeted him warmly.
Julie smiled, feeling good helping Andy make friends. As the days went by, Andy became more and more comfortable in the class. He started participating in games and conversations. Julie was happy to see the change in Andy. One day, Andy even initiated a conversation with some other kids during recess. Julie felt a sense of pride. She realized that a simple act of kindness could make a big difference. From then on, Julie continued to be friendly and inclusive, always looking out for those who seemed lonely. And Andy was no longer the shy, lonely boy.
