B It’s a Saturday night, the kids are asleep and we have no plans. Before we fall into our routine and watch a movie, I try to talk my husband into playing a card game. Unconvinced, he continues tapping away on his phone. But just before disappearing into the social media rabbit hole, he has an idea. He looks over me and suggests, "Why don’t we try calling one of our friends?" I look at him with raised brows, as if his suggestion is somewhat ridiculous and perhaps even socially unacceptable. You can’t just call someone out of the blue now...right? But then I think again and realize that at one point in time, in the not so distant past, this was the norm. I spent my early teenage years connecting with friends through a phone that was connected to a wall. It wasn’t "smart", but it allowed me to keep in touch with the latest gossip and news. We would chat for hours, sometimes while I hid under my blanket in order to avoid the chance of being caught by my parents. I could even memorize the phone numbers of loved ones then. While I did own an address book-and there was always the White Pages, where you could look people up by their names-I had the contact details of special friends, first loves and family members committed to memory. I guess these days, they would be on my "Favorites" list in my smartphone. Today, many of my "favorite" people are followed from a distance through social media, and even they very rarely-if ever-would get an actual call from me. The birth announcement by my oldest friend is received through catching a well-defined bump into a photo that I scroll past. The news of a divorce from a couple whom I had considered my second parents when I was in middle school arrives after a photo of a woman led me on a quest for more gossip. Bits of such information, a collection of wonderful, exciting, shocking and also boring news, may have been a part of my digital feed for years. The idea of actually picking up the phone to reconnect with a long-lost friend is an intimidating one-even seeing the name of an old friend pop up in an incoming call can feel a little afraid. I ask my husband, "Who would we call?" After tossing around a few names, we agree on some potential candidates-people whose lives have taken them in different directions, but with whom we still share deep friendships. 24. How does the author feel about her husband’s suggestion at first? A. Surprised. B. Motivated. C. Nervous. D. Excited. 25. With the phone, the author’s teenage years was_____. A. difficult but interesting B. peaceful and meaningful C. pleasant and unforgettable D. inconvenient but enjoyable 26. In the following days, the couple may_____ A. share more of their private information with others B. contact more long-lost friends through social media C, have more personal communications with their friends through calling. D. add more friends’ names to the contact lists in their phones 27. What’s the purpose of the passage? A. To argue for the need of the contact of long-lost friends. B. To remind us to turn to phones to keep in touch with friends C. To tell us about one of her unforgettable experience. D. To persuade us to follow our friends through the social media. C The poet Lovelle Drachman once said, "blessed are the curious, for they shall have adventures.", which is certainly true of people with wanderlust. ’Wanderlust’ is derived from a German word meaning ’a love of hiking’ and now used to describe the burning desire to escape the everyday and explore the unfamiliar. Wanderlust is a common, but not universal experience. What makes some people catch that travel bug while others are apparently unaffected? One theory is to do with our genes. Scientific research has identified a variant of the DRD4 gene that affects sensitivity to dopamine( 多巴 胺 ), the neuro-transmitter often released in the brain when we do something we enjoy. Actually, it’s not that the 7R version of the DRD4 specifically creates a thirst for travel, but people with the 7R variant are less sensitive to that delicious dopamine hit. So simple things that bring other people pleasure, like a jog in the park or a cheeky chocolate treat, might not cut it for them, which makes those with the 7R type of the DRD4 gene more likely to be risk takers to get increased dopamine levels. That’s why DRD4-7R has been called the wanderlust gene. Other researches have also linked the same 7R variant to far riskier behaviors, such as addiction and offensive behavior. By comparison, the strong sudden desire to go travelling seems like the better end of the Theory of Evolution. But another theory looks at the psychology of living in our inter-connected human society, one in which we are constantly aware of what friends and social media influencers are doing and keep comparing ourselves to them in two distinct ways. Upwards social comparisons, comparing ourselves to those we see as more successful than us. And downward social comparisons, comparing ourselves to those we see as worse off than us. In the age of social media, it’s very easy to compare ourselves unfavorably with the idealized version. How can we compete with influencers, with their perfectly dark brown legs on neat and clean white sand, and their once in a lifetime sunsets over Machu Picchu? Whether the motivation to explore the world is genetic, psychological or something else, there are far more harmful hobbies than the desire to explore the world. Venturing outside your comfort zone, to learn about new cultures, meet people you might otherwise never have had the chance to meet, and finally, learn who you are in different situations. Sounds like a life well-lived. As the novelist Jack Kerouac said, "Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain." 28. The underlined phrase "catch that travel bug" in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to_____ A. be crazy about travelling B. be curious about travelling C. escape daily life by travelling D. experience common travelling 29. Why are people with the 7R type of the DRD4 gene more likely to have wanderlust? A. Because they are more fascinated by risks and unfamiliar things. B. Because the 7R variant cause them to be less sensitive to dopamine hit. C. Because they have comparatively higher level of dopamine than other people. D. Because the 7R variant, also called wanderlust gene, helps create a craving for travelling. 30. The author will probably agree to the statement that_____ A. a well-lived life doesn’t involve venturing outside comfortable zone B. the 7R variant is inevitably linked with some more risky behavior such as addiction C. people tend to forget their daily routine, but adventures really leave footprints in their hearts D. when people compare themselves with less successful ones, it may give rise to mixed feelings D A Bridge Linking Art and the Audience According to a 2018 report, people aged between 16 and 24 make up about 15 percent of the population but only 10 percent of museum-goers. Similarly, people aged over 35 go half as much as you would expect from their population size. We have reached the point of recognizing the disconnection between art and the audience but haven’t yet determined how to bridge the gap. Two answers to tackling this challenge lie in telling a greater diversity of art histories and communicating these stories in more accessible ways. In 2018, a radio program called Art Matters was started with the aim of discussing art from a pop-culture viewpoint with topics that would engage younger and more diverse audience. It offers an accessible pathway to art history with conversations on different topics. Art history is about storytelling; art content shines when there is an effort to bring audience along for the discussion. More traditional institutions are paying attention. Recently the Getty Museum issued a social-media challenge for people to recreate paintings using items they had at home. Users displayed incredible creativity, and the museum was flooded with submissions. This reaction proves that there is a potential desire for the audience to engage with art topics if the format is appealing. Since many people feel intimidated and think that there’s a base level of understanding required to join the conversation, the Getty initiative serves as a reminder that there are many pathways to engaging with it. Another result of the Getty challenge was the exposure given to a diversity of artworks. The famous opera singer Peter Brathwaite, for example, made scores of attractive recreations highlighting centuries of black paintings. His efforts opposed the idea that there were not many historical paintings of black figures. It is extremely important that we do a better job of showing the complex and diverse stories that are represented in art. Social media have offered a platform for people who have not traditionally had a seat at the table. Anyone can recognise a gap in the field and address it. Accounts have gathered tens of thousands of followers. They are the proof that there is hunger to hear these art histories, and these themes work brilliantly for museum programming. But there is only so much that can be done without the museums and galleries changing meaningfully from within. We need to see a better balance of these stories represented in permanent collections. We also need a much wider diversity of people and interests represented on board. Ensuring that art-and writing and talking about art-is able to continue on the rising generation of storytellers, inside and outside of institutions, getting the funding and support they need to paint a brighter picture for the part. 31. What challenge is the author trying to tackle? A. People doubt a great diversity of artworks. B. Fewer and fewer young people go to museums. C. Art appears too distant from common audience. D. Adult audience has a different understanding of art. 32. What does the underlined word "intimidated" in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Tired. B. Worried. C. Annoyed. D. Surprised. 33. In the author’s opinion, the museums and galleries should_____. A. make the art history stories accessible in a traditional way. B. change meaningfully for activities like the Getty challenge. C. limit the number of storytellers both in and out of institutions. D. improve the permanent collections by adding famous artworks. 34. We can conclude from the passage that common audience_____. A. lacks the channels to understand and talk about art history. B. prefers to view artworks and hear art stories on social media. C. feels satisfied with people and interests represented on board. D. refuses to engage with diverse art topics and art history stories. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Exploring Psychology Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Gaining a richer and deeper understanding of psychology can help people achieve insights into their own actions as well as a better understanding of other people. 35 One important benefit from a psychology major is that it teaches the student about the human mind and why people act in various manners. Not all psychology majors will become psychologists. 36 All people must interact with others whether it is at home or at a workplace. People respond to these interactions in a wide number of ways. For instance, the person may not know why he or she is bothered by a specific action at work. However, the person who has studied psychology has an obvious advantage in this area. Psychology also offers the individual insight into himself or herself. As the person learns about the human mind, how it works and why people behave in specific manners, the person may also begin to recognize both harmful and helpful thought patterns in himself or herself. This may lead the person to an increased level of self-awareness. 37 It also shows the person where he or she possesses strength and crucial skills for the modern world. Individuals who are more self-aware are more likely to accomplish their goals and dreams. 38 A person may enter a vast field where psychologists and those trained in psychology work. These areas include industrial psychology, school psychology, private practice, organizational behavioral fields, law enforcement and virtually every other field. 39 As stated, there are a number of career opportunities from which a psychology major may choose. A. Self-awareness is a vital skill for any person to have. B. It shows the individual what areas the person needs to strengthen. C. As a result, psychology becomes an incredibly popular college major. D. A psychology major examines the science of human behavior and mental processes. E. All fields have the opportunity to benefit from the guidance that psychology can offer. F. The third reason why psychology is a useful major is that it opens up a wide range of career opportunities. G. However, all psychology majors will develop an increased awareness about human behavior and thought patterns. 第三部分书面表达(共两节,32分) 第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分) 阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。 Shared Services Need More Imagination Suppose you need to drill a hole in the wall to hang an item but do not own a power drill. You may regard it as expensive to buy a power drill and consider renting one. Sharing is the solution. The sharing industry is an emerging, highly flexible economic network that allows people to share resources, either free or for a fee. The important idea of the sharing industry is that people might only need an item for a relatively short period. The private part of shared services has been moving towards this area since the beginning of the 1980s, and then the public part has taken note of the benefits and continued for best practice. The United States and Australia among others have had shared services in government since the late 1990s. With the rise of the sharing industry, the best-known shared bikes and shared cars have got a lot of public attention. This kind of transportation is so environmentally-friendly that it is increasingly popular among people in many cities. Of course shared services don’t need to be limited to machines. The real pay-off in shared services probably lies in renting out smaller, less heavy items. For example, in today’s casual environment, you don’t need a tie unless you’re going to a wedding or a job interview. So some companies, would let you pick up a tie when you needed it and only when you needed it. Another example is an umbrella-sharing service. Since visitors don’t want to be carrying umbrellas all the way, it would be cheaper and easier to simply borrow an umbrella on one street corner and drop it off on another. Recently organizations that have centralized their IT functions have begun to take a close look at the technology services that their IT departments provide for customers, evaluating where it makes sense to provide technology components. E-mail and scanning (扫描) operations were obvious early candidates. Many organizations are now offering their document-intensive operations as a shared service. There is no doubt that people are calling for the expansion of shared services to more and more areas. 40.What is the sharing industry? 41.Why does shared transportation receive attention from people? 42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. Shared services are getting increasingly popular for their convenience, but there are still calls for expansion to wider areas because they are currently restricted to machines. 43. Please provide another example of shared services and explain your reason.
