Rodney read the headline in the local newspaper: “Flamingo Flocks to South.” A rare bird had found its way to his small California town. It was a flamingo, the report said, a real one—not like the plastic (塑料的) one planted in Rodney’s neighbor’s yard. The town didn’t even have a zoo, so this news was really exciting. But where was the bird?
Only one man in town claimed (声称) to have seen the wild bird, in a wetland park of town. He described the flamingo’s pink feathers and said it stood about 3 feet tall. He also said the flamingo did not seem sick or hurt.
Rodney thought the story sounded suspicious (怀疑的), so he decided to go on a flamingo-finding adventure. He also decided to take his best friend, Paul, with him. “If we find it,” Rodney said, “we can write a report on protecting wild animals.” The boys took their boots, binoculars, and a camera. They packed some peanut butter sandwiches, too. Then they set out for the wetlands with great excitement.
The weather, however, had other plans. The dirt (泥) road was muddy because of the rain. With their boots sinking deep into the mud, reaching almost to their knees, Rodney and Paul trudged through mud and many water plants. They searched carefully for quite a long time and they were all tired, but they never found the flamingo. Finally, the sun began to set, and a cold wind cut through the boys’ jackets and they had nothing left to eat. Rodney and Paul had no choice but to go back home.
As they turned onto Paul’s dark street, Paul’s mom was waiting outside, looking worried. Paul dragged his feet up the driveway slowly. His mother put her arm on his shoulder, and then the two went inside.
Rodney continued down the street toward his house, past his neighbour’s yard and that plastic pink flamingo. “Great,” Rodney thought, “now they have a pair.” Out of the corner of his eye, Rodney saw something move.
31. How may the boys feel on their way back home?
A. Sorry. B. Afraid. C. Excited. D. Calm.
32. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. There were no real flamingos in this small town.

C. Rodney put another flamingo in his neighbor’s yard.
D. Rodney found the flamingo they had been looking for.
33. Which can be the best title of the story?
A. A Report on Protecting Flamingos B. A Hunt for Wild Flamingos
C. Two Boys’ Difficult Trip D. Flamingos’ Journey to the South

A tornado is a tower of spinning air. Tornadoes can be very dangerous. The cause of tornadoes is not fully known. They form during thunderstorms. Inside the stormy clouds, warm air rises and cool air falls. The warm and cool air can begin to spin. This spinning air can push out of the storm clouds as a funnel. When the funnel of spinning air touches the ground, it becomes a tornado.
There are three levels of tornadoes. Weak tornadoes have wind speeds that are below 160km/h. They last for less than ten minutes. They cause small damage like fallen tree branches. Strong tornadoes have wind speeds that are between 177km/h and 330km/h and can last about twenty minutes. These tornadoes can cause quite a bit of damage and can push cars and trains over. The most dangerous tornadoes are called violent tornadoes. They can last for longer than an hour and have wind speeds that are higher than 330km/h. These deadly tornadoes can lift houses and cars into the air.
Tornadoes and cyclones are very different. Tornadoes form on land and cyclones form on the ocean. Tornadoes can be a few kilometres wide. The biggest cyclones can be hundreds of kilometres across.
Some people set up a safe room in a basement. They get a radio, water, sleeping bags and extra food. They also keep their house and garden clean by getting rid of dead trees or weak fences. If a tornado alert is given, get your saferoom ready. Do not go outside or near windows. Hide under a large bed or table. Get out of your trailer or car. If you are outside, find flat ground. Lie down and protect your neck and head with your arms. Once the tornado is over, turn on the radio. Avoid any damaged areas and do not go near any fallen power lines.
34. What can we learn about tornadoes?
A. Tornadoes usually happen on sunny and windy days.
