The librarians at Baton Rouge’s public libraries have always taken pride in answering every question, from recipes to football events. But after the catastrophic 2016 floods, the questions changed. People urgently needed to know how to contact FEMA, get help with bills, or find a homeless shelter. These needs went far beyond books; people required time, guidance, and practical help.
Recognizing this, the libraries partnered with Volunteers of America Greater Baton Rouge (VOAGBR), a nonprofit. In 2017, they launched a 90-day pilot program, stationing VOAGBR caseworkers in three library branches three nights a week.
Melissa Peeler, a worker of VOAGBR, initially wondered if anyone would approach her. That evening, only a homeless man seemed to notice her. When he finally asked what she was doing, she explained she was there to offer social service help. “I just need a place to sleep,” he said. Melissa provided a list of shelters and pointed out VOAGBR’s nearby drop-in center, which offered showers, computers, and even could assist with obtaining identity documents. “Really? I never knew that. Thanks! I’m glad you’re here,” he replied.
Word spread. Soon, people came to Melissa with complex needs—finding jobs, securing donated school supplies—questions traditional librarians couldn’t answer. “Before I talked to you, I didn’t know what to do,” one woman thanked her.
The program’s impact became undeniable. One day, a man made a beeline for Melissa, proudly showing a VOAGBR ID from the drop-in center. “I don’t know what I would have done without you guys!” he said.
The pilot program was renewed for a full year. In just six months, VOAGBR assisted 248 people in the libraries they might not have reached otherwise, expanding services to include programs like monthly free legal advice. People now depend on this presence.
Baton Rouge’s libraries hold books full of wisdom, but what the libraries and VOAGBR offer is a different kind of guidance—one of immediate compassion and community support, truly bringing the spirit of service to life.
4. Why did the libraries partner with VOAGBR?
A. To help find affordable housing. B. To meet people’s practical needs.
C. To answer book-related questions. D. To rescue people affected by the floods.
5. How was Melissa’s experience in the program?
A. Worrying. B. Disappointing. C. Moving. D. Rewarding.
6. Which word can best describe the program?
A. Conventional. B. Temporary. C. Fruitful. D. Time-consuming.
7. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To highlight the theme. B. To add some details. C. To describe a scene. D. To present new views.

A total of 52 giant panda fossils have been discovered in Shuanghe Cave in Suiyang county, Southwest China’s Guizhou province, making Shuanghe the site with the largest number of such fossils in the world, according to a Friday press conference on the results of the 24th International Cave Science Expedition.
The 52 fossils include six that were uncovered during a recent scientific expedition. “Many mammalian fossils have been discovered in Shuanghe Cave, among which the giant panda fossils are the most prominent,” said Wang Deyuan, an associate research fellow at the Guizhou Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Mountain Resources.
The fossils are evidence that giant pandas lived in Guizhou from 100,000 years ago to a few hundred years ago, forming a relatively continuous chronological sequence. Teeth analysis suggests most of these giant pandas were subadult or new adult individuals.
Numerous limb bones and skulls found at the site have also enabled researchers to study the evolutionary changes in the species’ body weight. Their study found that giant pandas reached their maximum body weight during the Middle Pleistocene, after which it began to decrease until it developed into its present level.
With a total length of 439.7 kilometers, Shuanghe Cave is the longest cave in Asia and the third-longest in the world. It has been the site of 24 international joint scientific expeditions since the late 1980s.
8. What makes Shuanghe Cave special in the world?
A. It’s the longest cave ever found. B. It has the most giant panda fossils.
C. It’s where pandas live today. D. It’s in Guizhou province.
9. How do scientists know pandas lived in Guizhou for a long time?
A. They found live pandas there.
B. The cave is very long.
C. Pandas are getting lighter.
D. The fossils are from 100,000 to a few hundred years ago.
10. What did scientists learn from studying panda bones?
A. Pandas were heaviest during the Middle Pleistocene.
B Pandas’ weight has stayed the same.
C. Pandas were lightest in the Middle Pleistocene.
D. All pandas found were very old.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A A cave in China is very long and has had many scientific visits.
B. 52 Fossil discoveries in a Chinese cave are about giant pandas’ history and evolution.
C. Giant pandas used to be much heavier in the past than they are today.
D. Scientists found both old and new giant panda fossils in the same cave.

An electronic retinal implant (视网膜植入) has improved vision in people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Scientists have used an eye implant to improve the vision of dozens of people left functionally blind by AMD. The implant which measures 2 millimetres by 2 millimetres, and is just 30 micrometres thick, is surgically put beneath the retina to replace the light-sensitive cells that have been lost to the disease.
The implant, termed PRIMA, is wireless, unlike previous retinal devices. And being photovoltaic (光电的), the light particles that activate it also provide the energy source for generating its electrical output. It is used in combination with glasses that contain a camera that captures images and changes them into patterns of invisible light that is sent to the retinal implant. The system, which allows users to zoom in and out on target objects, and adjust contrast and brightness, does take months of intensive training to use best.
In the current study, 38 individuals were treated at 17 clinical sites across 5 European countries, and 32 of the participants were tested a year after implantation. 26 of them had a clinically meaningful improvement in their vision, which, on average, meant being able to see two lines further down a standard eye test chart of letters. Overall, most participants’ vision came close to the resolution (分辨率) that PRIMA can achieve.
However, a questionnaire about users’ daily quality of life revealed no significant overall improvements. They said the results would be more convincing if the improvement had been shown by comparing it with a random treatment group. And users’ reading is “not fast, smooth reading”. The vision provided is also black and white, not colour.
Trial leader Frank Holz acknowledges the current system has limitations, and he expects future implants to be more effective. “With this first major breakthrough, it’s a starting point for further improvement,” he says, “And where this dead retina was a complete blind spot, vision was restored. Patients could read letters and words, and they could function in their daily life.”
12. What can be known about PRIMA according to the text?
A. It requires modest training for best results.
B. It allows glasses to send normal images to it.
C. It is both activated and powered by light particles.
D. It can restore normal vision by replacing lost cells.
13. What can be concluded from the study?
A. The implant proved instantly effective on the patients.
B. The 38 participants showed improved vision a year later.
C. The involved patients could see two lines on the eye chart.
D. Most patients’ vision reached the best level with the device.
14. Which of the following PRIMA limitations is not clearly mentioned?
A. Black-and-white vision. B. Frequent eye discomfort.
C. Slow and difficult reading. D. Unconvincing vision improvement.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A PRIMA: Its Progress and Limitations B. PRIMA: How It Improves Vision
C. PRIMA: A Training for AMD Blindness D. PRIMA: A New Life for AMD Patients

For a while, Anna and her mother Vera had been arguing about whether to adopt a dog after Anna turned twelve. Vera was hesitant about bringing a pet into their lives. This disagreement had cast a shadow over their relationship, making Anna feel unsure of her mother’s love.
On the morning of her twelfth birthday, Anna noticed something near their garden walls while having breakfast. It took her a moment to figure out what it was, but eventually, she realized it was a little dog. Anna wondered what to do, but ultimately decided to go out. She couldn’t just leave the dog alone!
Anna walked up to the dog and extended a hand. The dog took a few steps backward, but it didn’t seem to be terrified of her. He began to sniff (嗅) her hand just seconds later. Anna patted the dog’s head in response. The dog seemed comfortable with this gesture of affection and stood up to get closer to Anna.
Then, Anna saw a key underneath him. “What is that?” Anna wondered curiously. She picked it up and remembered one neighbor who told Anna that she was an expert of keys just the day before. She hurried to her neighbor’s house, taking the dog and the key. When Anna came with the dog in her arms, her neighbor wowed in amazement. “I found it, along with this key,” Anna carefully placed the key on her neighbor’s desk.
With a magnifying lens (放大镜), her neighbor examined the key and confidently told her, “I know what this key is for. You can get inside Velor Castle’s garden with this key. It has information carved in tiny letters on it.” Though unsure, Anna reasoned, “Perhaps the dog’s owners live there.”
The garden was nearby, so that’s where Anna headed. At the garden gate, the anxious girl put the key into the keyhole. As soon as it clicked, the door was unlocked.

Vera and many others were inside!

An electronic retinal implant (视网膜植入) has improved vision in people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Scientists have used an eye implant to improve the vision of dozens of people left functionally blind by AMD. The implant, which measures 2 millimetres by 2 millimetres, and is just 30 micrometres thick, is surgically put beneath the retina to replace the light-sensitive cells that have been lost to the disease.
15 What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. PRIMA: Its Progress and Limitations B. PRIMA: How It Improves Vision
C. PRIMA: A Training for AMD Blindness D. PRIMA: A New Life for AMD Patients

故填was introduced。
故填when。
故填a。
use sth. to do sth. 故填to make。
故填on。

Dear teachers and friends,
I’m Li Hua, and I’m delighted to introduce Chinese characters to you, one of the world’s most ancient and continuous writing systems.
Unlike English letters, each Chinese character is like a picture carrying its own meaning. Some characters even show the shape of the things they represent. They are not merely tools for communication but also show the richness of Chinese culture, reflecting our historical evolution and traditional modes of thought.
For those who want to learn Chinese characters, I recommend focusing on fundamental characters and practicing their structure patiently. Though it may appear challenging initially, with consistent effort and an appreciation for the cultural meaning behind them, you’ll discover both pleasure and value in the process.
Thank you!

Hearing Vera’s words, Anna realized who the dog’s owners would be.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version
Vera and many others were inside! They burst into cheers as Anna appeared, colorful balloons floating around the garden table filled with gifts. Vera rushed forward, her eyes shining with excitement. “Surprise, sweetheart!” she cried, hugging Anna tightly. She explained that the key and the little dog were both part of a carefully planned experience. The neighbor had helped design this “treasure hunt” to lead Anna here. Vera admitted that she wanted Anna to prove her readiness for pet care through this journey. The dog, a gentle golden puppy, touched Anna’s hand warmly as if recognizing his new friend.
Hearing Vera’s words, Anna realized who the dog’s owners would be. Tears of joy flooded her eyes as she understood everything, including the arguments, her mother’s hesitation, and now this perfect gift. “So... he’s truly ours?” Anna whispered, her voice trembling with hope. Vera nodded, smiling through her own tears. “Happy birthday, my responsible girl.” The puppy barked happily, waving its tail as Anna knelt to embrace him. In that moment, all doubts about her mother’s love disappeared, replaced by the warmth of the tight hug they shared. It was the best birthday Anna could ever imagine.
