B There I was, after 12 hours of travel, standing on Lexington Avenue and hoping for a New York miracle. I’d only been in Manhattan for an hour, and already was flagging down a taxi Late at night and shouting “Follow that cab!” Well, more accurately: “Follow that little dot on this tiny map.” Meaning the GPS-enabled dot moving around a screen as part of the Find My iPhone feature. The dot indicating that somewhere out there, in one of New York City’s other 13,000 taxi cabs, sat my daughter’s blue bag that she’d left behind, containing her diary school laptop, notebooks, iPhone and Air Pods she’d bought with her saved-up allowance. The daughter who a that very moment was curled up on the hotel bed regretting her thoughtlessness, in tears. I was a small-town dad in a huge, unfamiliar metropolis (大都市), with maybe half an idea of what I was doing, at best. But I couldn’t stand to see her crying. I had-to get that bag back. An explanation is in order at the airport terminal, we’d had to switch to another taxicab to get a ride into Manhattan. Our first taxi driver quoted us a fare higher than it should cost, and when I asked why, he immediately threw us out of his cab. We piled into the next waiting taxi. It wasn’t until getting to our hotel, an hour later, that we realized the first taxi driver had sped away with the bag inside. While I called 311 (非紧急情况电话), my wife remembered she’d set up tracking on our daughter’s phone in case of emergencies, and pulled up its map, excited to discover a little dot that refreshed every 15 seconds or so, traveling around the streets of midtown. Talking to the woman working 311, I casually remarked, “I’m half-tempted to get another cab and have them chase after this dot on the map.” “Well” she said “that’s probably what a New Yorker would do.” Challenge accepted. The first taxi driver then pulled over laughed at my wild goose chase, but the second said, “Yeah. Get in.” His name was Gani. And so began our three-hour hunt for the missing bag. 4. How did the author discover that his daughter’s bag was lost? A. They realized it when they got to the hotel. B. The daughter called and told him. C. He saw the taxi driver speeding away with the bag. D. They found the bag was missing when they got into the taxi. 5. How did the daughter feel when she found out her bag was lost? A. Indifferent. B. Cross. C. Desperate. D. Relieved. 6. What did the author consider doing after discovering the dot on the map? A. Continuing to call 311. B. Waiting for the dot to come to him. C. Finding another cab to pursue the dot. D. Giving up on looking for the lost item. 7. Which of the following would the author probably agree with? A People in big cities were more helpful than his hometown. B. Technology could sometimes make a difference. C. New York was a dangerous and scary city D. He was close to quitting tracking the bag’s location. C “Anxiety.” The very word invites discomfort. Its effects—shortness of breath, pounding heart, muscle tension—are outright upsetting. But, as a clinician, I find that we tend to miss out on many valuable opportunities presented by this human emotion. In and of itself, anxiety is not deadly, nor is it a disease. Quite the contrary: it is an indicator of brain and sensory health. Once we accept that it is a normal, though uncomfortable, part of life, we can use it to help us. We all know working out at the gym is hard. By nature, a “good workout” is uncomfortable, since it involves pushing our physical strength past what we can easily do. The sweet spot of exercise is always a somewhat challenging experience. Similarly, if you want to be emotionally stronger, you need to face some tension. For example, one effective treatment for fear is exposure therapy (疗法), which involves gradually encountering things that make one anxious, reducing fear over time. Humans are social creatures. When my patients learn to open up to their partners about their anxieties, they almost always report a greater sense of emotional closeness. Also, as international relationship expert Sue Johnson teaches, when we express our need for connection during challenging moments (e.g., “I’m having a hard time right now and could really use your support”), it creates greater connection and turns our anxiety into love. From time to time, we find ourselves at the end of our rope. Our responsibilities pile up, our resources break down, and we feel uncomfortably anxious—what we’re experiencing is called stress. Simply put, the demands placed upon us outweigh our available resources, just like a set of scales (天平) going out of balance. Focusing on work and pretending everything is OK only leads to disastrous results. Medical treatment for stress may function for a while, but it tends to make things worse in the long run. The only solution to deal with stress is to do the mathematics to balance the scales. 8. What does the author say about anxiety? A. It is an invitation to diseases. B It indicates stable mental health. C It costs us many valuable chances. D. It is a natural emotional expression. 9. Why does the author mention “good workout” in paragraph 2? A. To prove how exercise influences emotions. B. To suggest an effective way to challenge limits. C. To explain how anxiety builds emotional strength. D. To show a positive connection between mind and body. 10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The key to closeness is partners’ support. B. Sharing anxieties improves relationships. C. Humans are defined by their social nature. D. Expressing feelings keeps us off anxieties. 11. According to the last paragraph, how can we deal with stress? A. Devote more energy to our work. B. Increase resources available to us. C. Seek professional medical treatment. D. Master advanced mathematical skills. D Israeli company Watergen has produced a device that generates clean, drinkable water out of air. The device called GENNY is small enough to be used in a home or office but can generate up to 30 liters of water a day. The water that GENNY produces is not only clean enough to drink, it’s also often cleaner than tap water. GENNY takes air in and passes it through a filter (过滤器) to remove dust and dirt. The filter is powerful enough to work even in areas with high air pollution. The air then passes through a chamber where heating and cooling cause water vapor in the air to condense (凝结). This water is then passed through several more filters and minerals are added to make it taste better. Finally, the water is stored in a tank where it is continually circulated to keep it fresh. A larger model, called the GEN-350, can produce up to 900 liters of water per day. The GEN-350 is now being used in hospitals that previously did not have a reliable source of fresh, clean water. Watergen has also developed an emergency response vehicle(ERV)that can carry a GEN-350 unit wherever it is needed. In addition to the GEN-350, the ERV carries a portable generator that supplies electricity for the GEN-350. Watergen’s ERV is designed to bring water to people suffering from the effects of a serious earthquake, fire, flood or other situations. Once such an incident occurred in California in 2018. A fire started at a camp site and spread quickly over a wide area destroying many thousands of acres of trees and many homes. One of Watergen’s ERVs was driven there and it provided water for its citizens and rescue workers. Besides, they also provided clean safe water for the residents of Texas and Florida in the aftermath of the destruction caused by hurricane Harvey and Irma. 12. What can we know about Watergen’s devices? A. They’re available in different sizes. B. They’re made in numerous countries. C. They’re extremely hard to operate. D. They’re powerless in polluted areas. 13. The GENNY adds minerals to________. A. keep the water fresh and clean B. remove dust from the water C. improve the flavor of the water D. meet the water safety criteria 14. What can Watergen do using its ERV? A. Help rebuild the destroyed homes. B. Outperform its competitors. C. Supply electricity to local people. D. Respond to natural disasters. 15. What would be the best title for the text? A. GENNY: Water Generator via Filters B. GENNY: Water Production from Air C. GEN-350: Water Source for Hospitals D. GEN-350: Water Supplier to the Needy Is Breakfast Really the Most Important Meal of the Day? She had a passion for soccer that burned brighter than any other flame in her heart. However, Sara faced a big challenge — her legs were not as strong as her friends, requiring her to rely on crutches (拐杖) for support. Saras friends gathered on the soccer field every day, their laughter and shouts of excitement filling the air. She watched them with envy, longing to join in their games. But whenever she tried to play, the reality of her limitations would hit her hard, and she would feel a wave of disappointment. Despite this, Sara refused to let her dreams die. She loved soccer with all her heart, and she was determined not to give up. One day, the school announced an important soccer match. Sara's heart skipped a beat when she heard the news. She wanted to participate more than anything, but she knew that many kids would doubt her abilities because of her legs. Instead of giving up to their doubts, Sara chose to accept them as a source of strength. She began practising hard every day after school. Using her crutches, she kicked the ball with all her strength, gradually mastering the art of balancing herself. Sometimes, she would fall down, but each time, she would pick herself up with determination. Her face would be sweaty and dirty, but her eyes would shine with determination. Finally, the day arrived. Sara's team had made it to the final match, and she had been given a chance to play. The crowd roared with excitement as she took her position on the field. Everyone cheered her on, their voices a mix of encouragement and admiration. Although Sara couldn't run like the others, she used her skills and wisdom to pass the ball, her crutches becoming her secret weapon (武器) on the field. Talking to the woman working 311, I casually remarked, “I’m half-tempted to get another cab and have them chase after this dot on the map.” “Well,” she said “that’s probably what a New Yorker would do.” Challenge accepted. A. People in big cities were more helpful than his hometown. B. Technology could sometimes make a difference. C. New York was a dangerous and scary city D. He was close to quitting tracking the bag’s location. A 5. C 6. C 7. 根据第四段中的“It wasn’t until getting to our hotel, an hour later, that we realized the first taxi driver had sped away with the bag inside.(直到一小时后到达酒店,我们才意识到第一位出租车司机带着车里的包疾驰而去。)” 故选A项。 根据第三段中的“The daughter who at that very moment was curled up on the hotel bed regretting her thoughtlessness, in tears.(那一刻,女儿正蜷缩在酒店的床上,为自己的粗心大意懊悔不已,泪流满面。)” 根据第五段中的“Talking to the woman working 311, I casually remarked, “I’m half-tempted to get another cab and have them chase after this dot on the map.”(在和311热线的工作人员通话时,我随口说道:“我有点想再叫一辆出租车,让他们去追地图上的这个小点。”)” C “Anxiety.” The very word invites discomfort. By nature a “good workout” is uncomfortable, since it involves pushing our physical strength past what we can easily do. B. It indicates stable mental health. C. It costs us many valuable chances. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段中的“Quite the contrary: it is an indicator of brain and sensory health. Once we accept that it is a normal, though uncomfortable, part of life, we can use it to help us.(恰恰相反:它是大脑和感官健康的指标。一旦我们接受这是生活中正常的一部分,尽管不舒服,我们就可以用它来帮助我们。)”可知,焦虑是一种正常的情感表露。故选D。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“By nature, a ‘good workout’ is uncomfortable, since it involves pushing our physical strength past what we can easily do.(从本质上讲,‘好的锻炼’是不舒服的,因为它涉及到将我们的体力推过我们可以轻松完成的事情。)”和“Similarly, if you want to be emotionally stronger, you need to face some tension.(同样,如果你想在情感上更坚强,你需要面对一些紧张。)” 根据第三段“Humans are social creatures. When my patients learn to open up to their partners about their anxieties, they almost always report a greater sense of emotional closeness. Also, as international relationship expert Sue Johnson teaches, when we express our need for connection during challenging moments (e.g., ‘I’m having a hard time right now and could really use your support’), it creates greater connection and turns our anxiety into love.(人类是社会生物。当我的病人学会向他们的伴侣敞开心扉表达他们的焦虑时,他们几乎总是报告说有更大的情感亲密感。此外,正如国际关系专家Sue Johnson所教导的那样,当我们在充满挑战的时刻表达我们对联系的需求时(例如,‘我现在很难过,真的需要你的支持’),这会产生更大的联系,并将我们的焦虑转化为爱。)”可推出,本段主要讲述了分享焦虑有助于改善人际关系。故选B。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Simply put, the demands placed upon us outweigh our available resources, just like a set of scales (天平) going out of balance.(简单地说,对我们的要求超过了我们现有的资源,就像一组天平失去平衡一样。)”和“The only solution to deal with stress is to do the mathematics to balance the scales.(处理压力的唯一解决方案是通过数学来平衡天平。)” B。 D Israeli company Watergen has produced a device that generates clean, drinkable water out of air. GEN-350: Water Supplier to the Needy 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. For them, it is a marketing strategy.____20____. It’s hard to say whether or not breakfast has any amazing health benefits. What we do know is that breakfast’s greatest importance is undeserved, given the current scientific literature available. In this case, the simplest advice might be the best. Just listen to your own body and do whatever works best for you. A. Flooding studies B. Misleading language C. But what really happens when we don’t eat breakfast D. But is breakfast’s top spot among three meals deserved E. Most of the headlines claim to be based on the results on scientific studies F. Their businesses depend on people’s believing that breakfast means ready-to-eat cereal G. They aren’t actually testing what would happen if we were to change our breakfast behavior 【答案】16. D 17. E 18. B 19. G 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“Breakfast has been made out to be one of the most important meals of the day. It’s considered a serious mistake to skip it. And we’ll even go so far as to shame people for doing so. (早餐被认为是一天中最重要的一餐。跳过它被认为是一个严重的错误。我们甚至会让这样做的人感到羞耻)”以及下一段中“There’s news about how breakfast is vital for our health and other news about how it’s not. (有新闻说早餐对我们的健康至关重要,也有新闻说它不是)”可知,上文提到了人们认为吃早餐很重要,后文则提到关于早餐是否真的是至关重要的怀疑,可见本句与上文构成转折,说明人们有时会怀疑早餐是否真的那么重要。故D选项“But is breakfast’s top spot among three meals deserved (但是早餐在三顿饭中排名第一是实至名归的吗)”能承上启下,符合语境。故选D。 【17题详解】 根据上文“There’s news about how breakfast is vital for our health and other news about how it’s not. (有新闻说早餐对我们的健康至关重要,也有新闻说它不是)”可知,上文提到了一些关于吃早餐的新闻,故本句承接上文继续说明这些新闻的情况,故E选项“Most of the headlines claim to be based on the results on scientific studies (大多数头条新闻都声称是基于科学研究的结果)”能承接上文,符合语境。E选项中headlines可与上文news相呼应。故选E。 【18题详解】 根据下文“One study group looked at the common claim that skipping breakfast causes weight gain. Their 2013 analysis found past studies used improper language which suggested a causal relationship between skipping breakfast and obesity. The relationship in some cases indeed may be more correlative (相互关联的) than cause-and-effect. 【19题详解】 根据上文“There’s a whole body of research that connects breakfast with weight loss. But the methods behind a lot of those studies don’t always hold up. (有大量的研究将早餐与减肥联系起来。但许多研究背后的方法并不总是站得住脚)”可知,这一句紧跟在指出许多关于早餐与减肥关系的研究方法并不总是站得住脚之后,强调这些研究并没有真正探究改变早餐习惯会对结果产生什么影响,故G选项“They aren’t actually testing what would happen if we were to change our breakfast behavior (他们实际上并没有测试如果我们改变早餐行为会发生什么)”能承接上文,符合语境。故选G。 【20题详解】 根据上文“The often quoted reports about the benefits of breakfast are mainly funded by breakfast cereal (早餐麦片) companies, such as Kelloggs or Quaker Oats. For them, it is a marketing strategy. (经常被引用的关于早餐益处的报告主要是由早餐麦片公司资助的,比如Kelloggs或Quaker Oats。对他们来说,这是一种营销策略)”可知,上文提到一些公司通过报道吃早餐的益处来进行营销,即让人们相信吃早餐有好处,从而促进他们的生意。故F选项“Their businesses depend on people’s believing that breakfast means ready-to-eat cereal (他们的生意依赖于人们认为早餐意味着即食麦片)”能承接上文,符合语境。 I was sure that I was to be killed.
