Many English learners like to write long sentences in their compositions (作文). They want to impress others with their vocabulary and mastery of grammar. 41 In a good sentence, every word should serve a purpose and appear in the right place.
42 "There is recently a lively, ongoing discussion among many university teachers and other experts who study human nature, during which arguments are being presented about what it means that so many young people who live in our society today are so interested in stories about superheroes."
43 Well, you're not alone if you can't. In one interview, only 25 percent of people understood it.
Now, compare it with this simpler sentence: “University teachers are discussing why young people like superhero stories.” See? 44
Here are some tips to help you avoid wordy sentences.
Tip 1: Use active verbs instead of passive ones.
Tip 2: Avoid wordy phrases. Instead of “as a matter of fact”, just use “in fact”.
Tip 3: 45 For example, instead of “Ann likes the book and her best friend Margot likes it too”, say “Both Ann and her best friend Margot enjoy the book.”
By following these tips, you can make your writing clearer and more enjoyable for your readers.
A. Put sentences together when possible.
B. It's much easier to understand and still shows the same meaning.
C. But remember, “wordy” sentences can stop us from communicating clearly.
D. Can you easily understand this 46 - word sentence?
E. Let's look at an example of a wordy sentence.
第二节:阅读下面 A、B、C 三篇材料,从所给的四个选项中选出能回答所提问题或完成所给句子的一个最佳答案。(共 10 小题,计 15 分)

Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for navigation (导航) and direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 meters and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert, so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It's like someone walking six kilometers through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth's magnetic field (磁场), while humans can't. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then come back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still an enigma. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes
caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.
52. Why does the writer mention "someone walking six kilometers through a dark forest"?
A. To compare the difficulty of the ants' journey.
B. To show how far humans can walk in the dark.
C. To explain why ants need to count their steps.
D. To show that humans are worse at navigation than ants.
53. The underlined word "enigma" in Paragraph 4 means "______".
A. mystery B. fact C. prediction D. result
54. What can we know from the passage?
A. All animals use the same special ability to find their way home.
B. The fish's ability to smell home water helps them find their way back.
C. Scientists fully understand how animals use magnetic fields for navigation.
D. The abilities animals have for finding directions are all learned after they are born.
55. What's the best title for this passage?

When Aasritha Duriseti saw her grandmother having a hard time opening a bottle cap, she wanted to find a solution. It became a part of her project for an eighth - grade class at Carson Middle School.
Her class subject was engineering, which is a field that includes inventing, designing, testing and building systems, processes and products to solve problems. Students were tasked with making changes to a product to make it easier for people with challenges to use in their lives.
To find a solution for her grandmother, Aasritha explored what kinds of bottle openers had already been made, and then she created her own. For the improved bottle opener design, Aasritha used a piece of wood shaped like a cellphone. Next, she put three holes in the wood. The holes were different sizes, so that they could match common bottle cap sizes. Each hole also had a layer of dried, sticky hot glue. The glue layer provided a firm grip (紧握) for the bottle caps. With a simple twisting (扭转) motion, her grandmother could open bottles without help.
Students like Aasritha used math, physics and tool skills to deal with challenges people face. They also learned about empathy. It is important in engineering because engineers need to put themselves in the shoes of the person using the product.
