Paraguay is a smaller country than Brazil and it doesn't need nearly as much electricity. In fact, Itaipu Dam produces far more electricity than the whole country of Paraguay can use!
So Paraguay earns money by 103 its excess(多余的) electricity to Brazil. This electricity helps light up Brazil's biggest city Sao Paulo.

Time to “Learn” Math
WHY DO SO MANY STUDENTS hate or fear math?
In my opinion, this has something to do with students’ role in Math classes. Students rarely think they are in the classroom to 105 the beauty of math. Instead, they think they are there to perform. From an early age, students realize math is different from other subjects. In many schools, math is more about answering questions than it is about 106 .
Educators (教育学家) know how to improve the situation. In perfect math-learning environments, students work on difficult but interesting problems. They try a new idea, 107 and then try another new idea. They receive positive messages about their unlimited potential. Students with a “growth” mindset (观念模式) believe their ability is not “fixed”. They know failure is a natural part of learning. These students perform at higher levels in math and in life. 108 , most students today don’t get the chance to see math as a “growth subject”. They have to work on closed questions. There is no room for failure. Many students finally say to themselves, “I’m not a math person”.
Furthermore, math looks more like a speed race than any other subject. Teachers usually take 109 from the first student who raises his or her hand. Math tests are timed. No wonder students who think slowly and deeply often hate or fear math.
Schools should encourage teachers to open up math. In this way, math becomes a learning subject, instead of a performance subject. Teachers should ask questions that have many 110 instead of closed questions. They should give students the chance to discuss different ideas. They should also encourage students to ask questions that have never been asked.
When teachers set students free, the beauty of math follows. More children will fall in love with this subject.

Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage. (选择最恰当的单词或词语完成短文)
Los Angeles, a beautiful city between mountains and the ocean, has always faced risks from natural disasters like wildfires. Recently, climate change has made these fires even worse. Scientists explain that extreme weather patterns—such as heavy rains followed by long droughts (干旱)—create 111 conditions for fires. The rains help plants grow wildly, and the droughts turn them into dry fuel. Strong Santa Ana winds then 112 the fire to spread rapidly.
Human activities also increase the danger. Many old houses are built with wood, a material that catches fire easily. Although environmental laws aim to protect nature, people are sometimes unwilling to remove the dry plants near their homes. Worse still, people continue building houses in risky foothill areas surrounded by bushes that are burnt 113 .
By January 16th, the wildfires had killed 25 people and destroyed over 12,000 buildings. The damage cost over $50 billion, making it the most expensive wildfire disaster in U.S. history. Thick smoke filled the air, forcing schools to close and leaving many locals 114 with difficulty. The fires also harmed wildlife and turned green forests into black wastelands. Rescue teams worked day and night, but the fire remained uncontrollable for weeks.
Experts say we need some preparation to prevent future disasters. 115 , building fireproof (防火的) houses using materials like metal or concrete (混凝土) is essential. Governments should support people to avoid building in high-risk zones and update city plans to create firebreaks. Clearing dry plants regularly and replanting fireproof trees can also help. Most importantly, this disaster teaches us that humans must learn to live in harmony (和谐) with 116 instead of refusing to pay attention to its power.
Though Los Angeles will always be a popular place to live, its story warns the world: getting used to climate change is not just important—it is necessary for survival.

An elderly British couple are so crazy about dogs that they have no less than 41 dogs in their three-bedroom home. Lynn Everett, 58, and her husband Tony, 67, spend all their time caring for their dogs.
They spend two hours a day preparing meals for their dogs. Walking the dogs is like a big army operation. Dog food, pet accessories (配饰) and vet bills costs them about $46,000 a year. But they love every minute they spend with their dogs, though it costs money and takes hard work.
“Feeding time takes two hours. There are 41 dinners to prepare and 41 bowls to wash after,” Lynn said. “I have to remember who eats what, as some have beef and the others have chicken. I have to be there when they’re eating to make sure they don’t argue. Some people want to be nurses; some want to work in offices. All I have ever wanted is to have lots of dogs.”
Tony is also a dog lover, but he isn’t as crazy about them as Lynn. After getting married, they got a dog together, and then one after another, until they finally had 41. He admits having 41 dogs is a bit too much and can cause problems between him and Lynn.
“We argue because I have one way of doing it and he has another,” Lynn added. The couple haven’t gone on holiday since their honeymoon 21 years ago, because they’ve got to care for the dogs. Lynn leaves the house only once a year to attend the popular Crufts Dog Show in Birmingham.
Even though Tony finds living with so many dogs difficult at times, he knows how much they mean to Lynn. “Lynn loves them like a mother loves her babies. When she has dogs around her, it’s a feeling like it completes her.” said Tony.

A new fleet of ocean-cleaning drones is being tested to remove plastic waste from the sea. These autonomous (自动的) devices use AI to detect and collect floating debris (碎片), helping to reduce the millions of tons of plastic polluting the oceans. The drones operate day and night, covering large areas more efficiently than human-led clean-up efforts.
Traditional clean-up methods involve ships and nets, which are slow, expensive, and often harm marine life. The drones, however, are designed to avoid wildlife while targeting only plastic waste. Early trials show they can collect up to 100 kilograms of debris per day, making them a promising solution for large-scale ocean clean-up.
One challenge is that strong ocean currents can push debris out of reach, making it harder for the drones to operate effectively. Dr. Hannah Lee, the project coordinator, says her team is improving the drones’ navigation systems to handle rough sea conditions. They are also developing ways to recycle the collected plastic into usable materials.
If successful, these drones could play a key role in restoring marine ecosystems and protecting sea life. This technology offers hope for a cleaner, healthier ocean in the future.
129.How do the drones identify plastic waste in the ocean?

“Hello! I said to myself today that if I did five handstands, it would be an excellent year, and I did!” Thus began the 41-volume (and counting) diary of my life. It was 1984 and I was 14, feeling my way through adolescence (青少年时期). Most of the diaries have lain unread since I wrote them. Yet every morning. I hold my pen and write up yesterday.
You pay more attention to the world when you know you’ll be writing it up. I recorded a pony-tailed metalworker from Canada who shared the same singers with me and a middle-aged woman in a waiting room who described to me her lively garden. I want to write about even the dullest day because the ordinary things of today will be tomorrow’s history.
The past still lives on in those pages, and I can feel it closing over me if I look back on them. Recently, I read every day of my university years. It was like reading a novel about someone else. I read of difficult situations I no longer recalled and of dramas whose endings I had forgotten. Long-lost friends danced to a Swedish pop group in my student room, and long-dead voices spoke again. When I closed the diary, I felt like I went into a different century, a different home and a different family, and surprised at the years that had brought me here.
It’s a weighty business recording a life, yet it has taught me not to take myself too seriously. When painful moments are written down, I can more easily let them go. Seeing life as a story with an unknown number of chapters to write is both exciting and frightening. I plan to record the days until I can no longer hold a pen. The only part of the story I’ll never get to write will be the ending.

Encouragement is necessary for humans to develop and work hard. It helps people keep going. Here is a story of a simple note of praise. This note helped many people understand the importance of giving praise to other people.

And, he was very nervous. He did not like speaking in front of people. But his speech was very important.
Robert gave his speech. He did a good job. But, he did not have the chance to hear what other people thought. Later that same day Robert looked into his mail box and found a small note there. The note simply said, “You did a great job today, Robert.” Robert was very surprised and happy to see the note. It made him feel very good. And, Robert believes that that small note helped him through the rest of his training. He felt like he was able to do a good job.
Now as a psychologist, he teaches the importance of giving praise to other people. He tells them the story of the simple note that he received. He tells them that the words on the note had power. Those words helped him to continue doing a good job. One day, a businessman, who had attended Robert’s lecture, decided to take Robert’s ideas to heart.
The more this businessman encouraged his workers, the happier they were. “The atmosphere in our company changed. We enjoyed working. I grew up in Morocco, and mastered English by watching 3-4 movies daily. My secret?
Follow your passions. I loved American indie dramas like Your Sister’s Sister. Start by asking: “What English movies interest me?” rather than “How do I learn English?”
Use subtitles (字幕) wisely. Begin with subtitles in your native language to enjoy the story. Changing to English subtitles too early might make you feel stressed.
Repeat cool phrases you hear. Mimicking (模仿) lines like “Here’s Johnny!” improved my pronunciation naturally.
Write reviews online. After watching, visit sites like Letterbox and share your thoughts in English. Focus on movies you strongly loved or hated—strong feelings help you write better.
Make movie nights regular. Aim for at least one film weekly. Watch anywhere—phone, laptop, or TV. Consistency matters most.
Watch with English speakers if possible. Discussing films together helps practice speaking. I made English-speaking friends through a journalism (新闻业) class—you can too!
Rewatch favorites. As a child, I repeatedly watched movies on TV channel MBC2. Multiple viewings can improve understanding of the language and content. Today, you can choose great films from streaming platforms. Focus on actors/ directors you like.
Remember: Learning should be fun. When you enjoy the process, English skills grow naturally. Movies taught me not just language, but also cultural knowledge and lifelong friendships. Start with films you genuinely love, and let the learning happen through enjoyment!

根据短文内容回答下列问题。
Trees play a special role in my life. I never picture the house without the trees. There was a row of poplars (杨树) in my first childhood home, but bark beetles (树皮甲虫) had taken their toll on (对……造成恶果) our once-lovely 18-metre-tall trees.
Out on the farm, my grandparents always cut a Christmas tree from the fields. They were always short and had needles that left scratch (划痕) marks on our arms. Those trees were a family tradition and I can still recall their smell all these years later.
A huge willow tree once stood in the backyard as well. The kids had a tree house in it for a long time. Other kids in the neighbourhood enjoyed it too. But the old willow rotted (腐烂) from the inside out and had to be taken down. The kids are in their 30s now, and they’re still upset about the willow. There’s a sadness to a fallen tree; to the sound it makes when it hits the ground.
My husband and I were working as newspaper photographers when the active volcano (火山) Mt. St. Helens exploded. Many nearby forests were completely destroyed by the effects of the explosion.
Trees tend to be symbols of strength and beauty. The death of a tree is a reminder of our own weaknesses. The trees returned to Mt. St. Helens—and they returned faster than the experts predicted. To all who had witnessed the devastation (毁灭), the regrowth was encouraging. Those small trees reminded us of the beauty of new beginnings.

Itaipu Dam brings money to the region in another way as well. As one of the engineering wonders of the modern world, Itaipu Dam has become a major 104 attraction.

Writing for your school newspaper can be a fun and meaningful experience. You can report on many different topics, like rule changes, sports results, or school events. There are so many stories to tell. While news articles and stories may seem 117 , they are written in very different ways.
When a journalist writes a news article, they usually put the most important facts in the first paragraph. The other paragraphs give more details. This is useful because if there is not enough space in the newspaper, the editor can 118 the last parts. That way, the main facts are still in the article.

A news article should give facts quickly and clearly. But you also need to make it interesting. Try to explain what happened at the event and how people felt. 120 , if you write about a school match, talk to the players or the coach and add photos if possible.
If your topic is something people feel differently about, try to include more than one 121 . You should not just write your own opinion. A journalist should help readers understand the full story and decide for themselves.

Robert Brooks is a psychologist (心理学家) now. He remembers the time when he was just a young man. He was in training to be a psychologist. He had to give a speech in front of a large group of people.
We began to encourage each other too,” said one of the workers. “People seemed happier. But, most important of all, a greater spirit of team work developed,” the businessman added.
