Just imagine this: your parents passed away and left you living with your only relative who you’d never met before. That’s exactly what happens to the character Pollyanna in the famous children’s novel Pollyanna.
11-year-old Pollyanna is sent by a charitable organization (慈善组织), Ladies’ Aid, to live with her only aunt Miss Polly after her parents die. Miss Polly is a very wealthy and strict woman who lives all by herself with just a maid (女佣), Nancy and a gardener, Tom. In fact, she is not very happy with the news that Pollyanna would be staying with her. But she thinks that it’s her duty to help her dead sister’s little child.
Pollyanna, on the other hand, is glad to stay with Aunt Polly as she is the only person she has as her family. By playing the Glad Game, she can always find something to be glad about in every situation. One Christmas, Pollyanna hopes for a doll as a present, but finds only a pair of crutches (拐杖) in the box. Making the game work, Pollyanna’s father taught her to look at the good side of things—in this case, to be glad about crutches because “we didn’t need to use them!”
Pollyanna brings cheer and laughter to everybody’s life around her, including the sick, the lonely, the old... Everything goes well—until one day something terrible happens that even Pollyanna doesn’t know how to feel glad anymore...
Pollyanna is a best-selling novel by Eleanor H. Porter that is now considered a classic of children’s literature (文学). It teaches readers to look at life in a positive (乐观的) way, and never give up.
3. What happened to Pollyanna before she moves to live with her aunt?

B. To explain Pollyanna’s Glad Game.
C. To show Pollyanna’s poor childhood.
5. Who was Pollyanna written by?
A Miss Polly. B. Ladies’ Aid C. Eleanor H. Porter.
6. What can we learn from Pollyanna?
A. Blood is thicker than water.
B. East, west, home is the best.
C. Be positive and never give up.

Have you ever heard of “Kapibala”? And what is Kapibala? It’s one of the hottest words on the Internet right now. In fact, it comes from the English word “capybara”. The capybara is a kind of animal from South America. They have heavy, round bodies and short heads with soft, dark fur (皮毛). Adult capybaras may grow to 130 cm, and weigh up to 65 kg. They are excellent swimmers and can hold their breath under water for up to five minutes.
Capybaras are seen as the friendliest animals in the world. They are very social. They live in family groups of around ten to twenty and have a unique (独特的) ability to get along with other species (物种) including humans. Capybaras only eat plants, which means they don’t hunt other animals. And of course they don’t create a threat to any other species. 第一节 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Recently, Alex experienced a new way of learning through an educational tour.
On September 22, Alex woke up early, filled with excitement. It was fall, the harvest (收获) season, and his school organized the trip “Celebrating the Harvest Festival” to a rice farm. They would learn how to harvest rice by hand that day.
As soon as they arrived there, they were greeted by the sight of beautiful green fields. Their guide, a kind and patient farmer, introduced the sickle (镰刀) and showed how to use it. “Take your sickle, bend down, hold the rice stems, and cut them at 15—25 centimetres above ground level,” the farmer said. Alex thought to himself, “This will be a piece of cake,” but he soon found out it was not as easy as it seemed. It took him ten minutes to learn the basic skills. “You’re doing great,” the farmer encouraged the students with a gentle smile. The students worked hard under the warm sun. Some of them did a good job, while others did not. Tim even accidentally cut his finger, but he bravely continued. Everyone tried their best, and there was a sense of achievement that grew stronger with each passing hour.
When Alex got back home in the evening, he was tired but satisfied. After taking a shower, he tasted the rice and he thought it was the most delicious food he’d ever had! Alex also learned a lot from this experience. He realized that the rice in our bowl came from a lot of hard work. And he understood the real meaning of “No sweat, no sweet.”

41. 例文
Labor—the Ladder to Personal Growth
Many people think labor just means hard work, but I see it as the ladder to personal growth.
First, labor helps develop practical life skills. For example, doing housework teaches me to cook simple meals and tidy up rooms. Then, it builds confidence: when I finish a task well, I feel proud of myself. These small achievements also encourage me to take on more challenges in daily life. What’s more, labor shapes a stronger character. When I face tiredness while gardening, I learn to stick to it.
In short, labor is not just work—it’s a way to grow better.
