I used to avoid talking to strangers as much as possible. Whenever I visited a restaurant alone, a book would always be my “shield” to 1 any unwanted interactions. On planes, silent earbuds were my go-to choice to stay away from small talk. To me, idle chatter felt not just difficult, but almost 2 — like a task I had to force myself through. I’d rather sit in silence than exchange words that meant nothing at all.
However, a recent article by writer Alexievich 3 my viewpoint. She wrote, “Sometimes I’m deeply interested in talking to an old woman in a village who hasn’t read Tolstoy or Dostoevsky, but who speaks so 4 . She sees the nature of things that are completely unclear to me. I sometimes talk to children who are very unusual. They have a different outlook on life.” Her words 5 a long-forgotten memory and made me realize I’d been closing myself off for no good reason.
I once traveled to New York City alone. I can’t recall the exact year or my 6 for the trip, but one detail stands out clearly: my airplane seatmate. I had my book closed on my lap, fingers already resting on the cover, 7 to open it the second the conversation started. But he was faster — he turned to me and asked about my destination. My first thought was to find a natural 8 to open my book and end the chat. 9 , I decided to give it a try, and soon noticed how knowledgeable he was. From our talk, I learned he took that same flight every week for work. He was warm and 10 , with no fake smiles or forced topics.
Our conversation lasted the entire flight — from takeoff to 11 at La Guardia Airport. I can’t even remember the specific things we talked about now. What I do remember is the 12 I felt; I truly enjoyed the time with him. The two-hour flight, which I’d expected to be boring, passed in a 13 . We were just two ordinary people, breaking the dullness of a long trip to build a short but 14 connection.
Thanks to Alexievich, I now understand that conversations with strangers can be deeply rewarding. Her words didn’t just remind me of the past — they gave me the 15 to open up more in the future.

I used to avoid talking to strangers as much as possible. Whenever I visited a restaurant alone, a book would always be my “shield” to 1 any unwanted interactions.
