Two British professionals, film producer James Eden and acupuncturist (针灸医师) Gerad Kite, have co-authored a new book, The Untapped Self, making ancient Chinese medical philosophy accessible to today’s anxious global audience. Their joint work began when Eden first visited Kite’s London clinic for stress relief, unknowingly starting a journey that would later lead to this joint project.
Kite, an experienced specialist with 35 years in the field, describes acupuncture as “one of China’s greatest cultural gifts”. His experience with acupuncture in the 1980s San Francisco changed his life. He left his previous career and went to study under J.R. Worsley, who first brought Chinese acupuncture to the West. Kite uses an approach called five-element acupuncture. This approach works by fixing imbalances in the body to bring back its natural state of balance, not just by dealing with the symptoms.
Since starling his London clinic in 1990, Kite has given about 50,000 treatments while teaching around 50 students each year. His new book shares ten patients’ stories showing how acupuncture’s philosophy helps people find calmer, more balanced lives. Co-author Eden brought his own special view — as a long-time meditation (冥想) enthusiast who spent six months at China’s Wudang Mountain learning tai chi and kung fu, which deepened his understanding of Chinese medicine.
Both authors feel deeply thankful for China’s medical tradition and value China’s work in connecting traditional wisdom with modern science. “By supporting research,” Kite says, “China shows how ancient wisdom can work alongside modem medicine.” They see their purpose as sharing this healing knowledge, shown by traditional Chinese medicine’s growing worldwide reach through acupuncture, herbs and related practices.
4. What is the book The Untapped Self about?
A. Health care. B. Scientific research.
C. Film production. D. Personal biography.
5. What can we learn about Kite according to the passage?
A. He taught 50 students in his London clinic.
B. He devoted much effort to spreading acupuncture.
C. He first experienced acupuncture with J.R. Worsley.
D. He spent six months learning tai chi and kung fu in China.
6. What is Kite’s attitude towards China’s medical tradition?
A Proud and confident. B. Interested but doubtful.
C. Respectful and grateful. D. Impressed but confused.
7. Which can best summarize the passage?
A. A popular book, long effect. B. An ancient wisdom, deep impact.
C. An acupuncture clinic, great value. D. A professional writer, good insight.

Over the last seven years, most states have banned texting by drivers, and public service campaigns have tried a wide range of methods to persuade people to put down their phones when they are behind the wheel.
Yet the problem, by just about any measure, appears to be getting worse. Americans are still texting while driving, as well as using social networks and taking photos. Road accidents, which had fallen for years, are now rising sharply.
That is partly because people are driving more, but Mark Rosekind, the chief of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said distracted(分心)driving was "only increasing, unfortunately."
"Big change requires big ideas." he said in a speech last month, referring broadly to the need to improve road safety. So to try to change a distinctly modern behavior, lawmakers and public health experts are reaching back to an old approach: They want to treat distracted driving like drunk driving.
An idea from lawmakers in New York is to give police officers a new device called the Textalyzer. It would work like this: An officer arriving at the scene of a crash could ask for the phones of the drivers and use the Textalyzer to check in the operating system for recent activity. The technology could determine whether a driver had just texted, emailed or done anything else that is not allowed under New York's hands-free driving laws.
"We need something on the books that can change people's behavior,” said Félix W. Ortiz, who pushed for the state's 2001 ban on hand-held devices by drivers. If the Textalyzer bill becomes law, he said, "people are going to be more afraid to put their hands on the cell phone."
8. Which of the following best describes the ban on drivers' texting in the US?
A. Ineffective. B. Unnecessary.
C. Inconsistent. D. Unfair.
9. What can the Textalyzer help a police officer find out?
A. Where a driver came from. B. Whether a driver used their phone.
C. How fast a driver was going. D. When a driver arrived at the scene.
10. What does the underlined word "something" in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Advice. B. Data. C. Tests. D. Laws.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. To Drive or Not to Drive? Think Before You Start
B. Texting and Driving? Watch Out for the Textalyzer
C. New York Banning Hand-Held Devices by Drivers.
D. The Next Generation Cell Phone: The Textalyzer.

Have you ever wondered what happens to that single-use plastic bottle after you place it in a recycling bin? Most people assume it’ll be recycled, sooner or later. Unfortunately, the reality is far more complex. More often than not, that bottle starts a long and tough global journey, frequently ending up in other countries.
Under ideal circumstances, it’s cleaned, sorted and broken down into small pieces to produce new items like packaging. If it is packaging itself that has been thrown, it’ll probably end up as a form of fuel. In other situations, however, it is shipped to landfills in developing regions, potentially polluting soil and water, endangering wildlife, and perhaps even finding its way back into your home through the global fish trade.
In his book Waste Wars, journalist Alexander Clapp follows rubbish, travelling to some of the world’s most unpleasant places. There, he documents villages buried under mountains of imported plastic, and areas where workers take apart electronic waste from developed nations to extract valuable metals. Through these accounts, he reveals the global trade in waste and various influences it brings. While some waste trades are beneficial-such as China’s past use of imported plastic as industrial raw materials, or Turkey’s change of scrap metal into highways and skyscrapers—many shipments contain non-recyclable materials, causing serious problems.
The Basel Convention, which came into effect in 1992, dealt with the shipment of dangerous waste but left plenty of loopholes (漏洞). Thus, many countries have been trying to stop waste imports ever since. In 2017, China, once one of the largest importers of plastic waste for recycling, banned such imports. Similar bans in Thailand and Indonesia went into effect this year.
Then, what is to be done?
There is no easy solution! Producers are required to take more responsibility for what they make. However, balancing environmental and economic goals remains constantly difficult, especially given varied national conditions. Greater global awareness and cooperation are therefore extremely important to tackle this pressing issue.
12. What can be inferred from the generally-believed way of plastic bottle recycling?
A. It is more idealistic than practical. B. It is far from complex and tough.
C. It lives up to people’s expectations. D. It reflects the actual process of recycling.
13 What is the BEST possible result for a recycled plastic bottle?
A. Buried in landfills. B. Used as factory fuel.
C. Turned into new packaging. D. Shipped to another country.
14. Why is Clapp’s book Waste Wars mentioned?
A. To criticize international waste shipment. B. To illustrate the global waste trade’s impacts.
C. To showcase recycling is seldom successful. D. To promote the economic benefits of waste.
15. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To promote the book Waste Wars by Alexander Clapp.
B. To appeal to the public to raise their environmental awareness.
C. To indicate how recycling systems work in different countries.
D. To reveal challenges and complexities of global waste recycling.

When Jaron Casillas was very young, his parents discovered that he saw the world a bit differently a Texas sunrise for example.
One morning, Jaron’s mom: was driving him to school beneath an especially spectacular Texas sunrise. She heard his little voice from the car seat behind her say, “Look, Mommy! Look at the beautiful green sunshine!” She turned to look at it. The rising sun was so beautiful, flooding the earth with warm and red light. However, Jaron’s mom was about to cry. “Oh dear, my poor boy,” she thought.
Without delay, the parents rushed Jaron to the hospital for a check- up, which turned out to be color blindness.
On that fateful day, Jaron’s parents were shocked to learn that their son was color blind — a condition that affects a person’s ability to see colors in the same way as others. There is no cure, but special glasses can help individuals like Jaron distinguish between different colors. Unfortunately, these glasses are often too expensive for most families to afford.
The parents were sad, but Jaron remained calm and even comforted his parents. He saw his condition as something special and decided to keep it a secret. However, his silence caused him to feel left out when others talked about colors.
One day, during a class discussion, the teacher, Christina Hayes, asked the students to share a secret about themselves. Working up his courage, Jaron revealed his condition to his classmates, explaining that he saw gray instead of colors like purple, green, and blue. When the teacher asked if there was anything that could help him, Jaron mentioned the special glasses, but noted that they were too expensive for his family.
Hearing Jaron’s words, the teacher fought back tears and praised the boy for his bravery The other students looked at Jaron with newfound understanding and empathy.

根据第三段“Since starling his London clinic in 1990, Kite has given about 50,000 treatments while teaching around 50 students each year. His new book shares ten patients, stories showing how acupuncture’s philosophy helps people find calmer, more balanced lives.(自1990年在伦敦开设诊所以来,凯特已经提供了约5万次治疗,同时每年教授约50名学生。他的新书分享了十个病人的故事,展示了针灸哲学如何帮助人们找到更平静、更平衡的生活)”可知,凯特为传播针灸付出了很多努力。故选B。

【7题详解】
主旨大意题。全文围绕中医针灸这一古老智慧,介绍其通过书籍传播、临床实践应用,以及与现代科学结合的发展,展现其深远影响。因此B选项“An ancient wisdom, deep impact.(古老智慧,深远影响)”最能概括文章主旨。故选B。
C
A 9. B 10. D 11. B
根据第一段中“Over the last seven years, most states have banned texting by drivers, and public service campaigns have tried a wide range of methods to persuade people to put down their phones when they are behind the wheel.”(在过去的七年里,大多数州都禁止司机发短信,公共服务活动也尝试了各种各样的方法来说服人们在开车时放下手机。)以及第二段中“Yet the problem, by just about any measure, appears to be getting worse.”(然而,无论以何种标准衡量,这个问题似乎都在恶化。) 故选A。
根据倒数第二段中“The technology could determine whether a driver had just texted, emailed or done anything else that is not allowed under New York's hands-free driving laws.”(这项技术可以确定司机是否发了短信、发了邮件,或者做了纽约免提驾驶法不允许其他事情。)
根据句中的“We need something on the books that can change people's behavior.”(我们需要一些能改变人们行为的东西,)可知,something是能够改变人们的行为的事情。根据下文的“If the Textalyzer bill becomes law, he said, "people are going to be more afraid to put their hands on the cell phone.”(他说,如果Textalyzer法案成为法律,“人们会更害怕拿起手机。)可知,人们的行为会改变的条件是当Textalyzer法案成为法律。受到法律的约束和惩罚,司机们才不会在开车的时候使用手机。故something指代的是法律。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。纵观全文,第一段和第二段阐述的是“虽然大多数州已经尝试了各种各样的方法来说服人们在开车时放下手机。可是问题却越来越严重”。第三段中“That is partly because people are driving more.”(部分原因是开车的人越来越多)可知,解释了该行为产生的部分原因。 Texting and Driving? Watch Out for the Textalyzer(发短信还是在开车?
D
13. What is the BEST possible result for a recycled plastic bottle?
A 13. C 14. B 15. D

many people与base之间是被动关系,“be based on”表示“基于……”,此处用过去分词短语作状语,省略be动词。故填based。
故填the。

主语Participants是复数,故填have met/have been meeting。
故填to enjoy。
故填where。
故填and。

One possible version:
Dear Amy,
I’m thrilled to hear you’re joining the Chinese Drama Knowledge Contest — and of course, I’d be happy to help!
To get started, I suggest focusing on the four major roles in traditional Chinese opera: Sheng, Dan, Jing, and Chou. Also, watching short clips of Peking Opera or reading simple summaries of classic plays like The Peony Pavilion will give you a good feel for the art form. If you’d like, we can meet after school this week to go over key points together!
Wish you great success in the contest — you’ve got both curiosity and talent, so I’m sure you’ll do wonderfully!
Yours,
Li Hua

People from all walks of life contributed generously, touched by Jaron’s bravery and the students’ kindness. In just a few weeks, they had raised enough money to buy the special glasses for Jaron.
