A new world record has been set for the world’s heaviest pumpkin. American teacher Travis Gienger won the 50th World Championship Pumpkin Weigh Off in Half Moon Bay, California. 1 Do you know pumpkins aren’t really vegetables? Here are four things you may not have known about pumpkins.
Pumpkins are fruit, not vegetables.
They may not be juicy like an apple, but since pumpkins grow from a flowering plant, they are actually a kind of fruit. 2 Other fruits commonly mistaken as vegetables include cucumbers and tomatoes.
Pumpkins are one of the oldest plants in the world.
3 The oldest pumpkin seeds(种子)ever found were discovered in Mexico and have dated back to around 7000 BCE. It is thought pumpkins came from North America and Central America before being spread across Europe and the rest of the world.
4 We all know that pumpkins are yellow or orange in color. However, they can also be green, red, white and blue. The reason why many pumpkins are orange is that they have the same thing that gives carrots orange color.
There are many different kinds of pumpkins.
You may only see two or three different kinds of pumpkins for sale at the supermarket. 5 These include large ones like the one grown by Mr Gienger, and small ones such as Baby Boos.
A.Pumpkin isn’t the only fruit to be mistaken for a vegetable.
B.Pumpkins aren’t always yellow or orange.
C.People have been growing pumpkins for thousands of years.
D.That’s because he grew a pumpkin weighing 1,247 kg.

Sometimes, when turning the pages of our textbooks, we get a paper cut. 1 Three scientists from the Technical University of Denmark found that 65-micrometre-thick paper is most likely to cut our skin(皮肤). They won the Physics Prize for this finding at the 2024 Pineapple of Science Award in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, on Nov 23.
2 They used papers from 30 to 220 micrometres and tested them on man-made fingers made from ballistic gel. Made with animal protein, ballistic gel has the toughness of human skin.
For thin paper, the scientists found it couldn’t cut the “fingers”—it just bent(弯曲). 3
When they tried the 65-micrometre-thick paper, the scientists found it cut the fingers the most, about once every five tries. The paper used for magazines such as Nature and Science is of a thickness(厚度)close to this. Common A4 printer paper is about 100 micrometres thick, which is much safer.
4 Pushing the paper straight down onto the fingers didn’t often result in a cut. Pushing the paper at a slanted angle(倾斜角度)resulted in more cuts.
According to the scientists, their findings could lead to safer paper products. 5 It can cut through apples and chicken.
A.Ouch! That paper is sharp.
B.The cutting angle also made a difference.
C.The scientists tested papers with different thicknesses.
D.They also created a cheap paper knife, the Paper machete.

E.Some pupils find what kind of paper is more likely to cut skin.
F.Did you know some papers are more“dangerous”than others?
G.And for thicker paper,it left a mark on the fingers but couldn’t break the “skin”.
