Doing chores is a common thing in many families, but how to let children do chores well? Here is some useful advice.
First, start with easy chores. Young children can help take out the rubbish or fold their own clothes. These small tasks are not hard for them, and they can finish them quickly. When children finish the chores, parents should say “thank you” or give them a smile. This makes children feel happy and want to do more.
Second, make a chore list with children. Write down what chores each child will do and when to finish them. For example, a child can sweep the floor every Monday and Wednesday. A clear list helps children know their duty.
Third, do chores together. Parents can clean the house with children on weekends. While doing chores, parents can teach children how to clean the table or organize toys. This not only makes chores fun but also helps children learn new skills.
Remember, don’t ask children to do too many chores. Too much work will make them feel tired and stressed. Let children do chores in a happy way, and they will grow into responsible people.

When I was in Grade 7, I always worried about what the day might bring. I would feel relaxed only when I knew the plan for the day. And if anything didn’t go as planned, I would go crazy.
My parents realized my problem soon. One night, they gave me an old calendar from my grandma. It had a page for each day and at the bottom of each page, there was a message reading like a prediction. My parents told me Grandma checked the message every day, and most of the messages came true. My parents said it would work for me too.
I placed the calendar next to my bed carefully and went to sleep. The next morning, I nervously read the day’s message—“An exciting day lies ahead of you.” I got out of bed, thinking what the message would have to do with my day.
As the morning classes ended, my classmates invited me to join in an English play. Normally I would refuse them. But I remembered Grandma’s message and I agreed. I had great fun in the role-play that afternoon. That night, I went to bed, excitedly thinking about what message Grandma would have for me the next morning.
And so it continued. Day in and day out, I would wake up and read the calendar’s message for the day. And I would try to make that message happen. Slowly, I changed and was becoming active. The calendar is the best gift I got in my life.

William lives in Quebec, Canada. In 2016, the 15-year-old boy said that he had discovered a lost Mayan (玛雅人的) city in Mexico.
He showed a great interest in Mayan culture at a young age. Many boys usually like spending their free time playing computer games, but William likes learning about Mayan culture. To his surprise, he noticed that people from other cultures liked building their cities near the water, while the Mayans liked building their cities in forests, in mountains or in other places far away from the water. Why did they make such choices? William wanted to find out the answer. After studying the locations of 117 known Mayan cities, he found out the connection between the cities and the stars. It seems the Mayans built their cities to match different constellations (星座).
William compared the known Mayan cities with 23 constellations. While studying the final constellation, he saw three stars but only two known cities. So he guessed there might be another city that people hadn’t found yet. With the help of the Canadian Space Agency, he believed he had found the lost Mayan city. However, not all scientists think so.
1.What easy chores can young children do?
2.What should parents do when children finish the chores?
3.How can parents help children know their responsibility?
4.When can parents clean the house with children?
5.Why shouldn’t parents ask children to do too many chores?

根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
1.When did the writer always feel worried?
2.Who did the calendar belong to?
3.How did the writer feel when she first read the message?
4.Did the writer refuse or accept her classmates’ invitation?

One scientist says that the so-called “lost Mayan city” is actually an abandoned (被遗弃的) corn field that wasn’t used many years ago.
1.What does William like while other boys like playing computer games?
2.Where did the Mayans like to build their cities?
3.What connection did William discover between the Mayan cities and the stars?
4.Why did William think there might be another city that people hadn’t found?
5.What do you like to do in your free time? Why?

Choosing a career (职业) isn’t always easy. 1
Don’t let other people decide what you should do.
Sometimes adults may want you to become a doctor, work in a bank, or be a teacher. Listen to them, but remember it’s your life and it’s your decision. 1

Some people choose their career simply because they think they’ll make a lot of money. OK, if that is what you want.
