Simple is the Best
Matt and Allie carried their sketch (草图) to the sign-up table. They couldn’t wait to start making the kite they’d designed (设计) for the High Flyer Competition.
Allie looked around and found many fantastic designs. “Look at their designs!” he said. “They are a lot better than ours. This looks like an airplane. Oh! That is a spaceship! But ours is a boring diamond.”
After signing up, Allie and Matt walked home with their heads down.
“I guess we stick to the diamond kite,” Matt said.
“What if we gave it a cool-looking tail?” Allie said, cheering up a little. Matt agreed.
They worked on their kite all weekend. It wasn’t special, except for the tail. Allie had dressed it up with beads (珠子) and tiny mirrors. It shone in the sunlight.
On the day of the competition, Allie and Matt carried their kite to the starting line. The rules were simple. The kite that flew the highest and longest could win. And there were two rounds.
The match started. Allie held the string (线) while Matt ran down the field with the kite. He lifted it into the air. It shook and fell to the ground. Round one was over for them. Matt took the kite and ran back to Allie. “It’s the tail. The beads and mirrors are too heavy!”
Matt dislodged the beads and mirrors. He finished just in time for the start of round two. As he ran with the kite, he could feel the wind picking it up. He let go and ran back to help Allie. They let out the string as far as it would go, right past the spaceship and the airplane. The kite stayed up until Matt and Allie were told they were the winners.
“I guess the looks don’t mean a thing in kite flying,” Allie said.
“Yeah,” Matt said. “What matters is how the kite flies, not how it looks!”
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。

A. It was creative and special. B. It was too heavy to fly high.
C. It was common and uninteresting. D. It was the best design in the competition.

A. By drawing pictures on it. B. By creating a shining tail.
C. By making it larger than others. D. By changing it into a special shape.
33. Why did their kite fall to the ground quickly at the first round?
A. Because it was broken. B. Because it was hit by others.
C. Because its tail was too heavy. D. Because its string was too short.
34. What does the underlined word “dislodged” in Paragraph 9 mean?
A. Got something secretly. B. Studied something carefully.
C. Returned something on time. D. Made something disappear.
35. What does the title of the text mean?

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第8段“Matt took the kite and ran back to Allie. ‘It’s the tail. The beads and mirrors are too heavy!’”可知,第一轮他们的风筝很快落地是因为尾巴上的珠子和镜子太重了。故选C。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第9段“As he ran with the kite, he could feel the wind picking it up. He let go and ran back to help Allie. They let out the string as far as it would go”可知,风筝飞起来了,之前因为尾巴太重落地,现在能飞起来,可推测是把尾巴上的珠子和镜子弄掉了。故选D。

The world is full of screens. They are on TVs computers and smartphones. Screens are at school, at home, and just about everywhere in between. The time people spend every day looking at screens is known as “screen time”. Most families have rules about how much time children can spend with screens. Why do they have rules? Are there good reasons to limit screen time?
In many ways, screens are helpful for communication and connecting with other people. Social media (社交媒体) and video calls allow people to be always in touch with one another. Screen time can also help people build new relationships. By sharing and commenting on videos, photos, games or music, people can meet others who have similar interests.
However, some adults are worried that young people spend too much time on screens and not enough time meeting people in real life. As a result, they may not properly understand feelings or develop strong relationships.
Many kinds of screen time may be good for students. Students may use screen time to develop their skills in creating music or videos. They may even learn skills such as coding (编程) computer programs. When students use their screen time to do research online, they may meet people who are different from them or ideas they have never thought about before.
However, some researchers think that screens change how the brain processes information. Some have linked (连接) screen time to lower test scores or less attention time.
In the future, scientists will continue studying the effects of screen time. Parents will likely continue to make rules limiting screen time. Plenty of good things can come from all this screen time, but it’s a good idea for people to pay attention to how much time in a day they spend looking at a screen. They should know how screen time influences their health, relationships, and learning.
36. How does the writer start the text?
A. By explaining the facts. B. By telling a story.
C. By listing numbers. D. By comparing differences.
37. Which group of screen-time activities would “coding” belong to?
A. Social media. B. Learning Skills.
C. Playing Games D. Researching online.
38. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Teachers. B. Researchers. C. Young people. D. Some adults.
39. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
40. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. What Is Screen Time? B. Screen Time and Learning.
C. Screen Time: Good or Bad? D. Screen Time and Social Life.

根据短文内容,判断正误正确“T”,错误“F”
Take a look at this year’s calendar, what do you see? Feb 29! It comes around only once every four years during a leap year (闰年), like this year. So, why do we need it?
It takes 365.25 days for Earth to go around the sun once. We call this a solar (太阳) year. However, our calendar year is only 365 days. The difference between the two numbers may seem small, but think of it over a long time. Imagine if we didn’t have leap years, in a few hundred years’ time, July would actually happen during the cold winter months. That’s why we have leap years. They help make our calendar more accurate (准确的).
Leap years usually happen every four years, but sometimes there are some rules. When a year is a century year, like 1900 or 2000, if the year is divisible (可整除的) by 100 and not divisible by 400, then it is not a leap year. So, 1900 was not a leap year, but 2000 was.
Not only Earth has leap years, but other planets do as well. On Mars, a year is 668 days, but it takes a bit longer, about 668.6 days, for Mars to go all the way around the sun. Because of this little longer time, Mars has more leap years than Earth does.
41. There are 366 days in a leap year. _____
42. We need leap years in order to match with the solar year. _____
43. If a century year is a leap year, it must be divisible by 100 and not by 400. _____
44. According to the text, Mars has fewer leap years than Earth. _____
45. The text may come from a weather report._____
【答案】41. T 42. T
43. F 44. F
45. F
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了闰年的来历和意义。
【41题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Take a look at this year’s calendar, what do you see? Feb 29! It comes around only once every four years during a leap year (闰年), like this year.”可知,今年是闰年,根据常识可知闰年一年有366天;题干表述正确。故填T。
【42题详解】
细节理解题。根据“We need leap years in order to match with the solar year.”
根据第三段“When a year is a century year, like 1900 or 2000, if the year is divisible (可整除的) by 100 and not divisible by 400, then it is not a leap year.”可知,世纪年(如1900、2000)必须能被400整除才是闰年。题干表述“必须能被100整除且不能被400”与原文矛盾,故错误。故填F。
【44题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Because of this little longer time, Mars has more leap years than Earth does.”
(E)

When I was in Grade 7 I always worried about what the day might bring. I would feel relaxed only when I knew the plan for the day. And if anything didn’t go as planned, I would go crazy.
My parents realized my problem soon. One night, they gave me an old calendar from my grandma. It had a page for each day and at the bottom of each page, there was a message reading like a prediction. My parents told me Grandma checked the message every day, and most of the messages came true. My parents said it would work for me too.
I placed the calendar next to my bed carefully and went to sleep. The next morning, I nervously read the day’s message—“An exciting day lies ahead of you.” I got out of bed, thinking what the message would have to do with my day.
As the morning classes ended, my classmates invited me to join in an English play. Normally I would refuse them. But I remembered Grandma’s message and I agreed. I had great fun in the role-play that afternoon. That night, I went to bed, excitedly thinking about what message Grandma would have for me the next morning.
And so it continued. Day in and day out, I would wake up and read the calendar’s message for the day. And I would try to make that message happen. Slowly, I changed and was becoming active. The calendar is the best gift I got in my life.

“I guess the looks don’t mean a thing in kite flying” Allie said.
“Yeah,” Matt said. “What matters is how the kite flies, not how it looks!”

The world is full of screens. They are on TVs, computers and smartphones.

When I was in Grade 7, I always worried about what the day might bring.
Day in and day out I would wake up and read the calendar’s message for the day. And I would try to make that message happen. Slowly, I changed and was becoming active. The calendar is the best gift I got in my life.
