Best Places to Visit in the UK
The United Kingdom has long been a favorite European tourist destination for many because of its beautiful countryside, historic cities, top museums and outstanding theaters. Here are some of the best places to visit in the UK.
Cambridge
Cambridge is a charming English city located on the River Cam just north of London. As the home to one of the world’s top universities, the Universities of Cambridge, it has all of the cultural and entertainment options you might expect from a college town.
Chester
Located on the River Dee in Cheshire, England, Chester is more than 200 years old, which means there is plenty of history, culture and architecture on hand lasting several centuries. The Roman and medieval (中世纪) walls around the city are one of Chester’s biggest tourist attractions.
Stonehenge
One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge consists of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones in southwest England. It is also home to some of the most important Neolithic and Bronze Age structures in the UK. It was not until 1600 BC that Stonehenge came to be completed.
Lake District
Located in northwest England, the Lake District is the second largest National Park in the UK. The main attractions are the lakes, mountains and hills carved by glacial erosion (冰川侵蚀) and providing dramatic and inspiring scenery. It is England’s famous destination for hiking and climbing.

Jane Goodall is a name deeply connected with wildlife protection. Her groundbreaking work, which began in 1960 in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park, completely changed how scientists view animal intelligence and what makes humans unique. Without a college degree at first, Goodall used great patience and an open mind to study chimpanzees. She didn’t see them just as animals, but as individuals with their own personalities, feelings, and social lives.
A key moment came when a chimp she named David Greybeard allowed her to watch him closely. She saw him change a twig by removing its leaves and use it to “fish” for termites (白蚁). This was a major discovery because, at that time, scientists believed only humans could make and use tools. This finding challenged the idea that humans were completely different from other animals. As the well-known anthropologist (人类学家) Louis Leakey said, it forced science to rethink the definition of “human.”
Goodall’s long-term observations led to strong personal connections with the chimps, especially a mother named Flo and her family. These relationships gave her deep insights into their family life and social behavior. Her unusual path — earning a PhD from Cambridge University without first getting a bachelor’s degree — showed her strong dedication. Knowing she needed to do more, she started the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) in 1977. This organization leads global protection efforts and runs youth programs like “Roots & Shoots,” while also supporting women in science.
Jane Goodall’s legacy (传承) goes far beyond her scientific discoveries. She showed the world that animals have complex emotions and intelligence, which helps people respect nature more. Even into her nineties, she continued to inspire millions to protect wildlife and their habitats. Through her life’s work, Goodall taught us that understanding and valuing other species is essential for the health of our planet and for our own humanity.
24. Why is Jane Goodall’s work called “groundbreaking”?
A. Changed views on animal intelligence. B. Proved all animals use tools.
C. Created new research methods. D. Showed women can be scientists.
25. How did Goodall discover chimpanzees using tools?
A. By reviewing existing theories. B. By conducting experiments.
C. By watching David Greybeard. D. By consulting local guides.
26. What does Goodall’s bond with Flo show?
A. Short-term studies are effective. B. Tool usage requires long observation.
C. Academic degrees ensure discovery. D. Emotional connection deepens research.
27. How does the text develop its main idea about Goodall?
A. By comparing different research methods. B. By moving from discovery to influence.
C. By listing life events in time order. D. By focusing on early African research.

A strong 7.9 earthquake hit central Myanmar on March 28,2025, causing major damage in the area. The earthquake was centered near Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city. The number of deaths has reached 2,719, with 4,521 people injured and many more still missing. The disaster unfolded in two phases: the first earthquake destroyed buildings, roads, and bridges, while aftershocks continued to cause problems.
The earthquake happened along the Sagaing Fault, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates (构造板块) meet. Over many years, pressure built up between the plates and finally caused this earthquake. However, Myanmar’s old buildings, especially traditional ones made of wood and mud, were not strong enough to withstand the earthquake, which made the situation even worse.
Countries around the world quickly sent help. China was one of the first to respond, sending rescue teams with medical supplies, shelter materials, and special equipment to find survivors. India, Russia, and Singapore also sent aid. The United Nations helped organize the aid efforts, showing that the world is united in helping Myanmar.
However, rescuers faced many challenges. Roads and bridges were destroyed, making it hard to get aid to remote villages. There were also power cuts and communication problems. Bad weather made things worse, as rain could cause floods and spread diseases. Additionally, ongoing conflicts (冲突) in northern Myanmar made it hard to get supplies to the affected areas, and hospitals in Mandalay were crowded with patients.
Despite the difficulties, there were also stories of hope. Local volunteers worked hard to rescue people trapped in the rubble. In Mandalay, a pregnant woman was rescued after being trapped for 50 hours. Farmers and students also adapted quickly, planting crops in temporary fields and attending classes in tents. The earthquake showed Myanmar’s weaknesses, but it also showed the strength of the people and the world’s support. As aftershocks continue, Myanmar’s people are determined to rebuild their lives and hope for a better future.
28. What do we know about the earthquake on March 28, 2025?
A. It is the strongest earthquake in history.
B. It caused minor damage to the old buildings.
C. The main quake destroyed many constructions.
D. Pressure built up between the plates in aftershocks.
29. Which of the following is NOT a reason for the difficulties in rescue efforts?
A. Negative government. B. Power failures.
C. Damaged roads. D. Communication problems.
30 Why does the author mention the story of a pregnant woman in the last paragraph?
A. To compare victims from different jobs.
B. To show the theme of hope and recovery.
C. To explain the difficulty of rescue efforts.
D. To give an example of the earthquake’s impact.
31. What's the author’s tone in writing the article?
A. Concerned. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Objective.

We know that reading is good for children and for adults as well. Now a new study suggests that just being around books has its benefits — even if you don’t read them a lot. A team of researchers in Australia finds that growing up in a home with a sizable library improves literacy (读写能力), number sense and even technological knowledge in later life.
The researchers were interested in what is called the “Radiation Effect”. “Radiation Effect” is a situation where children grow up around books, even though they don’t read them as much as their parents would like them to. But somehow books benefit them.
Joanna Sikora, a sociologist at the Australian National University, and her colleagues studied data collected for almost four years. The survey tested more than 160,000 adults from 31 different societies, and it included a question about how many books testers had in their homes during adolescence.
“We found that people who grew up around books had better literacy, number sense and digital problem-solving skills than people who had fewer books growing up but had similar education levels, similar jobs and even similar adult habits.” In fact, teens who only made it through high school but were raised in a bookish environment were successful as well in adulthood as college graduates who grew up in a house without books.
“So if we grow up in a house, in a home where parents enjoy books, where books are given as birthday presents and cherished and valued, this is something that becomes a part of our identity and gives us this lifelong influence to improve our reading and writing ability.” said Sikora.
So keep those shelves filled with books. Your kids will not only be grateful, they’ll be more likely to be able to spell grateful correctly as well.
32. Which is the benefit for children being around books?
A. They will work with numbers well. B. They will have a big library at home.
C. They will fall in love with literature. D. They will form the habit of reading a lot.
33. The “Radiation Effect” might work for ________.
A. a girl who doesn’t read books B. a girl who visits bookstores a lot
C. a boy who grows up without books D. a boy who receives higher education
34. What do we know from paragraph 4?
A. Children being around books can be successful in adulthood.
B. People being around books can solve real-life problems easily.
C. Teens, after graduating from high schools, can find better jobs.
D. College graduates raised without books are surely not successful.
35. Which might be the best title of the passage?
A. Radiation Effect: A New Sociological Theory B. Book Gifts: A Meaningful Present for Children
C. Home Libraries: A Hidden Key to Lifelong Skills D. Daily Reading: A Direct Path to Improved Literacy

Life in senior high schools can be exciting, but also tiring. ___36___ Therefore, it’s easy to forget things, especially in the morning when you’re still a bit sleepy. How can you reduce stress levels and make sure you leave home feeling unhurried and prepared? Here are some tips for creating a productive, focused and energizing morning routine.
Prepare the night before
The best way to ensure your morning runs smoothly is to prepare for it the night before. ___37___ Select books and check you have the essentials, like reading glasses. Lay out your uniform. And if you take a packed lunch, check whether it’s ready.
___38___
Some people rise very easily, but others take more time to feel awake. Build extra time into your routine if you find mornings hard. If you have an alarm clock, try to get up as soon as it goes off. Doing something right away can help you feel awake. You could also do some stretches as you listen to a song.
Do essential tasks in order
There are a few things you need to do in the morning. To build a routine it can be helpful to do these in the same order each day. Examples are taking a shower, cleaning your teeth, dressing and checking your school bag. If you’re forgetful, have a list pinned up so you can check things off as you go. ___39___
Eat a good breakfast
Not everyone feels hungry when they wake, but this changes when you start moving — such as walking to school. After sleep, your body has been without food for a long time. The word “breakfast” reflects this — it’s a meal you use to “break” your “fast” (a fast is a period of time where you don’t eat). ___40___ Foods like bread or porridge provide energy. The capital of italy, it's a city that has always attracted me because of its culture. I'm particularly interested in its architecture since IT has examples from all major european styles of building. Besides, IT was the capital of the roman empire, so IT has a wonderful collection of public buildings from that time. What I think is great about rome is that many of the beautiful and historic buildings are still in use as galleries, public officers and even houses. They are not all locked up as museums. So it's really living history there, even though it's an expensive city to stay in. I'd like to go there for at least a month. As there's so much to see and do during my time there, i'd have to be careful that I didn't spend too much on roman food, plus i'd like to find a cheap hotel. IT would probably be in the central stora, the old center of the city, probably within walking distance of the river to air. Most visitors to rome would agree that this is a very special place, but for me, it's europe's most historic and romantic city. Good morning, everyone.

30. Why does the author mention the story of a pregnant woman in the last paragraph?
A. To compare victims from different jobs.
B. To show the theme of hope and recovery.
C. To explain the difficulty of rescue efforts.
D. To give an example of the earthquake’s impact.
31. What's the author’s tone in writing the article?
A. Concerned. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Objective.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. B 31. D

【答案】32. A 33. B 34. A 35. C

To build a routine, it can be helpful to do these in the same order each day.
Have a drink, too.
A. Wake yourself your way.
B. Early to bed and early to rise.
