With the seasons changing, now is the perfect time to start planning summer experiences at outdoor theatres in parks, city squares, woodlands and even the side of a cliff! We’ve put together a list of the best ones to visit across the UK.
Grosvenor Park, Chester
Every summer, Storyhouse theatre packs up their items and builds an entire amphitheatre (圆形剧场) in Grosvenor Park. This year’s programme sees an eclectic trio:
The Gangs of New York, The I’m portance of Being Earnest and The Wizard of Oz. I’m most excited by the first: a new adaptation written by Kieran Lynn and directed by John Young. I don’t think this story has ever been staged before and it seems like a wild pick for a summer outdoor show.
Minack Theatre, Cornwall
Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre. Seeing anything at all, backgrounded by the azure Cornish sea, will be an unforgettable experience. This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, and the less-known works of Shakespeare.
Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Highland Perthshire
Throughout most of the year, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s indoor concert hall and studio serve as their regular performance spaces. But this summer, you can see equally lavish productions at the amphitheatre, located in the woods and overlooking Ben-Y-Vrackie mountain. This year they’ll be staging Dido and Aeneas.
Shakespeare in the Squares, London
Is there anything more luxuriously summery than lazing down to your local square for a bit of Shakespeare and a picnic? These guys do what they say on the tin, travelling across the squares of London with a new Shakespeare production every year. This year will be All’s Well That Ends Well.
21. Which play fascinates the author most?
A. The Gangs of New York. B. The Importance of Being Earnest.
C. The Wizard of Oz. D. Little Shop of Horrors.
22. Where can you enjoy a play in the Pitlochry Festival Theatre this summer?
A. On the cliff. B. In the woods. C. At a concert hall. D. On city squares.
23. What is a proper choice for a Shakespeare fan?
A. Grosvenor Park and Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
B. Pitlochry Festival Theatre and Minack Theatre.
C. Minack Theatre and Shakespeare in the Squares.
D. Pitlochry Festival Theatre and Shakespeare in the Squares.

There is a beautiful island in Australia called Magnetic Island. Located on the Queensland coast, this island is known for its beaches and beauty, and recently, as a place of art and creativity thanks to a local artist named John Pavart.
Pavart finds coconut shells (椰子壳), paints them and then hides them all over the island for people to find. And they do. They find them and take them home, wherever in the world that may be.
Pavart’s artworks have become popular souvenirs (纪念品) for people visiting the area. Each coconut is hand-painted and carries the beautiful colors of the island, making it the perfect thing for tourists to bring back home from their trip. According to Euro Weekly News, Pavart has painted around 750 coconuts, each one with a unique design.
But how do people know about these pieces of art? And how do they go about finding them? Pavart fills his social media with posts where he puts photos and marks, and then people all over the world are encouraged to look around and try to find the coconuts. They enjoy doing so.
One day a few years ago, while out and about, Pavart found a coconut shell. He had his painting supplies with him and decided to make a painting. Instead of taking it home, Pavart put it back. He was happy to see someone else pick it up and take it.
Since then, he has enjoyed doing this for hundreds of tourists from all over the world. Leaving the coconuts by the beaches and other local areas, he continues creating these souvenirs and making tourists happy.

Millions of tourists travel to parks each year to enjoy the bright colors of fall — but ecologists say the familiar reds, oranges and yellows of fall foliage (叶子) are coming later in the season. “In New England, generally the fall foliage tends to peak in mid-October,” said Richard Primack, a professor of plant ecology. “But because of a warming climate, the peak of fall foliage is tending to move from kind of early to middle October to kind of middle to late October.”
Predicting precisely when the leaves will turn from green to red, orange and yellow in fall depends in part on the geographic area, the species and the amount of rainfall, and climate change can largely determine the timing. And leaves of trees with harmful insects will drop sooner, according to Christy Rollinson, a forest ecologist. “Bright colors are associated with a healthy tree, because some colors take energy for the tree to produce.”
Peak color used to last for about two weeks, but for certain species, that period might be becoming more condensed as higher temperatures continue late into the fall while days shorten at the same rate. So future generations might just have to be ready to travel at a moment’s notice to catch a peak period in parts of the country.
Such changes could affect the tourism industry surrounding leaf peeping (看), according to Sarah Blount, a researcher at the National Environmental Education Foundation. She underscored how important it is to try to improve peak timing predictions. “There’s so much money attached to it.” she said. “People want to buy a plane ticket to go somewhere and don’t want to find that it turns out that it’s too late and all the leaves are gone or it’s too early, so there is a lot of focus on trying to improve the information that we have about that.”
28. What do Richard’s words show?
A. The lateness of peak fall foliage.
B. The rareness of a trend.
C. The impacts of climate change.
D. The mass appeal of fall colors.
29. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. Visible signs of the coming of fall.
B. Prediction of fall foliage’s color change.
C. Factors in the timing of colorful fall foliage.
D. Determinants of the brightness of colors.
30. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “condensed” in paragraph 3?
A. Irregular. B. Important. C. Lengthy. D. Brief.
31. What does Sarah Blount imply?
A. The country relies heavily on tourism.
B. Predicting peak foliage precisely is vital.
C. It takes effort to protect the environment.
D. Scheduling leaf-peeping trips early is better.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. D 31. B

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍气候变暖导致秋叶变色高峰期推迟及缩短,进而影响相关旅游业的现象。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“But because of a warming climate, the peak of fall foliage is tending to move from kind of early to middle October to kind of middle to late October. (但由于气候变暖,秋叶的观赏高峰期正从10月上中旬推移到10月中下旬)”可知,Richard的话表明了气候变暖导致秋叶观赏高峰期推迟。故选A项。
【29题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中的“Predicting precisely when the leaves will turn from green to red, orange and yellow in fall depends in part on the geographic area, the species and the amount of rainfall, and climate change can largely determine the timing. (准确预测秋天树叶何时由绿变红、变橙、变黄,部分取决于地理位置、树种和降雨量,而气候变化在很大程度上决定了这个时间)”可知,该段主要讲述的是影响秋叶变色时间的各类因素。故选C项。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Peak color used to last for about two weeks, but for certain species, that period might be becoming more condensed as higher temperatures continue late into the fall while days shorten at the same rate. (过去秋叶最佳观赏期能持续约两周,但对于某些树种来说,随着秋季后期气温持续偏高,同时白昼时长以相同速率缩短,这个时期可能会变得更加……)”可知,condensed与前文的last for about two weeks形成对比,结合语境推测其含义为“缩短的、短暂的”,与brief含义最接近。故选D项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“She underscored how important it is to try to improve peak timing predictions. “There’s so much money attached to it.” she said. (她强调,努力改进观赏高峰期的预测是多么重要。“这其中涉及大量的资金。”她说)”可知,Sarah Blount暗示精准预测秋叶观赏高峰期至关重要。故选B项。

Scientists have revealed a powerful heart-boosting secret hidden in everyday foods. A significant new study from King's College London indicates that people who frequently eat foods rich in certain plant compounds, known as polyphenols (多酚), may experience better heart health over time. These beneficial compounds are commonly found in a variety of popular items, including tea, coffee, berries, nuts, whole grains, and olive oil. The research found that individuals following dietary patterns high in polyphenols had a lower predicted risk of developing heart disease.
The study, which tracked a large group of over 3,100 British adults for more than a decade, linked diets rich in polyphenols to healthier blood pressure and cholesterol levels. For the first time, researchers also assessed specific signs in urine that appear when the body processes these compounds. These biological markers showed that people with higher levels of polyphenol-related substances in their system tended to have lower cardiovascular risk scores and higher levels of “good” cholesterol. This objective evidence strengthened the connection between diet and heart health.
To better understand dietary patterns, the research team designed a new tool called the Polyphenol Dietary Score (PPS). This score reflects a person's intake of 20 common polyphenol-rich foods. Interestingly, the PPS demonstrated a stronger link to cardiovascular health than simply estimating total polyphenol intake. The team suggested this is because the PPS captures overall eating habits rather than focusing on single nutrients. This supports the idea that looking at the full diet provides a clearer picture of how these foods collectively contribute to long-term heart wellness.
Experts highlighted the practical importance of these findings. A senior professor noted that long-term adherence to a polyphenol-rich diet could greatly slow the natural increase in heart disease risk that comes with aging. She suggested that even small, consistent shifts towards foods like berries, tea, and nuts could help protect the heart over time. Another researcher added that this strategy is simple and effective because these plant compounds are widely available and easily integrated into daily meals, making it a practical approach for most people to support their heart health.
32. Why is the new Polyphenol Dietary Score (PPS) considered more effective?
A. It focuses on single nutrients.
B. It reflects overall eating patterns.
C. It is based on urine tests.
D. It includes more food types.
33. What does the study suggest about the relationship between aging and heart health?
A. Heart disease risk is impossible to change.
B. Diet has no effect on age-related risks.
C Polyphenols can completely stop aging.
D. A good diet may slow age-related risk increase.
34. What is a key health benefit associated with higher polyphenol intake?
A. Improved blood pressure and cholesterol.
B Guaranteed prevention of heart attacks.
C. Significant weight loss and better sleep.
D. Increased physical energy and strength.
35. What can be inferred from the experts’ perspectives?
A. Taking polyphenol supplements is the best choice.
B. The dietary advice is difficult for most people to follow.
C. Making small dietary changes can be a practical strategy.
D. Only people with existing heart problems should change their diet.
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. A 35. C

【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Interestingly, the PPS demonstrated a stronger link to cardiovascular health than simply estimating total polyphenol intake. The team suggested this is because the PPS captures overall eating habits rather than focusing on single nutrients.(有趣的是,与简单地估计总多酚摄入量相比,PPS与心血管健康的联系更为紧密。研究小组认为,这是因为PPS捕捉的是整体饮食习惯,而不是关注单一营养素)”可知,新的多酚饮食评分(PPS)被认为更有效是因为它反映了整体的饮食模式。故选B。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“A senior professor noted that long-term adherence to a polyphenol-rich diet could greatly slow the natural increase in heart disease risk that comes with aging.(一位资深教授指出,长期坚持富含多酚的饮食可以大大减缓随着年龄增长而自然增加的心脏病风险)”可知,研究表明良好的饮食可能会减缓与年龄相关的风险增加。故选D。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“The study, which tracked a large group of over 3,100 British adults for more than a decade, linked diets rich in polyphenols to healthier blood pressure and cholesterol levels.(这项研究对3100多名英国成年人进行了十多年的跟踪调查,发现富含多酚的饮食与更健康的血压和胆固醇水平有关)”可知,摄入更多多酚的一个关键健康益处是改善血压和胆固醇。故选A。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“She suggested that even small, consistent shifts towards foods like berries, tea, and nuts could help protect the heart over time. Another researcher added that this strategy is simple and effective because these plant compounds are widely available and easily integrated into daily meals, making it a practical approach for most people to support their heart health.(她建议,即使是小的、持续的转向浆果、茶和坚果等食物,随着时间的推移也有助于保护心脏。另一位研究人员补充说,这种策略简单有效,因为这些植物化合物广泛存在,很容易融入日常饮食,对大多数人来说是一种支持心脏健康的实用方法)”可知,从专家的观点可以推断出,做出小的饮食改变可以是一种实用的策略。故选C。

The school year was coming to a close, and the air was filled with anticipation for the upcoming annual school fair. Our class had eagerly decided to host a bake sale, with each student ready to contribute their favorite recipes.
Spirits were high. Every spare moment was devoted to perfecting the art of baking, from experimenting with different flavors to mastering the art of cake decorations. Our classroom became a hub of activity, filled with the sweet scent of freshly baked goods and the sound of laughter and chatter.
The day of the fair finally arrived, and our table was beautifully decorated with a mouthwatering baked goods. There were freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, warm and crispy, alongside homemade fruit pies. The attractive scent was irresistible, and it wasn’t long before a long line of students and parents formed, their eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
However, as the morning wore on, we couldn’t help but notice that the neighboring class’s booth (摊位) was appealing to a significantly larger crowd. There was a buzz of excitement surrounding their table, and it was clear that they were onto something special.
Among our class, a sense of healthy competition began to emerge. Sarah, our natural leader, suggested we step up our game. “We need to find out what they’re doing differently and improve our booth,” she said with determination. Out of curiosity, we sent our most inquisitive member, Mark, to investigate.
Soon, Mark returned with good news. “They’ve got a ‘Taste of the World’ theme going on over there,” Mark reported. “They’re serving up a variety of international desserts, and it’s quite the hit!”
We were intrigued by the idea and asked Mark for more details. He went on to explain that the students had gone the extra mile by dressing up in traditional costumes from the countries they were representing. “It’s like a cultural feast for the senses,” he added with enthusiasm.

D Scheduling leaf-peeping trips early is better.

C. Polyphenols can completely stop aging.
D. A good diet may slow age-related risk increase.
34. What is a key health benefit associated with higher polyphenol intake?
A. Improved blood pressure and cholesterol.
B. Guaranteed prevention of heart attacks.
