Many people love their pets like family. When they go to school or on vacation, they often worry about their furry friends at home. Is my dog hungry? Is my cat feeling bad? This is a common anxiety (焦虑) for pet owners. But now, technology (科技) has a new answer: smart pet products. These special tools are changing how people take care of their pets.
What can these smart products do? Imagine you are at school. With a smart camera, you can see your cat playing in the living room on your phone. A smart feeder can give your dog food at the same time every day, so it never gets too hungry. There are even self-cleaning litter boxes that do the dirty work for you. These tools sound like a dream for many pet owners. They can save a lot of time and make people feel more relaxed when they are away from home.
However, these tools are not always perfect. Sometimes, they can make big mistakes. One pet owner shared a scary story. He was on a business trip, and the smart feeder for his dog suddenly stopped working. His poor dog had no food all day. ________ A machine that is meant to help can sometimes create a bigger problem or even be unsafe. So, while these tools are helpful, we need to be careful with them.
In short, pet owners should use them very carefully. Smart pet products are a very new and interesting trend (趋势). They offer an easy way to care for our animal friends. For busy owners, they can be a fantastic help. But it is important to remember that they are just machines. Pet owners should choose them very carefully and always put their pet’s safety and happiness first.

A food chain is a way to show the relationships among living things in the nature. It shows the path the energy takes from the sun through producers and consumers to decomposers. Everything needs energy to live on.
A producer is a living thing that makes energy from the sun. It absorbs sunlight, turns it into energy and keeps it. A perfect example of a producer is a vegetable or fruit. These plants take in sunlight through their green leaves, produce energy, and keep it in the other parts of the plant, such as its fruit and flowers—what is most useful to consumers.
A consumer is a living thing in the food chain that eats producers or other consumers for energy. These consumers can be insects, animals and humans. Insects, like grasshoppers (蚱蜢), eat producers and take in their energy. Consumers can also eat other consumers. For example, consumers like lions and tigers often eat other animals below them in the food chain. In this way, energy can be passed to other consumers.
A decomposer is a living thing in the food chain that gets its energy from both consumers and producers by eating dead plants and animals. Ants and some other insects are good examples of decomposers. These living things eat dead plants and animals, take in the energy to live on and put new energy into the earth. Plants use the energy to make energy of their own to start the cycle again.
The food chain includes all living things on the earth and is difficult to understand. We can make an easy picture of the food chain by choosing just one group of living things. Here is an example of a simple food chain.
18.Which of the following living things may be a decomposer?
A.Butterflies. B.Bamboos. C.Cranes. D.Ants.
19.What does the word “absorb” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.制造 B.吸收 C.消耗 D.储存
20.Which of the following picture shows how the food chain works?
A. B.
C. D.
21.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Consumers are animals living on meat. B.Producers can only live on the sunlight.
C.Decomposers are dangerous to other life. D.Every living thing is important to the earth.

19.词句猜测题。根据文章第二段“It absorbs sunlight, turns it into energy and keeps it.”的语境,生产者将阳光转化为能量,可知“absorb”的含义是“吸收”,故选B。
20.推理判断题。根据“A producer is a living thing that makes energy from the sun.”,“A consumer is a living thing in the food chain that eats producers or other consumers for energy.”和“A decomposer is a living thing in the food chain that gets its energy from both consumers and producers by eating dead plants and animals.”可知,消费者从生产者中获取能量,分解者从消费者和生产者那里获取能量,第一张图符合题意。故选A。
21.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“The food chain includes all living things on the earth”可知,食物链涵盖地球上所有生物,每个生物都在能量循环中发挥作用,因此“每个生物对地球都很重要”的表述正确,故选D。
Most environmental pollution comes from humans and their inventions. The electric bulbs are thought to be one of the greatest human inventions of all time. However, too much of a good thing has started to influence (影响) the environment. Light pollution is influencing human health and wildlife behavior. There is a world-wide movement to reduce light pollution, and everyone can help.
Light pollution problem became especially serious when the World Map of Night Sky Brightness was published in 2016. Large areas of North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia are glowing with light, while only Siberia, the Sahara, and the Amazon are in total darkness.
Artificial (人造的) light can wreak havoc on natural body rhythms in both humans and animals. It interrupts sleep and confuses the circadian rhythm (生理节奏). An increased amount of light at night lowers melatonin (褪黑素) production, which results in less sleep, headaches, stress and other health problems. Blue light, in particular, has been shown to reduce levels of melatonin in humans. It is found in cell phones and other computer devices, as well as in LEDs, the kinds of bulbs that have become popular at home and in industrial and city lighting due to their low cost and energy efficiency.
Studies show that light pollution is also influencing animal behaviors, such as migration (迁徙) patterns and habitat formation. Because of light pollution, sea turtles guided by moonlight during migration lose their way, and often die. Even animals living under the deep sea may be influenced by underwater artificial lighting. Studies show that the artificial light is changing ocean ecosystems.
The good news is that light pollution is reversible (可逆的) and each one of us can make a difference! Now, many people are taking action to reduce light pollution and bring back the natural night sky. People are required to use outdoor lighting only when and where it is needed and to close window blinds, shades, and curtains at night to keep light inside.
22.What does the underlined word “havoc” in Para.3 probably mean?
A.Improve. B.Keep. C.Manage. D.Damage.
23.Why is melatonin mentioned in the passage?
A.To introduce an important biological process of our body.
B.To describe the importance of having a good night’s sleep.
C.To give an example of how artificial light influences our health.
D.To suggest using more blue light at night.
24.What is the author’s attitude towards the control of light pollution?
A.Uncertain. B.Doubtful. C.Worried. D.Hopeful.
25.According to the passage, which would the author agree with?
A.Light pollution is the hardest type of pollution to solve.
B.Deep-sea environment can help animals avoid light pollution.
C.Artificial light influences the sense of direction of animals.
D.LEDs can be used more because of low cost and energy efficiency.
【答案】22.D 23.C 24.D 25.C

22.词句猜测题。根据“Artificial (人造的) light can havoc on natural body rhythms in both humans and animals. It interrupts sleep and confuses the circadian rhythm (生理节奏)”可知,人造光扰乱睡眠、打乱生理节奏,因此可知人造光对自然生理节奏有严重破坏作用,画线单词应表示“严重破坏”。故选D。
23.推理判断题。根据“Artificial (人造的) light can havoc on natural body rhythms... It interrupts sleep and confuses the circadian rhythm (生理节奏).An increased amount of light at night lowers melatonin (褪黑素) production, which results in less sleep, headaches, stress and other health problems.”可知,文章提到“melatonin (褪黑素)”的目的是用实例证明人工照明是如何影响我们健康的。故选C。
24.观点态度题。根据“The good news is that light pollution is reversible (可逆的) and each one of us can make a difference! Now, many people are taking action to reduce light pollution and bring back the natural night sky.”可知,作者认为光污染可逆,人们能有所作为,现在很多人已在行动,所以作者对光污染控制持乐观态度。故选D。
25.推理判断题。根据“Because of light pollution, sea turtles guided by moonlight during migration lose their way, and often die.”可知,由于光污染,依靠月光迁徙的海龟会迷路,因此作者赞同“人造光影响动物方向感”的观点。故选C。

“Three apples have changed the world. One is for Eve, one is for Newton. The third is in the hands of Steve Jobs.” said someone. Steve Jobs was the former CEO of the Apple computer company in his parents’ garage (车库) on April Fool’s Day, 1976. Through many years’ hard work, Jobs and his Apple products were a great success. People believe he has made the world a better place. Many young people also think of Apple products as a fashion icon.
Because of his great achievements in this area, he was honored with a number of awards, including the National Medal of Technology in 1985, The Times cover character (封面人物) and the Most Successful Manager in 1997.
Jobs’ road to success wasn’t an easy one. He experienced several ups and downs, but he was still standing. Just as Hemingway in The Old Man and the Sea said, “A man can be destroyed, but not defeated (打败).” So he was considered as an American hero.
What did Jobs’ workers and family members think of him?
On one hand, some workers described him as a strange, bad-tempered (坏脾气的) boss. They said he was impatient with those who disagreed with him or didn’t understand his ideas. On the other hand, his family members thought of him as a home-loving dad with each of his four children. He worried about all the things about them, such as their boyfriends, travel, safety and even skirt length. Though he was quite busy, he still attended his daughter’s graduation party.
11.What do you think of Steve Jobs according to (根据) the passage?
A.Home-loving. B.Honest. C.Jealous. D.Humorous.
