Have you ever thought that someone looks like their name? A new study suggests that a person’s name may influence how they look when they grow up.
In the study, researchers showed people photos of different faces and asked them to choose the most matching (相配的) names. People in the study could correctly match the names to the adult faces quite well. However, they found it much harder to match names to children’s faces. This suggests that as people grow older, their looks might slowly change to fit their name.
The researchers also used a computer program to compare faces. It found that adults with the same name look more similar to each other than adults with different names. But this was not true for children.
▲ The researchers think it might be because many people have the same ideas about names. For example, people might think someone named “Bob” should have a rounder and happier face. Without realizing it, a person named Bob might smile more often or choose a certain hairstyle, making his face look rounder and friendlier over time. This way, he slowly grows to look like his name.
The study shows that our names might play a small but interesting part in shaping who we are even in how we look.

Have you ever noticed that when you wait in line at the supermarket, other lines always seem to move faster than yours? Now, a survey by The New York Times looks into the math and psychology (心理学) of waiting in line. It also gives ideas on finding the fastest line.
● Choose someone with many things
Expert Dan Meyer believes that seeing a shopper with many things doesn’t always mean a long wait. “Each person takes about 41 seconds to say hello, pay, and leave. But each thing they buy only takes 3 seconds.
This means if there are five people in front of you, and each person has 10 things, the waiting time will be 355 seconds. But if there is only one person in front of you, with 50 things, the waiting time is 191 seconds. You can see which is faster.
● Study the customers
Notice who is in line. Older customers may move slower. The things they buy are also important. For example, four bottles of the same milk will go faster than four different things.
● Go left
According to US science writer Robert Samuel, around 90% of people are right-handed. That means they will naturally choose lines on the right. So heading to the left will give you a better chance of finding a faster line.
So next time, remember these ideas. They can help you wait less and get you through the line faster.
11. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By telling a story. B. By listing numbers.

A recent study shows that grey squirrels are making life harder for red squirrels in the UK. But now, a group of scientists has made a new way to help the red squirrels. They are trying it out in several forests.
Red squirrels have lived in the UK for about 10,000 years. But today, only around 160,000 are left. They used to live in many forests all over the country. Now, they mostly live in northern England and Scotland.
On the other hand, there are 2.7 million grey squirrels in the UK. People brought these grey squirrels from North America in 1876. Grey squirrels are bigger than red squirrels. They are better at finding food and taking over places to live. They also carry a disease called squirrelpox. This disease does not hurt grey squirrels, but it is very dangerous to red squirrels.
To help grow the number of red squirrels, scientists built a special tool named Squirrel Agent. It uses artificial intelligence (AI). The tool can distinguish between red and grey squirrels. Its job is to give more food to red squirrels and stop the number of grey squirrels from growing. The tool helps red squirrels get to special feeding boxes. They can eat safely there. For grey squirrels, it gives a different kind of food. The food stops them from having babies.
This new AI tool gives hope for the future of red squirrels. Scientists believe they can help these special animals. Maybe one day, red squirrels will live in all UK forests again.
16. Where do most red squirrels live now?

In the UK, tap water is very clean and safe to drink. But many people still buy bottled water. Every year, people drink much bottled water. Most water bottles are made of plastic and used only once. Although some bottles can be used again, many are thrown away. These plastic bottles can take hundreds of years to break down and pollute the world around us.
Some people want stores to stop selling bottled water. They say it’s not needed because tap water is good and almost free. They think people should use reusable water bottles. People can use these bottles many times. This good habit will help keep the world clean and save money too. Also, it will help protect animals and nature.
Others don’t agree. They say bottled water is important for people who are traveling or who forget their water bottles. On hot days, people need to drink more water. So, finding water becomes very important. It’s not easy to find places to fill water bottles when you’re away from home. Without bottled water, some people might drink sugary drinks that are less healthy.

It’s the second time Sam has cut his hair short to raise money for a good reason.
Sam Edmunds recently decided to raise money by having his hair cut very short. The 15-year-old boy from London spent four years growing his hair, so there was a lot to cut off.
The last time he cut his hair was in 2021. He collected £3,200 for a local food bank (where people in need can get food and help). He tells The Week Junior: “I always wanted to do it again.”
This time, Sam is supporting the Alzheimer’s Society charity. Alzheimer’s is a kind of disease that can influence a person’s memory, thoughts, and the way they act. It usually happens to older people and gets worse over time. This is important to Sam because his friend died of Alzheimer’s in 2023. Also, in February 2024, a famous football player named Stan Bowles died of the same disease. Sam is a big fan of him, so he called his activity “Bald for Bowles”.
So far, an online page has helped raise more than £4,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society. Sam also gave his hair to the Little Princess Trust. This group gives wigs to young people who have lost their hair because of a serious disease.
Sam is already thinking about his next haircut for charity, but he needs to wait for his hair to grow back. “Maybe in another three or four years, I’ll do it again,” he says.

This is an important discussion about keeping the world clean while making sure people can get water when they need it. What do you think? Should we stop selling bottled water or not?
