The Last Kids on Earth is a series of books by Max Brallier. The first book of this best-selling series came out in 2015. And its graphic (漫画) version was published in 2024. Together with a good painter Brian Churilla, Max Brallier gave graphic-novel lovers a chance to connect with this magical story.
The story takes place in a town called Wakefield. It’s written from the view of 13-year-old Jack Sullivan. The story uses the end of the world as the setting for there won’t be any rules at that time. For a kid, there are rules everywhere. If we want to go outside at midnight, we can’t. But if the world was ending, we could!
Jack, the hero of the graphic novel, tries to make the apocalypse (末日) more fun. He teams up with his best friend Quint and the school bully, Dirk Savage. Jack’s most exciting exploration is to save a girl named June del Toro. He believes June needs a hero, but later he finds that she clearly doesn’t need to be saved. Instead, ▲ . When the four kids want to leave together the next day, a monster (怪物) called Blarg is waiting for them outside. Do they make it out alive?
I think of The Last Kids on Earth: The Graphic Novel as an adventure novel first, rather than a horror (恐怖) one. Although there are horrible characters in it, it is an adventure story: the action, the comedy, with a little bit of horror. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy comedy, action, and monsters.

推理判断题。根据第3段“He believes June needs a hero, but later he finds that she clearly doesn’t need to be saved. Instead...”可知,杰克原以为琼需要被拯救,结果发现她不需要。Instead后应接与前句意思相反的情况,即“他邀请琼加入他们”更符合逻辑,也衔接后文“四个孩子想一起离开”。故选C。

Costa Rica, meaning “rich coast” in Spanish, is a gem. Let’s get to know the wonderful land.
Part 1: Geography
Costa Rica is a small country in Central America. The Caribbean Sea is to the east and the Pacific Ocean is to the west. There are two main mountain ranges in the country: the Cordillera Volcanica and the Cordillera de Talamanca.
Part 2: ▲
Indigenous (本土的) languages are usually used in Costa Rica such as the Bribri. Also, English is spoken as a second language there.
In Costa Rica, family is the most important. Children live with their families until they get married. And leisure is treasured above work. Costa Ricans agree that they should enjoy their life. That’s why there are many festivals and holidays in this country.
For Costa Ricans, soccer is not just a sport, but a way of life. From the cities to the countryside, people are crazy about soccer. Even small towns have their own teams and hold matches almost every weekend. During the games, people watch and cheer for their teams.
Part 3: Nature
In Costa Rica, one-fifth of its land is covered by all kinds of forests—tropical rain forests, tropical dry forests, cloud forests and temperate forests. Tropical dry forests remain dry until the rainy season begins in April or May. They come alive with flowers when the rains arrive. However, rain forests are wet and hot all year round. Heavy rains encourage plant growth from the treetop to the forest floor.
Costa Rica develops 30 national parks to protect its biodiversity (生物多样性). This makes it a home for 6% of the world’s species. In this country, you can find about 2,000 species of trees, 9,000 species of flowering plants and 500,000 species of animals.
23. Who might be the most interested in this text?
A. Students who are fond of geography. B. Players who achieved great success.
C. Scientists who study population growth. D. Tourists who are planning vacations.
24. Which subtitle (小标题) can best match Part 2?
A. Climate. B. History. C. Culture. D. Education.
25. What does the underlined word “they” refer to in Part 3?
A. Cloud forests. B. Temperate forests. C. Tropical rain forests. D. Tropical dry forests.

C. People often watch soccer matches at weekends.
D. People usually talk with their family in Spanish.

Amelia Earhart didn’t back down. The 21-year-old was attending an air show in Canada in 1918 when a plane dived right toward her. Instead of running away, she faced the plane down.
That wasn’t Earhart’s only brave moment. She was born in Kansas in 1897. During World War I, she volunteered to treat the wounded in Canada in 1917. Nearby were pilot practice fields, where she discovered her deep love for flying. After taking her first flight in 1920, she started working odd jobs (零工) to pay for flying lessons. In 1923, she got an international pilot’s license, becoming one of only 16 women pilots in the world.
In the 1920s, aviation (航空) was still new and most pilots were men. Earhart wanted to change that and in 1931 she became the first president of the Ninety-Nines, an organization of women pilots. In 1935, Earhart became the first person to fly solo across both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Between 1930 and 1935, Earhart set at least five women’s flying records.
But Earhart wanted to do something even bigger. On June 1st, 1937, she and Fred Noonan took off from Florida, trying to fly 29,000 miles around the world. By June 29th, they had only 7,000 miles to go. But something happened as they crossed the Pacific Ocean. They headed toward Howland Island on July 2nd, 1937. They were never seen again.
President Roosevelt sent 66 aircraft and 9 ships to look for them, but the fliers vanished. The official search ended on July 18th, 1937, but today people are still trying to find out what happened to the woman who changed aviation history.
27. Why does the writer describe the moment in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce a topic. B. To predict the ending.
C. To express an opinion. D. To highlight a problem.
28. Which is the correct order of the following events?
①. Earhart got her pilot’s license. ②Earhart volunteered to treat the wounded.
③Earhart attended an air show in Canada. ④Earhart flew solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
A. ③-④-②-① B. ②-③-①-④ C. ①-②-④-③ D. ④-③-①-②
29. What does the underlined word “vanished” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Escaped. B. Replied. C. Disappeared. D. Apologized.
30 What can be the best title of the text?
A. Amelia Earhart: A Brave Woman Pilot. B. Howland Island: The Land of the Dead.
C. The Ninety-Nines: A Great Organization. D. World War I: The Beginning of All Wars.

【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“President Roosevelt sent 66 aircraft and 9 ships to look for them, but the fliers vanished.”
故选A。
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面材料,根据短文内容完成小题,每空限填一词。
Plastic pollution in the ocean is a serious problem now. By 2050, there may be more plastic than fish in the ocean. What is plastic pollution? And what can we do to reduce and prevent it?
Plastic pollution is caused by the accumulation (积累) of plastic waste in the environment. Plastic can be sorted by forming processes, including primary plastics and secondary plastics, resulting from the degradation (降解) of the primary ones. It can also be sorted by its size, from microplastics—small particles (less than 5 mm) to macroplastics.
About 80% of litter in the ocean comes from land. Much of it is household waste that can’t be recycled. Rain carries the waste into rivers and the ocean. Floods and other natural disasters (灾害) also cause plastic pollution.
How to end plastic pollution? Cleaning up the ocean is a very important first step but not a long-term solution. The best way to solve plastic pollution is to change our mindsets and habits:
Reduce: Don’t use plastic products when they are not strictly necessary.
Reuse: Use plastic products for as long as possible. Before throwing them away, consider how they can be used again.
Recycle: Collect plastic waste and change it into something else to be reused.
Kinds
Forming processes:
·____31____ plastics
·Secondary plastics
Size:

·Macroplastics
____32____
Household waste that can’t be recycled is ____33____ into rivers and the ocean.

Hi, I’m Linda, a teen writer of the Just Ask column in an English-language newspaper. I help solve teen readers’ problems. Go ahead and ask away!
Dear Linda,
My mom always says I’m on my phone too much, but she’s always on hers, too. Every time I mention it to her, she doesn’t listen and always says I’m just a kid, not an adult. It really makes me angry. What should I do?
David
Dear Linda,
I find out that my classmates often stay up late to do extra exercise to improve their study. I once did the same, but it made me sleepy the next day and I couldn’t behave well in class. However, if I stop doing so, I will feel like I’m falling behind. What should I do?

Yours,
Linda
【答案】Possible version 1:
Dear David,
I understand your feelings. But I think you should use your phone less. Because spending too much time on your phone is bad for your eyes. Your mom is worried about your phone usage because she loves you and wants to protect you.
Besides, why not sit down and talk with your mom? It can help her understand how you feel without feeling angry.
Finally, try to do something meaningful with your parents, such as doing sports, reading books or watching movies. I’m sure it will make your family healthier and happier.
Yours,
Linda
Possible version 2:
Dear Sarah,
I don’t think what your classmates are doing is right. You shouldn’t stay up too late at night. It’s important for us to get enough sleep. If you stay up too late you will be too tired in class and fall behind others. So, study in the way that works for you, making sure to have a balance between rest and work.
In my opinion, using your time well is always better than working too hard. You can listen to your teachers carefully in class. This way, you will behave well in your study.
Yours,
Linda

The Last Kids on Earth is a series of books by Max Brallier. The first book of this best-selling series came out in 2015. And its graphic (漫画) version was published in 2024. Together with a good painter Brian Churilla, Max Brallier gave graphic-novel lovers a chance to connect with this magical story.

Recycle: Collect plastic waste and change it into something else to be reused
