Her world has always been silent. Alone in a town in England, she often felt lonely. Then one day in April 2021, something stopped Moss as she read the local newspaper. It was a photo of a tiny black-and-white cat. A family was looking for a home for their last newborn cat. Moss fell in love with it at first sight and contacted the family. Soon, the cat came to Moss’s house. Moss called the cat Zebby because his colors looked like those of a zebra. Moss once heard of studies showing that pets can help people deal with loneliness. However, she had no idea that Zebby would become her helper and her ears. From their first night together, Zebby has slept next to her. When he hears noises in the dark, he jumps up. “He became my night watch cat,” Moss said. “Sometimes he would run around the room until I woke up.” After several weeks, Moss noticed that whenever her phone rang or someone knocked at the door, Zebby would touch her lightly. It wasn’t long before the cat took on another task: collecting Moss’s mail. Now whenever he hears the mailbox being opened, he runs towards it, carries the mail in his mouth and drops it at Moss’s feet. This past May, Zebby was named Britain’s National Cat of the Year by Cats Protection. According to the largest cat charity, Zebby beat out about 3,000 other cats because of the many ways he makes Moss’s life easier. He has had no training at all, but his natural abilities seem to have told him that his owner needs his help. “Zebby has made my house a home,” Moss said. “I can hardly imagine not having Zebby in my life now.” 29. Why did Moss choose the cat? A. Because she wanted to help a local family. B. Because she wished to have a helping ear. C. Because she liked it when she saw its photo. D. Because she planned to study pet animals. 30. What do the underlined words “beat out” probably mean in Paragraph 5? A. Looked prettier than. B. Did better than. C. Was quieter than. D. Felt softer than. 31. What is the best title for the passage? A. Moss trains Zebby for the prize B. Zebby finds itself a warm home C. Moss takes good care of Zebby D. Zebby brings help and joy to Moss 【答案】29. C 30. B 31. 根据“It was a photo of a tiny black-and-white cat. A family was looking for a home for their last newborn cat. Moss fell in love with it at first sight and contacted the family.” 根据“Zebby beat out about 3,000 other cats because of the many ways he makes Moss’s life easier.” 做得更好”,与“Did better than”同义。 D。 C About 80% of people do not get enough vitamin D every day. It works by using an AI program called GPT-1 to translate brain activity words. In order to achieve this, scientists did a lot. First, scientists got everything ready before the tests. They invited some volunteers. Each spent sixteen hours listening to stories in a scanner (扫描仪). They imagined the stories as they heard them, and the scanner recorded their brain activity. GPT-1 made connections between the ideas in the stories and the recordings of the listeners’ brain activity. Then came the tests. The scientists did them in three different ways. Test 1 The researchers played a new story. GPT-1 was only given recordings of the volunteers’ brain activity. But the words that GPT-1 predicted (预测) were very similar to the words in the story that they were listening to. The words weren’t exactly the same, but they often carried the same meaning. For example, when a volunteer was listening to a story about a woman who didn't have a driver’s license (驾照), the program came up with this: “She hasn’t even started to learn to drive yet.” Test 2 The scientists also carried out the test when volunteers imagined their own stories. “It really works at the level of ideas. The ideas are the same but expressed in different words,” says Alexander Huth, one of the scientists behind the study. Test 3 The researchers showed the volunteers silent movies, with no spoken words at all. GPT-1 could still figure out (算出) the basic ideas. After the tests, the scientists say that GPT-1 is the first AI program to turn what people are thinking into words without brain surgery The tool isn’t something that can be easily used today, mainly because of the size and the cost of the scanner. In the future, they believe, a similar but cheaper tool could help people who have lost the ability to speak because of an injury or disease. The scientists say their tool can’t be used to “read people’s minds” without permission (允许). The tool only works if the person wants to share their thoughts. 36. What was the scanner used to do? A. Record brain activity. B. Read the volunteers’ ideas. C. Catch the ideas of stories. D. Work out the ideas. 37. What was GPT-1 used to do? A. Receive sounds. B. Test the scanner. C. Produce silent movies. D. Turn recordings of brain activity into words. 38. In which way was information put into volunteers’ brain in Test 3? A. Listening. B. Imagining. C. Watching. D. Reading. 39. Why did scientists do the tests? A. To show how the tool works. B. To prove that the tool works well. C. To test in which fields the tool can be used. D. To study whose mind can be read. 40. Who could the tool help according to the passage? A. People who can’t speak. B. People who can’t hear. C. People who can’t read. D. People who can’t drive. 36. A 37. D 38. C 39. B 40. I dropped another pecan (山核桃) into my basket. Then a gentle autumn wind blew some more off the tree. I ran to pick them up. Whew! Pecan picking was hard. My basket was only half full. I was visiting my grandpa’s farm in Kansas, and Grandpa sent me into the woods to pick up pecans for us to enjoy later. I wasn’t about to let him down. Then something caught my eye: a squirrel picked up a pecan, climbed up a tree and disappeared into a large hole. A moment later, the squirrel climbed down to the ground to pick another pecan. Once again, he took the pecan back to his secret hiding place inside the hollow (洞) of the tree. Not so secret anymore, I thought. I ran over to the tree and found the hollow was filled with sweet pecans. They were right there for the taking. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I took all the pecans from the hollow. Now the basket was full! I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all of the pecans I’d collected. “Look,Grandpa,” I shouted, “look at all of the pecans I found!” Grandpa took a look at my basket. “Well, well, how did you find so many, Jimmy?” I told him how I’d followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place. Grandpa congratulated me on finding out something about the squirrel’s habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders. “That squirrel worked very hard to collect his winter food,” he said. “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don’t you think that little squirrel will be very hungry when it gets cold?” “I didn’t think about that,” I said. “I know,” Grandpa said. “But a good man should never take advantage of someone else’s hard work, even the squirrel’s.” Suddenly I felt as hollow as that old tree. The image (形象) of that hungry squirrel wouldn’t leave my mind. There was only one thing I could do. … a squirrel 41. I think he is kind and wise.(开放性试题,言之有理即可) 【解析】 【导语】本文讲述了作者在爷爷的农场捡山核桃时,为了快速装满篮子而拿走松鼠辛苦囤积的粮食。 【41题详解】 根据文章第二段首句“I was visiting my grandpa’s farm… and Grandpa sent me into the woods to pick up pecans for us to enjoy later.” To pick up pecans (for us to enjoy later). 【42题详解】 根据文章第四段“Handful by handful, I took all the pecans from the hollow. Now the basket was full!”及第五段“ I was so proud of myself.” He filled his basket with so many pecans./His basket was full of pecans. 【43题详解】 根据文章倒数第四段爷爷的话“But a good man should never take advantage of someone else’s hard work, even the squirrel’s.” A good man should never take advantage of someone else’s hard work. 文章最后提到,作者感到内心空洞,松鼠挨饿的景象挥之不去,并说“There was only one thing I could do.”,我只有一件事能做。 The writer put all the pecans back into the hole. I think he is kind and wise. Then one day in April 2021 something stopped Moss as she read the local newspaper. D Scientists train AI to read human thoughts Scientists have created a new tool that can turn people’s thoughts into words. Plunk!
