A
Most of us are aware that we must take care of the environment, and the majority of us take steps to save energy and reduce waste and pollution. But recently some “green truths” have been shown to be only half true,or even completely false. Here are some common ones.Which are really green?
It's better to take a shower than a bath.
It depends on how long you spend in the shower and how large your bath is.If you spend more than eight minutes in a shower, you'll use as much water as in a bath—about 50 litres of water. Therefore, the key is to keep your shower time as short as possible.
Eating local food is good for the environment.
It seems like common sense: eating local food should be better for the environment, because it does not need to be transported long distances and kept cold during transport.Unfortunately,it is not that simple. In some cases, local produce might have used more energy and produced more greenhouse gases than produce grown a long way away.
When we turn off a device, such as television,it goes into stand-by mode.Devices in this mode still use power, and older devices in stand-by mode can use even more. This happens because electricity continues to leak from the device, even when it is turned “off”.To make sure your appliances are in fact off, remove the plug from its power supply.
Environmental awareness is now part of daily life. But it's worth checking common ideas and opinions to see what's really green.
1.What food is more environmentally friendly?
A.It all depends. B.None of them.
C.Local produce. D.Non-native food.
根据第三段“It seems like common sense: eating local food should be better for the environment, because it does not need to be transported long distances and kept cold during transport.Unfortunately,it is not that simple. In some cases, local produce might have used more energy and produced more greenhouse gases than produce grown a long way away.” 故选A。
2.Which of the following best suits the blank?
A.When you turn off a device,it still uses power.
B.When you turn off a device,it stops using power.
C.Unplugging a device is better than turning off a device.
D.Going into stand-by mode is better than turning off a device.
根据倒数第二段“When we turn off a device, such as television,it goes into stand-by mode.Devices in this mode still use power, and older devices in stand-by mode can use even more.”
3.Why does the author write this passage?
A.To tell the truth about some “green truths”.
B.To call on people to protect the environment.
C.To explain the significance of energy-saving.
D.To present some practical ways to reduce waste.
根据第一段“But recently some ‘green truths’ have been shown to be only half true,or even completely false. Here are some common ones.Which are really green?” 故选A。
B
Sometime in the early 1960s,a significant thing happened in Sydney,Australia. The city discovered its harbor. Then, one after another,Sydney discovered lots of things that were just sort of there—broad parks, superb beaches, and a culturally diverse population. But it is the harbor that makes the city.
Andrew Reynolds,a cheerful fellow in his early 30s,pilots Sydney ferryboats for a living.I spent the whole morning shuttling back and forth across the harbor. After our third run Andrew shut down the engine, and we went our separate ways—he for a lunch break,I to explore the city.
“I'll miss these old boats,”he said as we parted.
“How do you mean?”I asked.
“Oh,they're replacing them with catamarans.Catamarans are faster,but they're not so elegant,and they're not fun to pilot.But that's progress,I guess.”
Everywhere in Sydney these days, change and progress are the watchwords(口号),and traditions are increasingly rare.Shirley Fitzgerald, the city's official historian, told me that in its rush to modernity in the 1970s,Sydney swept aside much of its past, including many of its finest buildings.“Sydney is confused about itself,”she said.“We can't seem to make up our minds whether we want a modern city or a traditional one. It's a conflict that we aren't getting any better at resolving(解决).”
On the other hand, being young and old at the same time has its attractions.I considered this when I met a thoughtful young businessman named Anthony.“Many people say that we lack culture in this country,”he told me.“What people forget is that the Italians, when they came to Australia, brought 2,000 years of their culture, the Greeks some 3,000 years, and the Chinese more still. We've got a foundation built on ancient cultures but with a drive and dynamism of a young country. It's a pretty hard combination to beat.”
He is right, but I can't help wishing they would keep those old ferries.
4.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.Sydney's striking architecture.
B.The cultural diversity of Sydney.
C.The key to Sydney's development.
D.Sydney's tourist attractions in the 1960s.
根据第一段“Sometime in the early 1960s,a significant thing happened in Sydney,Australia. The city discovered its harbor.(20世纪60年代初,澳大利亚悉尼发生了一件大事。这座城市发现了它的港口。)”和“But it is the harbor that makes the city.(但是是港口造就了这座城市。)”
5.What can we learn about Andrew Reynolds?
A.He goes to work by boat.
B.He looks forward to a new life.
C.He pilots catamarans well.
D.He is attached to the old ferries.
根据第二段“Andrew Reynolds,a cheerful fellow in his early 30s,pilots Sydney ferryboats for a living.”、第三段“I'll miss these old boats.”和第五段“Catamarans are faster,but they're not so elegant,and they're not fun to pilot.”
6.What does Shirley Fitzgerald think of Sydney?
A.It is losing its traditions.
B.It should speed up its progress.
C.It should expand its population.
D.It is becoming more international.
根据倒数第三段“Shirley Fitzgerald, the city's official historian, told me that in its rush to modernity in the 1970s,Sydney swept aside much of its past, including many of its finest buildings.(悉尼的官方历史学家Shirley Fitzgerald告诉我,在20世纪70年代奔向现代化的过程中,悉尼将它的大部分过去抛诸脑后,包括许多最漂亮的建筑。)” 故选A。
7.Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A.A city can be young and old at the same time.
B.A city built on ancient cultures is more dynamic.
C.Modernity is usually achieved at the cost of elegance.
D.Compromise should be made between the local and the foreign.
根据倒数第二段“On the other hand, being young and old at the same time has its attractions.I considered this when I met a thoughtful young businessman named Anthony.(另一方面,既年轻又古老也有它的魅力。当我遇到一位深思熟虑的年轻商人Anthony时,我考虑到了这一点。)”以及最后一段“He is right(他说得没错)”可推知,作者赞同Anthony的观点,认为一座城市可以既年轻又古老。故选A。

The next time you need to get somewhere, you may be able to follow your nose.A study has found that a strong sense of smell is associated with a strong sense of direction.
Researchers conducted an experiment at McGill University in Canada.Fifty-seven adults were invited to participate in a virtual “way-finding task” in which they had to make their way around a virtual environment. They were given 20 minutes to learn about the virtual city. After having passed by each of eight landmarks at least twice, the participants were placed in front of one of the landmarks and asked to find the most direct route to one assigned by the researchers.
The participants also smelled 40 scented (有香气的) pens one at a time. After a brief sniff, the participants chose one word that best identified the smell from four words on a screen.
An additional exercise used a virtual maze (迷宫) to determine if the participants were more likely to rely on landmarks to find the way or if they used a more habit-based method built over time as people travelled the same route over and over again.
What the researchers found was that those with the ability to correctly identify the smells of the pens also had the easiest time performing the way-finding task by way of landmarks.A strong sense of smell was not identified in the participants who used the more habit-based method.
The connection between the sense of smell and way-finding likely came about as a result of the evolution of the nervous system. The original function of the sense of smell in humans may have been intended to support our spatial memory.
Keep that in mind the next time you get lost going to the dentist. It won't prevent you from getting horribly lost, but it's good food for thought along the way.
8.How did the researchers carry out the study?
A.By using typical landmarks in a real city.
B.By combining virtual tests with real-life tests.
C.By testing different senses in a virtual environment.
D.By collecting routine observation data from the participants.
9.What were the participants asked to do after they smelled a scented pen?
A.Decide whether they liked the smell.
B.Use a sentence to describe the smell.
C.Choose a suitable word for the smell.
D.Find the landmark that featured the smell.
10.Which of the following factors is better related to a strong sense of direction according to Paragraph 5?

11.The meaning of the word “spatial” underlined in Paragraph 6 relates to “ ”.
A.situation B.position
C.spirit D.time
那么画线单词所在句“The original function of the sense of smell in humans may have been intended to support our spatial memory。”
D
In Australia, plenty of wild things can bite or,sting (刺痛) you.Strangely enough, one of them is a tree. The rain forests of eastern Australia are home to a stinging tree known as Dendrocnide.
Many people call it the gympie-gympie tree—a name given to the tree by native Australians.“Like other stinging plants, the stinging tree is covered in needle-like hairs, which are around five millimeters in length and can inject (注射) poison when they make contact with skin. The pain caused by the tree's sting is severe and it can last for hours, days or weeks,” said Irina Vetter, associate professor at the University of Queensland.
Scientists have long looked for the source of this powerful sting. Now researchers at the University of Queensland have discovered what makes the tree's sting so bad. After carefully studying different kinds of gympie-gympie trees, the scientists were able to separate out different chemicals that the trees produce. This allowed them to identify a group of chemicals they believed was responsible for the pain.
The researchers created artificial versions of these chemicals, which they call “gympietides”.
Sure enough, when the scientists injected mice with gympietides, the mice licked (舔) the places where they'd been injected, which showed that they hurt in those places. When the scientists studied the way gympietides were built, they found that they formed a knot-like (扭结的) shape. The shape makes the chemicals very stable, which helps explain why the pain stays so long.
The knot-like shape of gympietides was similar to the shape of poisons produced by poisonous spiders and cone snails. The scientists were surprised to see three very different kinds of life all using similar poisons.Spiders and cone snails carry poisons because they catch food by stinging other creatures. It's not clear how stinging helps the gympie-gympie tree.
The scientists also discovered gympietides seem to cause everlasting changes to the channels in sensory neurons (感觉神经元).This action also helps to explanation why the pain lasts so long.
“By understanding how this poison works,we hope to provide better treatment for those who have been stung by the plant,to ease or stop the pain,” said Vetter.

14.What does Irina Vetter think of the research findings?
A.They are not reliable.
B.They are of great value.
C.They have no practical use.
D.They need to be further proved.

A few years ago I worked in an international company that sold computer devices.I had to travel a lot all over the country as a part of my work.I remember that I was at a stage of my life where I only cared about how to make more money.
On one of my trips,I came out of the airport to take a bus to downtown,as usual. It was the same routine:get into the city, take the bus to the hotel, visit the customer, work late, take the bus back to the airport and fly back...That day,for some reasons,I decided to take the stairs down to a different exit, where I came across a beautiful garden I had never seen before.I waited there, enjoying the scenery. Finally the bus came.
Usually I always took the seat behind the driver. That day I sat down somewhere in the middle.A boy was seated next to me,carrying a lot of suitcases.Suddenly,he turned to me and gave me one of the most sincere smiles I had ever seen from a stranger.Warmly,he said,“Hi,the perfect day in the perfect place, huh?”
I remember thinking to myself-this must be one of those typical people who is young and naive and just thinks everything is beautiful and easy. Why was he annoying me when I just wanted to enjoy the bus ride? But out of politeness,I replied,“Perfect ! Did your parents pay for you to have some vacations on the beach?”“No,I'm not here for vacation, and I don't have parents,”he shook his head.“I'm here because I want to achieve my biggest dream.I'm on the way to the army school where my grandfather studied a long time ago.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
“I lost my dad 10 years ago then my mom married again. My stepfather
He smiled and told me that for 10 years,he had only one thing on his mind

“I lost my dad 10 years ago then my mom married again. My stepfather threw me out of the house.Since then,I've been living all over the country.I've met many people who were kind to me.And I've learnt a lot from life through these years,” he said softly. At that point I couldn't say a word.I felt the tears coming.Fortunately,he continued talking.
He smiled and told me that for 10 years,he had only one thing on his mind-to join the army school like his grandfather.“My grandfather was a general of the army.He left me this.”he said proudly. He showed me a golden knife and said this was the best memory of his childhood.“The only thing I know is that I will follow my biggest dream and every day I will be happy.”Soon, the bus reached his stop.He stood up,took all his suitcases, and said goodbye with a big smile. From that day on,I always try to do everything with my best smile on my face.
