Col du Chaussy, France
At 1,532 metres above sea level, Col du Chaussy is a high mountain pass in south-eastern France. This stretch is only about 3.2 km long but features 17 hairpin turns. There’s a small concrete barrier as you zigzag upward but this improbable road, while impossibly picturesque, is still one of the most dangerous roads in the world.

Taroko Gorge Road in Taiwan is framed by rock on one side and sheer cliff drops on the other. The popular 19 km stretch is so spectacular that it draws a constant parade of tour buses, cars, scooters, bicyclists and pedestrians, all sharing the same narrow road. Commonwealth Avenue, Philippines
Unlike other roads and highways on this list this one isn’t perched on the edge of a mountain. In fact, it’s a wide urban highway that’s just 12 km long. Due to poor drainage which brings floods on the avenue, this road has earned the tragic nickname “Killer Highway”.

Every morning at 5:30 am, a quiet movement unfolds on a Kerala riverbank. Led by one man, Saji Valuvassery, this floating classroom is teaching people to swim — for free. More than a skill, it’s a lifeline, a community spirit, and a powerful reminder that courage can be contagious
On a quiet February morning in 2009, a school picnic to the scenic spot near the Periyar River turned into a disaster. A boat carrying 15 kids and their teacher overturned in the river, leaving no survivors. The disaster shook Saji Valuvassery, a shop owner. Haunted (困扰) by the thought of the young lives lost, he began offering swimming classes in the very river that had taken them, for free. Little did he know that this simple gesture would turn the banks of the Periyar River into a place filled with laughter and community warmth.
Saji began by teaching his own kids to swim, then their friends, and then a few kids from around the neighbourhood. Word spread. More kids came. Then adults. Today, that small effort has become the “Valasseril River Swimming Club”. Over 10,000 people have learned to swim here, and 2,000 children have been trained to swim across 780 metres of the river — all in one go.
The swimming classes have also grown into a space for sharing knowledge and stories, where everyone who learns is encouraged to give back, keeping the spirit of community flowing as constantly as the river itself. “Once anyone passes their advanced swimming level, they are required to do 6 days of free service, to ensure others’ safety,” explains Saji.
The Valasseril River Swimming Club teaches people from November to May. It pauses (暂停) during the monsoon season (季风季节) and reopens in November, when the river is calm and safe again. Every November, when it restarts, volunteers return voluntarily, led by their shared sense of purpose. When asked what keeps people coming back, Saji simply says, “People go to places where they find happiness.”
4. Why did Saji start the swimming classes?
A. To connect with volunteers.
B. To enrich community activities.
C. To profit from teaching swimming.
D. To stop people from dying in water.
5. What does the author want to show with the figures in paragraph 3?
A. The challenge facing Saji’s swimming club.
B. Saji’s wide influence on kids in the community.
C. The popularity of swimming near the Periyar River.
D. Saji’s remarkable achievement in swimming education.
6. What will advanced swimmers need to do after completing their training?
A. Teach swimming skills for free.
B. Serve as a short-term safety guardian.
C. Share their stories with other learners.
D. Volunteer during the monsoon season.
7. Which of the following best describes Saji?
A. Selfless and caring.
B. Courageous but impractical.
C. Curious but impatient.
D. Brave and generous.

One day I typed into ChatGPT all about my upset feelings and it instantly responded, offering a list of practical advice. Nowadays millions of people are already turning to Chat-GPT and specialist therapy (治疗) chatbots for convenient and inexpensive mental health support.
Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment and burnout, might be able to express empathy (同理心) more openly and tirelessly than humans. But others worry about the consequences of people seeking emotional support from machines that can only pretend to care. Some even wonder if the rise of so-called empathetic AI might change the way we interact with one another. Indeed, empathy is one of our species’ defining qualities, developing as it did in pace with social interaction.
One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980and 2019, which shows that the empathiser must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling. They must also be affected by those emotions and differentiate between themselves and the other person, grasping that the other person’s feelings aren’t their own while still being able to imagine their experience.
On the first point, in recent years, AI-powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued feedback helping to perfect the empathiser’s response, which also requires some degree of intuitive (直觉的) awareness of an individual and their situation.
All of this helps to explain conversations like the ones I had with ChatGPT. At the end of the day, despite talking to multiple chat-bots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up my phone and called a friend.
8. What does the underlined word “boon” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Trap. B. Prize. C. Blessing. D. Challenge.
9. What does the recent analysis show about empathy?
A. It calls for clear communication. B. It starts with emotion identification.
C. It rules out individual difference. D. It depends on rich imagination.
10. What can AI do according to Paragraph 4?
A. Provide data-driven feedback. B. Recognize one’s real desire.
C. Update large language models. D. Predict one’s behavior by intuition.
11. What does the author think of ChatGPT?
A. Its development should be sped up. B. Its intelligence is winning more favor.
C. Its application should be strictly managed. D. Its artificial kindness is no match for humans’.
D
Have you ever found yourself having intrusive (侵扰的) thoughts about something you haven’t finished? Maybe a half-done work project is keeping you up at night or the suspenseful plot of a novel you’re reading keeps circling your thoughts. There is a reason why it’s so hard to stop thinking about uncompleted and interrupted tasks, and psychologists called it the Zeigarnik effect (Z-effect).
The Zeigarnik effect was first observed by a Russian psychologist named Bluma Zeigarnik. While sitting in a busy restaurant in Vienna, Zeigarnik noted that the waiters had better memories of unpaid orders. Once the bill was paid, however, the waiters had trouble remembering the exact details of the orders.
Zeigarnik did a series of experiments in which participants were asked to complete simple tasks such as putting together puzzles, or solving math problems. Half of the participants were interrupted partway through doing these tasks. After an hour-long wait, Zeigarnik asked the participants to describe what they had been working on. She discovered that the people who had been interrupted in their work were twice as likely to remember what they had been doing as the people who had been able to complete the tasks.
We are living in an information explosion era, and we need mental tricks to help us remember a great deal of information. The Zeigarnik effect serves as a prime example. We hold on to information in the short term by constantly pulling it back into our awareness. By thinking of uncompleted tasks often, we’re more likely to keep remembering them until they get done.
The Zeigarnik effect tells us a lot about how memory works and you can use the Zeigarnik effect to your advantage. If you are struggling to memorize something important, momentary interruptions might work to your advantage. Rather than simply repeating the information, review it a few times, and then take a break. Nevertheless, leaving too many tasks unfinished can lead to feelings of overwhelm and anxiety. Therefore, it’s crucial to use this effect wisely in practical applications.
12. What does the Zeigarnik effect mainly refer to according to the passage?
A. People tend to forget completed tasks immediately after finishing them.
B. Uncompleted or interrupted tasks are more likely to stay in people’s memory.
C. Waiters have better memories than ordinary people when it comes to orders.
D. Simple tasks are easier to remember than complex ones for most people.
13. What is the purpose of paragraph 3?
A. To clarify a concept. B. To test an assumption.
C. To analyze the causes. D. To give background information.
14. Which of the following cases best reflects the potential disadvantage of the Zeigarnik effect?
A Airing ads during the suspenseful moments in a TV series.
B. Stopping writing at the thrilling plot of a story.
C. Having many uncompleted tasks listed on the desktop.
D. Interrupting students halfway through solving a math problem.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Tricks of Developing Long-term Memory.
B. The Z-Effect: How to Boost Recall of Finished Tasks.
C. The Power of Completing Tasks Ahead of Schedule.
D. The Z-Effect: How Interruptions Enhance Memory.

One afternoon, Nathan set up a stand (摊位) as usual , selling phone cases. A 10-year-old girl named Michele stopped by and bought one for her mom. As they talked, Nathan shared his dream of having a 3D printer. “With that printer, I can print anything in any form,” Nathan said. “Anything in any form?”
Michele’s eyes lit up with sudden excitement. “Once you get it, could you please make a leg for my pet duck Tim? Because he was missing one,” Michele said hopefully. “That’s a cool project,” Nathan replied. He thought for a minute. “I’ll make him one, but it won’t be ready now. I have to save up some of the money myself to buy the 3D printer.” “How lucky Tim is! You are so kind!” Michele said happily, unable to contain her excitement.
Before leaving, Michele exchanged phone numbers with Nathan. They discovered that they lived in the same neighborhood, which meant Nathan could easily get close to the duck and measure the size of its leg in person to ensure that a suitable prosthetic leg could be made. He promised to reach out as soon as he could afford a printer.
That evening, Nathan told his family about Michele and his promise. His parents praised his kindness and initiative. They agreed to offer some financial support to buy the printer but also emphasized the importance of his own effort. “We’re proud you’re earning this yourself, Nathan,” his father said. “Saving your share shows real commitment.” Nathan nodded firmly, feeling more determined than ever.
Paragraph 1: Nathan worked very hard for the 3D printer.

C 9. B 10. A 11. D

根据第二段的“Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment and burnout, might be able to express empathy (同理心) more openly and tirelessly than humans.
根据第三段的“One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980and 2019, which shows that the empathiser must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling. (最近有一项关于同理心的分析,研究了1980年至2019年间发表的52项研究,结果表明,产生同理心的人首先必须能够识别出对方的感受。)”可知,关于同理心的最近分析表明,同理心的首要条件是能够识别另一个人的感受。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段的“On the first point, in recent years, AI-powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. 故选A。
根据第四段的“But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued feedback helping to perfect the empathiser’s response, which also requires some degree of intuitive (直觉的) awareness of an individual and their situation. (但在其他标准方面,人工智能在很多方面仍未达标。同理心是一种人际关系的体现,持续的反馈有助于完善产生同理心者的回应,这也需要对一个人及其处境有一定程度的直觉意识。)”以及最后一段的“At the end of the day, despite talking to multiple chat-bots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up my phone and called a friend. (最终,尽管我在网上与多个聊天机器人进行了交流,但我还是做了我一直知道自己必须做的事:我拿起电话,给一个朋友打了电话。)”可知,虽然ChatGPT能提供一定的帮助,但在作者看来,它的人工善意仍然不能与真实的人类情感交流相比。由此可推知,作者认为它的人工善意无法与人类的相比。故选D。
Zeigarnik did a series of experiments, in which participants were asked to complete simple tasks such as putting together puzzles, or solving math problems.
A. Airing ads during the suspenseful moments in a TV series.
B 13. B 14. C 15. D

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: However, creating the leg model was not easy.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Possible version1
Nathan worked very hard for the 3D printer. Every morning he set up his stand early. Even on rainy days, he went door-to-door to show phone case samples to potential customers. After weeks of effort and with his parents’ support, Nathan finally had enough money. He rushed to buy a 3D printer and then called Michele at once. Receiving his call, Michele was overjoyed and invited Nathan over that weekend. As agreed, Nathan went to Michele’s home with the 3D printer and some measuring tools.
However, creating the leg model was not easy. The first design was too large, making Tim walk awkwardly. Nathan measured Tim’s remaining leg again and adjusted the 3D model. The second try fit better, but Tim still seemed uncomfortable. With great patience, Nathan finally managed to make a suitable 3D-printed leg on the third attempt. Cautiously, he attached it to Tim. This time, Tim could walk almost normally! Michele burst into cheers, while Nathan smiled, knowing his printer had already started making magic.
Possible version2
Nathan worked very hard for the 3D printer. A wave of determination welled up in Nathan’s heart every time he thought of the little duck waiting for help. Besides selling phone cases, he mowed lawns, delivered newspapers, and even sold handmade crafts at the weekend market. Upon saving enough money, he rushed to the store, signed the receipt, and carried the printer home with trembling hands. His parents exchanged proud smiles, while Michele clapped her hands in excitement. No sooner had the printer started humming than Nathan realized his real challenge was just beginning.
However, creating the leg model was not easy. Having failed several times, Nathan felt frustration creeping in but refused to give up. The soft glow of the desk lamp lit up the scattered drafts and plastic pieces across his desk. “Don’t lose heart,” Michele encouraged, “Tim needs you more than ever.” Having adjusted the design once more, Nathan finally printed a leg that fit perfectly, and Tim waddled forward with surprising ease. This experience taught Nathan that true dreams are built not by talent alone, but by perseverance and compassion.
