As a boy, I wanted to go to the South Pole. As a teenager, I decided I’d like to go to the North Pole too. And yet, I haven’t done either. It had taken me 31 years to just make it to the Arctic.
I was traveling with a film crew from Northern Ireland, following the footsteps of Lord Dufferin who, in the 1850s, sailed from Scotland to the Arctic. As an early adventure tourist, he was driven by the desire to see what lay at the ends of the world.
As we sailed north, icebergs of the size of buses floated past our small boat. Finally, we reached our destination — English Bay, where Dufferin landed and stepped off onto the horseshoe-shaped beach.
This was what I’d dreamt of: standing somewhere so pure and primitive. However, for many early polar explorers, the results were far less pleasant. The south, in particular, was source of extreme danger.
My childhood interest in the South Pole was fueled by the unsuccessful yet heroic expedition of Ernest Shackleton. He died in 1922 while preparing for his fourth adventure. The stories of Robert Falcon Scott are also well-known: he and four companions died on their way back from the South Pole.
So why do explorers put themselves at such risk?
Much of it seems to lie in the purity of the challenge. Scott talked of the appeal of a place that had been “unreached and unseen by humans.” “With a view over shining lands covered by ice-sheets of unimaginable extent, you have the feeling of living over the control of death,” said Fridtjof Nansen, a Norwegian explorer.
On the homeward journey the weather turned and we were left for a few days at the mercy of a storm. We experienced a small taste of helplessness when faced with the raw power of nature. We should be grateful for the great explorers’ spirit and stories. I know I am.
4. Why did the author begin his adventure tour?
A. To assist a film crew. B. To realize a childhood dream.
C. To memorize Lord Dufferin. D. To challenge a world record.
5. Which of the following can best describe the polar explorers in paragraph 5?
A. Hopeful and diligent. B. Intelligent and dedicated.
C. Adventurous and fearless. D. Faithful and innovative.
6. What happened during the writer’s journey?
A. They were trapped in icebergs. B. They were kept off the destination.
C. They were attacked by a storm. D. They were rescued by explorers.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Appeal of the Ends of the World B. The Dream of Traveling to the Arctic
C. The Victory over the Control of Death D. The Gratitude to Great Explorers Spirit
C
We all notice bright colors. People who choose to go eye-catching, whether they express themselves through clothes or accessories (配饰), hear everything from “No one is going to miss you at the party” to “I would never have the courage to wear that.” But according to research, those comments may be both accurate and expected.
Adam D. Pazda and Christopher A. Thorstenson (2019) examined how we perceive people at first impression who wear bright colors. They specifically examined the effect of chroma (色度). They found that targets, both male and female, who were wearing or surrounded by high-chroma colors were perceived as more open and outgoing than in a low-chroma setting. They concluded that chroma is a variable of perception that can influence first impressions of personality.
Drilling down further, they found that high-chroma colors strengthened viewer perspective of openness and extraversion (外向), but not other personalities. These observations are important because some job responsibilities capitalize on some of the personalities inferred through bright colors.
Pazda and Thorstenson recognize what job seekers no doubt consider as they look for a career to match their personal nature: in some occupations, success is fueled by possessing certain personality qualities. They give examples of industries such as sales and marketing as well as customer service as fields where extraverts thrive (繁荣). Accordingly, applicants for these positions may be viewed more favorably and judged as more competent if they wear highly chromatic clothing.
Regarding the generality of their results, Pazda and Thorstenson note that one of the limitations of their study was their use of participants living in the United States, which means their findings may not predict results in other cultures. They note the possibility that chroma may influence the perception of personality differently in non-Western countries, and that high-chroma clothing may be perceived as at odds with social norms in other cultures. The practical outcome, at least in the United States, appears to be that bright colors, like the peacock’s tail, will get you noticed. But depending on your goals, consider tailoring your chroma to the situations, personally and professionally.
8. What is the focus of the study mentioned in the passage?
A. The cultural implications of high chroma colors.
B. The influence of clothing on viewer perceptions.
C. The connection between clothing and job suitability.
D. The impact of high chroma colors on first impression.
9. What does the underlined phrase “capitalize on” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Take advantage of. B. Approve of. C. Object to. D. Dig up.
10. Which might be a limitation of the study?
A. The culturally specific findings. B. The unmonitored research process.
C. The outdated data analysis methods. D. The relatively insufficient theoretical basis.
11. What is the practical advice given by the author in the last paragraph?
A. Reserve bright colors for social events.
B. Always wear bright colors to be noticed.
C. Avoid bright colors in professional settings.
D. Use bright colors strategically based on your goals.
D
“Individuals of all ages who have empathy (共情) understand that sometimes telling little white lies can protect other people from getting hurt,” says Barbara Greenberg, a clinical psychologist in Connecticut. “Most people that I have come across tell these little white lies because they understand that 100 percent honesty all the time is not beneficial.” A white lie, she explains, spares people from unnecessary hurt.
At the same time, Dr. Julia Breur, a marriage and family therapist in Florida, emphasizes the importance of paying attention to the way we respond to someone. The fact is that not telling the truth can result in something unpleasant on you; it’s not just about the person the white lie is being told to. For example, she says someone who always tells others that “all is good” when it comes to a sick parent in an effort to avoid discussions about how serious their health issue really is, can eventually face stressful experiences. When that parent eventually passes away, the person who always gave an “all is good” response ends up emotionally broken.
Sometimes, telling white lies often depends on the situation, Dr. Breur says. For example, consider a woman who has not seen her mother for several months. The daughter has gained noticeable weight, yet the mother responds by excitedly declaring that she looks great. “I emphasize during psychotherapy sessions with my patients that context helps define meaning,” Dr. Breur says. “So when we look at the context of a mother saying you look great when she clearly sees that her daughter has gained weight, it can be acceptable. It reflects the intention of the white lie which is kindness, protection and unconditional love. Otherwise, white lies — especially when told to avoid personal accountability — can start a cycle of mistrust between people, ultimately damaging integrity,” she adds.
Therefore, it’s important to ask ourselves when it is and isn’t suitable to deliver the honest truth, and when it’s best to step back and offer a more delicate response. More often than not, it’s about finding a balance between the two.
12. What can be learned about white lies according to Barbara Greenberg?
A. They are short-lived. B. They are unidentifiable.
C. They are trouble-making. D. They are reasonable.
13. What message does Dr. Breur deliver in paragraph 2?
A. White lies can harm both the liars and the listeners.
B. We must respond to our family members truthfully.
C. It’s wrong to tell white lies to a seriously ill parent.
D. The “all is good” response is effective in dealing with patients.
14. Which kind of white lie would probably be preferred by Dr. Breur?
A. The student refuses to hand in his homework by saying the dog has eaten it.
B. A man who wants to impress someone says he’s read all books in the world.
C. The son’s test scores aren’t satisfactory but his father says he’s made great progress.
D. The girl replies, “I’m fine,” for she doesn’t want to burden others with her problems.
15. Which of the following statements does the author agree with?
A. East or west, white lies are the best.
B. Think twice before you tell white lies.
C. White lies signify unconditional love.
D. White lies are empathetic people’s favorable choice.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help crying sadly when she thought of the scolding (责骂) from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was impossible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, do you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes ... but I don’t have money on me ...”, she replied. “That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of tasty noodles. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. “What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“I was just touched by your kindness!”, said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless. She remembered mother’s familiar face. “Why didn’t I think of that? I appreciated a bowl of noodles from a stranger, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

B 5. C 6. C 7. A

根据第一段中“As a boy, I wanted to go to the South Pole. As a teenager, I decided I’d like to go to the North Pole too. And yet, I haven’t done either. It had taken me 31 years to just make it to the Arctic.(小时候,我想去南极。青少年时期,我又决定我也想去北极。然而,这两个地方我都没去过。我花了31年才到达北极)”以及第四段中“This was what I’d dreamt of: standing somewhere so pure and primitive.(这就是我一直梦想的:站在一个如此纯净又原始的地方)”可知,作者开始这次冒险之旅是为了实现童年的梦想。
根据第五段中“My childhood interest in the South Pole was fueled by the unsuccessful yet heroic expedition of Ernest Shackleton. He died in 1922 while preparing for his fourth adventure. The stories of Robert Falcon Scott are also well-known: he and four companions died on their way back from the South Pole.(欧内斯特・沙克尔顿那次失败却英勇的探险,燃起了我童年时对南极的兴趣。1922年,他在准备第四次探险时去世。罗伯特・福尔肯・斯科特的故事也很有名:他和四名同伴在从南极返回的途中丧生)”可知,这些极地探险家富有冒险精神且无所畏惧。故选C。
【6题详解】

【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第六段“So why do explorers put themselves at such risk?(那么,探险家们为什么要把自己置于这样的危险之中呢?)”以及第七段中“Much of it seems to lie in the purity of the challenge. Scott talked of the appeal of a place that had been “unreached and unseen by humans.”(很大程度上似乎是因为这种挑战的纯粹性。斯科特谈到了一个“人类从未涉足、从未见过的”地方的吸引力)”,结合全文作者的旅行经历和对极地探险家的介绍,可知本文主要讲述的是世界尽头的极地的吸引力。A选项“The Appeal of the Ends of the World(世界尽头的吸引力)”最符合作为文章标题。故选A。
D 9. A 10. A 11. D

根据第二段“Adam D. Pazda and Christopher A. Thorstenson (2019) examined how we perceive people at first impression who wear bright colors. They specifically examined the effect of chroma (色度). (Adam D. Pazda和Christopher A. Thorstenson(2019年)研究了我们对于身着亮色衣物者所产生的第一印象。他们特别研究了色度所产生的影响。)”可知,文章中提到的研究重点是高色度色彩对第一印象的影响。故选D。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Drilling down further, they found that high-chroma colors strengthened viewer perspective of openness and extraversion (外向), but not other personalities. (进一步深入研究后,他们发现高色度颜色会强化观看者对着装者开朗和外向特质的看法,但对其他性格特质则无此影响。)”可知,上文提到研究人员发现高色度的颜色增强了观看者对开放性和外向性的看法,但对其他性格没有作用,说明一些工作职责利用了通过鲜艳的颜色推断出的一些个性。故划线短语意思是“利用”,和Take advantage of意思相近。故选A。
根据最后一段“Regarding the generality of their results, Pazda and Thorstenson note that one of the limitations of their study was their use of participants living in the United States, which means their findings may not predict results in other cultures. (关于研究结果的普适性,Pazda和Thorstenson指出,他们研究的一个局限性在于所选取的参与者均来自美国,这意味着他们的研究结果可能无法预测其他文化背景下的情况。)”可知,特定文化的发现可能是这项研究的局限性。故选A。
根据最后一段“But depending on your goals, consider tailoring your chroma to the situations, personally and professionally. (但根据你的目标,不妨考虑根据个人和职业场合的不同,调整你所选择的色度。)”可知,作者在最后一段给出的实用建议是根据你的目标策略性地使用明亮的颜色。故选D。
D 13. A 14. C 15. B

根据第二段中“The fact is that not telling the truth can result in something unpleasant on you; it’s not just about the person the white lie is being told to.(事实是,不说实话会给你自己带来不愉快的事情;这不仅仅关乎被欺骗的人)”以及后面的例子可知,Dr. 故选A。
根据第三段中“So when we look at the context of a mother saying you look great when she clearly sees that her daughter has gained weight, it can be acceptable. It reflects the intention of the white lie which is kindness, protection and unconditional love.(所以当我们看到母亲明明看到女儿长胖了却还说她看起来很棒的背景时,这是可以接受的。它反映了善意谎言的意图是善良、保护和无条件的爱)”可知,Dr. Breur认可出于善意、保护的目的的善意谎言,C选项中父亲说儿子取得很大进步,是出于鼓励和保护孩子的自尊心,符合这一点。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Therefore, it’s important to ask ourselves when it is and isn’t suitable to deliver the honest truth, and when it’s best to step back and offer a more delicate response. More often than not, it’s about finding a balance between the two.(因此,重要的是要问问自己,什么时候适合说出真话,什么时候不适合,什么时候最好退一步,给出更委婉的回应。通常情况下,这是在两者之间找到平衡)”可知,作者认为在说善意的谎言之前要三思。故选B。

A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back to life.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. She was nervous because she didn’t know how her mother would react. As she slowly opened the door, she saw her mother sitting in the living room, with red eyes as if she had been crying. Jenny couldn’t hold back her tears and said, “Mom, I’m so sorry for running away and speaking rudely to you.” It was at that moment that she realized how much her mother loved her, even though she never said it out loud. She remembered all the meals her mother had cooked and the nights when she stayed up late helping with homework.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back to life. Her mother pulled her into a hug and whispered, “I was so worried about you.” That simple action made Jenny feel warmth spreading through her body. She lifted her head and looked into her mother’s eyes, which were full of love. No matter what happened, she knew her mother would always be there for her. This experience taught her that true love doesn’t need many words, but shows itself in small actions every day.
