第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
You be the judge: should my phone-addicted friend go on a mobile detox (戒断)?
The prosecution (控方): James
My housemate and best friend spends every waking minute on TikTok. I know she works in social media, but she’s now seriously addicted to it, even after she’s clocked of. Besides, she needs to stop playing videos loudly around the house when I’m watching TV.
The defence: Marley
My job means I have to be on the ball with what’s trending online. I think James is jealous because he’s got a rather boring job in accounting. I don’t go around playing videos at full volume all the time; I think that’s only happened a handful of times. He’s exaggerating (夸张) there.
The jury (陪审团) of Guardian readers
While Marley’s use of TikTok may seem excessive to some, ultimately it is up to her how she chooses to use her time. If James can’t accept that, he should move out.
Margo, 29
Marley needs to put her phone down, live in the moment and think less about her social media presence. She is guilty of not valuing an honest friend because she thinks a better life awaits her on TikTok.
Stewart 35
As a fellow phone addict, I do have sympathy for Marley. However, it’s more than a little rude to have the sound turned on while watching TV together.
Peter, 40
The excessive use of social media is a crime and reflects poor control over social habits. Marley needs to be more considerate of others.
Steve, 6
Now you be the-judge
In our reader feedback section tell us: should Marley get off TikTok and get a life?
1. What is Marley’s reason for spending time on TikTok?
A. She finds an accounting job dull. B. She enjoys sharing popular videos.
C. She needs to stay updated on online trends. D. She prefers avoiding interaction with James.
2. Who is fully on Marley’s side?
A. Margo. B. Stewart. C. Peter. D. Steve.
3. Where does the text most probably come from?
A. A legal paper. B. A court record.
C. A lifestyle survey. D. An interactive column.
B
“Blow seven o’clock.”
The clipped voice comes from Peter Beamish, the scientist who owns the boat. 14 heads turn. Our eyes pick out a whale’s spray beneath the dark grey cliffs.
Beamish slips engines into gear (挡位) and the boat leaps towards the spray. Close by, a huge, circular dish of water starts to widen. “That’s where she dived. She’ll show in about another two minutes." Beamish again. He is studying animal communication, concentrating mostly on the whales along the Newfound-land coast, where he runs a scientific inn. Every trip out from there is a contribution to his research, paid for by tourists like us.
Minutes ticking by, I can hear the blow close up. It is like the cut-short burst of steam from a huge engine. In the vast sea, lifting, lifting, the whale blacks out the sky. Her black sides are glistening, curving out smooth and round, looking like an upturned ship.
“She’s going to dive. Wait for the tail.”
The whale eases a little to our left. Her back arches slowly, the water spilling off it in curtains. And then one of the most memorable sights on Earth: the tail unfolds from the surface in endless slow motion, the immense flat flukes (鲸的尾叶) pouring down water and light. For a moment it seems to pause; then the tail slowly slides down, melting little by little at the base. The sea rushes in, foaming, leaving the trail of bubbles behind her dissolving to nothing; and she is gone.
“That was Barbara.” Beamish gives every whale a name while it is here. “She’s a 40-foot female, somewhere between seven and 15 years old. She came here last month with the rest of the herd up from the Caribbean.”
The surfacing of a whale beside a small boat in the sea is an experience that cannot be overshadowed by any television documentaries. It is not only the creature’s size, nor even its power and grace. It is the sense it conveys of all time continuing; of living by some other clock, less hurried and more certain than our own.
4. What role did Peter Beamish play on the trip?
A. A coach. B. A sightseer. C. A funder. D. A guide.
5. How does the author perceive the whale’s blow and dive?
A. Striking. B. Dangerous. C. Terrifying. D. Instructive.
6. What can we learn about the writer from the last paragraph?
A. He senses the overwhelming power of time.
B. He is scared by the whale’s size and power.
C. He feels a more natural and slower pace of life.
D. He finds whales on TV documentaries more thrilling.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. The mystery of the whale. B. The magic of whale watching.
C. Sailing around with a scientist. D. Going on a scientific trip.
C
Mom always said, “Choose your friends wisely.” Now a study led by a Rutgers-Health professor shows she was onto something: Their traits can affect you — especially ones that are in their genes.
The genetic make-up of adolescent peers may have long-term consequences for individual risk of drug and alcohol use disorders, depression and anxiety, the groundbreaking study has found. “What our data illustrates is the long reach of social genetic effects,” said Jessica E. Salvatore, an associate professor of psychiatry at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and lead author of the study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
Socio-genomics — the influence of one person’s genotype on the observable traits of another — is an emerging field of genomics. Previous research suggested that peers’ genetic make-up might influence health outcomes of their friends. To test this, Salvatore and her colleagues used Swedish national data to assess peer social genetic effects for several mental disorders.
With an anonymous (匿名的) database of more than 1.5 million individuals born in Sweden between 1980 and 1998 to Swedish-born parents, the first step was to map individuals by location and by school during their teenage years. The researchers then used medical, pharmacy and legal registries documenting substance use and mental health disorders for the same individuals in adulthood.
Having controlled factors such as the target individuals’ own genetic tendencies and family socio-economic factors, the researchers still found a clear association between peers’ genetic tendencies and target individuals’ likelihood of developing a substance use or mental disorder. The impacts were stronger among school-based peers than geographically defined peers.
Salvatore said more research is needed to understand why these connections exist. But what is clear, she said, is what the findings mean for interventions. “If we want to think about how to best address these socially costly disorders, we need to think more about network-based and social interventions,” she said. “It’s not enough to think about individual risk.”
This research also underlines the importance of disrupting (中断) processes and risks that extend for at least a decade after attendance in school, Salvatore added. “Peer genetic influences have a very long reach,” she said.
8. Why did Salvatore and her colleagues conduct the research?
A. To check former research on socio-genomics.
B. To test the effectiveness of socio-genomics.
C. To figure out adolescents’ current health condition.
D. To explore the field of adolescents’ mental disorders.
9. What method did Salvatore and her colleagues apply in the research?
A. Analyzing statistics from a database. B. Referring to previous studies.
C. Conducting surveys among teenagers. D. Using a mapping tool to track individuals.
10. The significance of the research lies in that ________.
A. It stressed the urgency of conducting more relevant research
B. it reveals the social cost of mental disorders
C. it highlighted the necessity of more effective interventions
D. it envisioned the possibility of disrupting risks in a decade
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Genetic influences: The Hidden Foundation of Friendship.
B. Peers’ genetic make-up: The most influential factor.
C. Wise Friends: Determinants of Your Personality.
D. Your School Friends: Their Genes Matter to You.
D
You see a fantastic offer, like a hotel room. You decide to book. Then it turns out there is a service fee. Then a cleaning fee. Then a few other extra costs. By the time you pay the final price, it is no longer the fantastic offer you thought.
Welcome to the world of drip pricing — the practice of promoting something at an attractive headline price and then, once you’ve committed to the purchase process, hitting you with unavoidable add-ons that are “dripped”.
In most cases, you see through all additionally added mandatory fees, and even though you could relinquish the deal, you choose to bite the bullet and complete the deal. Resistance to the idea of starting the search all over again is not simply a matter of laziness or indecision. There’s a profound psychological mechanism at play here, called the present bias.
In the paper, Doing It Now or Later, economist Matthew Rabin defines people’s present-biased preference via an example of choosing between doing seven hours of unpleasant activity on April 1 or eight hours two weeks later: If asked on February 1, most people will choose the earlier option. But come April 1, given the same choice, most of us tend to put off work till April 15. In simple terms, the inconvenience of doing something “right now” often feels disproportionately large. Beyond the challenge of starting over, there’s another psychological phenomenon that drip pricing uses - loss aversion. Imagine you’re booking tickets for a show. Initially attracted by the headline price, you’re now presented with different seating categories. Seeing a VIP ticket is within your budget, you decide to fork out. But then, during the checkout process, the drip begins. You realize you could have chosen lower-category seats, but by this stage, you’ve already imagined yourself enjoying the show from those nice seats. Going back to a cheaper seat will feel like a loss.
Buyers would benefit from a ban on drip pricing. Many countries are taking steps to protect consumers from drip pricing. The effectiveness of such measures, however, is uncertain. Nonetheless, you can hopefully make a more informed decision by understanding why the strategy works.
12. Which of the following is an example of drip pricing?
A FlightHub introduces a bonus after you choose their flight.
B. Airbnb offers you a membership account when you book a trip.
C. Rent-A-Car charges wear and tear fees beyond the advertised price.
D. Ticketmaster provides optional items at later stages of your purchase.
13. What does the underlined word “relinquish” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Reach. B. Abandon. C. Sign. D. Expand.
14. How will Rabin explain people’s refusal to cancel an order and remake one?
A. People are likely to blindly stick to their initial intentions.
B. People like to grab earlier rewards and delay immediate costs.
C. People struggle to make a decision among multiple choices.
D. People tend to tolerate additional costs within their budget.
15. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To explain why people fall into the drip pricing trick.
B. To educate customers on how to deal with drip pricing.
C. To call on governments to protect consumers’ interests.
D. To introduce two psychological phenomena about spending.

In the spring sun, my aunt and I headed for her flower shop. Normally I would be delighted to help in her shop, but not recently because of Rosa. Rosa was my sister, just one month old, who was settled in my old bedroom. For ten years, the small room was full of my toys and books. But now it was transformed into her baby room, decorated like a garden with pinks and yellows. My space, my old life, was gone.
“Here we are!” We arrived at the shop, a wave of colour and sweet smell washing over me. My aunt said I could pick some flowers for Mum and Dad. I used to love this, but today I was so overcome with tiredness and envy. Why bother to bring them flowers when they were enjoying Rosa at home without me?
Silently I helped my aunt arrange flowers. “Your mum told me there hasn’t been much shut eye recently for any of you.” “Not much, since Rosa the alarm clock was installed (安装).” I complained with a huge yawn (哈欠).
“I remember having to creep (蹑手蹑脚地走) around like a worn-out mouse when your mum was a baby. I spent the first months hating her so much.” “But you and Mum seem so close,” I said, guiltily hiding away my envy of Rosa.
“Now we are. But it took me years to grow into the role of big sister. Few flowers blossom (绽放) overnight, you know.” She pulled me in for aside hug, glancing up at the clock, and suggested I take a walk outside.
Behind her shop was a field dotted with spring flowers. Stepping into the field, I began to pick little flowers. It was like gathering my childhood memories. I remembered how I’d sit with Dad, making flower chains, crowning (授予) each other with the silliest titles: Queen of Junk Food and King of Mess. My smile grew wider. The shining yellow flowers reminded me of the color in Rosa’s baby room. Was she awake? I wondered.

【答案】Dear English Club,
I’m Li Hua from Class I, Senior 3. I am more than happy to learn about the news of photo collection, and I intend to recommend a photo taken two months ago.
The photo shows students from the dance club in colorful costumes doing tap dancing, which is considered the national essence of Ireland. As far as I am concerned, this photo not only reflects the liveliness and enthusiasm of our students, but also can make Irish students feel at home. There is no doubt that this photo will help students from both countries establish friendship quickly. I would appreciate it if the photos were included.
Attached is the photo. Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】Suddenly I saw two familiar figures walking towards me. “Look who’s here!” my dad exclaimed with a smile, holding Rosa with a baby basket. The yellow flowers in my hand seemed to glow even brighter as I gazed at the beautiful little girl. I couldn’t help recalling what my aunt told me. I knew that it would take time for me to adjust to sharing my parents’ attention and my old room, but I was determined to be the best big sister I could be. Then I carefully arranged the yellow flowers into a small bouquet and handed it to my mom with a smile. “These are for you and Dad, and also for Rosa,” I said, feeling the warmth in my chest that had been missing earlier.
Rosa was wide awake in her baby basket beside the picnic blanket. Her big blue eyes were open, taking in the world around her. As I watched my little sister, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder and amazement at how perfect she was. I gently picked her up and held her close, feeling her warmth and breathing in the sweet scent of her hair. I knew that from now on, my life would never be the same. I would no longer be the center of attention, and I would have to share my parents with this beautiful little creature. But as I looked into Rosa’s eyes, I knew that it was all worth it. She was my family, and I loved her more than anything in the world.
